YOU NEVER KNOW where the road will lead, and we’d never have expected that
on our way to the Ironton River Rally we’d wind up at a firehouse in West Virginia
shooting some very cool shots of some hot firefighters’ bikes!
Adventure awaits around every bend, so when we met retired fireman Dave Lake at
Charlie’s Harley-Davidson in Huntington,W.V., he took us on a nice ride to their Teays
Valley fire station to shoot some pictures for Ridin’ On.
There we met Nathan Bird who owns an awesome 2005 Road King Fire Fighters
Edition that he’s added on a lot of personal touches
to make this bike a one-of-a-kind and make
it his own. Nathan started out as a Junior
Fire Fighter in 1993, to a Fireman today.
He’s a second generation fire fighter
who loves to ride, when he’s not
heroically battling fires and saving
damsels in distress.

WOW… That’s the one word that best sums up this year’s
75th anniversary Sturgis Rally; “WOW” followed by a million
exclamation points!!!!!!!!!!!! That’s one for each biker who
went to the South Dakota mecca this year between August 3-9,
as many believe that’s the new record attendance. Although official numbers
haven’t yet been released, the “m” word has been bandied about. And I, for one,
can personally attest that Darlene and I were both at the then-BIG 50th Sturgis
Black Hills Motor Classic back in 1990, along with nearly a half million other
riders, and this year’s rally appeared to be twice as “B-I-G”!
Motorcycles were EVERYWHERE for a hundred miles in every direction, and
vendors were set up everywhere a motorcycle wasn’t.
The overwhelming hugeness of it all was magnified by the fact that neither
Darlene nor I have been back to Sturgis since the 57th in 1997, when we
rode there from L.A. with our 14-month old baby girl Rachelle in the sidecar.
Besides Rachelle now starting her Sophomore year of college in Vermont this
fall, a LOT has changed since then.
Since nearly twenty years ago, here’s the most notable changes between
Sturgis then-and-now:
W-a-a-a-a-y more baggers! And w-a-a-a-y more three-wheelers; trikes,
Spyders, Slingshots…maybe it’s a growing fad, or maybe it’s a sign of our times.
Lots more women riding solo; ask Darlene from riding in 1990 and before.
Considerably more varied types and models of motorcycles; lots of metrics.
More vendors taking up more space along Main Street, and booths lining up
and down the side streets even further than ever before. LOTS more bikes
and bikers EVERYWHERE, with nearby towns providing Bike ONLY Parking
and closing their main drag to motorcycles only; campgrounds full and fully
rockin’, bars fuller – and BIGGER, with some towering for half a block!
Here’s Sturgis, BY THE NUMBERS: Vendor Licenses Issued – 891 (up from
667 last year); Garbage Collected – 2000 tons and mounting; Traffic Citations
– 1,200; Traffic Warnings – 4500; DUI’s – 52 (way down); Accidents – 142 (a new
record); Fatalities – 13 (a new record); Cash Seizures - $28,652 (way down);
Harleys Sold at Black Hills H-D – 509 (previous best 368); Nearest Hotel Room
– 175 miles away.
So, with so many bikers there, you gotta believe the Buffalo Chip’s Lost &
Found is overflowing with a variety of common and not-so-common items left
behind when the party was over -- 193 weird and wonderful things such as:
63 sets of keys, 16 pairs of glasses (13 prescription), dozens of air mattresses,
tons of tents, 1 vial of unknown “STURGIZZ”, 1 erotic Norwegian novel, 1 pair
of galoshes, 14 cell phones, tarps galore, several kiddie pools & accessories, 3
propane grills, 4 wallets, 19 credit/debit cards, and 1 Harley-Davidson.
Darlene and I have already Saved the Date for the 100th, and wondering about
the changes to come… so stay tuned for my Sturgis 2040 report.
Our good friend and mentor Richard Lester, founder of AIM/
NCOM, was inducted into the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum
& Hall of Fame along with other notables: Sturgis Police
Chief Jim Bush, racing sponsor and Harley dealer Don Tilley
(posthumously), champion racer Everett Brashear, famed
custom bike builder Eddie Trotta, celebrity bike builder John
Shope, chopper pioneer Sugar Bear, and EagleRider rentals
founder Chris McIntyre.
**I was honored to be inducted over a decade ago with the
inaugural class in the Freedom Fighters Hall of Fame.

NATIONAL COALITION OF MOTORCYCLISTS
Compiled & Edited by BILL BISH
The new state law requires road guards to:
•Successfully complete a driving record review and a training
course to receive a motorcycle road guard certificate.
•Meet safety and equipment standards outlined in the law.
•Only act as a flagger for group rides with 20 motorcycles or more.
•Notify each statutory or home rule charter city
through which the ride is traveling.
•Receive consent from the chief of police of city of the
first class through which the ride is traveling.
LEGISLATORS DEFINE AUTOCYCLES
“STOP MOTORCYCLE
CHECKPOINT FUNDING ACT”
ADVANCES IN CONGRESS
The U.S. Senate passed a six-year Federal Highway Bill on
July 30 with a bipartisan vote of 65-34, and the measure now
moves to the House for further action, but Congress also
passed its sixth short-term funding extension in six years
to move the bill off the front burner until late October.
The Senate-passed version of the highway bill contains
the following bill text, on page 539 of S.1647, the DRIVE
act; or Developing a Reliable and Innovative Vision for the
Economy act:
PART II —
STOP MOTORCYCLE CHECKPOINT FUNDING ACT
SEC. 34121. SHORT TITLE.
This part may be cited as the ‘‘Stop Motorcycle Checkpoint Funding Act’’.
SEC. 34122. GRANT RESTRICTION.
Notwithstanding section 153 of title 23, United States Code, the Secretary may
not provide a grant or any funds to a State, county, town, township, Indian tribe,
municipality, or other local government that may be used for any program –
1. to check helmet usage; or
2. to create checkpoints that specifically target motorcycle operators or
motorcycle passengers.
WASHINGTON CONFEDERATION OF
CLUBS & ABATE PREVENT MOTORCYCLE
PROFILING PATROLS
The Washington State Traffic Safety Commission and Washington State Patrol
were planning targeted motorcycle safety patrols from July 31 thru August
16. These patrols would be in direct violation of RCW 43.101.419, the law
prohibiting motorcycle profiling.
Through the unified efforts of the Confederation of Clubs, ABATE, and the
U.S. Defenders, these planned patrols WILL NOT HAPPEN and an alert has been
issued to participating agencies to help ensure profiling does not occur.
In response to a letter outlining these grievances from COC attorney Mike
Myers, the WSTC claimed the original press release announcing the patrols was
a mistake. They apologized, reversed their position, and even issued an alert to
all participating agencies outlining the state prohibition on motorcycle profiling.
“The Washington State Motorcycle Rights movement continues to provide an
exemplary model for the fight against profiling and the advancement of our
rights base,” said Double D, Chair of the Confederation of Clubs of Washington,
and Lyle Coyle, State Coordinator of ABATE of Washington, in a joint statement.
“Simply put, the motorcycle profiling law in Washington State has the power
to reverse discriminatory policymaking conducted by state agencies and
reinforce the regime of protection legally enjoyed by motorcyclists in our state.”
MOTORCYCLE “ROAD GUARDS” TO
PATROL MINNESOTA ROADWAYS
Certified motorcyclists known as “road guards” are hitting Minnesota
roads as of August 4th, and they’ll be able to stop and control traffic for large
motorcycle group rides throughout the state.
8
Ridin’ On Motorcycle Magazine
Part car, part motorcycle, it’s an AutoCycle. Three-wheel vehicles like the Elio,
or Polaris Slingshot, Campagna T-Rex, Tanom Invader, Morgan, and Toyota’s new
i-Road all definitely drive differently than motorcycles but currently, because
these vehicles are technically motorcycles in the U.S., drivers are required to
wear a helmet in many states and are also required to obtain a motorcycle
license.
With these three-wheelers currently classified as motorcycles by the National
Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and various conflicting laws across the
country that regulate them, on March 12, 2015, U.S. Senator David Vitter (RLA) introduced the Autocycle Safety Act (S.685 / House companion H.R.2892
by Rep. John R. Moolenaar (R-MI), which creates the new classification
“autocycle” for enclosed motor vehicles with three wheels and aims to set
a single standard for all three-wheeled road vehicles, hopefully making it
easier for companies to bring autocycles to mass market.
To date, 26 states have enacted or are currently developing classifications for
enclosed, three-wheeled vehicles as autocycles at the state level, requiring
individual states to determine helmet and motorcycle endorsements for these
vehicles, so enacting federal legislation will provide consistency across the
country.
The legislation provides that autocycle manufacturers must immediately
meet certain safety standards until such time as the NHTSA can promulgate
final safety regulations covering autocycles. To be eligible for the new
classification of autocycle, the vehicle must qualify as meeting Federal
Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) -- not limited to, but including most
standards for passenger vehicles under 10,000 lbs. Some of the requirements
will be FMVSS for seat belts and seat belt anchors, child restraints, roof crush
and meet upper interior impact standards. Autocycles also must have front
and side curtain airbag protection. In addition to numerous safety standards
needed for qualification, autocycles must meet FMVSS for motorcycles as
well. The legislation also requires the continued investigation of additional
standards appropriate for autocycles, developing additional safety standards
for these vehicles. Automotive fuel standards also apply to autocyles.
U.S. STATES WITH THE WORST ROADS
U.S.Department of Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx is fed up with
Congress’ inaction to pass a long-term transportation funding measure, and
in a July 9 blog post, Secretary Foxx once again called out Congress for
their lack of action, followed by statistics of American roads and bridges by
state. Altogether, 65% of roads in the United States are in “less-than-good”
condition, according to the American Society of Civil Engineers 2013 Report
Card for America’s Infrastructure.
These are the 10 states with the worst roads: 10. Oregon, 9. New Jersey,
8. Washington, 7. California, 6. Rhode Island, 5. Colorado, 4. Oklahoma, 3.
Wisconsin, 2. Connecticut, and coming in at #1 is Illinois with 73% of their roads
in poor/mediocre condition.

Since I went to MMI after I got out of the USMC, I was super excited to go to

Yes. My whole family was huge into racing. I grew up at the race track and

I was big enough to clean parts and do anything in the shop, I was there. My
brother and I were the motorcycle people in the family.
➤ Where and how was your first experience with the program?
My experience in Daytona in 2013 with VETMotorsports was awesome! I
was teamed up with James Gang Racing. They treated me like one of the
crew and that’s when I got my first taste of being part of a pro race team. I
loved every minute of it!
➤ Did you work on cars/motorcycles at all?
I worked on everything I could get my hands on. Growing up in a rural
farm town all my friends had dirt bikes, ATVs, snowmobiles. And I was the
mechanic among my friends because of my family’s shop.
➤ How has it been to work with your new team this year?
Working with Latus Motors Racing has been a great experience,
and the team atmosphere is motivated to put Bobby Fong on
the podium. The team has been great mentoring me.
➤ What led you to join the Marines? I didn’t have a plan after high school. I had no plan to go to college. So I got
a job in a factory, but it wasn’t for me. My great grandfather and grandfather
were both Marines. So I was like, I’m going to do that!
➤ How did your full-time position come about?
Because I worked with an AMA Pro team last year, when
the opportunity arose for VETMotorsports to partner
with Latus Racing, I think I was a good candidate.
The team liked my enthusiasm and mechanical
skill set and they were looking to add another team
member. It was just a great fit for everyone. ➤ What was your experience in the Marine Corps like?
My experience in the USMC was incredible! I felt like I was doing something
that my family was proud of. And that made me want to excel. The Marine
Corps molded me into the person I am today. ➤ What did you do/pursue after your discharge? First I went to college, because that’s what everyone told me to do. But that didn’t
work out. So my wife suggested I go do something I was passionate about and
something I would enjoy. So I went to Motorcycle Mechanics Institute.
➤ How did you find out about VETMotorsports? I found out through the Wounded Warrior Project that there was a new
organization called VETMotorsports that was looking for guys who were
interested in motorcycle racing.
➤W
hat are your expectations
for the rest of the season?
I plan to work as hard as I can and learn
as much as I can. I want to prove to
myself and everyone on the Latus
team that I’m a strong member of
the team.

2–3 Tbsps brown sugar
DIRECTIONS: To prevent the salmon fillet from curling up on the grill, score the
skin of the salmon by making three diagonal cuts across the back one way and three
diagonal cuts the other way, creating a diamond pattern. Be careful to only cut the
skin and not into the flesh. In a large pan, sprinkle the sea salt over the meat side
of the salmon fillet. Next sprinkle the dill weed over the salt. Finally, cover the dill
with brown sugar. Cover the pan and refrigerate the salmon for 2-3 hours, allowing
the salmon to cure and dissolve the brown sugar. Place the salmon, skin side down, on
a greased grill (olive oil applied with a paper towel works well) over indirect heat.
(Note: this means burners or charcoal to one side of the grill and food placed on the
opposite side of the grill.) Cover the grill and cook for 10-12 minutes or until the
salmon flakes when pierced with a folk. Do not flip when cooking.

Monica Robins is an Emmy award winning reporter well known
as one of Northeast Ohio’s most reliable sources for
health news. Monica is currently the Senior Health
Correspondent at WKYC Channel 3, Cleveland’s
NBC affiliate. Her reputation for fair, accurate,
and unbiased reporting has earned her the
respect of the region’s medical establishments
including The Academy of Medicine of
Cleveland and Northern Ohio. Monica is an
avid “biker” and sings the National Anthem
at Rally for the Troops, the Police Memorial
Run, and the Firefighters Memorial Run. Monica
was recently interviewed by our Ridin’ On senior
photographer Bill Kubiak.
The Voice of
Bill What was your first bike?
Monica 2000 Harley 883. I grew up riding Honda's
50s and actually learned on a Buell.
BK What is the farthest you’ve ridden?
MR No really long trips yet, my job at WKYC and being in two bands
prevent that. We like to go to the islands or just on country roads.
BK What are some of your favorite destinations?
MR I love going out Lake Road and I’m a big fan of the Metro
Parks. We got out towards Lorain, Huron, or Marblehead.

BK You play in two bands. Tell me about them.
MR I play in Monica Robins and the Whiskey Kings which is a
classic rock and roll band, and I also have Monica Robins
and the Ninja Cowboys which is modern country.
BK Have you made any CD’s?
MR No, we play original music, which is not what people
want to buy. We are mostly a cover band.
BK How did you get involved with Rally for the Troops?
MR I had sung the National Anthem for the Browns and Indians and
many local sports teams. John “Kiks” Kikol (Rally for the Troops
organizer) heard me and called me out of the blue and asked
me if I would sing for the troops. How could I say no to that?
BK H
ow long have you been performing the
National Anthem at Rally for the Troops?
MR I started with the first one in 2003. Singing for the
veterans inspires me to do the very best I can.
BK So that led to other events?
MR Yes, the Police Memorial Run and the Firefighters
Memorial Run, and the 9-11 Ride. Singing is
the least I can do for people who saved us.
Monica Robins, Channel 3 WKYC
Monica & husband Deke both ride, and
they met performing together in a local
band. Monica’s favorite rides are along
the lake and through the Metro Parks.

BK I heard your husband Deke Kumler proposed
to you in an unusual way?
MR We had just started dating and he went to the Harley dealer and
bought me a leather vest. He said he sat on a Dyna and almost
came home with it. I told him you come home with a Harley and
we’ll go to Vegas and get married. A week later he came home
and showed me the receipt for a new Dyna Wide Glide.
BK How long have you been married?
MR 16 years and 3 Harleys. It must be true love if I’m
still with him after he switched to BMW.
BK Deke, how did you meet Monica?
Deke I was the drummer in a band BFD. We needed a singer and
Monica came and she was hired, the rest is history.
BK What’s the best advice you can give?
MR My dad told me when I first got into TV to keep people
around you that will never let it go to your head.

REPORT
ROBBIE MADDISON
GOES OFF-ROADING IN
TAHITI
MOTORCYCLES ARE NOT MADE for
surfing. They do not float. They are not
waterproof. All of which were problems that
master stunt rider Robbie Maddison had to
overcome when he used one as a surfboard
on some of the most dangerous waves on
the planet. “We sank the motorcycle over a
hundred times,” he admits.
But none of that stopped the determined 34-year old Aussie daredevil
from combining his adult profession of riding with his childhood passion
of surfing to create Pipe Dream, a short video in which Maddison rides
the wicked waves of Tahiti’s Teahupo’o on a modified KTM 300 motocross
machine, sponsored by DC Shoes.
The four-minute video caps three years and 5,000 man-hours spent
working through dozens of iterations to nail the bike’s design. When
Maddison first cooked up this crazy idea, he sketched a motocrosser with a
ski on the front wheel and paddles on the rear tire…um, no.
So his team started tweaking the bike, finally settling on a larger plastic front
ski, packed the air intake with foam to prevent it from sucking in water, and
mounted an inflatable bag that would trigger when the bike began to sink.
Eventually, Maddison
could ride as far as 15 miles
without trouble or the need
for major repairs afterward.
All his hard work had paid
off, and he was having a blast.
“I’d feel like a child on an
amusement park ride, just
having the time of my life.”
So, in his career Maddo
has backflipped the Tower
Bridge in London, jumped
a football field in Vegas to
break the 300-foot barrier
that Evil Knievel once said
was impossible, jumped on
top of and over the Arc de Triomphe, rode a ski jump down a 185-foot drop,
and now he’s gone off-road to conquer one of the world’s most challenging
surfing spots. But that hardly means he’s done. “There’s plans to do some
other crazy stuff,” he teases.
ESPY Awards 2015 Best Action
Sports Athlete – RYAN DUNGEY!
WHEN THE ESPY AWARDS (Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly
Award) began over two decades ago in 1993, motorcycle competitors
were way off the radar.
That changed in 2007, when Travis Pastrana’s double backflip at the
X Games helped earn him the ESPY Award in Action Sports, bringing
motocross to the forefront of popular media through host, ESPN.
But Pastrana was the last motocross star to receive an ESPY award
– until this year. At ESPY Awards 2015, two-time Monster Energy
Supercross Champion Ryan Dungey received the top honors in the
Best Male Action Sports Athlete, overtaking popular
riders in disciplines such as skateboarding, BMX,
snowboarding and surfing.
Following his top honors at ESPY Awards this
year,
the 25-year-old Minnesota
native has showed the world
once again that motocross is
as mainstream as the other
popular sport
games.

CHASING SUMMER
NO RIDER EVER WANTS summer to end, so Sportsterz Bar & Grill and Goblin
Custom Cycle in Geneva-On-The-Lake put together Thunder On The Strip nearly
a decade ago to extend the season one more week past Labor Day for north coast
riders and biker-friendly area businesses along this touristy lakeside strip!
For nine years now, bikers have migrated to this lakeside resort that used to shutter
its seasonal shops after Labor Day, for a fond farewell-to-summer celebration. As a
bonus, by stretching out the season another weekend, bikers get the whole place all
to themselves and the businesses get to stay open for one last hurrah.
Sitting close to the OH/PA line, the rally (www.ThunderOnTheStrip.com) has
evolved into a regional favorite, serving up all the wanted biker attractions; with live
entertainment and events all weekend long, including a stunt team, parade, burnout
pit, bar hop, bull-riding, and a bounty of top-notch bands all four days, and vendors
galore, plus all the great eateries and drinkeries along the Lake Erie shoreline.
So prepare to stretch summer once
again, September 10-13, 2015!!

FROM A BROTHER’S
viewpoint, I had the
best one you could ask for!
You see, Russell James Shearer III (“Rusty” aka
“Shadow”) was not just my brother, but my best
friend and “father figure” all in one. He believed in
God & family and had a heart of gold that was open
to all. His long hair, leathers, boots & jeans didn’t
fit the stereotype for his 4.0+ GPA in high school. A
rare breed, Rusty loved riding from a very young
age, had common sense and was a
man of Freedom. His passion took
him to MMI and on to be a Tech at
Buckminn’s Harley. Lost from
us far too soon, at the age
of 21, in a freak accident with an 8-point buck; the
Xenia HOG Chapter has kept his beloved memory
alive for 24 years by helping children at Christmas
in his name. We are grateful to Buckminn’s
D&D Harley-Davidson, 1213 Cincinnati Ave/
Rt 42 in Xenia (937-376-3344), for continuing the
Rusty’s Ride tradition. A phenomenal event, the
ride provides lunch & homemade desserts, with
prizes, cash, music, gift baskets, auction, major
raffles, including a cool Glock, and of course,
beautiful scenery! This year’s Rusty’s Ride
happens soon on Saturday, September 12th, with
the goal to bring holiday joy to thousands more! I
still try to live my life to this day as a man that my
brother would’ve been proud of because of his
positive influence and I hope you’ll come join me
in celebrating one of the “good ones” by having
a good time helping good kids that need you.

IN A WORLD that seems bent on erasing history, especially American history,
there are one hundred and two minutes that we should NEVER FORGET. They
began at 8:46 AM on September 11, 2001 when American Flight 11 flew into
the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York City. Following was
9:03 as United Flight 175 struck the South Tower, at 9:37 American Flight
177 hit the Pentagon in Washington DC, 9:59 the South Tower collapses,
10:03 United Flight 93 crashes into the fields of Shanksville, Pennsylvania, and at
10:28 AM the North Tower collapses. Two thousand nine hundred and seventyseven died in those 102 minutes, including 343 firefighters and 72 police/port
authority officers. America then became involved in a long war against Terrorism,
which has resulted in almost 7,000 men & women becoming our most recent “FALLEN
HEROES”, who gave ALL in our fight with this global evil. On
September 6th, 2015, we will be honoring and remembering
those whose lives ended on 9/11/01 and our nation’s
Fallen Heroes with a Ceremony to be held at Brook Park,
Ohio’s Kennedy Park/Veterans Memorial/9-11 Memorial,
located on Sylvia Drive at 11 AM and motorcycle staging
begins at 10am. There will be FDNY & Ohio National
Guard speakers, along with 21-gun & musical salutes,
ending with a Processional Ride to Lake Erie HarleyDavidson in Avon for camaraderie. For more info, please

“WE HAVE TO DO SOMETHING for our Elders,” says film Director Michael
Rossato-Bennett. The first time he entered a Medicaid funded nursing
home he almost turned and ran. “I saw a hundreds of people the world had
forgotten, it was frightening to imagine their life as my own, but I couldn’t
help but imagine this. Imagine having no one, your mind is fading, your body
betraying you and you are experiencing this all alone. My heart almost broke!”
Then Henry Dryer (94) was wheeled in front of Michael’s camera, “This man
had been struggling with Dementia in this institution for over 10 years and
he sat in front of me in his chair, hunched over himself, seemingly lifeless. But, then we gave him his music, the music of his youth - Cab Calloway - and
something amazing happened! It was as if a switch was thrown, he started
dancing, and singing. It sent shivers up my spine, to see him become so alive! In that moment I knew I had to make this film! If music could wake a mind
like this, a lost mind, the world needed to know this!” The film that Michael
made called Alive Inside, won the prestigious 2014 Sundance Film Festival
Audience Award and a dozen others and has single-handedly helped change
the way people treat dementia sufferers worldwide!
Fast forward to March of 2014, when Wayne Mesker, CEO of Clevelandbased Worldstock Entertainment & former Board member of the Fallen Riders
Memorial Fund saw the film at the Cleveland International Film Festival.
Wayne says “I was so touched and moved by what I had witnessed, before the
final credits were finished rolling, my path was clear. After nearly 7 years of
building a Global network of caring creative artists, musicians, entrepreneurs,
politicians, etc., Wayne formed the Rock Against Dementia Project to reach
out to those people and others in the Music Industry. Beginning with a trip to
Nashville last July where he enlisted the aid of Musicians, Music Media people,
The NAMM Foundation & others, his efforts led to his appointment as Creative
Advocacy Director at the Alive Inside Foundation. “We know that those we
serve love Music and are still Alive Inside and we also realized that many of
them had a passion for motorcycles & probably still “Ride” in their memories.
Thus the First Annual “Rock & Ride” Against Dementia emerged! We hope
this event grows bigger in the years to come.”
Obviously, Rossato-Bennett and his team have passion for their mission and
that is good, because it is a global, potent one;“We’re going to change the way
people think about aging in this country and we’re going to do it with music. Music has so much to teach us about who we are and our capacity to give to
each other!”

INDIA USING H-D STREET
POLICE 750 MOTORCYCLES
Victory Unveils
Empulse TT
INDIA POLICE ARE NOW using Customized Harley-Davidson Street 750 motorcycles
as police bikes. The Harley-Davidson dealer in Ahmedabad has delivered six
custom Street 750 bikes to the Gujarat, India Police Department.
This is the first time that a police department in
India has used a Harley Street model.
The motorcycles will be used primarily
for quick response actions by the police
department, including the escort of senior
ministers and visiting dignitaries and
emergency response as part of a
natural disaster response team,
among other official duties.
Electric Motorcycle
POLARIS FORESEES ELECTRIC as an integral part of
their future, and after working with Brammo for three
years Victory is launching the 2016 Victory Empulse
TT, a street-legal electric motorcycle featuring race
proven electric power with the quickest charging
battery on the market, a top speed over 100 mph
and range up to 100 miles. The Victory Empulse TT is
built on the innovative design and engineering that
produced the fastest U.S. electric motorcycle at the
2015 Isle of Man TT Zero race.
“We have always been known for great handling
and power, so the Empulse TT is an ideal fit in
the expanding Victory lineup,” said Motorcycle
Product Director Gary Gray. “The Empulse TT
was developed primarily as an electric motorcycle
delivering a sporty ride,” said Victory Electric Product
Manager Joshua Katt. “With dual ride modes -- ECO
and SPORT -- to choose from and the addition of a
gearbox, the Empulse TT is a versatile motorcycle
that can be used for impressively sporty riding or as
a casual commuter.
The zero-emission Empulse TT shares some DNA
with the original Brammo Empulse R motorcycle, with
the biggest change being its high-capacity 10.4kWh
Brammo Power Lithium Ion battery, which can fully
charge in 3.9 hours -- making it the fastest charging
battery on the market.
Victory has been working with Brammo since 2011,
but in January 2015 Victory’s parent company, Polaris
Industries, acquired Brammo’s motorcycle assets.
Since then, Victory engineers have been working with
the Brammo product team to achieve improvements in
battery capacity, display function and handling.

American Headquarters
COMPANY WANTS TO ESTABLISH 100 DEALERSHIPS IN AMERICAN CITIES
ROYAL ENFIELD MOTORS, the world’s
oldest motorcycle company in continuous
production, is establishing its North
American headquarters and a dealership
in Wisconsin, the India-based manufacturer
has announced. The headquarters and
dealership are both scheduled to open
later this year in Milwaukee’s Historic Third
Ward.
The dealership will be Royal Enfield’s first
company-owned store in the U.S., according
to Rod Copes, president of Royal Enfield
North America, who says the company
wants to establish about 100 dealerships in
American cities, a mix of company-owned
stores and independent businesses.
“I live here, so I am biased. But in my
mind, Milwaukee is kind of the center of
motorcycling in the United States,”
Ridin’ On Motorcycle Magazine
said Copes, a former Harley-Davidson
executive who led Harley’s efforts in
Asia and other emerging markets.
“We view this as kind of our first flagship
dealership,” he added.
Royal Enfield produced its first
motorcycles in Britain in 1901, two years
before William S. Harley and Arthur
Davidson built their first motorcycles for
the general public. The company, known
for its bikes that capture the essence of oldschool motorcycling -- a throbbing engine,
simple electronics and a low price -- is
revered in India, one of the world’s largest
markets for two-wheel vehicles. Royal
Enfield is expected to build about 450,000
motorcycles this year, consisting of three
500cc models; the Bullet 500, the Classic 500
and Continental GT 535 Café Racer.

You Have the Right to
Remain Silent…
Please Use It!
If you’ve ever stopped by one of our booths at your local bike event,
you probably have one of our cards. For those of you unlucky few that
don’t have our card, stop by the office and grab one. But for now, the
card reads —>
Jerri Mitchell-Tharp
If you are ever in a situation where a police officer is questioning you about anything, and I mean anything, take
out that card and read it again. Whether you are stopped for a DUI, or for any reason, keep your thoughts, and
words, to yourself. Police officers are highly trained in interrogation techniques and will use that to obtain
incriminating statements from you. This is especially true in DUI cases. Think about the simple question:
“How much have you had to drink tonight?” Surprisingly, in most of our cases where this question is asked, it
is actually answered. Usually the answer is 2 or 3. Doesn’t seem like a lot, right? Wrong. Saying you had 2 or
3 beers, which is an admission of drinking, pretty much gives the cop all the probable cause he needs to
continue keeping you detained to gather more evidence. Words are not simple. The questions that cops ask
are not designed to give anyone the benefit of the doubt.
You have to be aware that there are numerous tricks that officers use to get statements out of you. I have
actually seen instances where police officers try to: intimidate people into making statements; act like they
identify or feel sorry for the suspect; deliberately confuse; and, believe it or not, officers are allowed to lie to the
suspect. The justice system in this country is based on a simple idea: You are not required to prove your
innocence to a police officer who wants to question you. The Constitution specifically states that you (1) are
innocent until proven guilty, (2) have the right to remain silent, and, among other things, (3) have the right to
have a lawyer present while being questioned by the police.
Police officers are entitled to your name when you are stopped; give them that and nothing else. The most
important thing to remember when you get pulled over for DUI, speeding, or anything, you have the right to
remain silent. USE IT!

STREET
SMARTS
Passenger–Partners
Here is a sample of tips that can assist your
passenger and give them confidence for the ride:
• Don’t mount up or dismount until the
operator tells you it’s OK.
• Hold onto the operator’s waist.
• Tell the passenger that when going around curves, they
should put their chin on the operators turn side shoulder.
For instance, “when going around a curve to the right,
put your chin on my right shoulder.” This ensures that the
passenger leans properly. It’s like bobsledding on two
wheels! The operator’s and passenger’s bodies should lean
into the direction of the turn.
• If crossing an obstacle, if possible, rise up out of the seat
and use your legs as shock absorbers. (The operator
should also rise up, if possible.)
• Do not wiggle or shift weight or move around
unnecessarily. Try to keep still in the seat.
• Know that your movements can affect the stability and
direction of the motorcycle.
• Keep feet on the pegs, especially at stops.
5
WHEN I HEAR SOMEONE talk about their passenger, it is usually complimentary. They
say things like, “I don’t even realize she’s there” and “she seems to predict every move”.
Rock star passengers; they make a good ride even better. But how did they get that way?
Instruction? Experience? Learn the hard way? Many times, a passenger has gotten advice
from the motorcycle operator.
If you are taking a passenger for a ride, there are several factors to consider concerning your
passenger. Have they ever been a passenger on a motorcycle before? Are you sure? Believe it
or not, people lie about these things! If they have ridden before as a passenger, do they know
how to lean in curves? To prevent problems on the road, it is wise to politely educate your
passenger before you start out. For the new passenger (or one you suspect has never ridden),
you can give them some rules for being a good passenger. Even experienced passengers can
benefit from a quick review of tips, such as pointing out where the hot pipes are.
Whether the person sitting behind you is a friend, relative, new acquaintance or a child, they
indeed are the most precious cargo you’ll ever carry. It’s a huge responsibility. t makes you
stop and think; or at least it should … A motorcyclist should carefully consider the decision
to carry a passenger, because it is different than riding solo. The bike handles differently.
Starting and stopping takes longer. Cornering requires more finesse. Acceleration and
deceleration with passengers is different. It takes more skill to carry a passenger safely
than riding solo.
As an operator, some questions to think about are: How much road experience do you
have? Have you completed a rider training course? Are you comfortable with your braking
and cornering abilities? Can you start out and stop smoothly in a straight line? Probably the
most important question of all is “are you prepared to be totally responsible for the safety of
your passenger?” If the answer is “no” to any of these questions, then take the time to assess
and address the issues before taking someone else’s life into your hands. When you carry a
passenger, that’s what you’re doing.
The operator of the motorcycle is responsible for the safety of the passenger. If the operator
(you!) is dressed in protective gear and your passenger is not, and he/she gets hurt…guess
who the lawyers come after? YOU! The operator is responsible for making sure that the
passenger is properly dressed. To me, properly dressed means “dressed for a crash.” Face
it - no one wants to be in a crash, but stuff happens. Make sure they are dressed appropriately.
Shorts and sandals don’t protect anything. Also, if the operator is required to
wear a helmet by law, then the passenger is probably required, too. Make sure
they do.
If the motorcycle operator is riding with a temporary permit, in most states,
this prohibits them from legally carrying passengers. If an accident occurs
under these conditions, and the passenger is injured, the operator may have
the additional headache of dealing with the insurance company, who will
likely take issue with covering the expenses of the illegally carried passenger.
To sum up the issues with carrying passengers, I can offer this advice: 1) Get
trained and comfortable riding solo first; 2) Brief your passenger on how to be
a good co-rider; 3) Make sure you and your passenger wear proper protective
riding gear to help insure safety; and as always, 4) Practice, practice, practice!

…
It's all Fun & Games, until ...
OKAY, HERE I AM – the wet blanket, the party pooper – with an annoying
reminder that just because you CAN do something does not mean you should.
I’m talking about Biker Games.
Last month’s Ridin’ On featured several columns on Biker Games or Rodeos.
The accompanying photos show riders engaged in all kinds of fun – the
weenie bite, burnouts, bar stool races and more. Articles mention events
like slow races, bike and trike pulls, jousting (YIKES!), riding the plank, and
hockey. Since alcohol can be part of the fun, this can be a recipe for disaster.
One photo shows a bar stool race participant hitting the dirt. Accidents can
and do happen. I know – here I am the fun killer!
Several years ago I worked with a motorcycle organization looking to lower
their chapter’s insurance costs. The package policy was very affordable – but
there was an exclusion for “sporting events.” Being familiar with Murphy’s Law
of If something can go wrong, it probably will, we asked for clarification from
the company. Would Biker Games be considered a “Sporting Event”? The
ruling came in that IF there was an accident with injury or property damage
during a Biker Game, the insurance policy would protect the group from
lawsuits filed by SPECTATORS, but would provide no coverage for suits filed
by PARTICIPANTS. The thinking being that participants should understand
and accept the risks, and have protection in place for their own damage or
injury.
Which leads us to you, the motorcycle operator and your insurance. Think
your policy covers you (up to your policy limits) for anything you do on the
bike? Sorry to burst your bubble, but that is NOT the case. All personal motor
vehicle insurance policies have exclusions – situations in which coverage is
invalid. Common exclusions include: Intentional Acts (purposely running
someone down in a road rage incident), Business Use (using the vehicle to
transport people or goods for a fee, delivery, funeral escort, or any other
business use) and Racing and Related Activities.
That last category – Racing – has been expanded to include a lot of activities.
Following is the racing and related activities exclusion from one motorcycle
policy:
Liability Policy Excludes:
bodily injury or property damage resulting from, or sustained during
practice or preparation for:
a. any pre-arranged or organized:
(i) racing;
(ii) stunting;
(iii) speed or demolition contest or activity; or
b. any riding activity conducted on a permanent or temporary racetrack,
racecourse, or during any closed course event.
This exclusion does not apply to use of a motorcycle for escorting participants
in charitable racing events;
This wording is fairly comprehensive! Racing is not covered. This would
include slow racing, or any activity with “race” in the title. Any preparation or
practice is excluded. Any event held at a temporary or permanent track, or
race course is excluded. And any event at a “closed course” is excluded. Any
STUNT is excluded. While it is not a wheelie, I can easily see a ride the plank
or a weenie bite event called a “Stunt”. All of these events are held on closed
courses, they are not on the open public road system. So, if there is an incident,
the insurance company could deny payment of damage and injury claims.
Every personal motor vehicle policy will have slightly different wording for
their exclusions, so your policy might not be as air tight as the one above. And
there are some specialized policies available for racers and stunt persons who
are willing to pay the BIG BUCKS for additional protection. But in most cases it
would be safe to assume you are not covered under your regular motorcycle
policy. Riders, engaging in a Biker Game once or twice a year will not find it
feasible to pay 100s of dollars for a few hours of fun. The key here, as I always
say, is to be aware that your policy might not cover you if you participate in
a Biker Game or Rodeo. You may have to pay repairs to your bike yourself.
You may have to file your injury claim directly to your health care provider,
assuming you have health insurance.
The more serious issue is if you injure someone else or damage property
other than your own. Do they have health insurance to pay for their injuries?
Do you have the cash or assets to pay their damage or injury? You will also
need funds to hire an attorney. What if your bike is damaged or you are injured
by someone else?
As an insurance agent, we see a lot of accidents and damage and we are
understandably cautious. We don’t use candles in the house. If we use the
fireplace, we let the ashes sit a minimum of 10 days before we clean up in case
of hot embers. And we do not participate in auto crosses and bike games. If
you choose to join in the fun, please use caution. If things seem to be getting
out of hand, if the organizers are too lax about the course layout and spectators
are too close, if other participants have consumed too much alcohol to stand,
let alone ride – walk away. And if anyone gives you a hard time, just tell them
your insurance agent said not to!
P.S. The Oregonia Hill Climb is coming up. I’m going to go out on a limb and
say that coverage may be denied if you participate there too!
EDITOR’S NOTE: Yeah, Karen may be right, and a buzz-kill, but Ridin’ On is
about Bikers embracing the lifestyle and enjoying the thrill of motorcycling;
so ride informed but have FUN, and don’t fall down! 

Desperate Measures!
Tell ’em you saw it in Ridin’ On! we will not turn to God. It’s when we run out of options that we turn to God!
What is it that YOU need? Jesus the Intercessor is ready, willing and able
to supply it; but first you have to get DESPERATE! I ask you today, are you
desperate for a change in your life? Or are you still looking to do it your way?
God will tighten the screws and bring the hammer down on you until you
have tried everything you can think of. Till you have done everything you can
possibly do and when you have reached your limits and you have run out of
options … YOU WILL TURN TO GOD FOR HELP!
The act of desperation is the unveiling of TRUE Belief and Faith. No one
else was healed in the house and no one else was healed in the crowd…
WHY? Because they were satisfied they were doing the best they could or
satisfied they were doing what they wanted to do, no one else was desperate!
Desperation can come from two ways; by circumstances or our own doing. It’s
also desperation that causes a drug addict to do whatever they can do to get
a fix. It’s desperation that can cause a person to do terrible things. But if that
total fear is relinquished to the Lord, doors can be opened and problems can
be solved.
Don’t let your last hope pass you by! Be like the three instances above
and search out the Lord! Are you DESPERATE or are you satisfied with your
relationship with Jesus? What are you desperate for? A blessing … a healing
… a closer walk with God … a better prayer life … a more obedient life ... a
better relationship with your family … your spouse? Ask and say…
I HAVE NO OPTIONS!
I’M AT THE POINT OF DESPERATION!
Jesus likes to work when your back is against the wall.
With your request of him and your belief in him, he can show you what he can
do! It’s the convicting power of the Holy Ghost that brings you to the point of
desperation, which draws you to Jesus Christ for Salvation.
Let the Lord take care of things! Remember that coming to Jesus to be
saved is as easy as A.B.C.
ADMIT you’re a sinner! Romans 3:23 For all have sinned and come short of
the glory of God.
BELIEVE that Jesus died for
you! Romans 5:8 But God
commendendeth his love
toward us, in that while we
were yet sinners CHRIST
died for us.
CONFESS and repent of
your sins! Romans 10:9-10
If thou will confess with thy
mouth the Lord Jesus, and
believe in thy heart that God
hath raised him (Jesus) from
the dead thou shall be saved.
For with the heart man believeth
unto righteousness; and with the
mouth confession is made unto Salvation.
MARK 2:12 WE NEVER SAW IT IN THIS FASHION. Desperate people doing
things out of pure desperation! Desperate people do things that are different,
unusual and out of the ordinary. We will look at three separate episodes of
people that did things that would not be common for the average person to do,
and because they were willing to be different they had victory in their life. Are
you willing to be special or are you satisfied with the way things are in your
life? The choice is up to you!
Mark 2:1-3 Jesus visited the town of Capernaum and after some days, word
carried about that Jesus was staying in a house. A man sick with Palsy was
carried by four friends to the place where Jesus was. The crowd was so great
they couldn’t get in! So the four men that carried the sick man had to overcome
the obstacle of having no way to get in the house. They looked at the options
they had and the only solution they had seemed to have was to make a hole
in the roof. They became desperate and tore off the roof and let their friend in
down through the hole.
Mark 5:25 A woman with an issue of blood for 12 years had spent all she
had to cure the illness but continued to get worse. She became desperate and
searched out Jesus and said, “if I can but touch his clothing I will be made
well.”
Mark 10:46 Blind Bartimaeus was sitting by the side of the road begging
when he heard that Jesus was passing by. He became desperate as this may’ve
been his only chance to be with the Healer and began to cry out loudly, “Jesus,
have mercy on me!”
Three different incidents of desperation brought victory, because in all cases
they were looking to the Lord for help. They all had obstacles to overcome;
but desperate people don’t let obstacles stop them. Obstacles only increase
the situation for those to try harder, or to quit and give up. Desperation causes
people to do things they would not normally do. It moves you out of your
comfort zone. Desperation can be good or bad, depending on the reason. It
causes you to become reckless and move you into a dangerous zone where
nothing else matters, whether your comfort or your safety; nothing matters
except the task at hand.
The problem is that most people are SATISFIED and not DESPERATE.
Desperate people do not allow obstacles to stand in their way and will find
a way to make it happen! They will try different things until they run out of
options. They will try faith, but sometimes it’s not faith that you need, you
already have faith. Romans 12:3 says God has already given us a measure
of faith. It’s not necessarily having a need. We all have needs and God said in
Philippians 4:19 he would supply everything you need.
Sometimes it’s the total lack of options that we really need!
Life throws a lot of curves our way, or sometimes it’s our own bad choices,
and we try to handle things ourselves when we really should be putting these
tribulations in God’s hands. He told us he would be there for us always but we
seem to forget HE IS THE ALMIGHTY!
When we’re at our rope’s end, it can be the lack of options that brings us to
the point of DESPERATION for the right reasons.
We think we’re smart enough or strong enough to take care of life’s big
bumps or the holes we have dug ourselves into and as long as we have options,
—John Dunn

Some time back there was an Engineering
Convention in San Francisco. This was only for
people who had an IQ of 140 or higher. Several of
the members went out for lunch at a local cafe.
When they sat down, one of them discovered
that their salt shaker contained pepper, and their
pepper shaker was full of salt.
In response to this conundrum, the group set
out to solve the dilemma by devising a system
that would allow them to swap the contents of the
2 bottles without spilling any, and using only the
implements at hand? Clearly this was a job for
engineering minds.
The group debated the problem amd presented
ideas and finally, came up with a brilliant solution
involving a napkin, 2 spoons, a straw, & an empty
saucer. They called the waitress over to dazzle her
with their solution.
“Ma’am,” they said, “we couldn’t help but notice
that the pepper shaker contains salt and the salt
shaker contains pepper.” But before they could
finish, the waitress interrupted them.
“Oh, sorry about that.” She leaned over the table,
unscrewed the caps of both bottles, and switched
them. There was dead silence at the table.

The officer shakes his head.“I’m probably gonna have

The guy said, “But this isn’t just any dog. This dog

The bartender replied, “Well, if he can play that

Attention to detail is key for
any restoration project.
BY JACK BAHLE
EDWARD BAHLE IS an up and coming bike
builder. At the young age of 20, he has restored
numerous bicycles, a Solex motorbike, and a
1947 Harley-Davidson “45” Bobber. Edward
has just finished his latest restoration project,
a 1957 Harley-Davidson Model 165 Lightweight
“Hummer”.
Everybody out there is looking under rocks
to find old motorcycles. This project fell
into Edward’s lap. Edward was at this year’s
International Motorcycle Show at Cleveland’s
I-X Center helping out at the Antique Motorcycle
Club of America’s (AMCA) display booth. When
this older gentleman from Sheffield Lake named
Walter walked up and said he had an old Harley
for sale, Edward said: “I want it!!!”
Edward waited three cold winter months

RISKY BUSINESS | 1 in 8 Drivers Uninsured!
AS YOU’RE OUT THERE enjoying the dog days of
summer, taking a long-needed road trip or simply
running around town, take heed of recently released
data from the insurance industry that reveals one in
eight motorists is driving uninsured!
I can attest to that, as many of my personal injury
clients have been victimized by uninsured drivers,
with no assets and nothing to go after unless the
injured rider carries their own insurance in the form
of Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist coverage;
and in as high amounts as you can afford if you want
to CYA; hospital costs, rehab, lost work and property
damage, not to mention pain and suffering, loss of
future income, etc., in case one of those 12.6% of
uninsured drivers hits you.
Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage
reimburses policyholders in an accident involving
an uninsured, underinsured or hit-and-run driver
up to the policy limits. Twenty states and the District
of Columbia have mandatory requirements for
uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage. A
handful of states, including Nevada and Texas, have
passed laws and begun to develop and implement
online auto insurance verification systems to identify
uninsured motorists.
According to estimates released from the
Insurance Research Council, the rate of uninsured
drivers is actually going down modestly as more
states and police departments are cracking down on
the scofflaws. In its “Uninsured Motorists” study, the
IRC found that the number of uninsured motorists
nationwide peaked in 1993 at 16.0%, and has
declined moderately to 12.6% in 2012, but that’s still
29.7 million driving without insurance, or roughly
one in every eight drivers who pass you by… despite
laws in most states requiring minimum coverages.
And some states are more risky than others, as
the following 10 states have the highest uninsured
numbers: Oklahoma has the most with over a quarter
uninsureds, 25.9% which is more than one in four;
followed by Florida 23.8%; Mississippi 22.9%; New
Mexico 21.6%; Michigan 21.0%; Tennessee 20.1%;
Alabama 19.6%; Rhode Island 17.0%; Colorado
16.2%; and number ten Washington 16.1%.
Ohio ranks above the national average with 13.5%
uninsured drivers, or about one in seven!
The moral of this study? Protect yourself and your
family by making sure you’re fully covered, with
Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist coverage
included in your insurance policy!
With more than 10 million accidents a year across
America, chances are good that everyone will likely
be involved in at least one motor vehicle accident in
his or her lifetime, and banking on the other person
being dutiful and carrying the proscribed insurance
coverage is like playing Russian Roulette with your
life, lifestyle and livelihood.
Making matters worse, the Property Casualty
Insurers Association of America estimates that
unlicensed and uninsured drivers are involved in
more than 20% of the fatal accidents in the U.S (that’s
one in five!).
Even if you’re not at fault in the accident, you
can walk away (if you’re lucky) with huge hospital
bills and household expenses piling up without
a paycheck to pay them with. You could lose your
motorcycle or your car due to property damage
that isn’t covered, and possibly lose your home from
inability to pay your bills or mortgage while you’re
laid up in recovery.
Unfortunately, even if you’re lucky enough to be
hit by an insured driver, most drivers only carry
the minimum limits established by state law, such
as here in Ohio which as of 2013 requires $25,000
bodily injury liability/$50,000 bodily injury liability
maximum per accident for all injured, and at least
$25,000 to cover damage to other driver’s vehicles
or any other property damage besides your own
(Kentucky is 25/50, Indiana is 25/50, West Virginia is
25/40, and Pennsylvania is only 15/30).
In my personal experience in handling
motorcycle accident claims, I can tell you that it’s not
uncommon for a rider to sustain multiple fractures in
an accident that can easily reach $100,000 in medical
bills and rehab.
Not to mention the fact that a relatively minor
impact can easily total a $20,000 motorcycle! You
could wind up paying off a note for a bike you no
longer can ride.
As you can see, it doesn’t take long to accumulate
bills in excess of the state minimum limits. Even if
you have health insurance, your medical providers
won’t wait long without payment of the remaining
balance before sending it to collection. Adding
insult to injury; there goes your credit along with
your credit score.
Then there’s the really serious injuries; crushed
legs, head trauma (can occur with or without a
helmet), severed spinal cords and the worst possible,
loss of life. Now we’re talking about claims worth
several hundred thousand dollars. Perhaps, a million
or more. Who’s going to pay?
Here’s how UM/UIM works, and why it is so
important to have;
Uninsured Motorist coverage pays for injuries
and related expenses you incur that the at-fault party
is legally liable for. The amount paid is subject to
the limits of Uninsured Motorist coverage that you
choose and may include expenses such as medical
treatment and lost wages.
Underinsured Motorist coverage pays for the
amount of injuries and related expenses that aren’t
covered by the at-fault person’s insurance. In other
words, Underinsured Motorist coverage is designed
to cover the gap between the other person’s liability
limits and the amount of your injury expenses, up to
the Underinsured Motorist limits you select.
UM/UIM is optional and cannot exceed your
Liability coverage limits, but without such coverage
you could be holding the bag for the total amount
due, or a huge chunk that is not recoverable and you
are responsible for.
I’ve heard many times, “but it wasn’t my fault!
I shouldn’t have to pay a dime.” In theory, you’re
right. But this is about reality. And in the real world,
chances are that if you become severely injured
while riding, the person that hit you won’t have any
insurance or doesn’t carry enough to adequately
compensate you for your losses. Moreover, he or
she probably won’t have sufficient assets to make
up the difference, leaving you with an empty and
unenforceable Judgment and the rest of your life to
contemplate the “what if’s."
Often, being injured in a traffic accident carries
costs in excess of hospital bills and repairs to
your vehicle. Your injuries can prevent you from
returning to your job. In some cases, the impact to
your earnings may be temporary, but it can also be
permanent. An at-fault driver’s insurance company
will pay for your medical bills (assuming the driver
has sufficient coverage), but they often won’t pay for
loss of earning capacity. Uninsured/underinsured
motorist coverage will usually fill the gap and
compensate you for your lost wages.
The best solution is to C-Y-A (Cover Your Assets)
by buying as much coverage as you can. A 100/300
policy is barely adequate, but far better than what
I’ll wager most of you carry now. It’s relatively
inexpensive, and you can often offset the cost by
choosing higher deductibles to lower your premium
amount.
Talk to your agent to review your policy, and
choose the coverages that best suit you and your
personal circumstances. For example, if you have a
family, own your house, operate your own company,
or own other assets, plan ahead to adequately
protect them.
Hopefully, you’ll never need it, but like a poncho
in your saddlebags, it’s there for a rainy day.

“I CAN SEE CLEARLY NOW” is a song written and recorded
by John Lester Nash, Jr. in Houston, Texas; he began as a
pop singer in the 1950s, and his hit song achieved success

“see” things and facilitates a dynamic life. That is why
it is important that we take care of this “wonderful” gift of
sight. If “Seeing is VIP,” why do we ride motorcycles with

Tucked down in the Cincy-Northern Kentucky
reading area is a gem of a vintage show that’s been going
on for over a quarter century! Whether you are an antique aficionado or a mod or a rocker
or just an all out gearhead, this is one sweet show! The Classic British Motorcycle
Club of Cincinnati (CBMC) hosts this Vintage Motorcycle Rally & Show for
charity and don’t let the club name fool you, as it is open to all brands
and has classes for American, European, Japanese, and of course, British
models. The main criterion is that the bike be 1990 or older. It’s been
remarked that it’s one of the best vintage shows in the region!
The CBMC is a group of roughly 60 owners of old British motorcycles
who meet monthly in members’ garages to support each other’s
eccentric interest in their cranky, snorty steeds and to try
to promote a similar interest in the riding public.
They are devoted to helping members and
non-members alike to repair, restore,
preserve and ride these old bikes, with
members who’ve worked at British
bike dealerships or are craftsmen
or know craftsmen. A fine bunch of
folks of varying expertise that enjoy
wrenching and bringing a heap of
rusted metal back to being a treasure!
Quite a few hundred attended last
year’s event, which is held at the Boone
County Fairgrounds, 5819 Idlewild Rd
in Burlington, KY right over the Ohio River
by the Cincinnati Airport. The proceeds of the
rally were given to the Council on Child Abuse and
two Hospice organizations. Very worthy causes all. It was
a fun, family affair with plenty to do and see, especially the amazing array
of fine vintage iron. For 2015, the CBMC has greatly expanded the rally to
include a “Show What You Rode” competition on Saturday! Also,
the presence of a lot of new bike dealers who have a
retro model in their line-up, such as Harley-Davidson,
Indian, Triumph, Moto Guzzi, Honda, Yamaha, Royal
Enfield and Ural will be represented, as well as
the Vintage Japanese Motorcycle Club (VJMC).
Along with a Swap Meet, excellent for
those hard to find parts, there will be
unique vendors specializing in gauge
rebuilds, sidecar fabrication, pinstriping
and much more! It’s an exciting time for this
great Vintage Rally!

ROCK-N-ROLL CITY Opens in Cleveland
HARLEY-DAVIDSON
Photos by Bill Bish & Bill Kubiak
By Bill Bish
FOUNDED IN 1929, Cleveland Harley-Davidson
had served the northeast Ohio motorcycle
community for nearly a century, and now under
new owners Mike & Franscene Davis the
dealership has relocated, rebuilt and is rebranded
as Rock-N-Roll City Harley-Davidson to roll out
its own legacy.
That new heritage was heralded in on Friday, July
24, 2015 with an official chain-cutting ceremony to
commemorate opening the doors to the public,
followed by a gala Grand Opening celebration on
Saturday featuring live music, food & beverages,
product vendors, door prizes & giveaways and
entertainment throughout the festive occasion.
Now located at 4985 West 150th Street near the
airport in Cleveland, the sprawling dealership is
designed around a rock-n-roll theme throughout,
with many memorabilia details, demonstrating
once again that “Cleveland Rocks!”
Mike Davis told Ridin’ On that they chose the
name ‘Rock-N-Roll City Harley-Davidson’ to honor
the rich musical history of Cleveland. “We’re
going to deliver the Harley soul to the city of Rock
& Roll.”
This is the fourth Harley-Davidson dealership
in Ohio for the Davis’, who also own Adventure
Harley-Davidson in Dover, opened in 2003; Mad
River Harley-Davidson in Sandusky, opened in
2010; and Rubber City Harley-Davidson in Akron,
opened in 2012.
Questioned about his immediate plans for the
new dealership, Davis told us “Like our other
dealerships, Rock-N-Roll City Harley-Davidson
will be a destination dealership, so watch closely
as a new tradition is born!”
The ceremonial “chain cutting”
ceremony on July 24, 2015 (pictured
at top) marked the Grand Opening of
Rock-N-Roll City Harley-Davidson.
Mike & Franscene Davis are presented a 100th Issue
THANK YOU plaque from Bill & Darlene Bish of Ridin’
On, to show our appreciation for their dealership’s
years of support, going back to Cleveland HarleyDavidson, and for advertising with us in every one of
those 100 issues since the beginning!

customers, staff and well-wishers, welcoming
