It is a dream come true. The Harper School now has a beautiful facility completely dedicated to the needs of the students of the Harper School. We are extremely grateful to College Avenue Baptist Church and Dr. Ron Hinson for their enthusiasm for our partnership that allowed for the renovation of the education building which had been vacant for 30 years. With their support, two floors of the building were completely renovated with private support from donors like Parkway Bank and the Bernhardt Furniture Foundation. If you have not visited us at our new home. please mark your calendar for the grand opening celebration and ice cream social on August 25 at 5:30 PM and the Faculty and Friends recital on August 27th. In June, Lenoir was named an All America City. The delegation from Lenoir included the Smith, Woods and Garcia families from the Harper School. The Harper School, along with the Helping Hands Clinic and the Uptown Development group, competed with 16 other cities to earn the honored distinction of “All America City”. Harper School students Diamond Smith, Ariana Garcia and Zackary Woods spoke eloquently about what it means to have the Harper School in Lenoir. First hand, I witnessed the tears in the judges’ eyes when Zackary Woods said “Music is my life.” It is a moment I will never forget as I stood amongst these families and remembered that we have done this in two short years. After the awards ceremony each of the judges from around the country sought me out to tell me of the impression these students made on them. I am very proud of our accomplishments at the Harper School and hope that if you are not already a student you will come and see all that we do. Through our many partnerships and generous support from hundreds of donors, students from all backgrounds can begin the magical journey of music. This catalog provides you with descriptions of the many opportunities offered by the Harper School. Sincerely, Janet K. Bloom 2 Table of Contents LHS Foundation Mission Statement The James C. Harper School of Performing Arts was founded by the LHS Foundation to provide high quality musical and performing arts instruction that fosters the creative instincts of its students. The James C. Harper School is named for Captain James C. Harper, the nationally acclaimed band leader who established the Lenoir High School Band in 1924 and established a strong heritage of music education in Caldwell County. In the words of LHS Band alumni Joseph Robinson, principle oboist of the New York Philharmonic, “Captain Harper bet his entire life and family fortune on a premise that that a handful of mountain children in North Carolina deserve to have a conservatory education.” The Harper School of Performing arts is fulfilling that same mission today. In the fall of 2008, the Harper School of Performing Arts relocated from its initial home at St. James Episcopal Church down the street to the College Avenue Baptist Church Education Building. The six thousand square foot facility, which has been vacant for almost 30 years, will provide the Harper School with 15 dedicated studios for faculty and students, an expanded pre-school music area and space for the historic Harper Band Music Library to be housed on site. The building will provide for 4 to 5 times the current space for Harper School students, and room to grow as the school grows. Highlights from the 2007-2008 school year include: Well over 500 students enrolled in private and group lessons and outreach programs in the community. An expanded Suzuki curriculum offered in violin, viola, cello, and piano. Continuation of the Harper Youth Wind Ensemble and the expansion of the Harper Jazz Ensemble. Music Therapy offered for cancer survivors in partnership with Caldwell County Wig Bank. World Drumming Curriculum offered to students at Valmead, West Lenoir and Collettsville elementary schools. 56 adults participating in the Harper Concert Band which performs 3-4 times annually. Five Harper School Students were awarded scholarships from the Community Music Club to further their music education. Seven Harper School students with their families travel to Tampa, Florida to be part of the delegation to the All American City competition. Partnership with College Avenue Baptist Church established and renovations of their education building began. Parkway Bank becomes an official sponsor of the Harper School. 4 Something for Everyone: 2008-2009 Programs at the Harper School Early Childhood Music/Music Together: See pages 6 and 7 for more information. Music Together is based on developmentally appropriate and research based practices that will enhance your child's musical development and bring much joy to your family. The Music Together program will expand your family's musical repertoire. During each semester that you participate in Music Together you will receive one CD and a wonderfully illustrated songbook. These song materials are all chosen and/or arranged to be developmentally appropriate to match the research that informs us about the musical development of young children. When you register for a semester of Music Together you will also receive a copy of Music and Your Child: A Guide for Parents and Caregivers. This booklet will inform each new family of the goals, philosophy and reasons underpinning Music Together. The Music Together Class: Music Together classes are small communities of families who share the fun and joy of making music together. These 45 minute classes are carefully planned by certified Music Together teachers. Classes are play-based and fun-filled “musicing” or music making experiences, which promote musical development in children in the ways they learn bestin an exploratory manner and by their parents or care-givers modeling. Music Together classes are focused on nurturing the basic music competence of each child. The Music Together program is grounded in the notion that all people have a musical aptitude that can be developed when nurtured. Parents and Caregiver Education: Parental participation in Music Together is one of the philosophical grounding of the program. The registered Music Together teacher helps provide the exciting musical play. Parents become their child's primary music mentor by encouraging their child's musical exploration and by creating music with their child. 7 Community Partnerships and Smart Music World Music Drumming: The World Music Drumming curriculum is the creation of Dr. Will Schmid, professor of music at the University of Wisconsin. This curriculum is an active, hands-on approach to teaching students about ethnic traditions from around the world. In addition to drumming, students improvise, listen and learn while developing a strong sense of rhythm. The full day class is cooperative learning and team building. The World Music Drumming curriculum is available to groups and schools for day-long activities. All ages benefit from this action packed experience and all instruments are provided. Cost is approximately $500.00/ day and includes the facilitator and all drums. Kings Creek Guitar Program This year the Harper School and Kings Creek School will partner on a new project which will offer group guitar lessons to all 4th and 5th grade students. This project which is funded by the Kings Creek alumni organization provides instruments and free group instruction once a week as well as periodic performances. This is the first program if its kind in Western North Carolina. Other schools interested in similar partnerships should contact Janet Bloom, Executive Director of the Harper School. Smart Music Come and learn about Smart Music and how it can enhance your practice and make you a better player! Rhonda Lorence will be leading two free sessions on setup and success with this fun program. The Harper School owns a school license and will offer a discounted permit to all enrolled students for $25. Contact Janet Bloom or Renee Rhodes for more information. Smart Music Demo Smart Music Demo Tuesday, August 26th 7 pm Wednesday, August 27th 7 pm 8 1113 College Avenue Suite B 1113 College Avenue Suite B Suzuki Program The James C. Harper School of Performing Arts offers an expanded Suzuki Program as a part of the full repertoire of classes. Lessons in violin, viola, guitar, cello, and piano are available. Shinichi Suzuki, master violin teacher and founder of the Japanese Talent Education Movement, revolutionized violin teaching. Outstanding results have been achieved in viola, cello, flute, string bass, harp, recorder, guitar, and piano instruction. The Suzuki Method works on the principle that every child can develop his or her abilities during the early and sensitive years far beyond what most people imagine. A child can learn music through the same process he or she learns their mother tongue. Thus, the parent's role is vital in the development of early learning ability. The parent attends lessons with the child and helps with practice at home. The parent's knowledge of the instrument and music is developed along with the child's. The basic principles of the Suzuki Method consist of: Listening Repetition Motivation Reinforcement Proper Technique The primary goal is to train the child not only in his or her musical abilities but also in his or her total human development. Lessons are designed to enhance the student's enjoyment of performing and learning. Also included in the Suzuki Program are group and solo recitals as well as community performances. Suzuki students will have a variety of group performances opportunities during the year. Students are encouraged to attend institutes at the local, regional and national levels. Membership in the Suzuki Association of the Americas is highly recommended. Each child receives a weekly private lesson and a bi-weekly group lesson. Group lessons are 45 minutes in length and may include chamber music, technical reinforcement, music theory, leadership skills and development of artistry. All students 7 and under in beginning guitar, cello, piano, violin and viola are expected to participate in the Suzuki program. Children are eligible for this program at the age of three and must have attended a minimum of one Music Together session before enrolling. 9 Harper Ensembles and Group Instruction Harper Brass Quintet By audition only, this ensemble will perform music of many different styles either written or arranged for brass quintet. The American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) defines music therapy as "the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program" (AMTA, www.musictherapy.org). The key difference between music therapy and other therapies is the use of music and its components as the means to address non-musical goals. Goals can include motor skills and physical functioning, self-care skills, cognitive and intellectual abilities, speech and communication, socialization, mood, and spirituality. Who can benefit from music therapy? Music therapy can be beneficial for many people including: People who have mental health needs Children or adults with developmental disabilities Older adults who are diagnosed with dementias People with substance abuse problems People who have experienced brain injuries including stroke People with physical disabilities People at the end of life People with chronic illnesses People desiring support in their general wellness, e.g. team development or rehabilitation Examples of music therapy services include: helping a child with cerebral palsy develop mobility; developing a method of communication through music for a child with severe developmental delays; using music to support the process of dying and to promote reconciliation of family members prior to death; developing and enhancing socialization skills for people in assisted living or nursing facilities; or stimulating the mental abilities of a person with brain injury to improve communication or mobility. Music Therapists at the Harper School Aaron Teague is a Board Certified Music Therapist (MT-BC) with over five years of music therapy experience.
