A colt by Tapit sold for $725,000 to Mike Repole
to lead the way as Tuesday’s second session of the
Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co. spring sale of 2-yearolds in training improved on the prior day’s
opener by finishing with across-the-board gains.
A total of 196 juveniles changed hands during
the session for total receipts of $15,573,000, a 17
percent gain compared with last year’s second
session, when 213 horses sold for $13,272,500. The
average price of $79,454 was up 28 percent from
$62,312 last year, while the median of $48,500
climbed 21 percent from $40,000 last year. The
buyback percentage rose from 12 percent in
the 2013 sale’s second session to 19 percent on
Tuesday.
The $725,000 session topper by Tapit is the highest-priced juvenile of the sale so far, topping the
$550,000 Mineshaft colt who led Monday’s opening session.
The colt, who breezed a furlong in 10 1/5 seconds
at last week’s under-tack preview show, is out
of the stakes-winning and Grade 2-placed More
Than Ready mare Ready For Fortune. De Meric
Sales consigned the colt, as agent.
The session’s highest-priced filly, and second
most expensive offering overall, was a Harlan’s
Holiday filly purchased for $525,000 by Donato
Lanni, as agent for Kaleem Shah. Consigned
by Eisaman Equine, agent, the filly breezed in
9 4/5 seconds last week. She is out of the winning
Mr. Greeley mare Ruby Summer, dam of three
winners from five starters.
Through two sessions, OBS reported 380 horses
sold for gross receipts of $27,543,500. a 11 percent
increase compared with $24,904,500 from 415 sold
in 2013. The two-session average of $72,483 marks
a 21 percent improvement compared with $60,011
last year, while the $47,000 median is up 27 percent
over $37,000 in 2013.
The third of four OBS spring sessions begins at
10:30 a.m. Eastern on Wednesday. The sale continues through Thursday.

Derby Watch: Stewart finds himself on bubble again
By Jay Privman
Dallas Stewart went into last month’s
Grade 2 Louisiana Derby knowing that a
one-two finish with his runner Commanding Curve would put him in the field for the
140th Kentucky Derby.
Those dreams were dealt a serious
blow the first jump out of the gate, when
Commanding Curve was mugged by Rise
Up. Commanding Curve did well to rally for
third, giving him 20 Kentucky Derby qualifying points. At the time, it looked like that
might not be enough to get into the Derby,
but defections by horses with more points –
including Toast of New York, Constitution,
Midnight Hawk, and Cairo Prince – have
left Commanding Curve, as of Tuesday,
officially just one spot away from securing
a Derby berth.
Stewart remains hopeful that Commanding Curve can get in, and his anxiety is
assuaged by having climbed a much higher
hill a year ago with Golden Soul.
Last year marked the first Derby that
Churchill Downs switched to a points
system after three decades of using graded
stakes earnings to determine the field.
Golden Soul had a mere 14 points after his
final prep, a fourth-place finish in the Louisiana Derby. He just did get into the Derby,
then ran second to Orb at odds of 34-1.
“It kind of all fell apart last year, and
there’s a chance it could happen this year,
too,” Stewart said Tuesday from his barn at
Churchill Downs. “There are some behind
us hoping to get in, too.
“We knew that if he ran at least second in
the Louisiana Derby, he was in. When he
finished third, we knew it was risky business. It’s unfortunate some horses get hurt.
You hate to see it. But you have to be ready if
given the opportunity. You have to be ready
if your number’s called, like any sport.”
Commanding Curve has run twice this
year. He was sixth under Robby Albarado in
the Grade 2 Risen Star Stakes in February
prior to the Louisiana Derby.
“He finished really good [in the Louisiana
Derby],” Stewart said. “Robby said he didn’t
mind the dirt, didn’t mind the traffic.”
Albarado has committed to Medal Count,
the Grade 1 Blue Grass Stakes runner-up,
for the Derby, so Stewart has secured Shaun
Bridgmohan for Commanding Curve. Last
fall, Commanding Curve scored the lone
win of his six-race career over maidens at
Churchill Downs with Bridgmohan aboard.
“When you have a 2-year-old that wins
a two-turn, mile-and-a-sixteenth race at
4
Barbara D. Livingston
Dallas Stewart trained last year’s Kentucky Derby runner-up Golden Soul, and
took the 2006 Kentucky Oaks with Lemons Forever.
Churchill Downs in the fall, it makes you
feel really good,” Stewart said.
Stewart has yet to win the Derby, but
he was an integral part of the team that
prepared the filly Winning Colors for her
Derby victory in 1988. Stewart, who eventually rose to be an assistant trainer with
D. Wayne Lukas, was the exercise rider for
Winning Colors at Churchill Downs after
she arrived from Santa Anita.
“She was a special horse,” he said. “I had
never been around a horse like that. She
was a real tough horse. She trained beautiful for the race.”
Commanding Curve has had two works
since the Louisiana Derby, both at Churchill Downs, including a strong five-furlong
drill in 1:00.40 last Friday. His final work
will be Friday or Saturday, depending on
the weather, Stewart said.
“We saw with the points situation last
year that a lot of things can happen,”
Stewart said. “You just have to keep your
emotions down and train your horse.”
The horse currently in the top 20 with
the shakiest prospects of remaining in the
Derby field is Chitu, who is scheduled to run
Saturday in the Grade 3 Derby Trial. He is
ranked 12th, with 54 points.
Harry’s Holiday, tied on points with
Commanding Curve but ranked higher,
at 20th, owing to the tie-breaker (earnings
in non-restricted stakes), is certain for the
race, trainer Mike Maker said Tuesday,
though a jockey assignment has not been
made.
Entries for the Derby are taken April 30,
and posts are drawn later that day. In addition to the maximum of 20 in the main body
of the race, up to four also-eligibles can be
entered. Scratch time is 9 a.m. on May 2, the
day before the Derby.

Romantica stands out in Bewitch
By Marty McGee
Juddmonte Farms has seen bigger days.
After all, the powerhouse stable was represented by two-time European Horse of
the Year Frankel as its most recent global
superstar just a couple of years ago.
Still, Thursday at Keeneland qualifies
as a big day for the pink and green, considering that Romantica, a Breeders’ Cup
runner-up, and Morpheus, a half-brother
to Frankel, both will be in action on a ninerace card that starts at 1:05 p.m. Eastern.
“I think we’re more hopeful than superconfident,” said Garrett O’Rourke, the
American racing manager for Juddmonte.
“We’ve already had some disappointment
this meet with Emollient [third at odds-on
last Friday in the Grade 3 Doubledogdare
Stakes] and a few others, so I’m hesitant to
get too cocky.”
Nonetheless, it stands to reason that
Romantica is strictly the one to beat in
the Grade 3, $150,000 Bewitch Stakes, a
1 1/2-mile turf race carded as the eighth on
the day, with a post time of 4:42. Switched
over to Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott after
Andre Fabre sent her out to a sharp runnerup finish behind Dank in the Breeders’
Cup Filly and Mare Turf last fall, the now5-year-old Galileo mare has flourished in
training toward her return.
“She’s doing very well and has worked
quite nicely since her arrival,” Mott said.
O’Rourke said Romantica “obviously has
the distance that should be to her liking.
On form, she looks like the class of the
race. With some luck, we can have a nice
year with her.”
Romantica is out of U.S. and European
champion Banks Hill, and her second dam
is Juddmonte’s elite producer Hasili. She
won the Group 1 Prix Jean Romanet and
a Group 3 stakes in France last year when
trained by Fabre.
With Joel Rosario riding, Romantica
will break from post 9 as the 2-1 morningline favorite in the three-turn Bewitch,
which drew 11 other fillies and mares and
shapes up as an outstanding race. Among
the other logical contenders are Left a
Message, Viva Rafaela, Aigue Marine, and
Inimitable Romanee.
The Bewitch is the sister race to the
Grade 2, $200,000 Elkhorn Stakes, which
closes out the 15-day spring meet Friday.
One race earlier Thursday, all eyes will
be on Morpheus as the 4-year-old colt
makes his U.S. debut when breaking from
5

Bewitch Stakes at Keeneland.
post 1 under Jose Lezcano in a $64,000,
third-level optional claimer (race 7, post
4:11) at 1 1/16 miles on Polytrack.
Morpheus, also new to Mott’s care after
being campaigned by the late Henry Cecil
and his widow, Lady Jane Cecil, has won
three of eight career starts. The son of
Oasis Dream will be getting first-time
Lasix when facing 11 other older horses off
13 workouts (11 at Payson Park and two at
Keeneland).
“We’re just crossing our fingers in the
hope he’ll adapt over here,” O’Rourke said.
“Obviously, he has some talent, and we’re
hoping he’ll find a niche for himself, something that’s ideal on these American tracks
and with firm ground.”
Morpheus is listed at 4-1 in a race that has
Charming Kitten, ninth in the Kentucky
Derby last year, as a 3-1 program choice.
A highly eventful Thursday card begins
with the third 2-year-old race of the meet
and the first restricted to fillies. Wesley
Ward will send out the uncoupled pair of
Beauty Sisters and Spanish Pipedream in
a field of nine.

DAN ILLMAN’S PEDIGREE HANDICAPPING

A closer look at Puntrooskie
PUNTROOSKIE
(Dk. b. or br. g., In Summation–Siren Cove,
by Montbrook)
Foal date, state: March 15, 2011, Florida
Trainer: Nicholas Gonzalez
Owner: Tucci Stables
Breeders: John David O’Farrell, J. Michael
O’Farrell, and Our Sugar Bear Stable
Last race: 1st, Woodstock Stakes, 6 furlongs,
Woodbine, April 20, Beyer: 98
For the second year in a row, Nicholas Gonzalez made a prescient claim at
Gulfstream for Tucci Stables. In 2013,
the owner-trainer combination haltered
Midnight Aria for $35,000 out of a runnerup performance in a nine-furlong turf race.
Six starts later, Midnight Aria placed his
name in the record books with a gate-towire triumph in the Queen’s Plate, the first
jewel of the Canadian Triple Crown.
Puntrooskie, a Florida-bred 3-yearold, won’t win this year’s Queen’s Plate,
but he looks like a very promising sprint
and middle-distance prospect. Taken for
$50,000 following a second-place finish in
a one-mile dirt race on Feb. 8, Puntrooskie
dominated the Woodstock Stakes traveling
six furlongs last Sunday at Woodbine.
Making
his
synthetic
debut,
Puntrooskie brushed the side of the gate
at the start and ended up trailing the
six-horse field while three wide on the
backstretch. Meanwhile, up front, 28-1
longshot Callmeoldfashion battled with
Go Greeley through fractions of 22.19 and
44.85 seconds. Puntrooskie, ridden by
Jesse Campbell, swept to the front with

a three-wide bid on the turn and was
geared down in the final sixteenth of a
mile. He scored by five lengths in 1:09.31
and received a career-best 98 Beyer Speed
Figure.
Puntrooskie didn’t beat up on a bunch
of tomato cans, either. Go Greeley was
named Canada’s champion 2-year-old of
2013 after reeling off three stakes victories; Only I Know won both prior starts by
a combined 14 1/4 lengths; Tuscan Getaway is multiple stakes-placed at Woodbine; favored Jose Sea View won a pair
of stakes last year and finished a solid
fifth behind Cairo Prince in the Grade 2
Nashua Stakes at Aqueduct; Callmeoldfashion overcame a closer’s bias to win
his lone prior outing on Polytrack.
Puntrooskie is from the first crop of In
Summation, a crack sprinter that won 12
of 29 races for over $1.2 million in career
earnings. In Summation prevailed at
distances ranging from 4 1/2 to seven
furlongs on dirt, turf, Polytrack and ProRide. He took his first five starts on dirt at
2 by a combined 25 1/4 lengths, received a
career-best 108 Beyer in nabbing the Grade
2 Palos Verdes Stakes over Pro-Ride, and
won the Grade 1 Bing Crosby Handicap
on Polytrack. In Summation set or broke
track records at six furlongs over the Santa
Anita Pro-Ride (1:06.67), 5 1/2 furlongs
on Pro-Ride (1:01.27), six furlongs on Del
Mar’s Polytrack (1:11.06) and 5 1/2 furlongs
on turf at Monmouth (1:01.85). In Summation stands for a $4,000 fee at J. Michael
O’Farrell’s Ocala Stud in Florida.
Puntrooskie’s dam, Siren Cove, by
Montbrook, was never off the board from
four starts. She won her debut on dirt at
five furlongs and finished third in the My
Dear Girl Florida Stallion Stakes at 1 1/16
miles. This is the female family of Mindy
Gayle, who succeeded in both the Grade 3
Florida Oaks at 1 1/16 miles and the Grade
2 Forward Gal Stakes at seven furlongs.
Bred by John David O’Farrell, J. Michael
O’Farrell, and Our Sugar Bear Stable,
Puntrooskie was foaled on March 15,
2011. Consigned by Ocala Stud, he sold for
$62,000 at the OBS June auction of 2-yearolds in training and horses of racing
age after breezing two furlongs in 21 3/5
seconds at the under-tack show.
Puntrooskie showed some promise in
his four unsuccessful starts for Our Sugar
Bear Stable and trainer David Braddy.
He finished third in his second start, his
3-year-old debut, in a six-furlong statebred
maiden special weight at Gulfstream on
Jan. 4, and received a 73 Beyer.
Puntrooskie raced on turf in his first try
for Gonzalez, a $75,000 maiden claimer at
Gulfstream going 1 1/16 miles. He finished
a decent fifth in a race that produced
four next-out winners. One of them was
Puntrooskie, who handled five others in
a statebred maiden special weight at 6 1/2
furlongs on dirt. Puntrooskie received
an 82 Beyer for that 6 3/4-length win and
was flattered when the runner-up, Souper
Lucky, returned to graduate by seven
lengths with a 79 Beyer.
That maiden race set Puntrooskie up
perfectly for the Woodstock, and he came
through with flying colors to become his
sire’s first stakes winner.
Puntrooskie looks strong on both dirt
and Polytrack, but may have some trouble in races beyond a mile. Keep an eye on
him throughout the spring and summer in
shorter-distance heats.
Lifetime PPs are available in packages of
10, 20, 50, 100 and 500 reports.

Broodmare of the Week: Champagne Royale
By Nicole Russo
Danza’s pedigree on his dam’s side
suggested that the colt was crying out for
a distance of ground – and when given the
opportunity, he stepped up to the plate in
a big way.
The Street Boss colt, who is trained by
Todd Pletcher for Eclipse Thoroughbred
Partners, romped by 4 3/4 lengths in the
Grade 1, 1 1/8-mile Arkansas Derby April
12 at Oaklawn Park. With that effort in
his first start around two turns, Danza
punched his ticket to the Kentucky Derby.
Danza is out of the 13-year-old French
Deputy mare Champagne Royale, who
herself was stakes-placed going 1 1/16
miles, and was already the dam of marathon stakes winner Majestic Harbor.
Danza hinted at his ability early on, finishing third, beaten less than a length, in the
Grade 2 Saratoga Special last summer. In
the first start of his 3-year-old season, the
colt was third in a seven-furlong allowance
March 1 at Gulfstream Park.
“We always had [his pedigree] in our
minds,” Pletcher said. “Trying to get to
that two-turn race, we felt the best way
to do that was to start back in a sevenfurlong allowance, and that would set him
up well for that race. I was still pleasantly
surprised at how well he handled the mile
and an eighth. He finished up real strongly,
he had his legs up underneath him at the
end, and he galloped out strongly. That’s all
encouraging stuff.”
Champagne Royale won four of her 11
starts racing exclusively at Hastings Park,
earning a modest $63,887. She finished
second in the Land Michener Matriarch
Handicap at 1 1/16 miles.
Following the conclusion of her racing
career, Champagne Royale went through
the ring at the 2006 Keeneland January
horses of all ages sale, selling for $29,000 to
Brandywine Farm and Liberation Farm.
Brandywine later bought the mare outright
at the 2012 Keeneland November breeding
stock sale, to dissolve a partnership.
Champagne Royale is the dam of four
winners from as many starters to date.
Less than a month before Danza started
in the Arkansas Derby, the colt’s 6-yearold half-brother Majestic Harbor served
up a hint to astute pedigree handicappers,
7
Barbara D. Livingston
Arkansas Derby winner and probable Kentucky Derby starter Danza is the second
graded stakes winner this year out of Champagne Royale.
capturing the Grade 3 Tokyo City Cup
Stakes going 1 1/2 miles at Santa Anita.
The Rockport Harbor horse also finished
second in the Grade 2 San Pasqual Stakes
at 1 1/16 miles earlier this year.
The mare has also produced Consider
Yourself, a winner at about 1 3/8 miles
in England; and Totally Tucker, a Larry
Jones-trained filly who scored a memorable debut win sprinting on the Kentucky
Oaks card at Churchill Downs in 2012 and
won at one mile and 70 yards last year at
Fair Grounds.
Eclipse
Thoroughbreds
purchased
Danza from Liberation and Brandywine
for $105,000 at the 2012 Keeneland September yearling sale. Pletcher noted that the
group’s familiarity with the colt’s sire may
have also played a role in the purchase.
Eclipse campaigned Street Boss’s Grade
1-winning son Capo Bastone.
“They did a great job with finding him,”
Pletcher said. “They’ve had success with
Street Boss… so I think maybe knowing
Capo Bastone was one of the reasons why
[Eclipse’s Aron Wellman] found Danza.”
Champagne Royale was bred to Preakness Stakes winner and Darby Dan stallion
Shackleford for 2014.
Bred in California by Budget Stable,
Champagne Royale is out of the winning
Tank’s Prospect mare All Tanked Up,
making her a half-sister to stakes winner
He’s Hammered.
