in musea MUSEUM FotoWare secures lasting values The museum’s task is to care for its collections in the best possible way, so that they will remain available in the future. Objects and exhibits must also be made available both for internal use and to the public. Traditionally, a museum’s collections have only been made available through exhibitions, in which only a fraction of the artifacts are put on display. The Internet, however, has paved the way for a whole new way of exhibiting a museum’s collections. It lets museums reach a much larger audience and enables them to exhibit their entire collections if need be. FotoWare helps museums and other organizations that need to safeguard digitized collections for the future to organize and to share this information effectively. There is time and money to be saved by automating the important process of archiving. A FotoWare system can be configured to automate processes for adding metadata, processing images and other media files and for sharing them with the public and other users. Svalbard Museum Norway http://bildearkiv.svalbardmuseum.no/fotoweb/ FotoWare’s archiving solutions have helped more than a hundred museums all over the world organize and publish images of a large number of greatly diverse collections. Being able to document entire collections and exhibitions, and to keep track of any changes that have been made is important for museums. A FotoWare system safeguards that information and makes it easy to retrieve. Digitizing such information makes work easier for both students and museum employees: • Important documentation; for example for an exhibition this may include: - When - Where - Which artist - Which items/pictures • Projects and work in progress • Restoration and maintenance processes • Exhibitions • Moving and reassembling constructions and objects FotoWare can easily be adapted to conform to any international library and museum authorities’ standards. Since it is based on the XMP metadata standard it can be tailored to each individual customer’s needs. For small organizations, such as local historical societies, FotoWare’s solutions for small companies are invaluable for handling archiving and retrieval. For many museums and local authorities, feedback and information from the public is an important source of information for images and artifacts. Members of the public can easily send comments on images to the museum, which will receive this information linked to a particular image. This is a useful way to obtain information from the public that would otherwise have been lost. To make sorting and retrieving images easier, it is possible to add markers such as a local authority coat of arms, a national flag or any custom marker. FotoWare’s solutions can also be used as a tool for communication with contributors of historical photographs, objects and artifacts. Daily tasks such as file transfers and uploading to the Internet, plus a host of other operations can be set up as automated workflows that require a minimum of user intervention. This saves time for employees and ensures that the job is done correctly every time.
