Introduction
With advanced technology evolves, people are now living a better life and enjoying
all IT convenience at ease. However, all comforts come at certain costs. In recent
years, the soaring energy costs have significantly increased the operating expenses of
corporations. Take in to consideration of the raising electricity costs, it had increased
9.3% in 2006, which is the largest one-year jump since 19811. With depleting natural
resources derived from energy-consuming actions, behaviour changes are essential
to be made from not only an economical view in saving costs but a more moral
concern of ensuring sustainability for future generations.
As the issue of energy-saving is increasingly shaping consumer behaviour in today’s
highly competitive business environment, consumers nowadays are tend to weigh
more on products’ “Green Performance” when making buying decision, which has
given rise to the trend of “Green IT” products. In today’s IT marketplace, a significant
numbers of consumers are considering more on lifetime energy efficiency over actual
cost when purchasing between competing products, and this has been further
evidenced by the result as below2:

Over 50% of consumers consider IT vendors' "Greenness" when selecting a
supplier.
One-third of consumers already consider it "important" to "very important"
that IT suppliers have green offerings.
Almost 80% of executives say that Green IT is growing in importance for their
organization.
The #1 driver for Green IT adoption is economic - to reduce operational costs.
Our Commitment to the Environment
As a world-leading UPS manufacturer, CyberPower has not only made it
dream-come-true for businesses and individuals implementing Green IT principles
but adopted green practices throughout the operation, including the recently
granted ENERGY STAR qualification, certification of CEC, full compliance to the
Restriction on Hazardous Substances (RoHS), accordance with Waste Electrical and
Electronic Equipment (WEEE) protocols as well as receiving ISO 14001 and IECQ
QC080000 certificate for internal management of environmental policies and
hazardous substance restrictions.

Along with the “Green Commitment” throughout the business, CyberPower is
dedicated to the development of efficient GreenPower UPS™ Energy-Saving
Technology, while ensures customers an unprecedented selection of high-quality,
feature-rich and reliable power protection products.
GreenPower UPS™ Technology
Power equipment plays an important role in the power consumption of data centres.
It is reported that averagely the UPS consumes 18% of the electricity in data centres3.
Hence the reduction in power consumption of UPS equipment will considerably
reflect in lower electricity cost for corporate, which has lead to the rise of
GreenPower UPS™ Technology.
The GreenPower UPS™ Technology features with the advanced bypass circuit design
which could reduce UPS energy costs by up to 75% compared to conventional models.
It efficiently bypasses the transformer when utility power is normal. As utility power
is normal over 88% of the time, the GreenPower UPS™ operates primarily in its
cost-reducing bypass mode. As a result, users will enjoy significant energy cost
savings with the adoption of GreenPower UPS™ Technology.

UPS Topology Comparison
The most common topology in use for UPS equipment is Online Double-Conversion
and Line-Interactive UPS for power range from 750VA to 6KVA. Among all UPS with
different topology, the Line-Interactive models are especially widely adapted thanks
to its better efficiency4 with reliability.
Line-Interactive Topology
With Line-Interactive models, the power consumption will be lower and less heat
generated when comparing to Online Double-Conversion UPS. In addition, the
reliability of Line-Interactive models is superior due to simplifier structure and fewer
components are required.
Figure 1 Line-Interactive Topology (Based on IEC 62040-3)
According to statistics5, the average power outage time is about 100 minutes per year,
thus batteries are fully charged most of the life time. However, the transformer
remains connected to the utility regardless of the UPS status in line-interactive
design. As a result, huge energy loss would be incurred in the main transformer.
The GreenPower UPS™ can intelligently cut off the power from transformer when
UPS is operating during normal mode. Therefore, unnecessary power loss will be
eliminated when utility power is normal, effectively reduce energy and electricity
expenses; when utility power is abnormal, the UPS will switch to “Battery” or “AVR”
mode and the GreenPower UPS™ operates exactly the same as traditional UPS does.

In addition to the energy-savings from UPS, less heat is generated under line mode.
This will help to decrease the load on data centre cooling systems while providing
efficient electricity savings.
Online Double Conversion Topology
Online Double-Conversion topology provides extra layer insulation from power
problems which is achieved by continuously operating off battery power and zero
transfer time during power outage. Bypass switch is commonly employed. However,
same as Line-Interactive models, a few milliseconds output drop is inevitable during
switching between bypass and operation mode.
The efficiency of Online Double-Conversion UPS is typically between 80% and 90%,
depends on different circuit designs. As models with this topology usually come with
sophisticated structure, more components will be required thus more power
consumption will be generated which may lead to potential reliability issues.
Figure 2 Double-conversion Online Topology(Based on IEC 62040-3)
With the lower operating temperature and less components employed, the
GreenPower UPS™ is considered as more reliable than Online Double-Conversion
models since unnecessary current travel could be avoided to reduce power loss.
Furthermore, from a cost-saving viewpoint, the estimated annual energy cost-saving
would be USD$140 by replacing an Online Double-Conversion UPS with GreenPower
UPS™. Considering the average life span of UPS product is about 5 years, the
accumulated energy cost-savings will be as high as USD$700.
The quality of utility power is no doubt another key issue when selecting power
backup systems. In areas with frequent power blackouts, Online Double-Conversion
UPS systems will be recommended to provide adequate protection for

mission-criticals; while in regions with better power quality, the GreenPower UPS™
will be a good alternative.
Why the GreenPower UPS™ Technology is better?
In the efficiency comparison chart below, it is clearly stated that the efficiency
rate of the GreenPower UPS™ is superior when comparing to the
Line-Interactive models from two other brands at any load level.
Figure 3 UPS Efficiency Comparison Chart
CyberPower’s patented GreenPower UPS™ with Bypass Technology reduces UPS
energy costs by up to 75% compared to conventional UPS models. Even when utility
power is normal, conventional UPS models constantly pass power through the main
power transformer, while the advanced circuitry of a GreenPower UPS™ bypasses the
transformer. Therefore, the power efficiency is significantly increased and less heat,
energy, and energy costs are decreased; when abnormal power conditions occur, the
GreenPower UPS™ automatically runs power through the transformer to regulate
voltage and provides “safe” power. As utility power is normal 88% of the time, the
GreenPower UPS™ operates primarily in its efficient bypass mode to ensure the least
degree of heat and energy consumption.

Conclusion
As one of the major corporate commitments, CyberPower endeavours in continuing
the devotion in energy-saving practices as well as the development of Green Product
for the sake of environmental protection. From an economical point of view, the
application of GreenPower UPS™ will lead to significant difference in estimated
electricity cost-savings therefore the decrease of overall data centre operation
expenses.
With the greener UPS improving the power efficiency in data centres, customers will
not only enjoy the saving in OPEX but lower the budget for cooling systems.
Therefore, the GreenPower UPS™ technology will undoubtedly be one of your
exceptional choices for Green IT product purchase! However, the UPS consumes less
than one-fifth power in data centres, adequate data centre design, especially the
right-sizing for all data centre equipments is still one of the most important parts for
overall power consumption saving in a data centre.
