Cape Cod

CAPE COD’S timeless popularity is likely due to the draw of each town’s unique character quilted together to
create this special peninsula. The 15 towns of “The Cape”, some of which are also home to multiple small villages,
appeal to residents and visitors with varied interests. Towns are grouped into four regions, each with its own
personality: Upper Cape, Mid-Cape, Lower Cape and Outer Cape. The Upper Cape includes four towns as different
as the seashells found on their shores - Falmouth, Bourne, Sandwich and Mashpee. The towns of Barnstable,
Yarmouth and Dennis are considered Mid-Cape, while Brewster, Harwich and Chatham comprise the Lower Cape.
The Outer Cape towns are Orleans, Eastham, Wellfleet, Truro and Provincetown. The entire Cape falls within
Barnstable County.”
UPPER CAPE
At the Cape’s threshold, providing
access via the Bourne, Sagamore
and railroad bridges, lies the town of
Bourne. With its many harbors, coves
and inlets, this town is perfect for
beaching, swimming, fishing and
boating. Its “hub” location, offers easy
access to Martha’s Vineyard, Boston,
Providence and Newport, making
Bourne one of the Cape’s most
convenient destinations. The fluted
scallop shell and its succulent bounty
are celebrated annually in September
at the Bourne Scallop Festival.
Falmouth is probably best known
for its annual road race. Every
August, runners from around the
globe traverse seven scenic miles of
pavement along Nantucket Sound
between Woods Hole and Falmouth
Heights. Falmouth is also home to
Nobska Point Light, Shining Sea
Bikeway, Spohr Gardens and the
Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute.
Considered a gateway to Martha’s
Vineyard, the Steamship Authority
offers ferry service to the island from
Woods Hole. (Service to Nantucket is
also offered from Hyannis in the MidCape.)
Founded in 1637, Sandwich is one
of our country’s oldest towns. Catch a
glimpse of Cape Cod’s past while
meandering along the historic streets
of Sandwich. Visit its historical
museums, pedal along the Cape Cod
Canal Bicycle Path or stroll down the
Sandwich Boardwalk to enjoy views
of Cape Cod Bay. In late spring,
Heritage Museums & Gardens
presents a spectacular display of
Dexter Rhododendrons.
Mashpee boasts miles of sandy,
ocean beaches and four of the
largest freshwater ponds on Cape
Cod. In 1620, the Pilgrims were
greeted by the native Mashpee
Wampanoag Tribe, which finally
gained federal recognition in 2010. If
you visit in early July, be sure to
attend the annual Wampanoag Pow
Wow, where you can witness
authentic tribal drumming and
dancing.
MID-CAPE
The Mid-Cape, which includes the
towns of Barnstable, Yarmouth and
Dennis, is a dichotomy between
history and commerce. To the north is
Route 6A, the largest contiguous
historic district in the United States.
Also called the Old King’s Highway,
after England’s King George III, this
rambling road is lined with ancient
trees, historic inns and taverns,
churches and sea captain’s homes.
Barnstable, the largest and most
populous town on Cape Cod,
includes seven villages: Barnstable
proper, Centerville, Cotuit, Hyannis,
Marstons Mills, Osterville and West
Barnstable. Home to the Cape Cod
Mall, Hyannis’ central location is also
the main hub for transportation via
airplanes, trains and busses providing
visitors easy access to locations both
on and off Cape.
Yarmouth’s villages are
Yarmouthport, South Yarmouth and
West Yarmouth. Located to the south
along Rte. 28, South Yarmouth and
West Yarmouth attract families to
seaside resorts along the warm water
beaches of Nantucket Sound. A vast
array of activities, from art exhibits at
the new Cultural Center of Cape Cod
to mini-golf and go carts, attract “kids”
of all ages. To the north, along Route
6A, historic Yarmouthport appeals to
visitors in search of a most peaceful
vacation. Many historic homes have
been converted to bed-and-breakfast
inns, surrounded by nature trails and
sites such as the Captain Bangs
House Museum, Taylor-Bray Farm
and the Edward Gorey House.
The town of Dennis includes the
villages of East Dennis, West Dennis,
Dennis proper and South Dennis.

Cod can be found on both sides of town.
Chapin, Mayflower and Corporation
beaches stretch along Cape Cod Bay to
the north, while the Sea Street and West
Dennis beaches sit along Nantucket
Sound to the south. Dennis is also home
to Scargo Tower, the Josiah Dennis
Manse historic home, Cape Cod Museum
of Art and the Cape Playhouse, the
nation’s oldest professional summer
theatre.
Past and present run parallel routes
through the Mid-Cape, offering visitors the
best of both worlds. Historic as well as
scenic, Route 6A features the 17th-, 18thand 19th-century homes quietly
interspersed with antique shops, art
galleries and restaurants. On the south,
Route 28 is bustling with activity and
commerce. The choice of either quiet
relaxation or lively fun makes the MidCape area a popular destination.
LOWER CAPE
If you look at the Cape as a flexed arm,
the towns around the elbow—Brewster,
Harwich and Chatham—make up the
Lower Cape.
With gorgeous ocean vistas, a muchphotographed lighthouse, and dozens of
shops along the charming old Main
Street, Chatham’s walking village attracts
thousands of visitors each year. Popular
summer events include the Friday night
band concerts in the park, the VFW
clambakes and the Chatham A’s Cape
Cod Baseball League games. The movie
“Chatham” was filmed here in 2010, with
Burt Reynolds starring as a retired sea
captain.
Once an enclave for sea captains,
Brewster offers a variety of quaint inns,
restaurants and beaches. Antique shops
and art galleries line the Old King’s
Highway (historic Route 6A) and the town
of Brewster is also home to the Cape Cod
Museum of Natural History.
A cluster of seven villages, Harwich
offers beautiful beaches on Nantucket
Sound, as well as a number of
picturesque ponds. Celebrated for its
agricultural impact, Harwich is well known
for its cranberry festival held annually in
each fall. It is also home to the Cedar
Spring Herb Farm and the Cape Cod
Lavender Farm.
OUTER CAPE
Beginning with the town of Orleans just
past Cape’s “elbow”, is the Outer Cape,
which also includes Eastham, Wellfleet,
Truro and Provincetown.
From the Cape Cod National Seashore
to the artists’ colony of Provincetown, the
Outer Cape offers a diverse mix of
activities and scenery for singles,
couples, families and groups. Orleans,
Eastham, Wellfleet, Truro and
Provincetown all boast miles of biking and
hiking trails, notable restaurants, and
historic sites. Did you know that Truro,
featured numerous times in Omni
magazine, is allegedly a hotspot for UFO
sightings?
The romantic, wild Outer Cape is far
removed from the other more suburban
parts of the Cape, with vast stretches of
unspoiled beaches. Enjoy the 1,000-acre
Massachusetts Audubon Society’s
Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary, go on a
whale watch, or retrace Henry David
Thoreau’s footsteps if you choose.
Orleans offers a nice balance of town and
country while Eastham, Truro and
Wellfleet are quite sedate and rural and
Provincetown is lively and unique. Provincetown is the best-known gay
summer resort on the East Coast. With its
whaling and fishing history, fanciful inns
and bustling Commercial Street,
Provincetown enchants all who visit. Its
prominent past and present residents
include artists, poet laureates,
international journalists and playwrights.
THE ISLANDS
Martha's Vineyard is a wonderful mix of
architectural styles and varied
landscapes. Up-Island are country stores,
remote galleries, sheep farms, and the
wind-buffeted, gray-shingled homes of
the rural towns of West Tisbury, Chilmark,
Menemsha and Gay Head (Aquinnah).
The larger and more active towns, with
their fine restaurants, galleries and
shops, are located down island in
Edgartown, Oak Bluffs and Vineyard
Haven.
The island owes its name to Captain
Bartholomew Gosnold who, in 1602,
christened the island “Martha’s” in honor
of his infant daughter and “Vineyard” for
the abundance of wild grapes he found.
(It is ironic that an island named
“vineyard” would later become a
predominantly “dry” vacation retreat, with
the exception of Oak Bluffs and
Edgartown.) One of several islands in
Duke’s County, Martha’s Vineyard is the
largest (about 120 square miles) and
most accessible.
Once a major seaport until the
construction of the Cape Cod Canal
rerouted shipping traffic, it is now the
destination of those seeking solitude and
society. In spite of it all, Martha’s
Vineyard maintains its rural ambiance
and continuity with the past.
Vineyard Haven, which makes up the
majority of Tisbury, is the transportation
hub and commercial center of the island.
It is from here that ferries shuttle visitors
to and from Woods Hole. Packed with
shops, bookstores and restaurants,
Vineyard Haven is the chief year-round
town and summer colony.
Nantucket Island is an otherworldly
landscape of ponds, moors, dwarf trees
and thickets where birds and animals find
shelter, and cranberry bogs that form a
magic carpet of color in autumn.
The mood on Nantucket is very
different from the hustle and bustle of the
mainland. Here, 30 miles out to sea,
peace pervades the atmosphere, and the
architecture retains its dignity. Striking
blue hydrangeas accent the weatheredshingle cottages, and trellises overgrown
with roses conceal passageways to lovely
gardens. Century-old elms shade
cobblestoned Main Street, remarkably

Nantucket’s long-gone whaling fleet
was responsible for lighting most of the
world’s oil lamps. As early as the late
1600s, islanders knew of the utility of the
huge mammals, and it only took a brief
time before the islanders discovered the
unlimited uses of their various anatomical
parts. By the early 19th century, the
island had reached the height of its
prosperity and renown as the center of
the world’s whaling fishery. All islanders
shared in the enormous profits that
industry provided, from a harbor front
teeming with whaling-related commerce
to a town replete with rooming and
boarding houses.
