Who Are You?
BY RABBI DAN LEVIN
A famous Hasidic rabbi was walking
along the road, when a young police
officer accosted him. “Who are you?”
he asked. “Where did you come from?
Where are you going?”
The rabbi paused for a moment and
asked the young officer: “How much
do they pay you to stand at this post?”
Confused, the officer said, “Five Zlotys.”
The rabbi said, “I will pay you another
five Zlotys if you promise to be here
every day and ask me those same three
questions: ‘Who are you? Where did you
come from? Where are you going?”
We are entering the time of year when
we need to be asking ourselves a lot
of questions. The High Holy Days ask
each of us to reflect on the very same
questions posed by the young officer.
Where did you come from? In South
Florida, we often answer that question
with the town or city where we used to
live “up north.” We sometimes answer
that question by remembering the town
from where our families immigrated

sacred ritual and moral code. We come
from a people who have sought to define
and redefine in every generation what it
is that the Holy One demands of us, and
to pursue a life in which we advance
the causes of wisdom, understanding,
compassion, justice, and peace.
It seems in every generation, there
are some who believe they are the
true guardians of what Judaism really
is. So rigid are their beliefs, that they
have the audacity to declare that Jews
who look at Judaism differently aren’t
really Jewish. But they’re wrong. Over
the centuries, Jews have always found
different authentic paths to participate
in the covenant: the schools of Hillel
and Shammai; the Pharisees and the
Sadducees; Sephardi and Ashkenazi;
Reform and Orthodox.
Sometimes we see how others
live their Jewish lives and we feel a
measure of distance if not revulsion.
When we see on the news a Jewish
man who murders on-lookers at a gay
When we see on the news a Jewish man who murders on-lookers
at a gay pride parade in Jerusalem in what he claims to be “God’s
name”, or we read about Jewish settlers who firebomb a Palestinian
house, killing a child, and spray paint: “Long live King Messiah”
on the walls, and we feel anger, resentment, and shame.
How could someone do that in the name of Judaism?
to America. But I think the High Holy
Days invite us to go deeper. We come
from a spiritual place too.
We come from a people who for
centuries have joined a covenant, a
commitment passed on generation to
generation to wrap ourselves in Torah
and tradition, and to live our lives by a
pride parade in Jerusalem in what he
claims to be “God’s name,” or we read
about Jewish settlers who firebomb a
Palestinian house, killing a child, and
spray paint: “Long live King Messiah”
on the walls, we feel anger, resentment,
and shame. How could someone do
that in the name of Judaism?
But we cannot allow other Jews to
keep us from practicing Judaism in
a way that makes sense and inspires
us. We each need, as Jews, to push
ourselves to answer that question:
“Who are you?”
There is a place in Judaism for each
of us, a Judaism that is both accessible
and meaningful. In the New Year, we
need to define ourselves as Jews in
the context of our own exploration,
in dialogue with sages and teachers
whose voices echo throughout the
ages through the pages of text and the
experience of tradition. It takes some
effort to be part of that conversation,
but we find our spirits far more fulfilled
when we can truly find our place in the
covenant.
Each of us in the New Year will be
asked: “Where are you going? Who do
you want to be in the New Year?” Take
advantage of the many opportunities
Temple Beth El will offer you this year
to engage in these questions, that we
may begin 5776 proud of who we will
become as Jews. Aimee and I wish
everyone a sweet, healthy, and happy
New Year.

A MESSAGE FROM BARRY PODOLSKY
Once a Year
Temple Beth El President

NOISE. We are surrounded by noise. There
is physical noise like an airplane flying
overhead or city traffic. There is the noise of
24 hour news programs on TV often saying
very little, but saying it very often. Then
there is the noise of endless emails, junk mail
(printed and electronic) or my favorite – drug
commercials on TV that are so enticing, you
almost wish you had the disease so you could
take the pill!
At least once in the year we have the
opportunity to “tune out” all the noise.
The High Holy Days provide a “time out”
from daily life. A time for
reflection, evaluation,
celebration,
repentance and
goal-setting.
I hope you
will find
our various
services and
programs
an excellent
source for your “time out.”
It’s also a time to be charitable, really
charitable. That may mean a money donation
or it may mean performing an act of
kindness. No matter our own circumstance,
we know most of the world lives a far more
challenged existence.
And, it’s also a time for audacious
hospitality. As part of the Beth El Community,
we need to provide holiday gatherings for one
another. OK, it can be a lot of work – so use
plastic. You don’t cook for company any more
– then order food or ask each guest to bring
something. No one wants to be alone on the
holidays! It’s not too late. Call (or email or
text – depending on your age) a few friends
and invite them to share a holiday meal
together. What’s a holiday without food and
hospitality? It’s part of being Jewish.
Let me know how it goes. Forward your
holiday meal photos to me. Maybe they’ll end
up in the next Chronicle or Facebook album!
The Podolskys wish you a happy and
noiseless holiday.

The Facilities Planning Task Force is
continuing its work designing the proposed
renovations and additions to both campuses. On July 22, after a formal RFP (request
for proposal) and interview process, we
selected PGAL Architects as the architect
for the project. PGAL is a national firm with
an office in Boca Raton and we are very
excited to begin working with them on the
final design phase of the project. The Task
Force has also just completed the first draft
of a 25 page detailed project requirements
document which we will provide to PGAL
so they have a full understanding of our
functional needs. We will be forming
specialized task forces in the coming months
to work on specific aspects of the project that
are more narrowly focused. For example, we
| tbeboca.org
may have a technology task force to work on
IT and telecommunications requirements;
a recognition board task force to work on
how to best standardize and modernize all
the various plaques and donor boards that
currently line the walls of our lobby; and other
specific task forces as project needs dictate. We are still anticipating 12 to 18 months
of design and permitting activities before
significant construction
will begin on the Schaefer
Family Campus. Please
check future issues of The
Chronicle for progress
updates.

A Journey:
The Sacred
Choice
A MESSAGE FROM
RABBI MERLE
E. SINGER
This year is the
jubilee year of my
rabbinate...50
years since I was
ordained rabbi,
and 36 years
(double Chai) of
which I have had
the privilege of serving as rabbi
of Temple Beth El.
In honor of the 50th year
celebration, I will be speaking
on Yom Kippur afternoon,
sharing with you reflections: “A
Journey: The Sacred Choice.” In
life’s journey, it is for us to make
music, at first with all that we
have, and then, when that is no
longer possible, to choose to
make music with whatever we
have left. And I tell this using my
personal experiences - despite
all my life failures due to severe
dyslexia and now Parkinson’s that it is possible to succeed.
Let’s welcome in the new year
together.

7:00-8:30pm • Schaefer Family Campus
Temple Beth El is pleased to offer a weekly
course taught by the clergy and other
experts in the community. The course covers
topics such as holidays, customs, life-cycle
events, values, theology, prayers and rituals,
Jewish texts, history, and Hebrew. There is
an expectation that one will complete weekly
reading assignments. At the end of the
course, there will be a comprehensive shortanswer review given to those individuals who
are pursuing conversion. Introduction to
Judaism is open to Jews and non-Jews alike.
Often, a Jewish partner, friend, or family
member will choose to accompany the prospective convert to the classes. This
class is also useful for non-Jews who do not intend to convert but are interested
in learning more about Judaism. It is also helpful for people who were born and
raised as Jews but feel as though they never received a solid Jewish education.
All are welcome. Contact Rabbi Greg Weisman at 561-391-8900

Being Jewish is a Commitment
BY M A R C Y S C H U LT Z
Marcy Schultz
Associate Director of Jewish
Living and Learning
[email protected]
It is with great excitement and pride that I begin a new journey as the Associate Director
of Jewish Learning and Living, again! When I served this congregation from 2004-2011,
I approached each day with the knowledge of the sacred nature of our work. As an
educator who also grew up in this incredible congregation, it is my goal to create the same
experiences for our congregants that drew me to Judaism as a commitment and career. I
often reflect on what made me so passionate during my formative years that would guide
me down a road of professional Jewish life. What does being Jewish mean to me, and
more importantly what do I do with it?
•Continue to seek knowledge so that I can be proud of my Jewish Heritage
•Commit to living an honorable life
•Do Mitzvot
•Become involved in the community
•Wrestle with my relationship with God
•Make decisions and observe religious aspects of Judaism
Our Religious School Visioning Task Force spent the year making sure our school
curriculum connects to our students in meaningful and long lasting ways; the Task Force
will continue to explore these goals this year and together we will ensure
that the Jewish education your children receive will stay with them into
adulthood.

WELCOME LOTEM!
This year we are very excited to welcome a young Israeli woman, Lotem Eilon, to our
congregation, school and youth engagement department. Lotem will be teaching
our students, adding a Hebrew component to Kehillah during Religious School,
chaperoning youth group events and retreats, teaching adult education and making
sure that Israel is an integral part of every aspect of Temple Beth El. We are very
excited to be part of this joint program between Temple
Beth El, URJ Camp Coleman and the Jewish Agency in Israel
(JAFI).
Lotem is a 23 year-old from Haifa who attended Leo
Baeck High School in Israel where she majored in film and
psychology. During her Air Force service she served as a
videographer and photographer, running her unit’s site. She
spent the past three summers at URJ Camp Coleman. Lotem
also participated in the Roswell Klal Yisrael Fellowship which
brought together 15 young leaders ages 20-26 from Europe,
Israel and the United States to serve their communities as

active change agents committed to global Reform Judaism,
Jewish peoplehood and Israel.
Rabbi Levin, Jules Wolfberg and Robin Eisenberg have all worked with Lotem at
URJ Camp Coleman and believe she will have a powerful impact on our children,
families and congregation. Please welcome her and get to know her.

MITZVAH PROJECT
AUSTIN STEIN
For my mitzvah project, I taught children at the
Florence Fuller Child Development Center how to play
the recorder. Florence Fuller is a non-profit which
makes a positive difference in the lives of children from
economically challenged families. I spent six weeks
teaching them to play basic rhythms, styles, and tempos
on recorders. At the end of the six weeks, my students
put on a concert for their parents. The parents were
so proud of their children and the children were so
grateful for all they had learned. I will never forget the
smiles on the children’s faces. I plan on continuing to
provide music lessons to children in the future!

Growing Up Jewish
Cindy Korshin
Beth El Early
Learning Center
Director

What makes a child feel Jewish? How do they
identify as part of a group? Routines are ways
that we give children a sense of continuity and
familiarity. Children know that we will have
challah for snack on Shabbat for example.
We’ll sing Put A Chicken In The Pot, our
clergy will lead a service as we come together
for Tot Shabbat. They know from the time
they begin to speak, that we recite a blessing
before snack and lunch. We know they have
gained knowledge when they can apply it.
Just watch a child on Friday morning in the
Dramatic Play area of the classroom, or at
home as the year progresses. You will see that
they are learning from a very young age what
it means to be Jewish.
WE ARE BLOGGING!
We hope that as the year progresses you will have a better
understanding of how we teach your children. All ELC teachers will
be blogging this year! They will provide the narrative, along with
photographic documentation to explain the process of learning at the
Beth El Early Learning Center. Our educational goal is to establish an
inquisitive and stimulating learning environment, rich with tradition,
surrounded by love. Our communication goal is to give parents a
window into the learning experiences that take place everyday.
Welcome to Parenthood!
Parenthood is a group of parents dedicated to the Beth El Early
Learning Center. This year, Parenthood has adopted a new
motto which is Talk-Join-Connect-Create a Legacy. Parenthood
hopes that all the Beth El Early Learning Center parents and
grandparents will become involved. It all starts by talking and
getting to know one another. From there, we hope parents will
join Parenthood to make lasting connections and friendships.
Building an interwoven community of parents is a large part of
our mission. Creating a legacy with positive memories for the
children is paramount. Parenthood hosts events, and fundraisers, helps with staff
appreciation and much more. Our largest event, Family Fun
Day will be held on Saturday, January 30, 2016. We also
have a new event this year which is a Kids Fashion Show in
April, 2016. There are various ongoing task forces such as
the Library Task Force and Comparative Analysis Task Force.
Parenthood Members may also serve on various committees
such as Teacher Appreciation Week, Yearbook and Graduation.
Members are not required to volunteer their time. All Beth El
Early Learning Center parents and grandparents are welcome
to join. To learn more, email parenthood@

staff at the Early Learning Center.

What makes me a Jew?
There are as many
answers to this question
as there are people
answering! For me, being
Jewish is more cultural
than religious. Yes, I

what I am. As Sisterhood
Co-President this year, I am getting an opportunity to really
think about what being Jewish means and how to bring a sense
of Jewishness to the greater temple community.
Sisterhood embraces Judaism in everything we do.
Our events often take on a religious slant, but in a more
cultural way. Our trip to the Boca Museum to visit the
Helena Rubinstein exhibit is a great example of this. Helena
Rubinstein was a Jewish, woman entrepreneur who changed
how women look at beauty. Our upcoming events also
embrace Judaism in a variety of ways. We try to embrace
everyone’s idea of Judaism. We will be taking on issues
of finance, physical and mental fitness with the Women in
Balance Event at the Beck Family Campus in September and
we will decorate the beautiful Sukkah and celebrate Sukkot
with our religious school students in October. Please join Shari
and me for the many events offered by TBE WRJ that will help
you answer the question of what being Jewish means to you.
