Applications are now being accepted through
Friday, November 15, 2013 for scholarships for post
high school educational opportunities. Applicants
must have at least two years' membership in the
Upper Midwest Endurance and Competitive Trail
Association. The applicants must have participated
in at least 25 rides sponsored by UMECRA and
intend to study for at least a two year program.
Former Wisconsin members Ray and Audrey Gehrig
established this scholarship in 1996. Additional tax
deductable contributions are welcome for anyone
at any time. Many UMECRA members have made
charitable contributions to support this scholarship
fund in the past. We encourage members to
continue to add memorial gifts and honorariums to
the fund to support this worthy scholarship for
youth and others returning to school. You can
donate directly on-line at the website cfsw.org

2014-2015 Rider Reps Candidates Sought
Are you interested in being a Rider Rep in
UMECRA? Rider representatives are the rider’s
voice on the UMECRA Board of Directors. You
must be a UMECRA rider member (but not a ride
manager) and be able to attend at least 2 out of the
three board meetings we have a year. This is a two
year term which begins after the January 2014
General Meeting. Board meetings are typically in
March, November and January. Nominations are due
to the UMECRA secretary by the UMECRA
November Board meeting.

Open Positions for 2014
The Board will be appointing the following positions at
the November Board meeting:
Sanctioning coordinator – responsible for
coordinating ride calendar and ride manager requests
for rides and ride date changes, making a long-term
calendar, ordering and delivering ride manager paper
supplies, puts together ridebook by March and
coordinates its mailing, and communicates to board,
web site coordinator and newsletter editor changes in
the ride schedule.
Newsletter Editor - publishing 10 times a year
newsletter, procuring a hard copy publisher of the
newsletter, sending out e-version of the newsletter as
well as, other general UMECRA and ride notice emails.

SUGGESTIONS?
If you have UMECRA rule or bylaw changes,
ideas for a new rule or rule removal
suggestions, please submit them to the Rules
& Bylaws committee before the November
UMECRA board meeting. It’s easier for the
Rules & Bylaws Committee to craft language
beforehand, check it against other rules for
conflicts before submitting it to the whole
board for a vote at that meeting.

The AHA Distance Nationals are coming to
the Midwest! October 24-27
The ride will be located in Chandlersville, IL, at
the Jim Edgar Panther Creek Fish & Wildlife
Area
(http://www.arabianhorses.org/competitions/natio
nalevents/natdist/2013/default.asp) Being held in
the Midwest, the centralized location will be
easily accessible by a large geographical cohort
of distance enthusiasts. Anticipating a large
turnout, and good times!
This is less than 3 months way (where is the
time going!?) and there will be a raffle to assist in
the funding of this premier event. We are looking
for new/unused items that would appeal to the
distance rider, the horses involved, the crew and
interested family members that support their
distance rider & horse.
The possibilities are endless. Tack, horse
clothing, rider items, horse
feed/supplements/treats, crew items (outcheck
bags, coolers with beverages/nonperishable
snack items, inclement weather gear, shade
tents), accessories for rigs (awnings/high &
spring ties, bucket holders), horse containment
(pickets, electric fence components) , buckets &
hay nets, horse/distance rider themed items,
photo sessions, certificates to future rides, gift
certificates to the legions of distance rider stores.
And mail/online order outlets....do you have a
good working relationship with a favorite? Ask if
they’ll donate an item or certificate good at their
online store! A local feed store could donate a
sack of feed, treats and/or supplements! And
gas cards!!! Your favorite fill up station, if it a
nationally recognized chain! I’m going to email
BP (and remind them of what a volume-wise
good customer I am) and request a donated fuel
card!
So I’m kicking it off with an item that my friends
on Facebook helped me win by virtue of “liking”
Distance Depot/The Horse Lover’s Outlet
Facebook page on my behalf...this nifty bridle.
As I am blessed to be the coordinator of this
raffle, I’d be delighted to collect your donations
at any ride I am at, or you can have it mailed to

Alternative Hay Sources
Hay cubes are an excellent fiber source for horses,
and are generally easily accessible at most feed
stores, and can be fed just like hay, at a 1:1 ratio. Hay
cubes are heavier in weight, so you'll need to weigh
them to ensure the horse is getting the proper amount
of forage.
Complete feeds are formulated to provide a large
proportion of a horse's nutrient needs, including fiber.
Complete feeds usually contain more than 16% crude
fiber and are designed to be fed in larger amounts
compared to a lower fiber grain mix with little to no
hay alongside. Follow label directions to ensure
horses consume adequate amounts of nutrients,
fiber, and other feed components.
Byproduct fiber sources include beet pulp, bran, and
grain hulls. Beet pulp is a popular fiber source for
horses because of its digestibility and palatability.
Studies have shown that a horse's diet can contain
up to 55% beet pulp without negative effect. It's
important to remember, that beet pulp's digestibility is
higher than most grass hays, so ensure the horse's
diet is balanced properly when making the switch.

Brans, such as rice bran and wheat bran, are another
option but are less desirable due to their high
phosphorus concentrations. If feeding bran, ensure
the horse is consuming adequate calcium to keep the
calcium:phosphorus ration to at least 1:1.
Because these fiber byproducts are only fermentable
fiber sources, they should be fed alongside hay or
another complete fiber source. Thus, these sources
should be used to stretch hay rather than replace it.
