Connecticut’s famous inventions include the dictionary, the lollipop, the typewriter, the hamburger, the Frisbee® and the color television. Connecticut was named for the Mohegan word “Quinnehtukqut,” which means “long river place.” Mark Twain wrote The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn while living in Hartford. The WIFFLE® ball was invented in Connecticut in 1953. WIFFLE balls are still manufactured here. In Hartford, it is illegal for a man to kiss his wife on Sundays. The Connecticut River Valley has more unearthed dinosaur tracks than anywhere else in the world. There are over 2,000 at Dinosaur State Park alone. The State song? “Yankee Doodle Dandy” The Glastonbury-Rocky Hill ferry is the nation’s oldest continuously operating ferry — crossing the Connecticut River since 1655. Hartford has a “secret” underground river, the Park River, that was covered over in the 1940s to control flooding.
