With an intuitive understanding of the power of the arts, and of cultural diversity as the very essence of the human experience, his vision has remained tenacious and his organizing skills tireless. Selected by The London Free Press as one of his city’s 150 most influential individuals past & present, Alfredo continues to change the face of London - and the face of London continues to change Alfredo! Andy is an established leader in the cultural industries sector with knowledge of signature music events locally, nationally and internationally. Arriving from Manchester, England in 1982, Andy started his career as a Canadian recording artist, completing two albums for Sony Records with his band the Tenants. In 1994, Andy CoFounded and became Managing Director of North By Northeast Conferences Inc. (NXNE) based in Toronto. Over a period of 18 years he established the NXNE brand to be recognized world wide as Canada’s premier showcase event for the best new music. In April 2014, Andy accepted the position as Executive Director of ECMA, and re-located to Halifax, Nova Scotia. Ari began his work with Polydor/Atlas Records, in the early ‘90s. He then joined up with Capitol Records as a marketing representative. Working with major artists such as John Spencer, George Clinton, and Radiohead, Nisman built a strong working knowledge for marketing and promotion. But it was his work with younger bands that gave him more pleasure. He supported budding acts (at the time) such as Stir, Less Than Jake, and Jimmy Eat World during his stay there. Nisman transitioned into the booking world in 2001 when he built Degy Booking International, an international booking agency aimed at launching up-and-coming music acts. The company is now one of the largest providers of music to the N. American college market; booking well over 2000 shows a year. Bruce is President of Halifax based (MMII) Music Marketing International Inc. MMII offers domestic and international artist management, booking and marketing services. MMII also provides event organization and management, creates seminars and workshops for music & cultural industry professional development, cultural market research and consulting to cultural enterprises. MMII also produces the annual January/February Blues Meltdown series throughout the Maritimes, the Halifax Natal Day Bluesfest and this year produced a Canada Day family event in Quispamsis and a mid July Louisbourg Rocks concert at Fortress Louisbourg. Having cut her teeth as a publicist, with a client list that included Arcade Fire and Black Kids, Veitch has worked in the music business a decade as an artist manager, label rep, panel programmer, consultant and most recently with indie publisher, Third Side Music. Since joining TSM four years ago to head up licensing and consulting for games, ads and trailers in Los Angeles, she has worked on intensive projects with Rockstar Games, Electronic Arts, Apple, Disney, Nike, Chevy and Guinness. She works regularly with her roster of artists, which includes Amon Tobin, De Lux, Quantic, Young Fathers, and Dan Boeckner (Divine Fits/Operators/ Handsome Furs), to bring together unlikely pairings and create new music for theatrical and advertising campaigns and games. Cheryl studied classical percussion at McGill University in Montreal, where she was born and raised. She has toured Canada, U.S., and Europe with The Yiddish Theatre of Montreal. She spent years in New York City where she honed her skills of playing anything from Rock and Roll, Klezmer, to Celtic as well as Middle Eastern music. She now uses her style of percussion to enhance the music of such artists as Jonathan Edwards, Pat Wictor, Tracy Grammer and her group RUNA. Cheryl is also a songwriter and President of NERFA (Northeast Regional Folk Alliance). She has worked with Raymond Daveluy, organist at Saint-Joseph’s Oratory in Montreal as well as with Philippe Bélanger. She then concentrated her energy on her Ph.D. studies in Theology and wishes to resume her interpretation works as well as composing. JENNIFER CAMPBELL EXECUTIVE D IRECTOR SMALL H ALLS IN C Small Halls Inc. is a not for profit in Charlottetown PE; which among other projects produces the award winning “Festival of Small Halls”. The Festival of Small Halls is an eleven-day, traditional music, dance and storytelling festival held in June of each year. In 2014 the Festival of Small Halls presented 45 events, which were held in 40 venues across the Island. Having just celebrated his 15th annual 50th birthday party, John has been presenting concerts around Duncan BC in various local locations since 1989 as ‘Longevity John’s Musical Treats’. In 2003, he opened The Duncan Garage Showroom - a heralded venue for 65 in a theatre setting that showcases all styles of music, with over 2600 concerts in just over 10 years. J O YC E L I N AS S T . MU S IC S U PE RV IS O R AGORAPHONE MUSIC DIRECION Joyce worked at a small music publishing company in Los Angeles before moving to New York, where she received a Master of Arts in Music Business from NYU. Throughout her four years with Agoraphone, she has collaborated primarily on commercials, and has gained experience in independent film and TV. JUSTIN BRIDGEWATER KAT E B E R G MA N Justin currently represents a roster of around 40 artists in North America, as well as many in S. America, Australia, Japan and the Pacific Rim. His roster is diverse in genres with acts such as: Four Year Strong, Murder by Death, American Football, Killer Mike, Caspian, among others. Justin also has experience as a concert promoter, as he was the coordinator of MACRoCk (Mid-Atlantic College Radio Conference) while he earned his Bachelor’s degree at James Madison University, where he booked such acts as: Sufjan Stevens, of Montreal, Mates of State, Fugazi, Animal Collective, and many others. He also held the positions of: Business Manager, Assistant Program Director and DJ at the university’s 24hour, student-run radio station WXJM 88.7FM. Kate Bergman is an experienced Music Supervisor specializing in Television, Film, Trailers and Promo Campaigns. Kate has an extensive history as a musician herself, having spent the majority of her life studying the craft. While attending Berklee College of Music she focused on jazz and professional music with the goal of finding a career in the music industry that would both promote and protect artists. Chico left the studio to begin tour managing, and spent the next several years on the road handling day-to-day operations for major label artists. During that time he met Degy President/CEO, Ari Nisman, and in early 2014 joined the Degy Entertainment team. In 2012, Martin was awarded Booking Agent of The Year at the Scottish New Music Awards. Owner operator of The Carleton, one of Halifax’s top small venues, Mike is also a founder of the Halifax Urban Folk Festival (HUFF). He is also currently Vice President of the Mariposa Folk Foundation. He also wrote a weekly column for the Toronto Star for 32 years and is the President of the Stephen Leacock Associates, the group which administers the annual Stephen Leacock Medal for Humour award. For three years, Shawnté wrote and produced the iTunes Weekly Rewind, a podcast about the intersection of music and pop culture, and is now a contributor to Modern Hiker and Trunkworthy. Before moving to Los Angeles, she served as Managing Director of 3rd Ward, an arts organization in Brooklyn, acted as Studio Manager for noted photographer Craig Cameron Olsen, dabbled in music journalism and worked as a school social worker. She is excited by innovative ways to develop artists and audiences, cultivating those relationships and building communities. Stefania currently sits on the Board of CAPACOA (Canadian Arts Presenting Association). won audiences over with her larger-than-life stage presence and down-toearth charm. Growing up on everything from old-time country to folk, blues and soul, her music resonates. TARMO NORMAA DIRE C T O R E T MC Tarmo is a musician, teacher, organizer of different events focused on traditional music. He has graduated from Viljandi Culture Academy traditional music department with main instrument diatonic accordion. 2006-2013 he worked as a program director in Estonian Traditional Music Centre finding perfomers for numerous festivals and concerts all over Estonia. Since the end of 2013 he is the director of the same organisation. ETMC teaches, promotes, and preserves Estonian traditional music. The Center established the non-formal educational centre August Pulst School and the Traditional Music Center Library and concert venue in Viljandi. It also organizes one of the biggest festivals in Estonia Viljandi Folk Music festival. AMY & RACHEL BECK PEI’s folk-singing sisters quickly ascended to the national stage when they were named national finalists in the 2013 CBC Searchlight Contest. Since, the duo has made up for lost time by releasing their wellreceived studio debut and sharing their sweet harmonies with ardent audiences throughout the Maritimes. ASHLEY CONDON Raised between two potato fields on Prince Edward Island, Ashley Condon is the grandchild of Bill Leblanc, a Canadian country pioneer who once spent the night in jail with Hank Snow. Like pecan pie – sweet and nutty – Ashley has CATHERINE MACLELLAN Catherine is a songwriter and international touring musician who is set to release her much anticipated fifth record, The Raven’s Sun, August 2014. Having released four records with legendary Canadian label, True North Records, she has toured extensively across North America, Europe and the UK which has earned her a strong fan base worldwide. He is a consummate musician/songwriter and currently seeks expanded distribution & profile of his music. Skydiggers guitarist, Josh Finlayson, produced his most recent release, Hazy Sunshine that blends pop, soul, rock and roll and classic Americana. DEATH VALLEY DRIVER Ever have your door kicked in by five thugs collecting on a debt? Hopefully you haven’t but the sound of Death Valley Driver would be the soundtrack. The five-piece mixes the classic hard rock of AC/DC, the sludge of Black Sabbath, and the urgency of Motorhead into a Molotov cocktail of metal. Dylan Menzie is an up and coming artist from Belle River, PEI. The indie rocker’s love for his home on the east coast is shown in his writing and style. Quickly gaining a reputation as a captivating entertainer his debut EP “Heather Avenue” was released on October 22nd, 2013. 12 DENNIS ELLSWORTH Dennis Ellsworth is a prolific songwriter characterized by a JO R DA N CA ME R O N KI Z Z Y CR AW FO R D Jordan has performed and showcased across the maritimes, received 6 Music PEI award nominations and a nomination for Folk Album Of The Year at the 2012 ECMAs. His newest album, “Your History” was released in 2013. A Welsh speaker with Bajan heritage, seventeen year old Kizzy Crawford’s solo career began just two years ago. In that time, Kizzy has developed an increasing sophistication to her songwriting and performance, this is complimented by her soaring voice that boasts both range and charisma. D YL AN M E N Z I E CO Y OTE Coyote is a progressive pop-rock band hailing from Charlottetown, PEI. Often described as a ‘wall of sound’, Coyote features a good mix of acoustic and electric With a slight bend of his knee, Gordie MacKeeman launches into a song. Guided by the sharp cuts of his fiddle, his famous crazy legs shake and twist with a laughing regard for physics. The whole time, his Rhythm Boys deliver a surefooted roots instrumentation to accompany the spectacle. It’s a joyful sight that divides the line between the band and the audience. GORDIE MACKEEMAN I R I S H M YT H E N Born and raised in Ireland, Irish now lives in Maritime Canada. She has played across Europe, Australia, Middle East and the UK. Her North American performances include Stan Rogers Folk Festival, ECMW, FAI & Mariposa. Mythen’s second Canadian album “Open Here” was nominated for Roots Album of the Year ECMA 2012. She is a singer/songwriter from Belfast PE and was the 2011 recipient of the Lynn Grishko Memorial award from Music PEI as the most promising female artist. Taking from as many different influences as possible to create one very diverse, and versatile sound. 13 SHOW C AS IN G A RT I S T S MAZ O’CONNOR In 2013 she was nominated for the BBC Folk Awards Horizon Award and selected for a creative fellowship with the English Folk Dance and Song Society at London’s Cecil Sharp House, funded by the BBC Performing Arts Fund. She sings both traditional folk songs and her own compositions, and accompanies her uniquely pure voice with guitar, shruti box (an idea she “nicked” off fellow folk artist Karine Polwart), piano and harmonium. MEAGHAN BLANCHARD Meaghan Blanchard is a singer/songwriter from Hunter River PEI. She draws a lot of her 14 inspiration for performing and songwriting from her grandparents and the memories of the Saturday night dances at the community hall where she got to hear them play. The latest album “She’s Gonna Fly” was released in September 2013 and brought Meaghan her second ECMA in April 2014 along with two Music PEI awards. Whether fronting his band or performing solo, Mitch brings his blend of folk, tradional and rock to the 150 plus songs he has composed. A weaver of tales, Schurman’s live performances are spellbinding. Paper Lions’ indie rock shines with sunny melodies, clear-voiced harmonies, and clanging guitars. With over 4M views of YouTube video “Travelling”, their latest single My Friend has spent 24 consecutive weeks on Canada’s Alternative Rock chart. As frontman of his Americana group, Saddle River String Band, Mike won ECMA & PEI Music Awards, & his song ‘Bye Bye PEI’ was featured in the stage production of ‘Come AllYe’. Mike has appeared on many stages including The Harvest Jazz & Blues Fest, Stan Rogers Folk Fest, Dutch Mason Blues Fest, The Indian River Festival & many more. NUDIE An Island sensation for years, Nudie has toured long and far and played in venues of all sizes across North America. He plays his music the way Hank Williams would have liked it: great songwriting, minimal instrumentation, a strong voice and an everyman attitude. R AC O O N BAN D I T Racoon Bandit has released two independent albums, with 2011’s Into the Hills turning heads across the country and several Music PEI awards. The group is now hard at work on their third fulllength, expected to be released by the end of 2014. T E R E S A DO YLE Teresa Doyle is a vocal explorer with 11 CDs to her credit. She sings Gaelic, jazz, folk, Celtic, swing and latin music. She appears with her son, multi-instrumentalist Patrick Bunston performing music from her highly acclaimed new release, Song Road produced by Jaron Freeman-Fox. TIM CHAISSON Since the release of Tim Chaisson’s acclaimed album The Other Side in 2012 via Bumstead Productions, Chaisson has ventured across the globe performing to everexpanding audiences. He’s amassed his share of awards including the 2014 & 2012 MusicPEI Touring Artist Of The Year and 2013 East Coast Music Award Best Roots Solo Recording Award. 15 Dear Showcase PEI Delegates, Welcome to the 7th annual Showcase PEI.
