HEALTH, WELLNESS, and FITNESS
T
he Mendocino Coast is a center point for holistic, natural, and sustainable lifestyles in
northern California. Recently recommended in the New York Times Sunday Travel
section as Number 3 on a list of best places in the world to visit, the Mendocino Coast
is naturally equipped to help you rejuvenate and heal your body, mind, and spirit. We
cater to healthy eating, with locally harvested and raised produce and meats available
through farmers’ markets and health food stores, or through consultations with a nutrition specialist to personalize food and supplement programs. We boast a raw food café
and world-renowned raw food culinary arts program.
What better place to get your grounding than on the beach, or hiking through our
redwood forests. If you prefer indoor activities, why not try out a Pilates class, yoga,
T’ai Chi, or meditation. To round out your active day, treat yourself to a therapeutic
massage, for healing and relaxation, or a spa treatment. There are many forms of body
work available here, including Ashiatsu barefoot massage, Bowen therapy, hot stone massage, Reiki, acupuncture and acupressure, and chiropractic.
During the past ten years, the coast has become an
international destination for rest, relaxation, recreation,
and healing. Both traditional and alternative medicines and
therapies are available here. With a district hospital that now

FILMS MADE in MENDOCINO
F
ilmmakers have had a love affair with Mendocino County for more than 100 years,
beginning in 1904 with Caspar Lumber Company’s The Sequoia Sempervirens
(Redwoods). The natural beauty, the picturesque harbors, and the charming salt-box,
Craftsman, and Victorian homes of Mendocino County have lured filmmakers here
for the same reason vacationers make Mendocino County their destination. Beginning
with silent movies that portrayed the perils of logging life to a television series filmed
here because “the Mendocino Coast looks so much like the New England coast,” to
movies made in the village of Mendocino because it evokes the feeling of a bygone era.

FORT BRAGG
S
urrounded by the spectacular natural beauty of northern
California’s redwood forests and the Pacific Ocean, Fort
Bragg is an ideal destination for both visitors and small
businesses. Located in Mendocino County, this is the largest
town on the scenic coast between San Francisco and Eureka.
This city, with its historic downtown, offers a unique blend
of natural resources, recreation, and scenery.
Fort Bragg, once a booming logging town, is now a hub
for state parks and reserves and is an official Gateway to the
California Coastal National Monument.
H e r e ’s h o w t h e
Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Department of the Interior, describes
the Monument:

Waves explode onto offshore rocks, spraying whitewater into the air.
Sea lions bark as they “haul out” of the surf onto the rocks, and a
whirlwind of birds fly above. These amazing rocks and small islands
are part of the California Coastal National Monument, a spectacular
interplay of land and sea.

The area’s Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens is one of only a few such gardens
in the continental United States fronting directly on an ocean. The famous Skunk
Train takes visitors from Fort Bragg or Willits on a route through the redwoods
that is accessible only by railroad.
Those looking for special adventures will find that Fort Bragg’s location offers
an array of appealing activities including whale watching, sport fishing, kayaking,
and beachcombing, along with bird-watching, horseback riding, hiking and biking.
Art galleries showcase local artists, and craftspeople and antique shops offer unexpected finds.

FORT BRAGG
Couples know that the town, with its wide variety of venues, is the perfect place
to have a romantic wedding and honeymoon.
In the early 20th century, Fort Bragg residents threw their household garbage—glass, bottles, appliances, and even vehicles—over the cliffs above what
is Glass Beach, now part of MacKerricher State Park. The land was owned at
that time by the Union Lumber Company and locals referred to the spot as “The
Dump.” Clean-up of the larger metallic waste occurred in the late 2000s, and you
can still see remnants of water-washed broken glass in the pocket beaches at the
end of Elm Street. Please take only photographs; leave the glass for all to enjoy.
Fort Bragg’s Guest House Museum, built in 1892, is home to the Fort
Bragg-Mendocino Coast Historical Society. The Society conducts history walks
downtown during summer, and is the site of the annual Christmas Tree lighting
in the winter.

MENDOCINO
M
endocino is situated on a peninsula of land, surrounded on three sides by
picturesque, wildflower-covered bluffs and crashing surf. Established
in the 1850s as a logging town, this seaside community is listed on the
National Register of Historic Places as a National Historic Preservation
District. Many of the New England-style Victorians built here around
the turn of the 20th century have been lovingly restored into romantic
bed-and-breakfast inns, world class restaurants, and quaint shops.
A brochure to guide you on a walking tour of historic houses is
available at the Ford House on Main Street, also the visitor center
for Mendocino Headlands State Park. The walking guide may also be
obtained at the Kelley House Museum on Albion Street or the Mendocino
Coast Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center in Fort Bragg.

soon became a mecca for “back-to-the-landers,” young people
who wanted out of cities and into a more rural, agrarian lifestyle. This scenic
coastline continues to attract artists, writers, photographers, and anyone
seeking inspiration from the natural beauty here.
The rich diversity of our population shines most brightly on the 4th of
July. Every year, locals and guests alike line the streets of town three to five

Filming has been going on in the village of Mendocino since the silent film
era. During your visit, you might recognize several locations used for the mid1980s television series, “Murder, She Wrote,” starring Angela Lansbury.
Below town, Big River Beach is a popular spot for walking, surfing, beach
volleyball, and picknicking. It’s a great place to view or photograph our spectacular sunsets. A state park trail heads east along Big River and is popular for
watching wildlife, walking, running, and riding bicycles and horses. You can
also paddle upriver for several miles in a kayak or canoe.
Just north of Mendocino is Point Cabrillo Light Station State Historic
Park with a working lighthouse, marine exhibit, gift shop and two museums.

East of Mendocino, on Comptche-Ukiah Road, you will find
Montgomery Woods State Reserve, home to three of the tallest redwoods on the planet! The 1,142-acre preserve contains both coast
and Sierra redwoods, as well as an excellent three-mile-long hike.
One of the most frequently asked questions in Mendocino
is about the statue on top of the Masonic Lodge building (now
also housing a bank). Titled “Father Time and the Maiden,” the
statue was carved from a single piece of virgin redwood by Erick
Albertson during the 1860s. The statuary consists of images drawn
from mythology, all symbolizing a particular rite of passage within
the Masonic Order. It took Albertson seven years to complete both
the building and statue.

ust two miles south of Mendocino, Little River offers an award-winning
nine-hole golf course with ocean views, plus world-class inns and
restaurants along a short stretch of Highway 1. Little River is also
home to Van Damme State Park which includes one of only a handful
of pygmy forests in the entire world, as well as a sandy beach that serves
as a launching point for abalone divers and sea kayakers.
A few miles south, the village of Albion has a unique personality, a
place with its own history and community. A portion of the community
is known locally as “the Albion Nation.”
In addition to a passionate community, there is a market, hardware
store, volunteer fire department, post office, a weekly farmer’s market,
some great restaurants, a cliffside inn, a llama ranch, and a small
commercial fishing operation at the mouth of the Albion River, which
also offers camping facilities,

he Mendocino Coast south of the Navarro River offers rich and diverse scenery,
from pastureland east of the highway to some of the most spectacular coastline
in the county.
Elk is the best-kept secret on the Mendocino Coast. In a few short blocks
are inns, restaurants, a community center and post office, shops, a history
museum, state park and spectacular sea stacks with views that rival California’s
Big Sur coast. Elk is known for its romance, and many couples choose to hold
their wedding here.
Point Arena’s historic 115-foot tall Point Arena Lighthouse is adjacent to
the Stornetta Public Lands, which allows access to more than 12 coastal miles of
public lands through diverse habitat including coastal bluffs and sandy beaches.

ANDERSON VALLEY
A
nderson Valley provides a beautiful setting with lush greenery that is ideal for wineries and farming. The drive in
and through the valley is one of the most breathtaking
in California, moving from rolling, oak-covered hills in the
east, to pastureland, vineyards and orchards in the valley
proper, and culminating in towering redwoods at the west
end, then opening out to the vast Pacific Ocean.
Anderson Valley offers a chance to experience some
extraordinary cuisine. There is excellent lamb and grain-fed
beef, sometimes even local wild game like venison, quail or
wild turkey. There are more than a dozen varieties of apples
still grown here, as well as pears, olives, grapes, and wild
mushrooms. And, of course, a wide variety of beverages are
created here, from
delicious beers and

artisan winery,
located in the
Anderson Valley.
The valley is sparsely populated on mostly large parcels with
Boonville being the center of the valley in activity and population.
The valley is filled with rolling hills, shaded with oak and madrone
trees, as well as apple orchards, vineyards, and colorful wildflowers. Some 1,000 acres of wine grapes are produced in the area and
many local wineries with tasting rooms are found along Highway
128. According to Food & Wine magazine, ‘Anderson Valley may be
one of the best places in the country to grow Pinot Noir.’ (Source:
