Dear Members of the Preston
High School Community,
This past year has been filled with plenty
of reasons to celebrate! Primarily we celebrate
YOU, members of the Preston community near
and far, for your continued support of our
mission and for your generosity towards our
students. Their achievements in the classroom,
on the playing fields, and in service to others are
strong indications that the school founded 65
years ago by the Sisters of the Divine Compassion
continues to thrive.
In early June we awarded Regents Diplomas to 130 members
of the Class of 2011, with 54 students earning diplomas with Honors
and/or Advanced Designation. I’m happy to report that more than
two-thirds of the class received scholarship awards totaling almost
$10 million and 8 members of this class were designated AP Scholars
by the College Board.
We were finally able to undertake the long-anticipated
construction project to create four modern science laboratories
in our Main Building over the summer months. This project
was funded in large part by contributions to our Today’s Legacy,
Tomorrow’s Promise Capital Campaign and we are so very grateful
to the many people (alumnae and alumnae parents, current parents,
Board members, faculty and staff, charitable foundations) whose
generosity made this possible. With additional funding from the
Westchester Bank, we were able to replace windows, flooring and
lighting and install a new HVAC system on the 2nd floor; and
replace the almost 50-year-old roof over the entire Main Building
as well. Despite torrential rains throughout the summer, the project
was largely completed just as we closed the books on academic year
2010-11 and opened our doors to the Classes of 2012, 2013, 2014 and
2015.
Always mindful of our charism of compassion as articulated
by the school’s patron, Monsignor Thomas Preston—“To see the
needs and wants of others and to fill those needs”—our students,
aided by faculty and staff, engage in many forms of service to others,
ranging from tutoring and mentoring younger students from nearby
neighborhoods to caring for the elderly and infirm in local hospitals
and nursing homes to donating food and serving meals at local
soup kitchens. Our school community also raises awareness of
and supports such worthy causes as the fight against human rights
violations, support for microfinancing projects designed to raise
the standard of living for women and children across the globe, and
providing mosquito netting to reduce deaths from malaria in Third
World countries.
We remain grateful to you for your loyal and generous
support which enables us to carry out our mission and to bridge
the yawning gap between the tuition we charge and the real cost of
a Preston education. You remain valued partners in our efforts to
help our young women realize their full potential and value in the
tradition of the Sisters of the Divine Compassion. God bless you for
the commitment you have made to the future of Preston!

time for all of us at Preston.
President
My thanks go out to you, our
alumnae, friends, families
and benefactors, including the Sister’s of the Divine
Compassion, for your continued support of our mission.
Without your support, Preston High School would not
be able to fulfill its mission to the many young women
who pass through our institution and to their parents
who entrust their daughters to us.
Our students continue to make us all proud.
Our students and graduates have been recognized for
several community service accomplishments. Likewise,
they excell in the academic arena as exemplified by
acceptances to several of the most prestigious colleges
and universities in the nation. In addition high level of
academic awards have been received, including over
$10,000,000 in scholarships.
I am truly gratified to congratulate our Principal,
Jane Grendell, the Construction Committee of the Board
of Trustees, the teachers and staff and the Board itself
for a job well done in making our long awaited Science
Corridor a reality. Construction started last Spring
and continued through the summer into the early days
of September 2011. Preston now boasts a state of the
art environment to foster academic development in
the sciences. This is a facility which will serve as an
attraction to future generations of Prestonites. Again,
I thank you for providing us with the financial support
necessary to accomplish this project.
The Board of Trustees looks forward to the
future of Preston with great enthusiasm. While we
expect an increase in enrollment over the next few years,
we also anticipate continued financial challenges for
both the families of our students and Preston itself. We
will continue to attempt to find creative solutions to
meet these challenges.
In closing, thanks again for your past and future
financial support in enabling Preston High School to
remain a leader of Catholic education of young women
in the Bronx.

Media, Editing & Broadcasting Center, also known as the S.M.E.B. Center
in honor of our beloved Sr. Mary Ellen
Bernard, RDC. MSG Varsity is a collaborative effort with Cablevision’s
new high school sports/activities channel and www.msgvarsity.com.
girls create a concept and then produce films that they can be proud of.
This course and club compliment the
PHS curriculum as it contributes to
improved writing, organization, and

This new space on the third floor of
the mansion is home to the first Video
Production course this year. PHS
students document school activities
and edit short programs for the website and larger pieces to submit to the
MSG Varsity television channel.
Mr. Craig Youngren, esteemed
faculty member at PHS for over ten
years, created the S.M.E.B. Center
and is spearheading the video production program. Youngren began
the Philoso-film club ten years ago
with the purpose of aiding students
in producing short films, laying the
foundation for the video production
program. The new senior elective
course, “Video Production,” provides
a structured time and place for multiple students to capture their stories.
Thus far, the center has three iMac
computers as well as three HD video
cameras and microphones.
Youngren explained that, “The
projects created in the S.M.E.B.
Center are truly collaborative. The

Preston Scholars Exceeding Expectations
The Preston Scholars Program, or PSP, is in its second academic year and now includes 26 sophomores and juniors. The
program was designed to enable and encourage highly motivated students to take advantage of the several Advanced Placement courses offered and to complete challenging, self-designed Christian Service projects. Participation in the PSP is one
more way in which a student can distinguish herself in the increasingly competitive
college application progress.
A student is selected for the Scholars Program at the end of 9th grade, based on her
overall intellectual ability as demonstrated by her high school entrance score, her
elementary school grade point average, her freshman year grade point average, and
recommendations provided by her 9th grade teachers and guidance counselor.
History teacher Jennifer Connolly serves as the director of the Preston Scholar
Program. Rosemary DeMaio, Trish Moran-Muldoon, Kristin Sample, and Brooke
Thomas are members of the PSP Advisory Board.
