oving Forward! Even the cold,
unpredictable winter weather has not
been able to keep the Oak Park family from
continuing to grow to new heights, while still
celebrating our roots. The students in our 50th
graduating class continue to achieve at high
levels and are excited as they see May 13th,
graduation day inching closer on the calendar.
Over the last several months, we have moved
through another great season, of accomplishments. Our student athletes achieved individual
and team goals, and celebrating student success
is always exciting. We continue to add names
to our Missouri Bright Flight Scholarship
banner. Our very own Oak Street Singers gave
a remarkable performance at the state music
conference. Some of our highest-achieving
students earned the Bright Flight Scholarship,
while other scholars were awarded the National
Merit Finalist status.Our PTSA/Booster Club
hosted a Silent Auction and Chili Supper that
was so successful they ran out of chili! Our
school was also selected to design a piano that
would encourage students to engage in the arts,
which is a testament to both Oak Park’s value
of the arts, and our students’ talent. Our staff
began working alongside parents, students,
and community members to begin the strategic
planning process, which we are extremely
excited about.
When students engage in the ACT exam and
score a 31 or higher, they receive this scholarship that earns up to
$10,000 toward their
college careers! It is
exciting to see students
achieve at such a high
level, and it gives our
Juniors something to aim
for as they prepare for the
first ever state-wide ACT
exam on April 28. If you
are a parent of a junior,
please be aware this free
exam can be used for
college admissions and
scholarships. This is a
great opportunity for all
of our juniors and we
anticipate great success
from them as the test
approaches.
Our Fall and Winter sports celebrated many
successes this year. Our Oak Park Wrestling
program continued the tradition of excellence
when sophomore Hunter Shelton won the State
Championship title for 152 lbs. in triple
overtime. We also had many student-athletes
recognized as All-Conference and All-District
performers based on their achievements,
Oak Park
including teams and individuals recognized at
the state level. Our Fine Arts programs are celebrating several students being named to AllDistrict Band and Orchestra, we look forward
to seeing these students compete at the state
level. In addition, we just learned that Keys 4/4
Kids chose Mr. Anderson and our Visual Arts
students to design a piano that would encourage the development of fine arts skills in future

students. We are pleased to have the piano on
display during our Art Show on March 31st and
hope many of our Oak Park family will be able
to come and see our students’ amazing work.
At the beginning of February we embarked on
a strategic planning process where our goal
was to identify where we are as a school and
dream of where we want to be in three years.
The 20+ member group was comprised of students, staff, parents, and community members
who collaborated to develop a new Mission
Statement, Strategic Objectives, and Tactics
in order for us to close the gap between where
we are and where we want to be. There are
now Action Teams working to create the steps
necessary for us to reach the goals of each
tactic. One of the key focuses of this work was
the importance of building, maintaining, and
extending the Oak Park Family. We will continue to connect with our alumni and build on
the success of the previous 49 graduating classes, while reaching out to our feeder schools to
inspire the next generation of Future Oakies.
As Spring arrives comes, with the excitement
of a new athletic season, high stakes testing,
and Commencement, we look forward to seeing our students continue to excel in various
ways. I would like to extend an invitation to all
Oak Park alumni to join us on May 13th at
Municipal Auditorium at 7:00 PM, as we
celebrate the students of the 50th graduating
class. It is great to be part of the Oak Park
Family!!

INTERVENTION & TUTORING
Here at Oak Park, it is our goal for all students
to be successful and graduate on time. We
offer tutoring sessions on Tuesday and
Wednesday afternoons from 2:30-4:30.
Students can get support from teachers and
complete assignments at this time.
Students can also recover up to 35 hours per
semester towards their Academic Attendance
by attending these tutoring sessions on Tuesday
and Wednesday.
This year we have built time into the day to
help students as well. Academic Resource
takes place on Mondays and Fridays for 40
minutes right before our lunches begin. This is
a time for students to get help from their
teachers during the school day.
We encourage you to talk to your students
about doing well in school each day. Call us
or stop by if you have questions concerning
your student. If you would like access to their
grades, use the following link to create a parent

PIANOS ON PARADE
Next Wednesday, Keys44Kids.org will deliver a piano to the Oak Park Art Department. Pianos on Parade (POP) pairs local artists with youth and has them artistically
transform pianos together. Our kids and community will design and paint this piano,
which will then be exhibited and then placed in the local community for all to play and
enjoy. Some of these pianos remain in their respective locations for the duration of the
event and play host to both spontaneous and planned events and concerts. Other pianos
go on tour and pop up at various outdoor fairs,
festivals and sporting events throughout the summer.

LIBRARY MEDIA CENTER
Students were greeted with a warm “welcome
back” in January as they headed to classes.
The LMC provided hot chocolate and treats as
a special recognition of their return to school.
We served over 800 cups of hot chocolate! It
was a very busy day.
January also saw a new display case unveiled,
entitled “Imagine.” Author, Dianne Maroney,
and photographer, Mario Masitti, have created
a beautiful masterpiece with their book, The
Imagine Project: Stories of Courage, Hope and
Love. The book celebrates life and the
remarkable individuals we encounter on our
journey who, when confronted with life’s
unexpected challenges, become inspirations to
each of us. We hope the display case will cause
you to stop and think about what lies within
each of us as we strive to be our very best.
February has Valentine’s Day, but it was also
a time to celebrate Black History. We created
a display of books, pictures, and a timeline
representing the importance of Black History
and its impact on all of us. The materials used
in the display are available for checkout from
the LMC.

had an amazing time. Students read one-toone, in small groups, and in large groups. They
colored, pasted, and cut out shapes. There was
one marriage proposal, one love note written,
and one date request from a kindergarten girl.
Our students represented themselves and OP
exceedingly well. We are so proud of them!
We’ve been invited back…plan on joining the
fun next year.
March 6, 2015, was the date for the Gateway
voting and the pizza party. This was the fifth
annual Gateway Voting Party held at OP. The
Gateway Award is given annually to recognize
outstanding literature for high school students.
It is a student choice award. Students who
have read a minimum of three Gateway
nominees throughout the school year are
eligible to vote for their favorite title. This
year we have four students who have read all
fifteen nominees and they will receive a gift
card to Barnes and Noble to recognize their
efforts. The Gateway list of nominees for 20152016 was released on March 6, 2015, at the
pizza party.
OP LMC will be participating in March
Madness, just like everyone else in the nation,
but ours will be books, not basketball. A YA
bracket of our top 32 checkouts for the year has
been created. Students will vote on their
favorite book within each pairing at www.
northmenslmc.weebly.com. Which one will
win?
is “Unlimited Possibilities @ Your Library.”
May brings the end of the school year with
our End-of-the-Year Book Swap being held on
May 5. Start collecting your gently used books
to bring in and share with others. This event
should provide some great summer reading
material.
The Mid-Continent Summer Reading Program
has chosen “Unmasked” as its theme for young
adult readers. We will have a “Look Beyond
the Cover” contest to promote summer reading.
So be watching The Axe in May for announcements concerning this fun contest.
The past two months have been very busy in
the LMC with 4503 students using the space,
2551 students with passes, 125 classes, and 105
meetings. We are appreciative of the
support from students and staff. As you can
see, we have had fun as we continue to
encourage students to read, read and read some
more!
One last note, Mrs. Angie Wiegers has
accepted the full-time Library Media Specialist
position at Oak Park beginning the 2015-2016
school year. It has been my pleasure and
privilege to work with Angie this year as she
has traveled between Staley and Oak Park.
Angie is creative, innovative, and a lot of fun
to work with. Please welcome Mrs. Wiegers as
she makes Oak Park her new home.
April 12-18 is National Library Week,
celebrating the importance of libraries in our
schools and communities. The theme this year
March 2 was “Read Across America,”
celebrating Dr. Seuss, so Mrs. Wiegers decided
this year we needed to celebrate in a big way,
which led us to Meadowbrook. We spent the
month of February recruiting, begging, asking,
seeking, cajoling, etc., students to join the fun
and go with us to an elementary school and
read to kids. Meadowbrook was contacted and
teachers from kindergarten to second grade
began requesting high schoolers to visit their
classrooms to read and participate in literacy
activities with their students. We left OP at
9:15 on March 2 to trek to Meadowbrook. All

ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT
As the semester is winding down, it is as
important as ever to encourage students to
complete assignments and study for their
tests.
To stay on track to graduate, we need
students to pass all classes in which they are
enrolled. In addition to having a staff that
is committed to help students be successful,
we also offer tutoring after school on Tuesdays and Wednesdays as well as building
time into our day for intervention. If you
have any questions about what your student
needs to do to be successful, please do not
hesitate to contact their teacher, counselor,
or an administrator.
Oak Park had well over 90% of our seniors
graduate last year and we want to make that
percentage even higher moving forward.
Thank you for encouraging your students to
stay on top of their grades.
