A f t e r t h e C i v i l War, s o t h e s t o r y g o e s , o r m o r e s p e c i f i c a l l y a f t e r 1880, t h e F r e n c h - C a n a d i a n s began l e a v i n g t h e i r p r o vince i n a great flood, a l l o f i t directed t o p l a c e s l i k e L e w i s t o n , M a n c h e s t e r , Nashua, F a l l R i v e r , a n d W o o n s o c k e t , t o name b u t a few o f t h e m i l l towns. T h i s way o f l o o k i n g a t t h i n g s i s b o l s t e r e d b y t h e f a c t t h a t many F r a n c o - A m e r i can f o m i l i e s r e t a i n e d a c t i v e t i e s w i t h t h e f o l k s t h e y l e f t b e h i n d i n Canada. I t was n o t uncommon, a g e n e r a t i o n ago, f o r f a m i l y v i s i t s t o b e made t o c o u s i n s i n M o n t r e a l o r elsewhere. I n fact, the proximity of New E n g l a n d i s s u p p o s e d t o h a v e a c c o u n t e d f o r t h e French-Canadian d e s i r e t o e m i g r a t e t h e r e and h a r d l y anywhere e l s e . I n f a c t t o g a i n a more p r e c i s e p i c t u r e o f F r e n c h - C a n a d i a n e m i g r a t i o n , we n e e d t o s t e p b a c k a b i t f r o m t h e mop o f the United States. We n e e d t o r e c o g n i z e t h a t t h e F r e n c h - C a n a d i a n was n o t immune f r o m t h e impulse t o "go west" t h a t roused t h e h e a r t o f many o y o u n g A m e r i c a n . We a l s o need t o a p p r e c i a t e t h a t t h e u r g e t o e m i g r a t e t o t h e U n i t e d S t a t e s d i d n o t sudd e n l y m a t e r i a l i z e i n t h e decade f o l l o w i n g t h e C i v i l War. I t i s n o t our i n t e n t i o n here t o t r e a t o f a l l possible d e s t i n a t i o n s o f French Canadian e m i g r a t i o n . R a t h e r we w i l l t r y t o a p p r e c i a t e t h e l a r g e r p i c t u r e , and i n so d o i n g , perhaps g i v e t h e r e a d e r t h e chance t o uncover y e t another l o s t f a m i l y line. The F e d e r a l c e n s u s r e t u r n s f c r 1900 o f f e r some i n t e r e s t i n g s t a t i s t i c s t o t h e Franco-American r e s e a r c h e r . I n 1900, t h e census t a k e r needed t o a s c e r t a i n w i t h a f a i r degree o f p r e c i s i o n the c o u n t r y o f b i r t h of a l l foreigners l i v i n g i n the U n i t e d S t a t e s a s w e l l a s t h e i r y e a r of immigratioa I n t h e 1880 c e n s u s , t h e l a s t p r e v i o u s census t h a t i s a v a i l a b l e t o u s i n i t s e n t i r e t y , n o a t t e m p t was made t o d i s t i n g u i s h between t h e French-Canadian and t h e E n g l i s h - C a n a d i a n . I n 1900, t h e census t a k e r needed t o d i s t i n g u i s h between t h o s e C a n a d i a n s b o r n i n French-Canada and those born elsewhere i n the Dominion. The r e s u l t s a r e n o t a s a c c u r a t e a s we might l i k e . F o r one t h i n g , t h e r e s p o n d e n t needed t o d i s t i n g u i s h o n l y between E n g l i s h Canada and F r e n c h Canada. T h i s was n o t a s t a t e m e n t o f e t h n i c i t y , b u t r a t h e r one o f birthplace. T h i s w r i t e r h a s s e e n many o c e n s u s e n t r y f o r an O ' B r i e n o r a M c D o n a l d , b u t who w e r e b o r n i n Q u e b e c , a n d who w e r e t h e r e f o r e r e p o r t e d as F r e n c h - C a n a d i a n f o r census purposes. E v e n i f we a l l o w f o r a p r o p o r t i o n o f t h e " F r e n c h - C a n a d i a n s ' ' t o be i n f a c t o f I r i s h o r E n g l i s h s t o c k , we m u s t a l s o r e cognize t h e f a c t t h a t a French speaker b o r n i n O n t a r i o w o u l d s i m i l a r l y be r e p o r t e d as b e i n g i n E n g l i s h Canada. I n short, the c e n s u s f i g u r e s a r e n o t t o be t a k e n as gosp e l , b u t r a t h e r as r o u g h i n d i c a t i o n s as t o t h e s i z e o f a r e g i o n ' s French-Canadian popu l ~ t i o n . G i v e n t h a t p r e f a c e , we m u s t a l s o s t a t e t h a t t h e census c o m p i l e d two s o r t s o f d a t a w i t h respect t o foreigners : the foreign b o r n a n d t h e A m e r i c o n - b o r n whose p a r e n t s were b o r n i n o f o r e i g n c o u n t r y . These l a t e r i n d i v i d u a l s a r e r e f e r r e d - t o as " f o r e i g n stock." F o r t h e e n t i r e c o u n t r y , i n 1900, 395,297 p e o p l e a r e r e p o r t e d as h a v i n g been b o r n i n F r e n c h Canada. Of t h i s t o t o l , 3 0 5 , 160 w e r e l i v i n g i n t h e N o r t h A t l o n t i c d i v i s i o n [ c o m p r i s i n g New E n g l a n d , New Y o r k , New J e r s e y , a n d P e n n s y l v a n i a ) . A mere 2,500 w e r e l i v i n g i n New J e r s e y a n d P e n n s y l v a n i a , s o we c a n c o n s i d e r t h e f i g u r e a s r e p r e s e n t i n g New E n g l a n d a n d New Y o r k . ( ! ) The S o u t h A t l a n t i c d i v i s i o n c o n t a i n e d o mere 6 3 6 and t h e S o u t h C e n t r a l , 1,460. Outside o f the Northeast, only eight states c o n t a i n e d more t h a n 2,000 F r e n c h - C a n a d i o n s : O h i o w i t h 2,903; I l l i n o i s , 9,129; M i c h i g a n , 32,483; W i s c o n s i n , 10,091; b i i n n e s o t o , 12,063; N o r t h D a k o t a , 3,162; Montana. 3 , 5 1 6 : a n d C a l i f o r n i a , 2,410. ( 2 ) Faced w i t h s u c h s t a t i s t i c s , one m i g h t be t e m p t e d t o c o n c l u d e t h a t F r e n c h - C a n a d i a n s h a d i n d e e d m i g r a t e d a l m o s t s o l e l y t o New E n g l a n d a n d u p s t a t e New Y o r k . W i t h 77% of a l l t h e n o t i o n ' s French-Canadians, t h e c o n c l u s i o n w o u l d seem o b v i o u s . The p r o p o r t i o n f a l l s a b i t when we l o o k a t the f i g u r e s f o r French-Canadian stock. The N o r t h e a s t r e t a i n s t h e l e a d w i t h 72% ( 5 8 3 , 3 4 1 o u t o f an 8 1 0 , 3 4 1 t o t a l . ) A l l the N o r t h - C e n t r a l s t a t e s (Ohio, I n d i ana, I l l i n o i s , M i c h i g a n , W i s c o n s i n , M i n n e s o t a , Iowa, M i s s o u r i , N o r t h D a k o t a , S o u t h D a k o t a , Nebraska, and K a n s a s ) c l a i m a t l e a s t 3,000 F r e n c h - C a n a d i a n s t o c k . I n f o c t t h e n u m b e r s gc f r o m a l o w o f 3,003 f o r N e b r a s k a t o a h i g h o f 75,584 f o r M i c h i g a n . (3) We c a n see t h a t t h e s e t t l e m e n t p a t t e r n i s f a r more c c m p l e x t h a n w h a t w o u l d be a c c o u n t e d - f o r by t h e s i m p l e m o d e l o f e m i g r a t i o n t o w a r d t k ~ ec o t t o n m i l l s o f New E n g l a n d . Given t h e f o c t t h a t t h e French-Canadian p r e s e n c e i n t h e u p p e r M i d w e s t was a c t u a l l y f a r o l d e r t h a n t h u t i n New E n g l a n d , one f u r t h e r more s u s p e c t s t h a t a g o o d number o f F r a n c o - A m e r i c c n s were t h u s made " i n v i s i b l e " t o t h e c e n s u s t a k e r , a t l e a s t where t h e i r e t h n i c i t y w o u l d be c o n c e r n e d . I f o n e ' s p a r e n t s were b o r n i n t h e S t a t e s , t h e r e w o u l d s i m p l y be n o n a y t o r e c o r d e t h n i c o r i g i n . T h e h a b i t a n t was f i r s t a n d f o r e m o s t a farmer. F a r m i n g was t h e o n l y w o y o f l i f e t h o t h i s p e o p l e hod e v e r known. Farming w a s f u r t h e r m o r e p o s s i b l e on t h e l a n d s o u t h o f t h e S t . Lawrence R i v e r , e x t e n d i n g toward t h e b o r d e r w i t h t h e U n i t e d S t a t e s . A g r i c u l t u r e c o u l d a l s o be c a r r i e d a n i n a narrow band of t e r r i t o r y n o r t h of t h e river. The n e x t e l e m e n t i n t h e d e m o g r a p h i c 0 1 p i c t u r e was t h e p r o d i g i o u s f e r t i l i t y o f t h e Quebec people. Given t h e need f o r l a r g e f a m i l i e s , s o t h a t t h e l a n d c o u l d be t i l l e d , t h e p o p u l a t i o n of Quebec had doubled every twenty-seven years s i n c e t h e B r i t i s h c o n q u e s t . ( 1 3 ) L a n d was a v a i l a b l e i n t h e E a s t e r n Townships, b u t t h e l a n d t i t l e s c o s t money, sums o f c a s h t h e s i z e o f w h i c h many F r e n c h - C a v a d i a n f o r m e r s d i d n o t hove. Furthermore, s e t t l i n g i n the T o w n s h i p s w o u l d have meant s e v e r i n g thems e l v e s f r o m f o m i l y and f r i e n d s , and r i s k i n g c u l t u r a l i d e n t i t y i n on E n g l i s h - s p e a k i n g environment. I t was o b v i o u s f r o m t h i s s i t u a t i o n t h a t " s o m e t h i n g had t o g i v e . " Migrating t o New E n g l a n d o f f e r e d o n e solution. Yet before mid-century, the c o t t o n m i l l s were n o t i n o p o s i t i o n t o o f f e r on a l a r g e s c a l e w h a t t h e F r e n c h - C a n a d i a n needed. Granted, small French-speaking e n c l a v e s e x i s t e d i n u p s t a t e Vermont, and i n t h e B l a c k s t o n e V a l l e y o f Rhode I s l a n d a n d Massachusetts. B u t i t w o u l d n o t be u n t i l a f t e r t h e C i v i l War t h a t F r e n c h - C a n a d i a n s w o u l d be n e e d e d i n l a r g e n u m b e r s t o o f f s e t n I r i s h w o r k e r s l o s t i n b a t t l e and t h e n a t i v e New E n g l a n d s t o c k w h i c h , m o r e a n d more, were l e a v i n g t h e r e g i o n f o r t h e open spaces o f t h e f a r Midwest. I n these preC i v i l War t i m e s , t h e F r e n c h - C a n o d i a n d i d n o t seem t o h a v e l o s t h i s t a s t e f o r a g r i culture. H i s a t t i t u d e seems t o h o v e b e e n t h a t , i f f a r m i n g n o l o n g e r worked as i t s h o u l d i n Quebec, t h e h a b i t a n t w o u l d m e r e l y t r y i t elsewhere. The l a n d s o f t h e A m e r i c a n M i d w e s t w e r e no s t r a n g e r t o t h e French-Canadian. We s h o u l d remember t h a t F r e n c h - s p e a k e r s p a r t o o k i n t h e f o u n d i n g of n e a r l y e v e r y l a r g e midwestern c i t y : S t . Louis, D e t r o i t , Chicago, a n d S t . P a u l , t o name b u t o f e w . F r e n c h e x p l o r e r s had opened u p t h e i n t e r i o r o f t h e c o n t i n e n t i n t h e 1 7 t h and 1 8 t h c e n t u r i e s . T h e y h a d f r e q u e n t l y t a k e n n a t i v e women a s brides, with the r e s u l t that a sizeable number o f S i o u x and Chippewa c a r r i e d F r e n c h Canadion surnames. To t h i s e a r l i e r g r o u p o f i m m i g r a n t s was a d d e d a much l a r g e r wave, s t a r t i n g a r o u n d m i d - c e n t u r y . Whether i n t h e f o r e s t s o f W i s c o n s i n o r M i c h i g a n o r on t h e M i n n e s o t a p r a i r i e , t h e French-Canadian element c o n t i n u e d t o grow. I n I l l i n o i s , t h e s t o r y d e v e l o p e d somewhat d i f f e r e n t l y . G r a n t e d , J o l i e t and Marq u e t t e had been r e s p o n s i b l e f o r u s i n g t h e Chicago p o r t a g e i n 1673. Because o f t h i s a d j a c e n t s h o r t c u t between t h e G r e a t Lakes and t h e M i s s i s s i p p i , C h i c a g o w o u l d l a t e r g r o w i n t o t h e g r e a t m e t r o p o l i s o f t h e Amer i c a n Midwest. C o n t r o l o f the Chicago area s h i f t e d f r o m F r e n c h t o E n g l i s h i n 1763, b e f o r e l a n d i n g i n American hands a t t h e t i m e o f independence. A m e r i c a n c o n t r o l was o n l y t h e o r e c t i c a l , however, as B r i t i s h t r o o p s w o u l d n o t abondon t h i s i m p o r t a n t f u r t r a d i n g s i t e f o r s e v e r a l more y e a r s . A m e r i c a n c o n t r o l was e s t a b l i s h e d once and f o r a l l by t h e b u i l d i n g o f F o r t D e a r b o r n i n 1803. T h i s became t h e n u c l e u s o f the future c i t y . French-Canadians were c e r t a i n l y n o t numerous, b u t t h e y d i d f o r m t h e b a s i s o f I t i s noted that i n Chicago's population. t h e e l e c t i o n o f 1826, t w e n t y - o n e o f t h e t h i r t y - f i v e r e g i s t e r e d v o t e r s i n t h e town were French-Canadians. ( 14) With t h e o p e n i n g of t h e E r i e C a n a l i n 1825, t h e G r e a t L a k e s were f r e e t o n a v i g a t i o n from the e a s t . More i m p o r t a n t l y f o r towns b o r d e r i n g on t h e Lakes, t h e i r a g r i c u l t u r a l p r o d u c e c o u l d now b e s h i p p e d t o eastern c i t i e s . The p o p u l a t i o n o f C h i c a g o w o u l d g r o w a p o c e : f r o m l e s s t h a n 100 i n 1830 t o 4 , 4 7 0 i n 1840 a n d 2 9 , 9 6 3 i n 1 8 5 0 . With the harvest o f 1841, a notable agricultural s u r p l u s wos g e n e r a t e d i n n o r t h e r n I l l i n o i s , ( 1 5 ) much o f i t d e s t i n e d f o r t h e m a r k e t s o f New Y o r k , P h i l a d e l p h i a , and B o s t o n . News o f t h e a s t o u n d i n g f e r t i l i t y o f t h e s o i l was n o t l o s t on t h e r e s t of the nation. N e i t h e r were t h e p o t e n t i a l f o r t u n e s t h a t s t o c d t o b e made f r o m t r a d e on t h e a s - y e t - i n c o m p l e t e C h i c a g o - D e s P l a i n e s River canal. New r e s i d e n t s f l o c k e d i n l i t e r a l l y by t h e b o a t l o a d . I n the year 1845, 20,244 p a s s e n g e r s came f r o m B u f f a l o F a r e s s t o o d a t $10 f o r a by steamer.(l6) c a b i n and $5 f o r s t e e r a g e , a p r i c e t h a t many f o u n d t h e y c o u l d n o t r e f u s e . The l o n g - a w a i t e d c a n a l l i n k i n g t h e G r e a t Lakes w i t h t h e M i s s i s s i p p i b a s i n opened i n 1848. Now, f o r t h e f i r s t t i m e . i t was p o s s i b l e f o r t h e f a r m e r s o f n o r t h e r n I l l i n o i s t o s e n d s u r p l u s f a r m p r o d u c e down t h e M i s s i s s i p p i as w e l l a s t o w a r d New Y o r k . P r o d u c t i o n o f wheat d u r i n g t h e p e r i o d of t h e 1840's c o n t i n u e d t o c l i m b . Exports of t h i s g r a i n f r o m C h i c a g o t o w a r d t h e e a s t s t o o d a t 586,907 b u s h e l s i n 1842. Two y e a r s l a t e r , t h e f i g u r e had c l i m b e d t o 891,894. By 1847, t h e q u a n t i t y s h i p p e d had more t h a n d o u b l e d a g a i n , t o 1,974,304 bushels. (19) C h i c o g o ' s f i r s t r a i l l i n e opened i n 1848. Although a comporatively i n s i g n i f j c a n t e n t e r p r i s e , i t foreshodowed t h e day f o u r y e a r s l a t e r when C h i c a g o w o u l d h o v e d i r e c t r a i l l i n k s t o the eastern c i t i e s . ( 2 0 ) The c i t y was t u r n i n g i n t o a b o o m t o w n . Ever g r e a t e r q u a n t i t i e s o f f o o d were needed f o r the ever-growing population. A l l surpluses c o u l d be u n l o a d e d o n t o t h e c o m m o d i t i e s market. One h a s o n l y t o t h i n k o f t h e i m p o v i s h e d F r e n c h - C a n a d i a n f a r m e r b a c k i n Lower Canada, h i s w h e a t c r o p i n r u i n s , h i s p o t a t o e s r o t t i n g i n t h e f i e l d , t o w o n d e r how l o n g i t would t a k e f o r t h e news o f p r a i r i e r i c h e s to reach h i s ears. Illinois' In f a c t , the f i r s t French-Canadian s e t t l e r s s t a r t e d t r i c k l i n g i n by t h e mid40's. A study of census r e t u r n s f o r French C a n a d i a n s l i v i n g i n W i l l C o u n t y , 5 0 miles s o u t h of C h i c a g o i n 1850, shows t h a t 250 f a m i l i e s were a l r e a d y l i v i n g o n t h e l a n d . Of t h e s e , 1 1 0 r e p o r t e d u n d e r a g e c h i l d r e n born i n I l l i n o i s . Furthermore, t h e earlier o f t h e s e I l l i n o i s b i r t h s shewed t h a t a t l e a s t 2 2 F r e n c h - C a n a d i a n f a m i l i e s were p r e s e n t a t t h e f u t u r e B o u r b o n n a i s by 1 8 4 6 . T h e n u m b e r was u n d o u b t e d l y l a r g e r i f o n e f a c t o r s i n a p o r t i o n o f t h e f a m i l i e s who d i d n o t hove young, I l l i n o i s - b a r n c h i l d r e n t o declare t o the census taker. T h i s French-Canadian p r i e s t had been born a t Kamouraska i n 1809, t h e grandson o f t h e F r e n c h - s p e a k i n g r i v e r p i l o t who h a d guided Wolfe's troop transports upstream t o Quebec i n 1759. Ordained i n t h e Quebec c a t h e d r a l i n 1 8 3 3 , h e was a s s i g n e d t o v a rious porishes before starting a b r i l l i a n t career as a p r e a c h e r o f t e m p e r a n c e some s i x y e a r s l a t e r . His e l e v e n - y e a r i n v o l v e m e n t i n t h e t e m p e r a n c e movement i n Quebec l e d him t o d e l i v e r o v e r 5 0 0 s e r m o n s i n 110 churches and h a l l s , and to r e c e i v e t h e solemn p l e d g e s o f 2 0 0 , 0 0 0 p e o p l e t o f o r e v e r more f o r e s w e a r t h e u s e o f a l c o h o l i c b e v e r a g e s . !2 2 ) H i s c a r e e r a s a p u b l i c s p e a k e r was n o t without blemishes. Obliged t o leave the A r c h d i o c e s e o f Quebec f o r a n e p i s o d e o f p r i e s t l y i n d i s c r e t i o n t h a t was n e v e r a d e q u a t e l y made p u b l i c , ( 2 3 ) h e s o u g h t r e f u g e i n t h e O b l a t e monastery o f L o n g u e u i l . There, a f t e r a one-year n o v i t i a t e , t h e Oblates refused him permission t o continue. Q u i t e p o s s i b l y h a l f o f t h e p o p u l a t i o n had had t h e o p p o r t u n i t y t o h e a r h i m speak. His s t a r , s o l o n g on t h e r i s e , was h o w e v e r , destined t o take a sharp f a l l . By 1 8 5 1 , C h i n i q u y f o u n d h i m s e l f on t h e v e r g e o f b e i n g suspended f r o m h i s p r i e s t l y d u t i e s i n the Diocese o f Montreal, t h i s f o r i m p r o p e r a d v a n c e s t h a t h e h a d mode t o w a r d the opposite sex.(25) Pleading a lesser punishment, C h i n i q u y r e c e i v e d f i r s t t h e p e r m i s s i o n o f t h e b i s h o p o f M o n t r e a l , and s e c o n d l y t h a t o f t h e a r c h b i s h o p o f Quebec, t o a l l o w him t o e m i g r a t e t o the U n i t e d States. C l a i m i n g an i n v i t a t i o n f r o m B i s h o p Van d e V e l d e o f C h i c a g o , C h i n i q u y moved there. When C h i n i q u y r e f u s e d t o a c k n o w l e d g e t h e s u s p e n s i o n , 0 ' Regan e x communicated him. ( 3 1 ) T h e r e e n s u e d an a l l - o u t e f f o r t b y C h i niquy t o retain control of his parish a t S t . Ann, e v e n i f t h i s m e a n t s c h i s m a n d f i n a l separation from the C a t h o l i c Church. (34) Vicero is of the impression t h a t the t e r r i b l e c l a m o r c a u s e d by t h e C h i n i q u y a f f a i r i n t h e Canadian press served t o d i v e r t s i g n i f j c a n t French-Canadian migration from I l l i n o i s and from elsewhere i n t h e M i d w e s t . ( 3 5 ) A l t h o u g h t h e r e m i g h t b e some t r u t h t o t h i s s t a t e m e n t , i t must a l s o be r e m e m b e r e d t h a t t h e C i v i l War was b r e w i n g at t h i s point. A c c o r d i n g t o a v a i l a b l e d a t a taken from t h e Federal Census ret u r n s f o r 1 8 6 0 , 7 0 , a n d 80 we c a n m a k e s o m e o b s e r v a t i o n s on t h e i r g r o w t h i n n u m b e r s a n d also on t h e rate a t which t h e p o p u l a t i o n w a s a u g m e n t e d by new a r r i v a l s f r o m C a n a d a . A n n h a s f a l l e n t o 181; f o r K a n k a k e e , 206; and f o r B o u r b o n n a i s , 235 f a m i l i e s o f French-Canadian o r i g i n . A f i r s t o b s e r v a t i o n w o u l d b e t h a t some c o n t i n u e d i n f l u x o f p e o p l e was n e c e s s a r y a f t e r 1 8 6 0 f o r t h e p o p u l a t i o n t o g r o w by 6 0 4 i n one d e c a d e . Chiniquy's public break w i t h Rome, we m u s t a d m i t t h a t i t c o n t i n u e d a l b e i t a t a diminished rate. One c a n a l s o o b s e r v e t h a t t h e r a t e o f i n c r e a s e between 1860 and 1870, i f c a r r i e d o v e r t o t h e d e c a d e e n d i n g i n 1680, s h o u l d hove y i e l d e d c l o s e t o 2,500 h o u s e h o l d s . Clearly something d r a s t i c occurred. We m u s t l o o k f u r t h e r n o r t h a n d west t o f i n d t h e answer. To t h e n o r t h , C h i c a g o c o n t i n u e d t o e x pand. A f t e r t h e d i s a s t r o u s f i r e of 1 8 7 1 , t h e c i t y n e e d e d t o be r e b u i l t . New i n d u s t r i e s arrived, a l l i n g r e a t need of ambitious young w o r k e r s . With t h e Kankakee and I r o - quois county settlements s i x t y m i l e s from Chicago, t h a t a c e r t a i n number of y o u n g p e o p l e be d r a w n t o a mere f i f t y t o i t was n a t u r a l the counties' the metropolis. The s t a t e o f K a n s a s a c c o u n t s f o r m o s t o f t h e r e s t of t h e " m i s s i n g " p o p u l a t i o n . By t h e m i d - 1 8 7 0 1 s , a y o u n g c o u p l e who wished t o c o n t i n u e farming a s t h e i r ancest o r s had d o n e had l i t t l e c h o i c e b u t t o move from I l l i n o i s . The f a m i l y f a r m i n I l l i n o i s m i g h t w e l l go t o t h e e l d e s t s o n , b u t younge r b r o t h e r s needed t o e a r n a l i v i n g a l s o . I n a r e p l a y o f w h a t had b r o u g h t t h e i r p a r e n t s and g r a n d p a r e n t s from Canada a gener a t i o n e a r l i e r , t h e s e younger f o l k headed f o r t h e p l a i n s of K a n s a s . The n u c l e u s of a s e t t l e m e n t was c r e a t e d n e a r C l y d e , i n modern C l o u d c o u n t y . By 1 8 8 0 , W a s h i n g t o n a n d C l a y c o u n t i e s e a c h had 6 5 o r s o h o u s e h o l d s of F r e n c h - C a n o d i o n d e s c e n t . Cloud County, t o t h e i r w e s t , cont a i n e d a significantly l a r s e r n u m b e r : 375 families. Of a l l these, the great majority had c l e a r l y o r i g i n a t e d i n I l l i n o i s r a t h e r than d i r e c t l y i n Canada. The b i r t h p l a c e s of t h e c h i l d r e n a r e t h e t e l l - t a l e s i g n s . We f i n d t r a c e s of t h e s e I l l i n o i s F r e n c h Canadians e l s e w h e r e i n t h e Midwest: i n s o u t h e a s t e r n Nebraska and i n e o s t e r n S o u t h D o k o t a , b u t t h e r e t h e m a j o r i t y of t h e s e t t l e r s had come d i r e c t l y f r o m Q u e b e c . C l o u d , C l a y , and Washington c o u n t i e s i n Kansas were i n c o n t r a s t o v e r f l o w s e t t l e m e n t s o f K a n k a k e e ond I r o q u o i s c o u n t i e s , Illinois. We c a n e v e n u s e t h e c e n s u s r e t u r n s f r o m C l o u d C o u n t y , K a n s a s , i n 1900 t o g a u g e more a c c u r a t e l y t h e number o f p e o p l e o f F r e n c h C a n a d i a n d e s c e n t who l i v e d i n t h e A m e r i c a n Midwest. Granted, t h e sample i s s m a l l b u t nonetheless s i g n i f i c a n t . Let us note that t h e o f f i c i a l census f i g u r e s o f t h e " N o r t h C e n t r a l D i v i s i o n " f o r peole o f French Canadian s t o c k (second g e n e r a t i o n Americans h a v i n g a t l e a s t one p a r e n t b o r n i n F r e n c h C a n a d a ) s t o o d a t 198,451 f o r 1 9 0 0 . ( 3 7 ) A d d e d t o t h e s e a r e t h e 7 7 , 0 1 9 who a d m i t t e d t o b i r t h i n French Canada.(38) T h e s e numb e r s s h o u l d s t r i k e u s as b e i n g a b i t on t h e low side. I m m i g r a t i o n f r o m F r e n c h Canada t o t h e a g r i c u l t u r a l and f c r e s t e d s e c t i o n s o f t h e M i d w e s t had p r e c e d e d l a r g e - s c a l e i m m i g r a t i o n t o New E n g l a n d a n d New Y o r k b y m o r e than a generation. Recall also that i f c h i l d r e n were b o r n t o American-born p a r e n t s , t h e s e c h i l d r e n were c o u n t e d as n a t i v e s t o c k . The p o i n t o f o r i g i n o f t h e i r g r a n d p a r e n t s d i d n o t enter i n t o the equation. Looking a t the government's f i g u r e s f o r C l o u d County, 466 f o r e i g n - b o r n French This Canadians were r e p o r t e d f o r 1 9 0 0 . T h e s e i n d i v i d u a l s who are n o t included i n the government's ethn i c t a l l y , a c c o u n t f o r f u l l y one f o u r t h o f t h e Cloud County Franco-American population. Given t h a t the ancestors of these c i t i z e n s come f r o m C a n o d a b e t w e e n 1 8 5 0 a n d 1860, a n d t h a t t h e s e a n c e s t o r s w e r e p o r t o f a l a r g e r movement t o M i c h i g a n , M i n n e s o t a , Wisconsin, I n d i a n a , and Iowa, as w e l l a s I l l i n o i s , we m i g h t w e l l h a v e r e o son t o b e l i e v e t h a t t h e F r a n c o - A m e r i c a n element i s severely under-represented i n t h e g o v e r n m e n t ' s own e t h n i c t a l l y f o r 1900 M i g h t the f i g u r e f o r t h e Midwest (French C a n a d i a n b o r n as w e l l as F r e n c h - C o n a d i a n s t o c k ) a c t u a l l y be c l o s e r t o 370,000 t h a n t h e o f f i c i a l l y r e p o r t e d 275,000. My c u r i o s i t y i s u n d o u b t e d l y f u r t h e r aroused by t h e f a c t t h a t n o t o n l y was I b o r n a S e v i g n y b u t my m a t e r n a l g r e a t g r a n d m o t h e r was a l s o o n e . I n o t h e r w a r d s , I h o v e S e v i g n y s i n b o t h my f a t h e r ' s a n d m o t h e r ' s l i n e s as you c a n see f r o m my a n c e s t o r c h a r t s on p a g e s 8 8 a n d 8 9 . E a r l y l a s t year, I learned t h a t a m e e t i n g o f S e v i o n y s w o u l d be h e l d i n Fleurimont near Sherbrooke. I t s purpose was t o o r g a n i z e a f a m i l y a s s o c i a t i o n . N e e d l e s s t o s o y , I was e a g e r t o g o . As my s i s t e r , E l i z a b e t h D e m a r s , a n d I drove from Minnesota through Ontario t o Quebec, I t h o u g h t a b o u t f a m i l y a s s o c i a I knew t h a t t h e r e were a b o u t !25 tions. o f them i n Canada. I k n e w t o o t h a t some o f them have been a r o u n d f o r q u i t e a w h i l e , h a d many members a n d h e l d e l a b o r a t e r e unions. Our motto is the same as Quebec's: "Je me souviens" (I remember). The coat-ofarms is ringed by acorns. another symbol of genealogy. and circled by the words "American French Genealogical Society. 1979." The border represents the molten wax used to seal documents. Our coat-of-arms and seal were designed by our founder. Henri Leblond. They are registered with the Committee on Heraldry of the New England Historical and Genealogical Society in Boston. MA.
