2014-2015 Annual Report
Connie L. McIntire, Foundation Chair
Dear fellow Altrusans:
It gives me such pride and honor to bring greetings to all of the supporters of the Altrusa International
Foundation, Inc. This has been a stellar year for the Foundation and we, as the Board of Trustees, thank
you for all your support, contributions, and help through this last year. The figures, graphs, pie charts and
stories in this Annual Report speak for themselves. Please study them so you can be proud and honored
as well.
What you don’t see is all the hard work that goes on behind the scenes. Let me point out a few of the
behind-the-scenes action:




The Board of Trustees has worked very hard to research your suggestions for the Club 21 Program.
We presented our selections just before the 2015 District Conferences of the four new programs
our Club 21 will support. You liked our selections and the Club 21 Program is showing tremendous
growth.
Many hours of work have gone in to informing you how important our Endowment Fund is to the
Foundation. The results of these efforts is an outstanding number of first-time Lamplighter
recipients this past year. Our Endowment Fund is the legacy of future Altrusans.
The Board of Trustees updated our bylaws to reflect the three new Trustees we installed at the 2015
Kansas City Convention. There are enough jobs and programs to keep us all busy.
We are now a “stand alone” Foundation - completely separate from the Association. We will
continue to work closely with the Association for all of our members. We have our own Foundation
Administrator, Shawna Kaiser. This was a good move for the Foundation and for the Association as
well.
As my term of the Chair of the Foundation comes to an end, I just want to say thank you for all of the support
and help I’ve received from the Board of Trustees and from you, my fellow Altrusans. The Altrusa
International Foundation is alive and well and will continue to support Altrusans for many years.
Connie L. McIntire, 2013-2015 Foundation Chair

Christmas Posada for Casa Campos de San Miguel
Recipient of the 2015 Letha H. Brown Award
Altrusans of Chula Vista assisted the Sisters of the Eudist Servants of the 11th hour with a Christmas Posada on
December 6, 2014 for 150 children up to age 12 at Casa Campos de San Miguel located in Tijuana Mexico.
The Casa is a refuge for women and children visiting incarcerated family members and for those who have come
to Tijuana for cancer treatments. The club purchased Spanish language children’s books at a 25-40% discount
through a partnership with the Barnes and Noble Bookstore at Otay Ranch Town Center in Chula Vista.
In addition, club members purchased and delivered coloring books, crayons, games, journals,
colored pens, puzzles, stuffed animals, soccer balls and candy for each of several
age groups that were identified by the sisters.
Several club members were able to cross the international border and assist at the Posada. Rosemarie Hudson,
Marta Michael, and Shauna Stokes journeyed to Tijuana, Mexico on Saturday, December 6, to participate in the
La Posada. Marta drove her HumVee! The Altrusans joined Sister Viola and the other nuns and other volunteers
in stuffing bags of toys and goodies for the children, sorting the bags by age group, handing out presents, and
serving food to the parents and children. The Posada was held in a large hall, where the children were greeted
by Santa Claus and Mrs. Santa Claus along with several clowns. Fifty tables were set up for the children and
their mothers. Off duty Police Officers were there to help and by the time the Posada ended the boys were
already in the street playing with the soccer balls they had received.

Being Different is Normal:
Creating “Choose Kind” Libraries
Recipient of 2015 Dr. Nina Fay Calhoun Award
“Choose Kind Libraries” focus on books intended to assist students cultivate the qualities of kindness,
understanding, empathy, peacefulness and cooperation; targeting schools with highly diverse cultural
populations and underdeveloped PTA's. Plans are to roll out at least one new Choose Kind Library in
elementary schools each year, depending on funding available.
The first Altrusa sponsored Choose Kind Library was established in Richardson Terrace Elementary School.
Richardson Altrusans met with the principal and the librarian, Leah McDonald. A list of suggested books was
obtained from the Lake Highlands PTA group. The librarian selected 30 books in June so that they would be
ready for the new school year. A special area was created in the Terrace library, and a sign designated the area
as The Choose Kind Library@ Terrace Elementary - A Special Project of Altrusa International of Richardson
Foundation, Inc." Bookplates of the same design were put in the front of all the books by Altrusans.
The Choose Kind Library @ Northrich Elementary is being established. An area of the library has been selected
and Altrusans are placing the first order of books. The sign and bookplates are being created in the same
design as those of Terrace Elementary School, which establishes continuity and a n Altrusa presence.
Each background will be in the individual school's colors.
The First Baptist Church of Richardson is excited about the library and has committed to help purchase books
and assist as needed in other areas. Altrusa Richardson Foundation bookplates will be placed in all these books.
Approximately 135 volunteer hours have been invested in the project by Richardson Altrusans thus far. We
have no doubt that countless hours have been spent by the Terrace librarian in maintaining the library,
and principal and teachers in planning lesson plans and teaching around the "Choose Kind Library".

Altrusa International of Champaign-Urbana, Illinois
Urbana Adult Education High School Graduation
Recipient of 2015 Dr. Nina Fay Calhoun Award
The Urbana Adult Education requested both financial and participation support at their High School
Graduation Ceremony, and the Champaign-Urbana Altrusans wholeheartedly agreed as they felt this was a very
important literacy project.
Approximately a dozen Altrusans helped in various ways prior- to and on the actual day of the graduation
ceremony. They set up signs, served as greeters, ushered guests, passed out programs, made the punch,
provided homemade goodies and other refreshments, plus managed the reception table. All Altrusans wore
one of the Altrusa aprons. They also cleaned up after the event. They were the only group involved other
than Urbana Adult Education.
There were lots of happy grads, family members, staff of the Urbana Adult Education and Altrusans on this
special occasion. Altrusa received many grateful comments from everyone involved in this program. It was a
happy and joyous occasion for everyone. Forty-two students completed the program this year and thirty-one
participated in the graduation ceremony. The money provided to Urbana Adult Education helped go towards
the cost of caps and gowns. The Altrusans were recognized in the program book, and also well recognized with
their new Altrusa signs.
There was an article and photo in the local newspaper, The News Gazette, on Friday, May 29, 2015
about the Urbana Adult Education titled, "I Am So Proud of You," discussing how a woman who dropped out of
school to raise her children sees them as inspiration to go back and complete her education. This was about a
woman who had two children by the time she was 15 years old and eventually had five children. The article
states "Better Late than Never"- and the Champaign-Urbana Altrusans couldn’t agree more.
