GLANMIRE COMMUNITY COLLEGE
A year of Achievement for GCC
R E V I E W

Principal’s Note for School Review 2011
As human beings we are all given unique and wonderful gifts and
talents. It is our solemn duty to make full use of these gifts and
talents so that we live our lives as fully as possible. To do this we
must commit fully to identifying our own gifts and talents and then,
to making the very most of them. The young people featured in this
Review magazine have accepted this challenge and have responded
in a positive and a creative way. They have given expression to what
is best in themselves. In this way they have become role models for
us all. I want to congratulate them and I also want to encourage
them to build on this success in the future. I also want to thank their
parents and teachers, who have nurtured and guided them. This
Review is a celebration of their achievements.
It is fitting that this review be dedicated to the memory of our late
colleague Mairéad Ní Mhaidín who passed away during the last
school year. Mairéad never tired of encouraging students and
delighted in celebrating their achievements. For many years she was
the driving force behind this review.
Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam dilís.
I want to thank Mr Dave Murphy, Mr
Dominic Foster, Mr Mike Carey and
Ms Sinead Joyce who produced the
2010-11 Review magazine.
Is mise le meas.

Ms. Manning with the help of her excellent class teachers and subject teachers in first year said that
the talents of each individual student would be nurtured and that each student would reach their
potential in the course of their journey through this College.
Planting the tree is symbolic of the students’ journey with us in GCC.
2nd year
Orienteering trip
to Watergrasshill
As part of their physical education programme, an orienteering event was
organised for all second year students in early November. Held in the beautiful
Mounbaun Woodland area near Watergrasshill, the second years competed in
the event to discover who could complete the course in the fastest time
possible. An enjoyable day was had by all. Many thanks to the PE teachers,
especially Mr O’Sullivan, Mr Carey, Mrs Sheehan and Mr Shortall for providing
help in setting up the course. A special mention to 5th Year students James
Jeffreys, Ciaran O’Flynn, Megan O’Leary and Orla O’Sullivan who prepared
and administered the event.

Díograis Awards Ceremony 2011
Ms. S. Joyce
The Díograis awards ceremony is one of the most
vibrant and important nights in the G.C.C.
calendar. It showcases all that the students, staff
and parents involved in the school community
have to be proud of. It is a vital celebration of
pupils’ efforts and achievements in a vast range of
academic, sporting, artistic and cultural
endeavours.

Between awards the audience also enjoyed
musical entertainment from the Junior choir with
a version of ‘Button up your Overcoat’. The Senior
choir sang ‘The Girl from Ipnamea’ and second
year student Roxanne Tomlov’s gave a dance
performance to accompany the song. The night
was ended with a creative display from the Body
Percussion Movement project in which Transition
Year students were involved.

There are particular thanks due to the Díograis

night such a success. Special thanks also for the
musical direction of Ms. Ann Mannix and artistic
guidance of Ms. Adah Lynch, enhancing the
experience of the ceremony. Thanks are due also
to the many students, teachers and staff who
spent time in helping to help make the night the
symbol of school pride that it is.

The theme of this Díograis awards ceremony was
Discovery. The audience was treated to a stunning
visual, musical, dance interpretation of ‘Alice in
Wonderland’ with the help of six dancers and the
school choir.
The ceremony was presented by Ms. Hazel Reeves
and Mr. James Harrington. Ms. Jacqui Hurley, RTE
sports journalist and presenter was our special
guest and the theme of her speech was the
importance of making the most of one’s talents.
Ms. Hurley told the audience about the ‘eureka’
moment that inspired her to pursue her goals and
she encouraged pupils to embrace their talents
and seek to improve themselves.
Mr. Pat McKelvey expressed his pride in all G.C.C
students: the winners, the nominees and the
students who endeavour to become future
Díograis nominees. Mr. McKelvey highlighted that
while students have many important pursuits,
one’s most important undertaking is the lifetime
journey for inner discovery. He awarded the
Principal’s Award to sixth year pupil Emma Hayes.

Participation and Fun highlight Athletics Sports Day 2011
Great Fun and Excitement was evident on Glanmire Community Colleges Sports on the evenings of Thursday May 12th and
Friday May 13th. A huge range of events were available which marked the centrepiece of athletics, an important part of GCC’s PE
Curriculum.
Following our infamous class teacher obstacle course, the day kicked off with the class 4x100m relays when a class from each
first year class competed for top prizes. With boys, girls and mixed races, participation was the key here, with speed very high and
the number of baton-drops low.
Both beginner and experienced athletes showed their endurance and staying power in the long distance events. The levels of
commitment and standard of running over the girls (800m) and Boys (1200m) was excellent and these long distance athletes
really showed their worth.
For the speed merchants, the 100m events were hotly contested affairs, with close finishes in each of the heats, and finals of top
class competitors.
In the novelty events such as the sack race, hurley solo race and three-legged race, students and teacher alike showed their
determination and competitive edge.
The level of inclusion of all students and high levels of student participation are always a hallmark of GCC Physical Education and
the annual athletic events in particular. Many thanks to the PE Department for their excellent co-ordination of the event and all of
the teachers who took part in the administration and score-keeping of the event.
Congratulations to all the students who enjoyed partaking in the different events and to all who won medals.

GAA Stars celebrate in style
A celebration night to mark the efforts and successes of victorious GCC gaelic games
teams and the various GAA initiatives within the school was held in the Vienna
Woods Hotel on Wednesday 18th May. Cork All-Ireland winning medallist Michael
Shields kindly gave his time to speak and present medals to all team members. The
2010/2011 school year has, yet again, been particularly successful for Glanmire
Community College, with the junior ladies football team clinching county honours
in February. In addition, the U14 team footballers claimed county honours with an
emphatic win in their final against Mitchelstown CBS in early April. In addition to
extended runs in senior hurling, U14 hurling and senior camogie this has been a
busy and progressive year for gaelic games within the school.
Ladies football mentors Mr Shortall and Mr McKelvey, as well as U14 football
coaches Mr O’Sullivan and Mr Murphy spoke about the fantastic commitment of
their players throughout the year and the support given by parents and local clubs.
Michael Shields applauded the time given by the teachers who train all the teams
and he told students of the importance of including an active lifestyle along with
study during school. A memorable night was had by all.
GCC Hurling
The 2010/2011 season was an action packed one for the hurlers of GCC. With both keen beginners in first year to seasoned hurlers at
senior level, the school continues to be a centre of development for hurling talent.
At U15 level, after great performances against Colaoste an Chroaibhin Fermoy and Colaiste Chriost Rí, GCC finally lost to the eventual
Munster champions, Ard Scoil Rís from Limerick.
At U14 level, this talented group remained unbeaten in the group stages of the competition, seeing off Ard Scoil Rís, Blackwater CS and
North Monastery. However, in a closely contested county semi-final, Blackwater CS came out victorious by a narrow margin.
With a wide array of clubs feeding into the school and the commitment to training, it is not surprising to see many of our young hurlers
playing with Imokilly, Seandún and Cork over the
summer months. With the commitment of students,
and the cooperation and support of parents and
clubs, the coming year promises to be another
exciting year for GCC hurling.

JUNIOR GIRLS FOOT
Glanmire Community College Girls Football Team were crowned County
Champions on Tuesday 5/4/2011 in a rain and windswept Macroom. After
receiving a walkover from Youghal in the quarter final, GCC faced Colaiste
an Phiarsaigh in the Semi Final and defeated Colaiste easily on a beautiful
spring morning on the 23/3/2011. Glanmire CCs dominance was due to the
impressive Jennifer O’ Lehan on moving from full back to centre back and
was ably assisted by the dynamic duo in the corners of Sadhb Harrington
and Marie Connolly. Impressive displays from Sorcha and Merissa Horgan
in Midfield and wing back respectively, with both mopping up the world of
breaking ball. In the forwards Nicole O’ Brien, Ciara Cashman, Sarah Fahy
and Katie Fitzgerald were causing the defence all sorts of trouble and
showed fantastic skill in beating defenders and in their support play.
In the final against Bantry, GCC faced their biggest challenge, after getting
off to a flying start. However Bantry found their purple patch with 15
minutes of the first half remaining. Andrea Collins made some excellent
saves and was given excellent protection by Chloe Ahearn who once again
was a dominant force at the edge of the square. Wingbacks Amy Collins
and Captain Claire Connolly began to assert their dominance, with surging
runs into the Bantry half. Their excellent distribution of the ball ensured the
Bantry backs were kept on the back foot.
Ciara Young showed once again why she is one to watch for the future with
a lung busting performance in midfield as she tirelessly worked up and
down the field. The strength of this GCC team was not having to rely on
one or two players and in the final Laura Cahill and Courtney McCarthy
made their impact with Laura scoring 1:01 and Courtney contributing 1:03
from play when the game was in the melting pot and certainly helped drive
a nail into the coffin of any Bantry comeback. Nicole Cashman’s introduction
also proved a pivotal factor with her ability to carry the ball at pace at
defenders.
Lauren Casserly and Amy O’Lehan showed their versatility in the final, (both
have another two years at this age group) by giving impressive
performances. Lauren made the switch to corner back from wing forward in
the second half and was very impressive, holding her opponent scoreless.
While Amy came on to crown the win with two of the best points of the
final. Emma and Chloe Casey along with Caoimhe Maher all played very
well throughout the year with one of the highlights being Caoimhe’s goal
against Thurles in the Munster Semi-Final.
In next year six of the girls will leave the junior ranks and play senior
football for the school. After losing the Munster Junior Final this year,
hopefully the remaining girls can push on and claim that title.
A big thanks to everyone that helped throughout the course of the year
especially Ms. Maeve Owens, Ms Paula Murphy , Mr Pat McKelvey, Mr Barry
Shortall.

ICT Improvements in Glanmire
Community College
by Dave Murphy
This year has seen some major changes to our ICT Infrastructure within
the school. We have introduced a new teaching computer and secure
cabinet into every classroom. Along with the introduction of new
computers we have also fitted new Interactive projectors coupled with
speakers to turn each classroom into a fully interactive multi-media
room.
All classrooms are now able to display life like presentations, high
definition videos, documentaries , tutorial clips, sound clips and much
more. These new innovative classroom tools will aid teachers to present
information and notes to students in a whole new capacity.
We have also introduced a new large screen and projector in our main
social area for presentations and shows. Along with this we have fitted
a new digital display unit to display important information to the
students.
Our IT teaching department is also hoping to introduce a new IT
training programme called Microsoft Office Specialist. Similar to the
ECDL course this new course offers a comprehensive learning package
in the Microsoft Office programmes, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook,
Access. This new course is credited by Fetac and City & Guilds.

T.Y School Musical 2011
‘All Shook Up’
This year’s Transition Year production of “All Shook Up”
added yet another accolade to the lengthening list of
successful school shows. The students embraced the
music, dancing and accents of Elvis and 50s MidWestern America with skilful enthusiasm and dedication.
Familiar favourites such as “Don’t be Cruel”, “Burning
Love” and of course “All Shook Up” rang through
corridors and ipods usually dominated by Lady Gaga and
Rhianna. The King was once again alive in GCC!
It’s the 1950s in a small town in the Midwest, USA. This
is a place where nothing exciting ever happens. Mayor
Matilda is busy enforcing ‘Decency Laws’, forbidding the
locals from dancing, kissing and listening to loud music.
Enter Chad, a motorcycle loving, rock n’ rolling,
roustabout! Chad has only just been released from
prison in a nearby town for exciting the townspeople.
He causes uproar in this town, especially with the ladies.
All the girls fall for Chad, particularly Natalie, a
mechanic, charged with fixing Chad’s precious
motorcycle. She is willing to do anything to get her man
but she isn’t the only one in this town with a secret
crush!
Transition Year 2010/2011
Ms. S. Joyce
The Transition Year of 2010/2011 was one of the most
dynamic and successful to date. Students gain an enormous
amount from the year. The year allows pupils to develop
important skills such as teamwork, responsibility and self
expression. These are all worthy traits for those entering
senior cycle in school but also for students’ own personal
development. The TY year experienced a multitude of
projects, social outings, fundraising and workshops that
appealed to all interests.
Students got a taste of the professional world when they
researched their own work experience and secured a
placement in their workplace of choice. Two weeks of
practice in the working world will surely prove to be an
extremely worthwhile experience. Students also improved
on public speaking skills by making a work experience
presentation to their peers.
A very important part of the year was the school musical,
‘All Shook Up’ which ran for two nights and was a
popular hit. Students were involved in all areas of the
musical, the rehearsals, artwork, production, singing,
dancing and acting. The musical is a part of transition year
that involves the whole school and is a chance to show
what the students are capable of.
Among the year’s highlights was the trip to Paris.
Some pupils went on a trip with the HOPE
foundation to Calcutta. Students gave a very
moving presentation about their
experience of the reality of
city life for the children
of Calcutta.
Throughout the year,
students
documented their
experiences in their
portfolio, a graded
piece of work but also
a valuable keepsake of
a colourful and formative
year. Students showed great
initiative organising their own
end of year mass with singing
and personal compositions and a
commendable slideshow of the
year.
Huge thanks is due to the coordinators
this year, Ms. O. McCarthy and Ms. C.
Thompson and many of the other staff
who have been involved in making the
transition year such a success.

Transition Years attend Open Day at U.C.C.
TY students attended Open Day at University College Cork on
Thursday 14th of April. The Open Day provides an excellent
opportunity for students to get a feel of college life by visiting
the campus itself. Accompanied by G.C.C. Guidance
counsellors, Mr. O’Leary and Ms. Bennet, students were given a
tour of the university grounds by two current U.C.C. student
ambassadors. There was a lively atmosphere at the university,
as G.C.C. pupils were just one school group among many Cork
secondary schools in attendance. Students also visited
information stands in the Student Centre where they received
information and brochures on a variety of faculties and courses
available. The Open Day concluded with students attending a
lecture on what third level education at U.C.C. has to offer
prospective students.
