CHA P T NO 1 NEW S 2013 EDIT ION V OLUME 1V – A P RIL P AGE 7 Flags for Heroes Part 2 Ride Flags for Heroes part 2 5/25-5/27/2013 Those riding part 2 will ride with the Flags For Heroes ride leaving Indy early 5/25/2013 from 911 Memorial in downtown Indy to Louisville, Ky. After the ceremony, and this too is a moving ceremony, there Part 2 will depart for the Flight 93 National memorial in Pennsylvania. Ask anyone who rode last year, the time spent placing the flags at the memorial, and the reaction by the memorial staff and visitors, made the heat and long hours in the saddle well worth the effort. I have visited this memorial since 2002 3 times, only the last trip last year was it really a memorial. The Saturday ride, including the part from Indy is all Interstate, and we will cover almost 560 miles, so yes it is an Iron Butt Ride. I take lots of breaks for stretching and eating, and last year we arrived at the motel around 7:30PM if I remember correctly. We left early the next morning and arrived at the memorial around 9:30am. Placed our flags on the individual plaques, took pictures, had many pictures of us taken, had our moment of silence and departed for home, another 500 mile plus trip, in 105 degree heat. But even the heat did not dampen the mood or the feeling we all took away from that day. Memorial Day is a day for remembering, saying thanks to all those who have given their lives protecting us from our enemies, criminals, fire, earthquakes, floods, hurricanes and all forms of havoc. Since 911 that is what I do on this weekend. I didn't for many years before that, I too went fishing, swimming and camping, and yes riding with only my self and those around me on my mind. 911 awakened my patriotism and I will never allow it to fade again. This year I am taking the whole 3 day weekend to ride and say thank in my way all those CHA P T NO 1 NEW S 2013 EDIT ION V OLUME 1V – A P RIL P AGE Flags for Heroes Part 2 Ride 8 (continued) that have given their lives and all those still willing to give every hour of every day, and also to make the time more enjoyable and avoiding Interstates on way home as much as possible. Only a few brief miles will be Interstate on the way home, it will all be back roads and state highways in PA, WV, Oh and Indiana I invite anyone interested to contact me at [email protected], 317-388-9239 or on HOG Facebook page. All Hotel info and directions are posted there. The ride is also public at HOG Ride Planner, if you want to look at it email me and I will forward. There may be a few fellow riders from Louisville joining us this year also. I promise only that you will not be sorry for spending this weekend being a patriot, mother nature controls the weather, and yes nyou will probably shed a few tears and have that mysterious knot in your throat at least a couple of times and when others come up to you and say thank you, and take your picture, your inner pride will ever feel more a part of you. How about that ‘Break Out’ Ride! A Big Thank You to Nick Meyers for all his hard work that went into making our ‘Ride’ so memorable. We had 57 bikes with a total of 78 people. So…I’ve got a lot to scribe here for you all, because I will not be in attendance for May’s HOG meeting. My daughter will be graduating from college that morning. First off, I would like to call your attention to the ‘Ride Passport’. There is a typo for the ‘Covered Bridge’ Ride. The passport states that it is to occur on Sat. May 7th; obviously it is scheduled to follow the HOG Chapter meeting on Sat. May 4th. will travel through the battleground of Tippecanoe, ride through a couple of covered bridges, as well as make a stop at an old Mill from 1870. The ride travels up the towpath of the Wabash, then back down along the Tippecanoe. Speaking of the ‘Covered Bridge’ Ride, I want to give you further details about this great ride Ted Rossell has planned for you. It seems like if you’re from the Indy area, and someone mentions ‘covered bridges’…everyone immediately thinks West side of the state/Rockville area. Ted’s ride takes you on a tour of the ‘Covered Bridges of Rush County’, which presides on the East side of our state near Rushville, Indiana. The battle of Tippecanoe was fought on November 7, 1811 between United States forces led by Indiana Territory Governor William Harrison and Native American warriors led by the famous Shawnee leader Tecumseh. The war was considered to be a part of ‘the War of 1812’. The two covered bridges we’ll ride through include the Lancaster Covered Bridge, built in 1872, and the Adams Mill Bridge, also built in 1872. Again, feel free to google for more information. There will be five covered bridges on this tour. The same family built all five bridges beginning in the 1800’s. The Kennedy family of bridge builders lived, died and are buried in Rush County. Their descendants still live in Rush County. Ted will be taking us by their original homestead. Hope the information helps bring some more meaning the next two Chapter meeting rides. I am just so excited about this year! We’re off to a great start with record attendance for the Group Orientation Ride, and the Break Out Ride. Please take a look at our selection of ‘Over Night Rides’, they will make for a great mini-vacation for you all with all the details taken care of. After you decide which trips you’re interested in, mark them on your calendar and be sure to sign up with us. Signing up early helps the ride planner secure hotel rooms for the group at a group rate. The Kennedy family constructed at least 58 covered bridges, only 13 of which are still standing. Rush County at one time had 19 Kennedy bridges, six of which are still standing. Those six include the Forsythe Bridge, the Mud Creek Bridge Barn, the Offutt’s Ford Bridge, the Smith Bridge and Ted will be concluding the ride at the Moscow Bridge. Feel free to google this information to learn more about what you will be seeing. Here’s a cool link for those of you who are interested: http://www.in.gov/history/files/coveredbridges.pdf Keeping with the common thread of covered bridges, following the June Chapter meeting, we will be headed Northwest of Indy towards Monticello.
