Norman Poulter lived life fuller than most of us, worked hard, raced even harder and then showed us how to party hard as well. Sadly was only a youthful 64 with January 31st of every year a special day for him (his birthday) Norman liked speed; he in fact liked it a lot! Unfortunately two of the entries never made it to the start, Ronel broke her Porsche on Friday and the other was Ferdi van Niekerk (snr) Porsche 356 entered and decided to do ‘little giants’ instead. There was a nice mix of entrants ranging from the stalwarts to some of the faces we have not seen in a while, like Shannon Winterstein (Renault Alpine) and Johnny Pienaar (Lotus Elite) and even a new-comer. Race 1 had only 17 starters as 2 cars did not make it to the grid, one being Mark Stewart (Capri) who broke a gearbox and the other was Glenn Crick (Mercedes). Meredith Willis’s Escort broke down on the grid with a loose distributor making it three non-starters. The rest of us set off to catch ‘pole’ man John Martin (DKW) who set off 2 minutes 20 seconds ahead of the second man, Brendan 3 Tracey in the 68 MGBGT. I set off 12th on 3:24 and the new guy, David Leyshon in his newly acquired VW Scirocco was last off the grid on 3:53. Race 1 Results saw Johnny Pienaar (Lotus elite) in 1st spot, Continued overleaf Marque Cars - My Day at the Centenary Car ShowKrugersdorp by Kevin Taylor and Ol’Blue Racing Capri me (Ol’Blue racing Capri) in 2nd place and Deon Hattingh (Scirocco) in 3rd place with one breakout being Andre Reynecke (Porsche 928) Heat 2 again saw 17 starters with Mark Stewart having replaced the Gearbox and on the grid as was Glenn Crick but 3 other cars did not start race 2, Willie Grobler (Lotus), Fritz Kleynhans (Porsche 911) and Roger Houston (MGB) Race 2 Results saw 1st spot going to Glenn Crick (Mercedes) followed by Meredith Willis (Escort) and 3rd going to John Martin (DKW). As usual there were no Break-outs in race 2. Overall results for the day were 1st to Deon Hattingh (Scirocco), 2nd Johnny Pienaar (Lotus Elite), 3rd to Paul Manegold (Alfa), 4th to John Martin (DKW) and 5th spot to Michelle Perry (Escort). The 2012 Championship so far is a very close with 2 of us tie in the top spot. 1st Kevin Taylor 94 Paul Manegold 94 2nd John Martin 88 3rd Michelle Perry 84 As usual it was a gr8 day at the track… see you there on the 21st July for Round 5 at Zwartkops Raceway. Now of course Neal will have to work hard to hold pole as he will receive some stiff competition from the recent additions to the Heavenly chariot race with other historic racers Norman Poulter and Gerry Spaans. However the editor would like to apologise to the Wetton family for placing the incorrect car together with Neal’s photo in last months Historic Times. Here now is the correct picture along with the ever smiling Neal with his family. 7 FROM THE CHAIR The drought is over and good racing is once again the order of the day. Whilst I was personally not on track, I had the time to enjoy some excellent racing and even better dices. For me personally, the endurance race is the best event of the day and I stayed to the very end, braving a dose of ‘flu that has been doing its best to keep me out of action. The Zwartkops race weekend was marred by the deaths of two of our respected and much loved colleagues, namely Norman Poulter and Jerry Spaans. They succumbed to their illness and both will be sadly missed, but their memories will go on for a very long time to come. Coupled to that, Barry Scott’s friend, who spent the day with him at the track, was murdered at his home upon his return from the track. In that respect, it was surely a black weekend. 8 Why were Mike and I not on track? We committed the sin of leaving everything till the last minute. It was decided to swap engines in the Merc as the present one is in its second season, and is campaigning both the sprint events as well as the endurance races. We have had an engine on the sand for more than 6 months now. It belongs to Mike’s car which dropped a valve at Zoc about a year ago, and we haven’t been in a position to run both cars, so the engine has been sitting there doing nothing but use up valuable space in the garage. So off we went to Midvaal to run it in. Mike was doing the driving and I was merely looking on, and all seemed to be good. Eight laps later, when Mike slowed to change down, the engine stopped. There was no oil feed through the replacement cylinder head, and both cams did a quick spin weld job inside the cam box. Thank goodness the cam chain did not break, so the damage is minimal, but the cams and cam box are now scrap metal. We will be ready for Midvaal, that’s guaranteed. Marian is recovering quickly from her op, and will soon be back with me at track side and noggin nights. Thanks to all for the well wishes. They truly are appreciated. We realise it is just after the sun sets on our Midvaal event, but this way you can just leave your car on your trailers and even leave the trophies in your tow car also to proudly display them with your car at the Show n Shine. We have had this opportunity for the past two years and it is an excellent way to promote our club and expand our influence. This year I have taken the liberty of getting permission from the centre to allow us to run an Auto-Jumble at the same time. So if you like we can operate our own swap meet in the warm sunshine next to our cars on the lawns of the Brightwater Commons. My restaurant will be offering a meal at a considerable discount for members and their supporters so come along to the Commons and have a chilled and relaxed day with your buddies while at the same time honouring our late friend Norman. I have also proposed that we name this Show n Shine event the Norman Poulter Historic Racing Car Show n Shine Day in his honour. So in order for us to make this a memorable event please inform Terence Tracey the organiser which car you will be bringing so that the cards can be grouped as aesthetically as possible. Further, an opportunity for anyone to contribute financially towards Norman’s widow will be set at the event. So this year we ask all to make this a wonderful day out with your race machine and make new friends while catching up with old pals Terence on 083 601 7511 011 886 9988 [email protected] You may bring your cars any time from Saturday evening and until Sunday morning. Parking area for your tow cars and trailers will be set aside with security. Cars may be collected on Sunday from 17h30 or left overnight if necessary. Special drip trays will be made available for all Fords to save the environment from oil contamination!!! Just Kidding guys!! Norman was later attracted to Historic racing and introduced a fine Peace sign Cortina with a twin cam power plant. F.O.R.D. or First On Race Day never materialized for Norman in the shape of this marque, he had trouble with it from day one. At a testing session with his son Leroy, the car caught a light at the Midvaal track and went up in flames before their very eyes. Since it was not a race day, there were not umpteen extinguishers around to help them with the blaze. Bye bye First On Race Day Along come his Alfa. This time he was more successful and this he campaigned in Castrol Clubman’s until he sold it off to bloke in the Cape and he changed horses yet again, this time to a Golf which he raced in Clubman’s as well as Wesbank modifieds. Trophies galore again and a number of championships as well was his reward in the Vee Dub. Back to Historics this time with his famous bullet-proof Datsun SSS. It was not very long until he bore the number 1 proudly on his door in spite of stiff competition from a whole myriad of serious challengers including his young brother Alan in the Swedish mean machine (Amazon 122) I recently asked Alan, what was Norman’s biggest fear and he had a very simple answer; “Norman was afraid of NOWTHING”! “No, in fact, he was scared of something…. And that was he was scared of NOT WINNING” Well that about sums up the philosophy of a great guy who was 19 our friend, a superb brother, and exemplary father, a devoted husband and a man who has left a gaping void in our midst. What makes it so special is that this +4 Super Sport is the sister car to TOK258, the Morgan which won the 2L class at Le Mans in 1962. Chris Lawrence and Richard Shepherd–Barron averaged 94 mph, recorded a top speed of 130 mph and a highest lap average of 110 mph. You might notice that Chris Clarke’s current racing Moggie is registered TOK258 in honour of the Le Mans victory car. XRX1 too was entered and raced in the same race but did not finish. Perhaps the most remarkable feature of the Morgan win was that the cars were driven from the UK to Le Mans for the race – AND DRIVEN HOME AFTERWARDS! Steve successfully raced the car here with a 2.5L V8 Daimler motor fitted and took it back to the UK when he went back some years ago. I was lucky enough to meet Steve at a Morgan event at Prescott Hillclimb on one of my sorties to the UK where he took me up the hill with much growling and laying down of rubber all the way up. There was no left hand seat so I wedged myself in, braced myself with legs forward, arms against the roll-bar – and prayed – hard! A magic run. Slated as a “demo” run…I think Steve misunderstood the concept. I think he got FTD. The car was then sold, had the 2.2L Massey Fergusson/Triumph motor replaced and reregistered XRX1. The car is still highly revered by Morganisti around the world. Regards, Terry M. Developed by Lola Cars in 1965 in Great Britain. Early success came when Walt Hansgen won the Monterey Grand Prix, at Laguna Seca, on October 17, 1965, driving John Mecom's Lola T70-Ford.[1] In 1966, the hot setup for the Can-Am was a T70 Chevrolet. Winning five of six races during the year. John Surtees was the champion and Dan Gurney drove the only Ford powered car ever to win a Can -Am race. In 1967, no one could compete with the new M6 McLaren. The T70 was quite popular, with more than 100 examples of the vehicle being built in 3 versions. The first version, besides the original factory car, was the openroofed Mk II, joined by the Coupé-version Mk III, and a slightly updated version, the Mk IIIB. The T70 was replaced in the Can-Am by the lighter Lola T160.. When the FIA changed the rules for sports car racing that came into effect for 1968, limiting the engine size of prototypes to 3 liters, if at least 50 were made, sportscars with up to 5000cc engines were allowed. This rule allowed the The T70 was first produced in open-top "spyder" configuration. popular yet outdated Ford GT40 and Lola T70s to continue racing. The Fords won Le Mans again in '68 and '69, while the T70's only big endurance win came in the 1969 24 Hours of Daytona where they finished 1 and 2. The winning car was the Sunoco Lola T70Chevrolet of Mark Donohue and Chuck Parsons.[2] When 28 the minimum number was lowered to 25 for 1969, the more modern Porsche 917 and Ferrari 512 were homologated (sanctioned), and outran the older Lolas and Fords. The T70 was first produced in open-top "spyder" configuration. LOLA T70 Spyder Chevrolet powered coupes tended to suffer reliability problems when racing in Europe, in part due to the grade of fuel allowed. When forced to run on commercially available "pump fuel", with a lower octane rating than the "Avgas" permitted under American rules, engine failures were common. In modern historic racing these engines show much improved reliability due to a number of factors: in modern historic racing they use parts unavailable in the '60's, and fuel quality is better than the historically poor fuel supplied by the ACO. An Aston Martin powered coupe was entered by Lola for Le Mans in 1967, Even with drivers such as John Surtees, the T70 Aston Martin was a disaster. The Aston Martin V8 engine failed after short runs. The lack of development was attributed to a lack of funds. During the filming of Steve McQueen's "Le Mans", Lola chassis' were sacrificed, disguised with bodywork from the 917 and 512 that starred in the film. A T70 coupe also appears as a car of the future in George Lucas' first commercial film, THX-1138. Nowadays, T70's are still driven in classic car events like the Classic Endurance Racing series. May they rest in peace along with Neal Wetton. Although there was excitement around there was some somberness. When I got to the track on Saturday morning, I found all the parking spots had been taken up and went and parked next to the shed where I had parked the previous race. While unpacking, Cloete jnr and snr also pitched along with Jaco Greyling with his Anglia. I was feeling slightly optimistic as I had found a few extra donkeys by just changing the rear part of the exhaust courtesy of Cloete Jnr who had also dyno’ed the car for me. In the F to H field the Quickest were the cousins Vos with Carel on pole followed by Anton then came Collier,Willis,Braun,Lombard,Cloete snr,Kean,Manegold,Van Nieuwenhuizen jnr,Lindenberg jnr,Ilani Vonk,Mostert jnr,Mae,Verwey s n r , G r a n t , V e r w e y jnr,Young ,Jacobs,Visser,Greenslade,Is abel Raaths,Lourens Verwey, van der Walt,Carkisle Kitz,Juan,Stacey,Mostert snr,Botes jnr,Stewart,Greyling with a mysterious misfire,de Ru,Malan and van Schalkwyk. Braun broke his umpteenth clutch and with the help that was given could unfortunately not start along with Grant, and Ed Botes. The start had the field slightly stretched and going into turn Cloete snr, ran wide and Lombard passed him on the inside only to be outdragged down the straight. Getting into the turn 4 –the sweep at the end of the straight, Cloete lost it in front of Lombard who in turn aimed for the right, found the red bug aiming there provisionally, and Lombard then losing it in turn when backing off. At this stage everybody is really on the boil and Lombard luckily got the car off the circuit before there was any contact. The motor died in the process and refused to fire, the blue bug eventually getting going at the very end of the field, even way behind the While medical car 31st position. Lombard was trying to carve his way towards the front, Cloete was doing the same and the dog fights behind the front lot were warming up. Collier moved to the front whilst dicing with Carel and Anton was giving his all to stay with Shaun until Cloete joined them. Jaco also worked towards the front with the car firing on all 4 cylinders whilst behind them Willis, Kean and Paige were out diving and outcornering each other. The family Verwey had their hands full with Mae and Jacobs while being eagle eyed by Ilani, Mostet jnr and I s a bel .Greenslade in the meantime pulled a slight gap on Lourens who in turn had a major gap on Stacey and Carlisle –Kitz with Stewart not too far distant. Van der Walt in the meantime got ahead of newcomer Malan and Danie and de Ru. Botes jnr retired after 3 laps as did Visser and Young –breaking clutch as well and Mosssie retired after 4 laps. The final order was Collier from Carel, Cloete snr, van Nieuwenhuizen jnr,Anton,Greyling,Paige pipping Kean,Willis ,Manegold,Verwey Snr also pipping Jacobs,Mae,Verwey j n r , I l a n i , M o s t e r t jnr,Isabel,LombardGreenslade,Lourens, Stacey,Carlisl-Kitz,Stewart,van Der Walt,Malan,Danie and de Ru-the Prefect looking meaner and more menacing with it having been lowered some more. The second heat had everybody starting in their previous heat’s finishing positions as per our rules. Lombard knew that he had his work cut out for him to try and get past as many as possible from the 18th position as the pack in front of him were some of the quicker cars in the lower class and some from his own class. Collier timed the start perfectly and got going when the lights turned off. Both the Vos guys had good starts and put Cloete in their sights along with van Nieuwenhuizen and Willis .Kean had some ideas of his own and made sure that everybody took note by mixing it up with this bunch. Lombard in the meantime found when coming into the straight for the first time the class G contingent totally blocking the track all running 3 abreast fighting for position. Grant also had his work cut out as he had not done the first heat. Greyling retired after 1 lap when his car just cut out at the top of the hill. Newcomer Malan in his R10 had his ears closing up and not listening to the rev counter, over-revved it and dropped some valves. On this fifth lap Juan in his Datty though he had a good run and promptly went from 3 rd to 2nd-the telltale on the revcounter showing 10 400 afterwards. I am sure there are more bits in that motor than in some mongrel dogs. In the A to E qualifying on pole was Willie in his Camaro ,followed by Raaths,Cavalieri,Phil Pantazis,Robby Smith,Martin Botha in the process breaking class E and will be moved straight b a c k t o D , V a n Vuuren,Reyneke,Ubsdell,de Waal,Schmidt,Nortman,Smidt,Clarke,Clo ete jnr,nr 8?,Ellison,Bennet,Vonk jnr,Wentzel, van Nieuwenhuizen snr,Francois,Ladner,Theo-who broke the engine into turn one and the compartment then apparently caugh t fire,Green, newcomer,Djurk Venter-Capri Perana, nrs 1442 ,42 ,Div Hoffman, Hattingh jnr and Louw v/d Westhuizen. Somewhere along the line van Nieuwenhuizen jnr got his Escort very sideways in turn 4 only to be donged by Cloete in the process with the Escort suffering some body damage ,slowly cutting the right front tyre. The Beetle also had some damage in the oil cooler in the nose and was slowly leaking oil. The Escort eventually retiring after 8 laps when the wheel popped. show all how well his car can actually run and tried to stay with this front lot. Behind this lot a war was being waged between the Chev of Reyneke, the Alfa of de Waal ,the Bug of Cloete jnr and the Fords of Ubsdell, Deon, Vonk jnr, Clarke and Bennet. Louw was slowly creeping up after passing van Nieuwenhuizen snr and Wentzel in the 2002 tii who had some misfire issues. Hattingh with problems ahead of Francois who was chucking his Sunny around being on the edge all the time as usual. Djurk was settling in with his Perana and Div was on his own ahead of Green. Phil had Smith on his toes all the time giving the latter no time to relax and Clarke was pushing Vonk and van Vuuren. Ladner retired after 2 laps when his car went off song as did Schmidt. Once the main pack had been cleared, Lombard got to the dicing duo of Paige and Marco and passed both going through turn 3 just putting the right wheels in the dirt. This duo then decided that they would stick to the rear of the bug and gave chase. The final result was Collier from Anton, Cloete snr,Carel,Kean-breaking class in the process,Willis,Lombard,Marco who eventually got past Paige when it mattered,Paige,Isabel,Marius,Mostert Cindy pulled in with the Gordini’s engine not well and non started, Smidt in the Nissan dropped some valves and was waiting for a replacement head, Nortman also broke and I believe Ellison lunched his engine in another category race. The start was nice and clean with Hepburn leaving black lines on the start straight with Cavalieri not far behind followed by Raaths, Robby Smith, Cilliers and Phil. Martin was on a mission to 33 With the start of the second heat all and sundry got a huge wakeup call when Cavalieri spun the ex Viana 745 coming down the hill ,the spin being caused by a flat rear tyre. Luckily nobody hit him although I’m sure there must have been all colours of the rainbow in the underwear of most. It also split the field slightly with some work to do for most. Deon decided that his Ford could emulate the Datty of Juan and he was revving towards 10 000 trying to catch and stay with Botha. Clarke and Cloete were going through some turns side by side and Cloete this time did not need off-road tyres like at Kyalami when he had to hit the dirt in avoidance driving. Jimbo was pushing them hard. Phil again had the bit between the teeth keeping Smith honest and Louw got ahead of the non female entertainment Escort train of Vonk jnr, Ubsdell Continued on page 34 Zwarties 21 July 2012 UNBIASED PERSONALLY OPINIATED TEXT BY HARRY LOMBARD and van Nieuwenhuizen snr .Wentzel stayed with the Fords in front of him whilst pulling a gap on Francois who was giving the Perana carrots with Div a slight distance behind them. On the last lap on the top of the hill something in Jimbo’s car broke-either the ‘box, clutch or diff and all his hard work was neutralized to an extent. I think van Vuuren’s 10k rpm motor put a slight hole in the side and also dented his championship. the 22 years that I have now been racing, there are not very many photos of where I have been working with my fellow competitors on their cars, my own and many such other events. I am now doing things At this stage of the game Kean has a slight lead although it must be remembered that at the end of the year 2 heats need to be ‘scrapped’ as per the rules. There are only 3 races left and hopefully all will go well for all. I see in February 2013 there is a 6 hour race in the offing which could just bode well for the future of the sport. Jerry and Norman were both laid to rest in the week after the race. May their memories with us last forever and may they rest in peace.
