Trails
Trails are abundant in the area, including the Overmountain Victory Trail, the NC Mountains to Sea Trail, and the Yadkin
River Trail, to name a few, and Elkin is considered an official "Trail Town".
Weather:
The Yadkin Valley enjoys mild weather patterns and extremely clean air.
Both Elkin and Jonesville’s downtowns are situated along the Yadkin River, and offers a paddlers boat ramp and small camp site.
Dobson’s downtown is situated within sight of the Blue Ridge Mountains and surrounded by vineyards and farm land.
Vineyards
There are numerous vineyards in the Yadkin Valley area. The Yadkin Valley Wine Festival is held each May at the Elkin
Municipal Park, which is situated along Big Elkin Creek, which feeds into the Yadkin River.

• Cedarbrook County Club, 225 Country Club Drive, State Road, offers an Ellis Maples
designed course in the Elkin community. It is a semi-private club open for membership and

• High Meadows Golf and Country Club, 1288 Country Club Road, Roaring Gap, provides
a course designed by George Cobb in 1964. The 18-hole course offers players 5 sets of tees,
and a driving range, putting green, practice sand bunker

• Olde Beau Golf and Country Club, 729 Olde Beau Blvd.,

Fishing
• Lake Hampton at Yadkin Memorial Park, 1142 Crystal Lane, Yadkinville, offers fishing
opportunities from non-gas-powered boats and a pier seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 8
p.m. The 135-acre lake includes black crappie, bluegill, channel catfish, largemouth bass and
redear sunfish. It is handicap-accessible.
• Big Elkin Creek at Elkin Municipal Park, 399 N.C. 268 West, Elkin, offers stream-side
fishing with stocked channel catfish as well as sunfish.
• Yadkin River fishing can yield a number of fish species including bullhead, flathead catfish,
largemouth bass, redbreast sunfish, smallmouth bass and spott bass.
• Mitchell River fishing includes delayed harvest trout water. Species to be found include all
stocked brook trout, brown trout and rainbow trout.

State parks
• Stone Mountain State Park, 3042 Frank Parkway, Roaring Gap, is northwest of the Elkin
area and offers visitors a number of activities to pursue. There are 20 miles of designated trout
waters for those wanting to fish, more than 18 miles of hiking trails as well as opportunities
for horseback riding. Other activities include camping whether in a campground or backpack
site, picnicking, rock climbing and more. More information can be found at http://www.

• Pilot Mountain State Park, 1792 Pilot Knob Park Road, Pinnacle, overlooks U.S. 52 in the
eastern portion of Surry County. The park provides opportunities for those looking to rock
climb, hike, take a less strenuous walk,
horseback ride, camp and fish, which a
portion of the state park located on the
north and south banks of the Yadkin
River. A 6.5-mile corridor trail joins the
mountain and river sections of the park,
with parking areas at both locations. More

Local parks
• Elkin Municipal Park, 399 N.C. 268 West, Elkin, provides a place for those of all ages to
play and enjoy the outdoors. From a playground, to the Elkin Recreation Center’s pool and
facilities, the park serves as a place for walkers, hikers, runners, and a trailhead for the E&A
Rail Trail and Overmountain Victory Trail. The 25-acre park also is part of the Mountainto-Seas Trail. Picnic shelters, eight lighted tennis courts and a band shell also are available at
the park. The park also offers free wifi and is open daily. For more information, call 336-7946478.
• Lila Swaim Memorial Park, on Swaim Street, is Jonesville’s primary park facility offering
tennis courts, ball fields for baseball, softball and soccer, walking trails, basketball courts,
picnic shelters and a playground. The site is formerly
the historic Jonesville Speedway and became Lila
Swaim Memorial Park in 1975. More information

• Crater Park, sitting on the banks of the Yadkin
River, provides boating access to the river as well as
one ball field used for girls softball, T-ball and coach
pitch baseball. For more information, call 336-7946478.
• Chatham Park, on N.C. 268 a half mile east
of downtown Elkin, has two baseball fields
used for baseball and softball as well as a
number of soccer fields and a rentable picnic

• Yadkin Memorial Park, 1142 Crystal Lane,

outdoor volleyball court, horseshoe pit, basketball court and numerous rentable picnic
shelters. Fishing is allowed from the river banks as well. The park opens at 8 a.m. year-round
and closes at dark. It is closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. For more information,

• Dobson Square Park, 110 S. Crutchfield St., Dobson, located across the street from the
Dobson Public Library and the historic Surry County Courthouse, the park features a new
splash pad offering a number of water elements to keep kids cooled off, picnic shelters, an
amphitheater, playground and large grass area to play. It is also site of the farmers market
when it is in season.

• Fisher River flows mostly through Surry
County coming out of Grayson County,
Virginia, before emptying into the Yadkin
River near Boonville. It is hatchery-supported
for those looking for fishing opportunities.
• Mitchell River flows out of Alleghany
County and through Surry County dumping
into the Yadkin River just east of Elkin. It
boasts many fishing opportunities, especially
near Kapps Mill in the Mountain Park
community of State road, for those looking to
fish and fly fish.
• Yadkin River is one of the longest rivers in
North Carolina and forms the county border
between Yadkin and Surry counties. It is a
major water and power source for towns from
the mountains along its length into South
Carolina where it becomes the Great Pee
Dee River. Recreation on the river includes
fishing, tubing, kayaking and canoeing.

1987, is a blueway following 130 miles of the river and is a paddle trail that is part of the
North Carolina State Trails Program with launch points and camping spots along the banks.
Reservoirs along the river include W. Kerr Scott Reservoir in Wilkesboro.
Yadkin River accesses
• Ronda is an access point in Wilkes County, west of Elkin, and is 6.8 miles upriver from
the Crater Park access in Elkin. There is a paved parking lot and bathroom facility. It is
maintained by the town of Ronda and is just off N.C. 268 traveling toward Clingman.
• Crater Park in Elkin serves as another access point for the Yadkin River. There is a gravel
entrance and parking, as well as bathrooms. It is 10.7 miles upriver from the Burch Station
access east of Elkin. It is maintained by Elkin Parks and Recreation and sits just south of
Main Street and downtown Elkin.
• Burch Station access is where the Mitchell River flows into the Yadkin River east of Elkin,
just off N.C. 268 near the Perdue chicken feed plant. There is a gravel entrance and parking,
but no bathroom facilities. It is maintained by Surry County Parks and Recreation.
• Yadkin/Shore access is five miles west of the historic village of Rockford. It has a gravel
entrance with parking, but no bathroom. Camping is permitted and there is a water pump. It
is maintained by Yadkin County Recreation Department.
• Rockford access is a private access maintained by Yadkin River Adventures. There is a gravel
parking lot, and those wishing to access this point should contact Yadkin River Adventures,
104 Old Rockford Road, for permission at 336-374-5318.
• Shoals access is part of the Pilot Mountain State Park and is 11.8 miles east of Rockford
access. It includes a dirt and gravel road entrance with limited parking. It is 6.9 miles from
the next point at Donnaha.
• Donnaha access is the final Yadkin/Surry
access point to the Yadkin River as it heads
into Forsyth County and south. The Yadkin
County Recreation Department maintains the
mandatory portage point with a dirt and gravel
entrance road, parking and a bathroom facility.

Trails
• Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail, a 330-mile trail through five states —
Tennessee, North Carolina, Georgia, Virginia and South Carolina — with a trailhead in
downtown Elkin. The trail traces through the route used by patriot militia during the Kings
Mountain campaign of 1780, a turning point in the Revolutionary War. In Elkin, 3.75 miles
of walkable trail is available to follow the footsteps of our ancestors. For more information,

• E&A Rail Trail begins at the Elkin Municipal Park and travels northward toward Stone
Mountain State Park. The trail, still in development, already includes a new pedestrian foot
bridge of the Big Elkin Creek, with another bridge in the works. The trail, which follows the
rail bed of the historic Elkin & Alleghany railroad, is being development by the Elkin Valley
Trails Association. The E&A Rail Trail will connect with the Stone Mountain Trail, which is

• Mountains-to-Sea Trail in North Carolina covers 1,150 miles from the Great Smoky
Mountains to the Outer Banks and comes right through the Yadkin Valley with a portion of
the trail being Main Street through historic downtown Elkin. Segment 6 of the trail is from
Devil’s Garden Overlook to Pilot Mountain State Park, and includes Stone Mountain State

• Jonesville Greenway is a trail from Bluff Street to about one mile east of I-77. Eventually the
plan is to extend the trail to a 32-mile stretch ending in historic Rockford.

• Carolina Skydiving, 3133 Swan Creek Road, Jonesville, allows those interested in flying
high the opportunity to jump tandem with an experienced instructor and solo through the
advanced freefall progression school. The facility is a United States Parchute Association

• Elkin Municipal Airport, 1598 CC Camp Road, is a public airport operated by Yadkin
Valley Aviation. It features a 4,000-foot runway, with tiedowns and hangars available for a
fee. Opportunities are available for helicopter and plane piloting school and flights in the

• Mount Airy-Surry County Airport, 146 Howard Woltz Jr. Way, Mount Airy, is a public
airport operated by Ra-tech Aviation. It features a 4,300-foot runway, with development

Ziplining
• Big Woods Zipline, 2280 Sanders Ridge Road, Boonville, is a mile-long, 12-cable course at
the Sanders Ridge Winery, Vineyard and Restaurant. It includes 12 lines, 14 platforms and a

Reenactments
• Rockford General Store each March hosts the Civil War Battle and Living History Weekend
in history village of Rockford featuring the 7th North Carolina Cavalry along with the 38th
NC, 21st NC, 12th NC, 6th NC and the 24th VA reenactors. Battles are scheduled Saturday
and Sunday on the event weekend as well as an outdoor church service in the Rockford
Amphitheater on Sunday. The event is free to the public. For more information, visit www.

• Overmountain Victory Trail holds its annual reenactment each Fall at the Elkin Municipal
Park on the same day the battle was fought . Each fall the Overmountain Victory Trail
Association hosts a field day at Elkin Municipal Park
for area students to learn about the trail and its regional
history as it relates to the Revolutionary War. The
reenactment features booths and themes associated with
frontier life/culture, the militia and the war, many with
hands-on participation by the students.

Cruise-ins
• Elkin Cruise! in historic downtown Elkin is held the fourth Saturday of each month from
May through September. Cruisers can enjoy classic and modern cars, food and music from 4
to 9 p.m.
• Dobson Cruise-In held held the second Saturday of each month March through September
beginning at 2 p.m. in the square around the historic Surry County Courthouse. There is
food, music, door prizes, 50/50 raffle and more.
• Pilot Mountain is host to the Hot Nights Hot Cars Cruise-In the first Saturday of each
month May through October, with thousands of cars, live beach music bands, food, wine
