Choosing the right
compressor
Three-phase compressors are more efficient producers of compressed
air than single-phase equivalent units, so where a three-phase supply
is available the best option is the three-phase compressor.
Single-phase compressors up to 2.5 hp can operate from a 240V 13
Amp power supply, with the exception of the new 3 hp Low Current
models. 3.0 hp and above must operate from a 240V 30 Amp supply.
Wherever possible choose a larger compressor than you require at
present to allow for expansion.
Compressors with cast iron cylinders running slow, offer a much
extended service life.
1) Bodyshop - using the air equipment consumption guide, add all
the equipment consumptions together and divide by two, the resulting
figure is the minimum free air you require.
2) Workshop - using the air equipment consumption guide, add all
the equipment consumptions together and divide by three, the resulting
figure is the minimum free air you require.
Note: For calculation purposes always use free air delivered figures.

TECHNICAL JARGON
There are a number of terms used in the compressed air industry, here are a few of the most used and a brief
explanation of what they mean.
Displacement (Volume)
This term is used to decide the theoretical
volume of a compressor.
Pressure
Pressure is important because to have too low
a pressure would cause the equipment not to
work correctly, too high a pressure would at best
rapidly wear out the equipment, at worst it could
make the equipment lethal.
Free Air Delivered
This measurement is the volume of air taken in
to a compressor and therefore describes more
accurately the volume of air available for use.
Expressed as CFM/FAD at a given pressure.
Two Stage Compressors
First Stage: Air is compressed to approximately
30 psi. g, cooled then compressed to final pressure
in the second stage.
Note: Two stage provides more air for less energy.
Cost of Air Leaks
Hissing Sid is at work in most companies.
Hissing Sid is a length of air hose which
has become the family ‘air’ loom, it must be,
because this hose is costing its owner a small
fortune and yet to suggest replacement would
be a cardinal sin.
Remember: Displacement is the theory and
CFM/FAD is the actual volume available.

premises in order to include a range of new

Automotive Super Hub in Glasgow, the GSR
team purchased the Hofmann 3D GEOLITE
alignment system, 4 post wheel alignment lift and
Fusion tyre equipment from their Equipment
Specialist Niall Farmer, of Unipart Automotive.
A young Mr Farmer looking to step out of the
shadows and follow in his father’s footsteps!
With only 12 days until the launch and public
open event of their new premises Niall worked
on a tight schedule to order and install the
equipment on time. All 5 staff members
received training from Stuart Levitt at
Hofmann and were up and running to give live
demonstrations to over 300 visitors at their
open event.

The SF 8909 is a broad application electromechanical 2 post lift. It is suitable for lifting
most passenger cars, car derived vans and many
light commercial vehicles up to a gross weight
of 3000kg. The SF 8909 has a heavy duty column
design fabricated from high grade steel and
powerful 4kw motor synchronised with the slave
column via a mechanical chain drive. The lifts load
and safety nuts are manufactured from resilient
Nylatron and work in conjunction with the
precision engineered cold rolled screw.
Minimum floor requirements for installation are a
level 150mm thickness of C25 concrete. The floor
must be flat and levelled with a 10mm tolerance.

The range of Mobile Fuel Retrievers is designed to facilitate the draining of vehicle fuel tanks in accordance with the Health & Safety
at Work Act as laid down by the factory inspectorate for the safe transfer of fuel.
These units allow one person to empty vehicle fuel tanks, (or other types of container), of all their contents without the fuel ever
being exposed to the atmosphere. Leaded or unleaded petrol, and diesel, can be removed and replaced quickly, easily - and above all,
safely. All models consist of a high output reversible rotary pump with a 2.5 metre suction/delivery hose mounted on a robust, highly
manoeuvrable steel tank with wheels and castors.
