Principal’s Message
Dear Parents and Guardians,
It is hard to believe that nearly three
months have passed since reopening our
doors in September for the start of
another exciting and rewarding school
year. It was only 5 months ago that the grade 12
scholarship and award winners highlighted in this
issue of the Piper were walking across the stage with
their peers to embark on the next leg of
their life journey. On behalf of the staff at
West Vancouver Secondary, we sincerely
wish all of our graduates of 2011 the very
best and hope that you too are enjoying
your year and continuing to achieve the
goals that you set for yourselves.
To the parents and guardians of our grade 8
students, as well as families new to the
school, I trust that the first few months have left you
with the feeling that West Vancouver Secondary
School is an exceptional place to be. We are pleased
that you are a part of our school community and look
forward to a long and meaningful relationship with
you and your children. The staff at WVSS is proud of
the work that they do, the programs that we offer, and
the extra-curricular opportunities available for our
students. I hope that all of the students find ways to
get involved either in class, by joining a club or team,
or trying out for a part in the drama production. As
you may have experienced, time goes by very quickly
and I encourage you to take advantage of
opportunities as they arise.
I would like to thank and congratulate the students
who were elected to Student Council and who joined
Grad Committee. These two student groups play an
important role in the school and participate in
decision making activities that shape many of the
events that the rest of the student population enjoy
The Piper

and school newspaper for:

during the year.
Thank you to returning PAC co-chair Gordon Holley
and welcome to new PAC co-chair Russell Ladd as
they undertake this important role. The PAC is
looking forward to continue the work that they do
supporting the school and students, as well as
offering informative and valuable workshops for
parents to attend. The PAC maintains their
web page on the school site, and I encourage
you to visit their site to see what they are
offering and how you, too, can become
involved!
As I look ahead at the events and opportunities
for students this year, I am confident that our
school community is well served. Already the
fall teams are well underway, as are the
upcoming concerts, school play, and innumerable
number of clubs and volunteer opportunities for
students. Please be sure to check the school website
regularly for information as we do our best to keep it
current and relevant.
Overall our school start up this year has been smooth
and that is a reflection of the hard work done by our
staff both in the classrooms and in the office. As well,
we have been impressed by the tone that the students
have set early in the school this year. They arrived in
September full of enthusiasm and a willingness to
quickly focus on their studies. I continue to be
amazed by the accomplishments of our students, the
high degree of professionalism and care exhibited by
our staff, and the level of support that we receive
from our parents. Thank you for continuing to make
West Vancouver Secondary School an exceptional
place to learn.
Sincerely,
Steve Rauh

Our Generation Can Make A Difference!
We Day is much more than just one day of commemoration and inspiration. We Day is the movement of our moment in time – a movement of young individuals participating in changes globally as well as locally. Within the jam
-packed stadium of cheering adolescents, We Day brought some of the greatest and most important social issues of
today to the forefront. Also, this day provided teens with effective methods where every young person can find
their place within the movement to create global change. We were lifting signs that read “We Believe” and “We
Day” high above our heads to show our contribution. Vancouver had its own set of special guests, which included
Mikhail Gorbachev and Shaquille O’Neal. Down with Webster, Shawn Desman, and Hedley also performed in We
Day, pumping up the vast crowd of teenagers with entertaining music! There were also emotional climaxes. For
example, a former child soldier, Michel Chikwanine, shared a story with us at We day about his unimaginable pain
and struggles. His willingness and beliefs in the possibility for change makes him a remarkable individual. We day
stimulated the energy and passion of a community of change makers. We Day was an exciting experience for everyone who got to go, and motivated many of the 18,000 children, teachers, and teenagers in the crowd. After coming to We Day, the numerous speakers inspired us to create a change in our world and to achieve bigger goals for
the year and the following years to come. We Day brings youth together in an exhilarating setting to show them
that they are not alone in their journey to make a difference.

DRAMA PRODUCTIONS 2012
‘THE CANTERBURY
TALES’
Twenty-seven pilgrims and two stage managers
will set off from the Kay Meek Centre’s main
stage on Feb. 29, Mar. 1 & 2 for
Canterbury. Here is your opportunity to enjoy
one of the most famous works in the English
canon and journey with Chaucer’s bawdy, noble,
conniving characters without having to endure the
discomforts of a medieval road trip.
WEST VAN’S NEWEST CLUB ‘ KIVA”
Every year at West
Vancouver Secondary
School new clubs emerge,
generally with the same
idea and target in mind, but
this year that has all
changed with the founding of
Kiva. Kiva is a non-profit
organization that aims to
lend a hand up, not a hand
out. Kiva uses a method
called micro-financing.
Micro-financing is a system
that allows you to loan
money, and have it returned
once a profit is made.
Kiva’s target is to microfinance loans to
entrepreneurs in third world
countries, in order to help
them accomplish their goal
of starting a business or a
farm. By lending money to
these aspiring entrepreneurs
opposed to just donating and
letting them live off of
financial aid, you actually
help build their economy as
well as add value to their currency, providing them with a brighter future. Micro-finance is the new
upcoming way of giving a donation, by loaning just one small amount, you can have your loan returned to
you after your chosen entrepreneur makes a profit off of their new business, which you can then recycle to
help change another life. As a new club at West Vancouver Secondary School, Kiva will focus on raising
as much awareness and money as possible, in order to make a difference. Come to room C331 Tuesdays at
lunch to help us change lives.
--Stephanie Forbes (Founder of Kiva at WVSS)

In September, the grade 8s embarked on a 3-day trip to Keats Island. The purpose of the trip was to meet new
friends, build cooperative group work skills, and develop decision-making and leadership skills, and foster a sense
of independence. Students participated in a variety of group and individual adventure activities including a highropes course, low ropes course, climbing wall, bouldering wall, archery, orienteering, campfire survival skills and
mountain biking. Students were encouraged to challenge preconceived notions of their abilities and to take a
small step outside of their comfort zone.
