THE Qatar Tourism Authority’s
(QTA) promotional road show has
concluded. Covering six cities across
the Gulf, the road show sought to
boost awareness of Qatar’s tourism
offerings as an ideal destination for
Eid al Fitr and Eid al Adha.
During the road show QTA officials
from the hospitality, culture, sports
and leisure sectors met business and
incentive travel professionals to highlight Qatar’s potential as an ideal destination to celebrate the two holidays.
The campaign started in Al Khobar
in Saudi Arabia before moving on to
Riyadh, Kuwait, Muscat, Abu Dhabi
and Dubai. QTA’s strategy during the
road show aimed to promote Qatar’s
authentic heritage and rich past while
highlighting its focus on building the
future through promotion of meetings, sports, cultural, leisure and educational activities.
“This road show was an initiative we
launched by specifically targeting professionals in the MICE (meetings,
incentive, convention, exhibitions)
industry,” said Abdulla Malalla al
Bader, director of tourism at Qatar
Tourism Authority. “The tour was very
successful. Ee built new relationships
and strengthened existing ones in
these cities.”

OVER 100 Syrian artists are participating in a cultural week organised
to show solidarity with the Syrian
revolution.
The festival titled ‘Home that
Blossoms in Freedom’ was inaugurated on Friday at Katara, the
Cultural Village. The aim of the festival is to highlight the events that
have marked the Syrian revolution
for about 14 months now.
Different activities are planned
during the eight-day festival. Open
markets, film shows, theatre plays,
exhibitions, and poem presentations Visitors at the Syrian charitable open market, in Doha, on Friday.

WAAD Ali’s inspiring story
about her humble beginning
as a shy and young Qatari
female entrepreneur, who
started out in the business
world almost a year ago, was
the highlight of the first
Women Leading Change
Qatar (WLC-Qatar) networking event at the Katara
Art Centre recently.
Specifically designed for
Qatari women, the WLCQatar is a women empowerment programme which
seeks to develop, nurture
and promote the emerging
talent of Qatari women in
line with the Qatar National
Vision 2030.
During the event, Waad,
who is the owner of the
growing WAAD Designs
fashion label, was featured
as the first WLC-Qatar
Business Woman of the
Month.
“It started with a simple
idea,” she said. “After the
career fair, I was looking for
a job and I thought to myself,
‘why should I wait for someone to hire me? Why don’t I
just hire myself?’ So I put all
my savings into this business
and launched my first fashion line. I don’t regret anything about the decision,”
she said.
Taking the risk of opening
up her own business was the
first step for Waad. But she
faced several other challenges along the way.
“Things come really slowly.
You don’t have to get things
quickly. Because if you get
things so fast, chances are
they’ll also go away quickly.
You have to knock on the
right doors in seeking
growth and opportunities,”
she also said.
Along the way, Waad
found herself being transformed as a person by her
newfound career as a busi-
Waad Ali
nesswoman.
She said, “Dealing with
people was a challenge. I was
a shy person. I’m not a social
person. But through it, I
became more open and
friendly. Also, what has kept
me going is my passion for
fashion since I was a little
girl. Growing up, my mom
always told me that everything was possible.”
Asked about whether it
was advantageous to be a
businesswoman in Qatar,
she said, “It depends on
whether you are an optimist
or a pessimist. If optimist,
it’s an advantage, because
businesswomen get respected here nowadays. People
respect women who are
working and doing what
they love doing and are passionate about it”.
To date, Waad has done
several fashion shows
including her first fashion
show
at
the
Qatar
Foundation and her larger
show which was held at the
W Doha Hotel last year. Her
label is also gaining much
popularity across Qatar and
the region.
Currently, she’s working
on a limited edition line with
Blue Salon to develop a very
luxurious fashion line. “I just
followed what I really liked
doing and then things found
me. I don’t want to just stop
here. I want to go for something big and international,”
she said.
Kenyan expatriates to vote in next general elections

KENYAN expatriates in
Qatar will for the first time
vote in their country’s next
general elections, scheduled
to take place in March 2013,
Kenyan Ambassador to
Qatar HE Galma Mukhe
Boru said on Friday.
He was speaking at the
Madaraka Day celebrations
where over 1,500 expatriates joined other Kenyans
worldwide to commemorate
the 49th anniversary of
their country’s attainment
of internal self-rule, preceding full independence from
the United Kingdom on
December 12, 1963.
The event began with the
observation of a minute
silence in honour of those
who lost their lives in the
Villaggio mall tragedy. The
ambassador also sent condolences to the families of
Kenyans who lost their lives
in various grenade attacks
in Nairobi and Wajir counties, recently.
“As you may be aware, at
the end of this year or early
next year, Kenya will have a
momentous election to elect
not only a new president,
but also for the first time
elect senators, county governors, county women representatives and members
of parliament. The next
general elections will also
provide an opportunity for
the first time ever for
Kenyans in Diaspora to
vote.
As much as we may not
have much details at the
moment on how the elections will be conducted outside the country, my advice
when the plan materialises,
is for each and every one of
you to lead by example, and
vote for people of integrity
rather than along tribal
lines,” he said.
The ambassador said it
would be an opportunity for
Kenyans in the Diaspora
alongside their compatriots
at home “to elect patriotic
and transformational leaders that can take our nation
to greater heights of development and prosperity.”
Urging Kenyans to be
good ambassadors in Qatar,
he said, “We must be loyal
and honest to the government of Qatar and to the
organisations where we
work, be law abiding,
friendly as we have always
been, trustworthy, reliable,
dependable, hardworking,
tolerant and patient.”
The celebrations were
marked with various traditional and modern Kenyan
dances
and
songs.
Representatives from each
women and men’s group,
including the youths, delivered speeches.
Kenyan Ambassador to Qatar HE Galma Mukhe Boru and other dignitaries watch a Kenyan traditional
dance, in Doha, on Friday.
Euphracia Kalii Mutuku, a
senior youth representative,
said, “As a youth, mine is a
genuine call for the resuscitation and preservation of
authentic African cultures
especially by the Kenyan
Diaspora so that the next
generation of Kenyans in
Diaspora have an opportunity to know and live those
cultures and values,” she
said.
Steve Odiembo Omolo,
another youth representative, praised the envisaged
plans to engage the
Diaspora in nation building
through the pursuit of a
comprehensive strategy as
one of the flagship projects
under
the
National
Development Agenda Vision
2030.
“This will ensure creative
growth and exploitation of
the potentials of Kenyans
for realising this vision;
eradicating poverty and creating employment,” Omolo
said.
Tony Sigei, junior youth
representative, who has
lived away from home most
of his life appreciated the
efforts of the embassy in
bringing Kenyans together
and enlightening them.

ANTI-SMOKING
Society
Qatar has decided to make
concerted efforts to check the
spread of tobacco epidemic
which, it feels, can bring
about positive changes in
society. This decision was
taken during the Society’ s
meeting to observe ‘World No
Tobacco Day’ (WNTD) that
was observed with a table talk
and group discussion over the
weekend. The event was attended by students, parents,
physicians, social workers,
businessmen, socio-cultural
activists and members of various communities in Qatar.
Inaugurating the Society
activities for WNTD, Chief
Executive Officer of City
Exchange Sharaf P Hameed
offered his support and cooperation for creating awareness about the harmful effects
of smoking and its cost to
individuals and society. He
said, “It is our corporate
responsibility and we are
privileged to join in this campaign. Ensuring the protection of the public, including
women and children, from
exposure to tobacco smoke,
passive smokers should be
the concern of all. Everyone

has to play their role in
achieving this noble goal.”
He complemented the
Society for its continuing
awareness drive focusing on
both first-hand and secondhand smoking as both are
equally dangerous. “Some
people say it is not our concern as we don’t smoke. It is
not true as passive smoking is
as injurious as smoking firsthand,” he added.
Dr Abdul Rasheed, president of the Society, delivered
the keynote address. He
highlighted the ill effects of
tobacco consumption and
urged the public to uphold
the anti-tobacco message by
all possible ways and means.
Citing case studies and surveys, he drew a picture of the
current scenario and underlined the importance of
awareness
drive.
K
Mohammed Easa, a social
worker, stressed the seriousness of the situation and
called tobacco a social evil. “If
we work together to make
our society free of the evil of
smoking, it will definitely
produce wonderful results.
To divert the attention and to
make people healthy and
‘Big Talk, small talk’

comfortable, the community
should promote alternative
entertainment programmes
including cultural fests and
sports activities,” he said.
Abdul Hakeem, a young
marketing professional, referred to the smart tactics
employed by the tobacco
companies to lure youngsters. He suggested ways
and means to counter these
campaigns. Trans Orient
Travels Manager KP Nurudheen opined that the society should view smoking as a
serious evil like alcoholism
and drug addiction. If we
take the issue lightly, the evil
will spread and all of us will
suffer. All substances which
harm humans directly or indirectly are evil and it is our
duty to wipe out evil from
society,” observed Zainul
Abideen Darimi, a young
religious scholar. Abhik Roy
of KIMS Qatar Medical
Centre and Neil Noronha of
World Health Spring Clinic
also spoke on the occasion.
The CEO of Media Plus
Amanulla Vadakkangara
welcomed the gathering and
Abdul Fathah Nilambur proposed a vote of thanks.
IN line with the global observance of ‘World No Tobacco
Day 2012’ on May 31, Qatar
Petroleum’s medical services
department conducted a
‘health and wellness road
show’ recently to highlight the
range of serious health risks
associated with smoking.
Held under the patronage
of Minister of Energy and
Industry and Chairman and
Managing Director of QP HE
Dr Mohammed bin Saleh al
Sada, the road show was
organised with the support
and encouragement of
Ahmad Ali Abdulla al
Mawlawi, director for administration, and with the guidance of Dr Mahmood Abdul
Rahman al Jaidah, manager
for medical services at QP.
The ‘health and wellness
road show’ was held at the
TransWorld Tower, where
the administration directorate and different QP
departments such as human
resources, organisation and
systems and corporate training, are located.
During the event, QP
healthcare personnel led by
Dr Nadeem Siddiqui, Dr
Ahmad Latif and Dr
Abdelrahman
Mohgoub
Ibrahim Dagig made presentations focusing on the link
between smoking and health
problems and on QP’s existing programmes to help
smokers break the habit.
The two-hour programme,
which was held in two sessions, also included screening
tests and a quiz competition
for all participants. “With smoking recognised as the leading cause of preventable deaths worldwide, our activities to
mark ‘World No Tobacco Day’
are in line with our continued
efforts to work tirelessly towards safeguarding the health of
smokers and non-smokers
alike,” said Dr al Jaidah.
Consistent with its adherence to high standards in
occupational health, QP
strictly implements a NoSmoking Policy in all its
offices and facilities throughout the country. To provide
assistance to employees who
want to quit the habit, the
corporation’s medical services department has set up
Smoking Cessation Clinics
covering all QP locations in
Doha, Dukhan, Mesaieed
Industrial City and Ras Laffan
Industrial City.
FASHION AVENUE EXPO
CATHERINE W GICHUKI
DOHA
AN art exhibition featuring
exclusive paintings and sculptures of three artists opened
at the Anima Gallery, the Pearl, on Saturday. The expo called ‘Big Talk, small talk’ features works of Lebanese-French artist Elie Bourgely, Lebanese artist Jean-Marc Nahas and French artist Mayak.
To conclude on July 31, the
expo reflects Elie’s memory
lane and inner dialogue, Jean-Marc’s revolt against social and political injustices
and Mayak’s complex and
intertwined human links.
The painting and sculptures
tell the story of humanity
from within.
The price of their works
ranges from QR20,000 to
QR100,000.
Speaking at a press conference, the artists explained at
length their works.
Jean-Marc paintings showcase faces and expressions they wear. Among the paintings
are of women in fear, warring
women and women in black
veils done on acrylic on canvas. They show women in fear,
tears rolling down their
cheeks and hands lifted up.
The revolution of a whole nation springs out of a single face.
“I paint determination and
struggle. The gesture of each
line is held as a shield against
oppression in contrast to
freedom. My paintings are
universal. Pain is human but
we continue to laugh. In this
journey of faces, I long for
humanity, I ask for justice,
through a spectrum of
colours and the stroke of the

brush,” he said.
The works of Elie are done
using mix media. Among
them are the chair, the carpet
and waiting done with mix
media on wood. Black is
apple which is mix media on
canvas, besides others.
The price of their
works ranges from
QR20,000 to
QR100,000.
“My work is all about traces
that we leave every day in our
daily lives at home, at work
and we can’t see it. I construct
a small building out of memory. Unveiling the memory can
be the memory’s therapy. It is
kind of destruction through
art, forgetting for a second,
major ‘question’, nostalgia for
what is true and genuine. Art
revives this memory and
transforms itself into an
escape route for everything
tragic and painful,” he said.
Mayak’s works done on
acrylic on canvas showcase
the world of childhood as
contrasted with the world of
adulthood. The work creates a dialogue between the
two stages and paints the
link between the two as a
flow from within. The paintings displaying multiplication of faces linked and
clustered over each other
holds within it a dimension
acquired from ancestors
and genetic legacy.
“My muse is the relationship between the human with
himself and others, this is a
fascination I project through
my paintings. My works are a
dialogue between my inner
self and the surroundings,”
he said.
Commenting on the expo,
the gallery’s Manager Delphine Meaux said, “Through
this expo we wanted to be
more contemporary and to
connect. We are happy to
exhibit upcoming and wellknown artists in our gallery.
The artists are linked and the
exhibition is harmonious.”
Fashion aficionados (top) take a look at the designer collections during the Fashion Avenue exhibition, in Doha, on Saturday. The
three-day exhibition will showcase innovative products — including jewellery, accessories, abayas and perfumes — designed by
10 Qatari women.

World Environment Day
2012 celebrations, recently.
Upholding the bank’s tradition of supporting events that
raise awareness on environmental and social issues, al
khaliji supported the event as
‘Platinum Sponsor’ for the
second consecutive year.
“As a ‘next generation’ bank,
our primary concern is, of

face today. We are proud to yet
again support Qatar’s celebration of the event.”
Under the theme ‘A Green
Economy: Does it include
you?’, World Environment
Day kicked off on May 25. It
was again organised by a local
group ‘Friends of the Environment Center’ and under
the auspices of Dr Saif Ali al
Hajari, chairman of the center and vice-chairman of the
Qatar Foundation. The worldwide campaign itself is managed by the United Nations
Environment Programme. Similar to last year, the celebrations are designed to directly
engage the public with a
painting contest encouraging
people of all ages to creatively
portray the contest’s theme
‘Save the Environment.’
The celebrations will culminate with the award and appreciation ceremony to be held
on the final day on June 5.
“At al khaliji, we not only stand by environmental and
social awareness initiatives,
but are also committed to Qatar’s National Vision 2030,”
said McCall. “The vision calls
for preservation of the environment, and under our corporate social responsibility
programme, we are committed to the same. We take our
obligations to the community
seriously, and our support for
similar events in the past is
testament to that fact. We are
excited about this year’s event.
Last year, over 1,500 families
and 50 schools participated.
We expect more participants
in this year’s World Environment Day 2012.”
