DV8’S CORNER Welcome to the CSG weekly update volume13. The entire crew has been on the go since our last update. Last report I mentioned that MSR was fielding a team for the 1st annual TWMX “Slam Fest.” Not only had MSR put together a strong team (consisting of Valade, Castloo and Breslin), there was a lot of hype of MSR possibly winning the event. Well, as you probably know by now, the guys gave the rest of the industry teams a run for their money. However, at the end of the day, MSR had to settle for fourth overall. This fourth did not come without drama! You see, one of the rules was that all teams had to consist of full-time employees of that brand. So there was a little bit of a “confusion” on whether or not the teams that went 1, 2 and 3 consisted of “fulltime employees.” I am going to use this as a lead into the latest news for CSG. We have recently hired a new Amateur Athlete Manager. His name is Andy Bakken. Andy’s outstanding race results just happened to help the Deft team win the TWMX slam fest! Andy may (or may not have) been hired onto to CSG moments prior to the final race... you starting to see the picture here? All joking aside, we are very excited to have Andy on board here at CSG and he is already part of the crew here making us that much stronger of a team. It was time for the annual “Not Just Any Sunday” ride with Malcolm Smith that we put on. The CSG marketing staff was on hand along with some of TR’s best vendors to treat our top dealers to 3 days of great trail riding, food and fun in Mexico. The trip was a blast as TR’s dealers, reps and vendors all got to ride with Malcolm and really enjoy all that Mexico has to offer. Big thanks to TR’s Joaquin Aranda, who kept things organized and to TR’s Carlos Aguilar. Carlos entertained Joaquin and myself for countless hours, as we drove Malcolm’s Baja truck, for 7 hours through Mexico’s finest trails to set up lunch and gas stops for all the riders. McRide overseas the bike loading as the crew prepares to leave for Baja We were also fortunate enough to have Racer X’s senior photographer Simon Cudby on hand for the event. Make sure to check out Simon’s video that he posted on Racer X, which can be found in Champs Chatter. Myself and Malcolm enjoy a great Baja evening Halloween marks the beginning of the Holiday sales season. Hopefully all of TR’s customers will be as excited as Skyler when they purchase CSG products from TR’s dealer network! CSG BI-WEEKLY UPDATE 11.03.10 Cudby & Eagleton Mustaches + Tecate = Baja! Here’s some great news for TR retailers: 0.4% = growth in August US retail sales, marking the highest uptick in 5 months, largely due to strong apparel & sporting good sales. (Source: US commerce dept.) So looks like we should all keep pushing hard as Holiday sales should increase this year. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel... can you? Well that’s it for me. I have to get back on the phone as we are in full swing of the “silly season.” I am sure you have heard plenty of rumors on who’s riding for what brand, etc, well sit tight as we finish up our rosters for the CSG riders & teams! Time to turn it over to the crew for all the details on the past 2 weeks events. – DV8 Dave PG 02 DIDDY’S DIARY BY: ROGER LARSEN PRO ATHLETE MANAGER Well here we are well into the “off season” and there are still plenty of things going on. The first half of Windham’s World Tour ended last weekend in Australia. K-Dub showed up for round two of the Super X series and swept the three moto format. I got a call during the week from the Honda Australian team manager telling me how stoked the Factory Cougar Honda team was on Kevin and how well received he was by the Australian fans. It’s nice to know Kevin’s fan base is not just limited to here in the states but it is also recognized worldwide. He is now back home getting ready for Genoa, Italy. JAMES STEWART NEWS On James Stewart news, it’s a big week for him and his team as Larry Brooks, John O and the rest of the L&M crew head to the JS7 compound in Haines City, FL for a week of testing. Then it’s right back out to California the following week where he will be back and forth from the CSG office and the Yamaha test track finalizing some last minute details on his gear for A1 and the rest of the JS Collection. Speaking of his gear, I get requests all the time from different magazine and other media outlets wanting quotes or questions answered from Stewart. The other day, I got an e-mail from Ben Foster over at Morrison Media wanting to get his take on Red Bull JS7 Dot Com gear and Answer as a company. Here is what he had to say. OX IS 8X Jeff “OX” Kargola has a new number and new sponsor for this year’s Baja 1000, which is set to get started later this month. Ox is one of the most well-rounded, versatile riders around and gets your brands a ton of mainstream press with sponsors like General Tires and now Monster Energy. He will be in Las Vegas all this week at this year SEMA auto show, doing demos and autograph signing for Metal Mulisha and General Tires. Foster: What do you like visually about the Dot Com gear? JS7: I like the color combination and up until this point it has been the first time any gear company has done a Red Bull set of gear. So that in itself is a very powerful statement to the Answer brand, that Red Bull would let us be the first in that category and anyone else that follows is just following what leadership looks like. And leadership is another word for Answer Racing. It’s special for all of us. Foster: What are your favorite things about wearing Answer gear? JS7: Probably the fit, the gear fits really well and last a long time. Also, I like how the company is a bit smaller and not all political. We strive on making the best looking most durable gear in all price ranges. Foster: How much influence do you have in the end design of the gear? JS7: I have a huge influence in the gear we design. I make sure the product we put out is the product I vouch for and stand behind. Oh and BTW, I vouch for our whole Tucker Rocky family. See ya’ll next time – Diddy CSG BI-WEEKLY UPDATE 11.03.10 Kargola’s Metal Mulisha jersey with his new digit PG 03 BACON BITS BY: ANDY BAKKEN AMATEUR ATHLETE MANAGER What’s up everyone! Guess I should start off by introducing myself. My name is Andy Bakken, but most people know me as “Bacon.” Although some don’t know me at all, I’ve been around the motocross industry practically my whole life. My Pops, A.C. Bakken, was a famous desert racer for Factory Husqvarna back in the 70’s who has won the Baja 500, Baja 1000 and earned a gold and silver medal in Europe for the ISDE. I consider him a “bad dude” and an all time hero to myself. He got me into riding but never pushed it on me at all. So it was at the age of 15 when I started taking racing serious. I became one of Yamaha’s amateur riders and rode under the Thousand Oaks tent my whole amateur career. I then progressed into the pro ranks where I earned a guest spot on the Motoworld Yamaha team for SX and MX. I raced Supercross and a select few Nationals for three years but struggled with injuries, ultimately having to end my racing career a little earlier than expected. But now, I’m back in the racing industry and couldn’t be any more pumped to have this great opportunity to come on board here at Answer, MSR and Pro Taper. I’m definitely going to have my hands full with all three brands, but I’m really looking forward to what this year brings as well as the years to come. My dad and I at Washougal back in 2007 THE AM SQUAD I’m really excited about getting the new year started. I’m fortunate enough to be able to go to all the big amateur nationals where I’m sure it’s going to bring back a lot of great memories for me. I feel like we are going to have a solid amateur team with a lot of good results. Right now is crunch time with it being resume season and all, and it looks like a lot of the same kids are going to stay with us, along with a few new additions. I’ve already been meeting some of Tyler Bereman our riders who have been stopping by the office and they all seem like great kids. Mini O’s is coming up really quick and it looks like Roger and I will be heading down there to make sure all of our riders are good to go and to support the event. In case anybody doesn’t know, it’s a week long event that takes place in Gainesville Florida over Thanksgiving weekend. They do a big turkey dinner the night of Thanksgiving for all the participants and their families, so it makes for a great family atmosphere all week long with different activities every night. If you get a chance to head down to Mini O’s, Joey Savatgy be on the look out for some of our riders. We should have a strong line up with Kyle Peters and Chris Plouffe with Answer and Joey Savatgy with MSR (just to name a few) with a group of others that I look forward to meeting while we are down there. See you guys next time! – Bacon Bits Chris Plouffe CSG BI-WEEKLY UPDATE 11.03.10 Kyle Peters PG 04 CHAMP’S CHATTER Champs chatter is back for another exciting update from the MSR world headquarters in Corona, CA. Before we get to in depth into the brand, I have to share this photo of my little guy dressed up for Halloween. He loves Lions! SOUTH OF THE BOARDER We had our Annual MSR “Not any Sunday ride with Malcolm Smith” last week, which was a total blast. Malcolm and his crew laid out a great trail for our TR dealers to come and torture themselves on. It was a Jaxon “Lion” Valade very fun event as the other supporters of the ride came down and set up displays of their new products. I have attached a few photos and also a video that Racer X’s own Simon Cudby filmed. BY:MSR RANDY VALADE MARKETING MANAGER FULL STEAM AHEAD All right, back to MSR! The design staff is hard at work coming up with new 2012 gear designs which are pretty close to being wrapped up, our new amateur athlete manager Andy Bakken is full steam ahead in signing the up and coming stars, and I’m working on the everyday duties that keep this brand rolling along. Roger and I have also been working on getting some new pro riders on the team and we should have some news on that very soon. As you can see everyone here at MSR plays a very important role in the brand and we will continue to do so to make this brand a leader in the Apparel Industry! NEW AMATEUR ATHLETE MANAGER TEAM USA IN MEXICO Like I mentioned above, Andy Bakken is our new Amateur Athlete Manager. If you ever have any questions regarding rider or sponsorship requests, please contact him and he will get you squared away. October 31st was the deadline for 2011 sponsorship requests. It will take us a little while to get back to everyone, so please be patient. MSR’s own Timmy Weigand is down in Mexico right now competing in the ISDE 6 day for team USA. After day 2, Team USA sits in 4th place in the world Trophy class. I will have all the updates for you in the next CSG Update. K-DUB DOWN UNDER Work in paradise down south Matt “Six Nine” Eagleton tells the story In racing news, Kevin Windham dominated round 2 of the Australian SX Series by sweeping all 3 finals. Last weekend Kevin put his MSR gear back on the podium with a 3rd and from what I hear a pretty funky race/ push bike elimination race format. Kevin will also be racing in 2 weeks at the Genoa Supercross to get more prepared for the opener at Anaheim in just over 2 months. Stay tuned for more info on that. TECATE BAJA 1000 In other off-road news, the Tecate Baja 1000 is right around the corner. MSR has a handful of riders competing this year, as returning champion Timmy Weigand will be back to defend his title. Metal Mulisha/MSR’s Baja 250 champion Jeff “OX” Kargola will also be looking to bring home the prestigious 1000 championship. I will have all the upOX won’t be doing this in the 1000 dates in the next edition of CSG report. CSG BI-WEEKLY UPDATE 11.03.10 K-Dub on top of the box PG 05 CHAMP’S CHATTER - CONTINUED RACER X VIDEO DEEGAN VS. DEEGAN Racer X was kind enough to cruise by our office a couple weeks ago and film a little video of the new 2011 MSR gear. There is also a bit about casual and just to let you know, all 2011 casual is in stock and ready to ship. Matt Francis has posted this on Racerxonline.com but if you have not seen it, here you go! Check out Deegan race against himself NEW MSR AD We are in the process of a new ad campaign that will be a little different from months past. We will be displaying two lines of gear in each ad and it is in a different format. As most of you know, as you flip through a magazine, you typically only stop when something catches your eye. So, check out this new ad and let me know your thoughts, as it will be featured in the upcoming Racer X and Transworld. Latest ad that you will see spread across two pages of the newest Racer X and TWMX That’s it for this weeks update on the MSR happenings. I hope this is helpful to everyone and I will be back soon! – The Champ CSG BI-WEEKLY UPDATE 11.03.10 PG 06 SIX NINE SUMMARY Being the first week of November is always a tough one, as I’m trying to come down off the sugar high I seem to suffer from every year from eating too much candy on Halloween. That’s what I’m claiming anyway, as it could just as easily be from the beverage consumption – so if you’re like me, grab some Tums, Pepto or Alka Seltzer as we forge ahead into the escapade that is MSR Off-Road. BY:MSRMATT EAGLETON MARKETING COORDINATOR WHIBLEY WINS MOOSE RUN, CLINCHES 3RD CHAMPIONSHIP BORICH TOPS ALL-MSR PODIUM AT IRONMAN GNCC MSR finishes 1-2-3 In an uncharacteristic maneuver, MSR’s Chris Borich grabbed the holeshot and then proceeded to lead every lap at this year’s final event. With the championship already in hand, Chris decided to just go out, drop the hammer and see what he could do and I think his quote sums it up pretty well. “It was just an awesome day out there and I was having a ball all by myself.” MSR’s second place finisher, Adam McGill, got a decent jump off the line but got jammed by another rider before entering the woods, where he caught a berm and rolled. Getting going and knowing the leaders were already gone, Adam knew he would have to put in the race of his life. Sitting in 9th place after coming through the barrels on lap one, McGill would just hammer away at the competition until making his move for 2nd place on the last lap and come across the finish line just 5 seconds ahead of 3rd place. The third place finisher in the All-MSR Podium, Chris Bithell was another rider who put in an outstanding ride and actually threw down the fastest lap of the day. Sitting in second for the majority of the race and at one point closing in on Borich, Chris’s day would take a downward turn when a mechanical gremlin snagged him on the last lap, as well as his teammate Adam McGill. A little disappointed with the finish, Bithell would be happy with his third podium in a row. Coming in to the final round of the OMA series with a comfortable 22 point lead, MSR’s Paul Whibley only needed to finish to wrap up his 3rd consecutive OMA Championship, but that’s not how the Axeman works it. With a different race scenario, as they only do 2 laps, but with each lap being 40+ miles, you don’t really start off charging. Taking the lead late on the first lap, Paul would reach the pits and fuel up with about a minute over second place. Keeping a good pace going and trying to extend his lead as the mud holes may have gotten a bit trickier for the second lap, Whibs did manage to extend his lead and came through the checkers with a two minute margin over 2nd place. MARIA’S WINNING WAYS COME TO A HALT I bet a lot of you were waiting to see when MSR’s Maria Forsberg was going to get beat. Well, it finally happened and all it took was for her to line up against the 4-Stroke A Lites riders in the afternoon race. Starting in her typical fashion by grabbing the holeshot, Maria was leading heading in to the woods when her and another rider tried to squeeze between two trees, leaving Maria on the ground. Being the true champion she is, she gets up and starts charging again, leaving a few of the guys in her wake as she ends the day in 7th place out of a field of 13. Not bad considering this class is the last stop before hitting the XC2 Pro Lites class. CSG BI-WEEKLY UPDATE 11.03.10 PG 07 SIX NINE SUMMARY - CONTINUED WHIBLEY, DUVALL PODIUM AT IRONMAN GNCC With a taste of victory at the last GNCC and wrapping up the OMA Championship a week earlier, MSR’s Paul Whibley knew he had what it takes going in to the final GNCC. Barely missing out on grabbing the holey, Paul would settle for second place heading in to the woods. With an extreme drought in the area, it was going to be a dusty mess and getting up front would prove to be crucial. Taking the lead position late on the opening lap, it would be a move he would never relinquish and would hold the top spot all the way to the finish. With this years’ running of the Ironman going pink in support of October being Breast Cancer Awareness month, I decided to hit up Thad Duvall and see if he would be willing to run some of the women’s pink gear. He was stoked, to say the least and in a way I think it even lit a fire Whibs roosting to the front under him to want a podium position even more. Thad put in one of his more solid rides of the season and if not for a slight mishap on a gnarly hill late in the race (where he lost at least a minute), he would have been right there pressuring for the win. Also, here is a great link to the race action from the Ironman GNCC, as it shows just how brutal this track got with all the dust and water crossings. Thad running pink gear ISDE 2010 At this years’ running of the famed ISDE, we have quite a handful of riders out there supporting the MSR brand. At the time I’m writing this, the USA Trophy Team is in 4th place, as is the Junior Trophy Team. Here is a small photo collection of racers supporting the MSR Brand. From ride days to the Annual Baja ride, October has pasted way too quickly. The past month has been a pretty interesting and a busy one to boot, so enough of the small talk and lets dive into the world of Answer Racing. 2010 ANNUAL MALCOLM SMITH BAJA RIDE RED BULL LAUNCHES ALL NEW POP DISPLAY BASED ON JAMES STEWART Last month, Red Bull launched a new POP system that will be featuring James Stewart in and around store all across the US. The program is set to roll out 150,000 pieces of displays, refrigerator stickers, end caps and posters that will be placed around the stores. This is just one of the many different avenues that James continues to open for our brand. So when you are at your favorite store or gas station, be sure to keep your eyes posted for these new POP Displays. Myself, Randy, Matt & Charles down in Mexico Last weekend marked the annual Malcolm Smith Baja Ride and my first trip south of the border to get some riding in. This year’s event drew over 65 people that were welcome with some of the best riding that I have seen in quite some time. 2011 ANSWER RACING HOODED FLEECES Segmented - $69.95/$71.95 Tremor - $74.95 F-10 - $69.95/$71.95 Gradient - $74.95/$78.95 CSG BI-WEEKLY UPDATE 11.03.10 Winter is right around the corner and we have you covered with a variety of true customized hooded fleeces and jackets for all occasions. Since the off season tends to be pretty slow on the media side of things for the brands, we thought it would be a good idea for them to stop by and shoot some updated videos of our entire product line for 2011. Our Facebook page continues to grow, and to reward all of our loyal friends and fans, we have an awesome give away for you guys. What we are going to do for this contest is, once we hit 10,000 fans, the first person to email me at [email protected], after we post an update titled “10,000”, will receive an autographed Ernesto Fonseca F-10 jersey. This is just one of the many contest and promotions that we will have going on using our social media sites. We are already in to November and right about 2 months from another stacked Supercross series opener. Things are shaping up to be a great season and Pro Taper is looking good coming in with the 450 class #1 plates. We are also still finalizing deals with other SX teams (Rockstar Makita Suzuki is already locked in for 2011), as well as off-road teams, elite FMX riders and some top amateurs as well. Our FMX crew continues to push the sport to new heights. The 2010 TWMX SLAM Festival went off a couple weekends ago and all 3 CSG brands were well represented. His 2011 look will be changing, but his bars should remain the same After one season on the Rockstar Makita Suzuki team, Austin Stroupe has signed on with the up and coming Valli Motorsports Yamaha organization – another PT supported outfit. If healthy, and not on the ground, Stroupe could be a big surprise come A1. Remember that he turned some heads when substituting on the factory RM-Z450 during the West Coast Supercross rounds last season. TWMX SLAM FESTIVAL Take CONTROL... hint hint CSG BI-WEEKLY UPDATE 11.03.10 All controversy aside, the MSR crew put up a heck of an effort at the first annual Transworld Industry Cup race. Clint Breslin, Randy Valade and I had a great time bringing back some of the old racing jitters, even if we were straight off the couch (or behind the desk) unlike some of the other riders... cough, cough, Andy Bakken... just sayin’. We also stuck around for Saturday’s festival to show off some product and mingle with consumers and industry people. The tents stayed pretty busy and overall there was a good feel. Jacko is one of the Mulisha Troops from Australia running MSR gear and PT MM hard parts – full on Tucker Rocky supporter! Pro Taper FMX riders Jeremy “Twitch” Stenberg, Myles Richmond and Ronnie Faisst threw down some insane whips in Las Vegas a couple weeks ago for the Dew Tour crowd. The event was right in town and definitely grabbed some attention. PT continues to dominate FMX and pretty much owns the majority of the entries at events across the world.
