Welcome to “Our Town” North Webster
Where the businesses are unique and the locals are friendly
Hi!
I’m Sue, the North Webster-Tippecanoe Township Chamber of Commerce
President, inviting you to enjoy all the hidden treasures our town has to offer.
Celebrating the Indiana Bicentennial in 2016, North Webster will be the
scene of several events endorsed especially for the state’s 200th birthday.
Everyone is welcome to attend any or all of them. They include Dixie Day, July
30; North Webster Cemetery Walk, Sept. 11; the
statewide Bicentennial Torch Relay, which will pass
along SR 13 on the morning of Sept. 29; and the
Heart of the Harvest Fall Festival, Sept. 30. The
town will have at least two centennial bison on
display.
During the summer season please take advantage
of the many marinas where you may rent a boat to explore our beautiful lakes or
go fishing. Enjoy shopping at the antique mall, or at our unique refurbished furniture and accessory stores. We
have gift shops with nautical items, a large bait and tackle store, gun shop, and one of the largest hard to find shoe
size stores anywhere. We have so many more specialty shops to enjoy.
After shopping, try some of our great restaurants, or take an evening ride on our famous Dixie Sternwheeler
Tour Boat.
On behalf of the chamber, I extend a warm welcome to all our visitors, family, and friends who come to enjoy
our beautiful community. Whether you are staying a day, a weekend or a week, we have so much to offer for your
enjoyment such as the Memorial Day Parade and services, the Mermaid Festival, the fireworks on the lake, Dixie
Day, Heart of the Harvest Fall Festival, NWCC Community Auction, and A Visit With Santa. For more
information on any of the activities mentioned, check out our calendar of events or go to our website
www.northwebster.com or call our office at (574) 834-7076.
As chamber president for the past two terms, I want to say thank you to everyone who loves this town. Thank
you for your dedication to making a difference! I have been honored to serve as president and will continue to help
promote our town North Webster to be a great
place to live, work, and visit.
Thank you for your support and may each
and every one of you have a healthy and
prosperous year.
Sincerely,
Sue Ward

Spotlight on Local History
Artificial ice company leaves a legacy
By Terri Ritter
North Webster Community Public Library
Public Relations Coordinator
North Webster Artificial Ice Company was founded
during the Great Depression and provided employment for three generations of area residents.
The company was founded by Harold and Helen
Siders and her brother Lee Lorton. The Siders owned a
summer cottage in Rodgers Park on the east side of
Webster Lake.
As most cottagers did, they used an ice box to keep
their food cold. The ice was harvested from Webster
Lake during the winter and stored in insulated ice
houses around the lake until it was needed in the summer. Because it was frozen lake water, the ice contained
bits of weeds, moss and other debris.
However restaurants and taverns needed “clean” ice
to serve in drinks, and since they didn’t have on site ice
making machines like today, they had to buy “artificial” ice made commercially from clean water in refrigerated molds.
The Siders owned an ice company in Kendallville,
Indiana, and saw a need for one in North Webster. In
1937 they started the North Webster Artificial Ice
Company.
A giant one-cylinder gasoline engine ran 24 hours a
day to power the compressors and pump water from
wells. Even with a 12-foot tall muffler, the noisy engine
could be heard all over town.
After World War II, the Siders enlarged and modernized the plant with high capacity electrical service.
When the couple retired, they sold the business to the
Polar Ice Company which later became Home City Ice.
Harold died in 1981 and Helen passed away in
1989. The couple is buried in their home town of
Portland, Indiana.

Own the memories of
“Our Town: North Webster”
Armed with their own camcorders, citizens of North Webster created
a video scrapbook of the stories that make their
town special for WNIT Michiana PBS, South
Bend.
These videos, along with interviews of the volunteers, were combined to tell the stories that
reflect the emotional ties of the people who live,
love and are passionate about “Our Town: North
Webster.”
The video is a terrific snapshot of North
Webster and its lakes during the summer of
2015 and is a memorable keepsake.
To get a copy of the DVD about North
Webster and support WNIT, order online for
$50 at http://www.wnit.org/ourtown/e/northwebster.html or by calling
WNIT at (574) 675-9648 extension 330 or extension 311.

TTevents that continue to grow. It is a
fitting salute to the
Dixie, which has
been in continuous
summer service since
1929
churning the water
of Webster Lake. It
attracted more than
14,000 riders last
season alone.
One of the main
highlights of Dixie
Day is the extra
early afternoon tours
added to the schedule. Ride the Dixie
to relax, see
the sights around
the 640 acre lake
and learn its history.
Each cruise is professionally narrated.
Dixie Day features a juried art fair
for local and regional
artists and artisans,
antique tent fair,
craft, novelty and
food vendors, car
truck and motorcycle show and a 5K
fun run and walk to
name just some of
the events.
Visit the charming and friendly local
merchants and
restaurants while you are in town. Come back to
enjoy all that North Webster and the surrounding area have to offer anytime.
For more information about Dixie Day, visit
www.northwebster.com or look at the North
Webster-Tippecanoe Township Chamber of
Commerce Facebook page.
2016 COMMUNITY GUIDE
Family Fun for Everyone!
If you are looking for something fun to
do this summer, take a ride on the Dixie,
Indiana’s oldest stern wheel paddle boat! The
Dixie has been a part of Webster Lake history since 1929. Until 2006, the Dixie was
privately owned and operated by several
different captains. Today she is owned by
Dixie Sternwheeler, Inc. (DSI) a not-forprofit organization dedicated to repairing,
restoring, and preserving the Dixie.
Countless hours have been spent by local
volunteers and businesses in continuous renovation and restoration of the historic vessel.
The Dixie was named to the National
Register of Historic Places by the U.S.
Department of the Interior, National Park
Services.
Lifelong memories are still being made by
passengers as they continue the traditions of
celebrating weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, reunions and memorial services on the
Dixie.
Regular public cruises are scheduled from
Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day
You are invited
aboard the . . .
for only $7 per person. A special Fireworks
Cruise is scheduled on Saturday, July 2 during the 9:00 p.m. cruise. Special tickets will
be sold beginning at 9:00 a.m. on July 1
until sold out at the Lake View Pizza King
ticket window. The cost for that cruise is
$10.00. Tickets are limited.
This year marks the 87th birthday of the
Dixie. Special afternoon cruises will take
place 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Saturday, July
23.
On Saturday, July 30 the Dixie will again
offer special afternoon cruises while the
town celebrates Dixie Day!
Enjoy live music 9:00 p.m. every
Saturday evening during the Moonlight
Cruise with Captain Bob, the Singing
Skipper. The price is still just $7.

Pisgah Marsh A Nature Trail Available To All
By Martha Stoelting,
The Mail-Journal Staff Writer
and Photographer
Near North Webster is one of the
Indiana Department of Natural
Resources’ best kept secrets.It’s called
Pisgah Marsh Wildlife Diversity Site and
although the main entrance is off SR 5
in Whitley County, most of the 445
acres lie in Tippecanoe Township in
Kosciusko County. It is overseen by the
Tri-County DNR office, near Syracuse.
The most unique aspect of this scenic
spot is it is accessible by a boardwalk,
which is 1,500 feet long and 6 feet wide.
It was built in 2003. Made of arsenic
free treated wood, the boardwalk meanders over an unusual geological formation called an esker. It is a long, narrow
ridge of sand, gravel and boulders
deposited by streams flowing under the
glacier that covered this part of the
world. Clay pockets were formed and
hold the marsh and lake. The word “pisgah” is derived from the Bible and
means hill or ledge.
Free admission and parking make this
handicap accessible area available in all
kinds of weather except snow. Hours are
sunrise to sunset and there are restrooms
provided.
Visitors must stay on the boardwalk
at all times to protect the wildlife habi-
tat, which attracts more than 290 bird
species and many types of animals and
insects.
Winter is the time to have a clearer
view of the marsh than summer. Spring
and fall are said to be equally spectacular.
Take in this hidden gem next time
you’re in the area. Turn east on East 500
North, better known as Armstrong
Road. Follow its curves past the
Ponderosa subdivision and turn left at
the first road, East 450N. This goes to
SR 5. Turn south. The marsh is on the
east side of the road, not too far past the
Noble County line.
It would be fun to bike there from
Webster, but the bikes cannot be ridden
on the boardwalk.
For more information, call (574)
834-4461 or search online for Pisgah
Marsh IN DNR.

Library Serving the Past, Present, Future
The North Webster Community Public
Library joins in the Indiana Bicentennial
Celebration with special events planned to
commemorate 200 years of statehood.
The library is participating in Indiana’s
Bison-tennial Public Arts Project by sponsoring a 5 foot by 8 foot bison statue that
will be painted and decorated by a local
artist and put on display in anticipation of
the Bicentennial Torch Relay.
This commemorative torch will make its
way through all 92 Hoosier
counties, covering 2,300 miles,
over a five week period, and will
pass through North Webster on
Sept. 29.
In addition, the Youth
Services Department will hold
special bison crafts and games for
children that week to coincide
with the Torch Relay.
The adults will enjoy their
own bison activities that
include a tour of an area
bison farm complete with a picnic
meal featuring bison meat.
As a special honor, the Indiana
Bicentennial Commission has
endorsed the library’s 10th annual
North Webster Cemetery Walk on
Sept.11 as a Bicentennial Legacy
Project. Sponsored by the library’s
Local History and Genealogy
Center, the annual Cemetery Walk
is a living history event that celebrates local history and people from
the past who helped build the heritage of our community.
To qualify for endorsement, an event
must be historically relevant and create a
legacy for the future. By understanding the
past, the library hopes to give thought to
how the future is being shaped for coming
generations.
Take advantage of the many resources
available at the North Webster Community
Public Library. A North Webster library
card is free to residents of Tippecanoe
Township and, as part of the statewide
Evergreen Library System, the North
Webster card can be used at over 100
Evergreen libraries across the state.

flat to rolling upland fields and gradual to steep
slopes of oak-hickory woodlands, falling off to
depressions of wetlands. Tri-County includes 10
natural lakes with water depths of 75 feet. TriCounty provides wonderful opportunities to
relax and enjoy nature. Facilities include a dog
training area, shooting and archery ranges and

Pisgah Marsh Area and Boardwalk
Located approximately 9 miles north of
Larwill, west of State Road 5, this area was set
aside to preserve habitat resources for a variety of
plant and animal species. The Pisgah Marsh area
is home to over 290 bird species and provides
excellent wildlife viewing throughout the year.
The 445-acres is comprised of grassland, wetland, upland forest and lake habitat.
Opportunities include fishing and hunting in
the Durham Lake Area.
In an attempt to help preserve the sensitive
area, the Pisgah Marsh Boardwalk and Golden
Eagle Deck were constructed in 2003 to provide
access to the property. Hunting, fishing and collection of species is strictly prohibited in this
area. (574) 834-4461.

The Watershed Foundation
TWF protects and
improves
water quality
in the more
than 50 lakes
and streams
in the Upper Tippecanoe River watershed that spans from Crooked Lake to
Lake Tippecanoe. This unique area is
full of amazing water resources and rich
farmland.
The Foundation focuses on stopping
pollution at its source (on the land) before
it reaches our waters. An astounding seventy-five percent of the land in the watershed is agricultural, which is why TWF
concentrates on working with farmers to
implement solutions that are healthy for
their productions, and our lakes.
TWF also works to promote impactful
residential choices including using phosphorus-free lawn fertilizer, maintaining septic systems, not feeding waterfowl, and installing healthy shorelines.
The Foundation has completed over 95 permanent water-quality-improvement projects, established an agriculturally focused
Healthy Soils, Clean Water program and co-developed the internationally recognized Clear Choices, Clean Water
education campaign. To learn more please visit

Mermaid Festival just one of Lions Club projects
2016 will mark the 71st annual
Mermaid Festival for the North Webster
Lions Club. The theme is “Indiana
Bicentennial, Celebrating Indiana.”
To be held June 22-25, the Mermaid
Festival is the cornerstone of the events
and projects that the Lions Club participates in and supports throughout the year.
The club views the Mermaid Festival as a
place for the community to come and gather once a year to see friends and neighbors
that they may not have seen since the last
festival.
Without the community’s support of the
Mermaid Festival, it would not be easy for
the Lions Club to do
community service.
The Lions Club
has sponsored Cub
Scouts for 63 years,
sponsors a little
league team and
owns, operates and
maintains the Mermaid Festival Grounds.
Other community groups as well as the
Lions utilize the grounds each year.
However, the Lions Club is more than
the Mermaid Festival. It has projects and
activities throughout the year that either
raise money for or support local organizations and projects and Lions
International projects. Examples
are eyeglasses for the needy and
the Lions Leader Dog program
that provides leader dogs free of
charge to those that are blind.
Another event to put on the
calendar that the Lions Club
brought back to life in North
Webster in 2008 is the Amazing
Haunted House at the Mermaid
Festival Grounds.
The haunted maze will be open for three
weekends thanks to the help of North
Webster Boy Scout Troop 726. The dates
are Oct. 14, 15, 21, 22, 28, and 29. This is
fun for the whole family.
As a group of 26 members, the club can
always use more help with the various projects and fundraisers. To inquire about being
a Lions Club member, go to the website at
www.nwlionsclub.com, call (574) 8344316, or come to one of the meetings 7
p.m., the second and fourth Thursdays of
each month in the Tippecanoe Township
Building, 102 S. Morton St. Park and enter
on the west end of the building.
2016 Theme

Herbert Kuhn American Legion Post 253
“The Biggest
Little Post In
Indiana”
Located on the south side of North
Webster on SR 13, Herbert Kuhn American
Legion Post 253, bills itself as “The Biggest
Little Post in Indiana.”
The reason is that the post has a large
membership when compared to the number
of inhabitants in the town of North Webster.
Post 253 boasts a Legion membership of
1,134 members and has the third largest Legion
membership in the state of Indiana.
The post also claims the largest women’s
Auxiliary unit in the state and the largest Sons of
the American Legion detachment in the state,
each with over 800 members.
In total Legion family membership, Post 253
has the largest Legion organization membership
in the state.
Post 253 offers a wide variety of programs and
activities for both members and nonmembers.
Community involvement is important and the
post strives to support other community organizations including the local schools, the chamber
of commerce, the community center, youth baseball, the library and local scout troops.
The post supports local schools with numer-
46
ous donations and conducts the
American Legion flag education program and government program at the
schools.
Each year the post sponsors local
high school students at Hoosier Boys’
State and Hoosier Girls’ State.
Annually, the post provides scholarships to more than 20 local students
attending college or other post-high
school education.
Donations are made annually to
several community organizations.
Each November, the Legion hosts
aThanksgiving Day Dinner for the
community.
The post also collects food items for the
North Webster Food Pantry and for the community Christmas food delivery.
The Legion Honor Guard provides military
honors for approximately 35 veterans’ funerals
each year and conducts memorial services on
Veterans Day and Memorial Day at five area
cemeteries.
The post has three vans that are available to
transport veterans, who are not able to drive,
to medical appointments and to veterans’ hospitals in Fort Wayne, Marion and
Indianapolis.
The public is invited to enjoy lunch and
dinner in the Post’s restaurant
as well as several yearly events
held in the Post or at its outdoor facilities. Wii bowling
and bingo throughout the year
are open to the public.
Popular local bands entertain
on many Friday and Saturday
nights.
Individuals and organizations can rent the Legion’s banquet hall and outdoor pavilion
for special occasions for an
affordable price. Stop in to see
why North Webster American
Legion Post 253 is so popular.

The mission statement of the Lakeland

as all Kiwanis Clubs worldwide: “Kiwanis is
a global organization of volunteers dedicated to improving the world, one child and
one community at a time.”
The club’s 44 members work with and

communities.
Some of the programs supported by the
club include Teen Parent Succeeding, Riley
Children’s Hospital, North Webster
Elementary K Kids Club, Wawasee Middle
School Builder’s Club and Wawasee High
School Key Club.
Locally the club is proud to sponsor the
American flags on Main Street in North
Webster and to raise funds for scholarships
and other local needs through the famous
“Corn & Sausage Roast” held every August
at the North Webster Community Center.
Kiwanis also holds a variety of fundraisers throughout the year including pancake
breakfasts and fish fries to benefit various
programs.
On a national and worldwide scale,
Kiwanis supports “The Eliminate Project”
assisting the elimination of maternal tetanus
that affects millions of mothers and their
babies, primarily in underdeveloped
countries.
Individuals with a
desire to join Kiwanis or
those who would like to
hear more about the club
are invited to attend our
weekly meetings held on
Monday mornings at 6:30
