ABOUT ABRSM
Our vision
We believe music has the power to enrich
lives. ABRSM will inspire more people
to participate in music and motivate them
to progress and achieve.
Our mission
To set standards in providing the highest
quality music exams, services and
resources, which engage and sustain ever
more teachers and learners, enabling us to
increase our support for music education.
Our work
ABRSM is the leading authority on musical
assessment. By conducting our exams
rigorously and consistently we set the
worldwide gold standard, with over 600,000
people, in over 90 countries, choosing to
take them every year.
As part of our commitment to excellence
in music education, we provide a rich
resource of materials, from books of
repertoire for the earliest stages of
learning to scholarly editions of the great
composers. Our online presence includes
SoundJunction, our award-winning site
for music learners.
We know that good teachers endeavour
to enhance their professional skills.
We support their continuing professional
development through our innovative
courses and online learning opportunities.
‘We believe music
has the power to
enrich lives’
In addition to the many benefits our work
inherently brings to individual teachers and
students, as a not-for-profit organisation
our surpluses are used to support music
education through donations, scholarships
and sponsorship. We act as an advocate for
music education and do all we can to give
music a voice in public life.
ABRSM is directly linked with four Royal
Schools of Music in the UK:
• Royal Academy of Music
• Royal College of Music
• Royal Northern College of Music
• Royal Scottish Academy of Music
and Drama
ABRSM makes significant charitable
donations to these Royal Schools every
year and awards scholarships and
bursaries to many students attending
them. Together we create widespread
public benefit for music education,
reaching everyone from the youngest
learners to professional musicians.

At the end of January, the entire UK
music education sector was anticipating
Darren Henley’s review of music
education in England. We recognised
this review as being unprecedented in its
holistic perspective on music education
in this country, and welcomed many
of Henley’s recommendations.
The forthcoming year will be an exciting
one, as this review and the overall situation
in our sector offer significant opportunities
to create and build upon partnerships
to better engage with music teachers.
Some of our existing partnerships with
music education organisations such as
the Federation of Music Services are
outlined on pages 14–15 of this Annual
Review. In the course of the past year
we have also built upon links with the
Incorporated Society of Musicians, the
Musicians’ Union and others, to offer
the best possible support to teachers.
‘There are significant opportunities
to create and build upon
partnerships to better engage
with music teachers’
One particular idea explored in the
Henley review is that of a pyramid where,
at its base, every child should have the
opportunity to learn a musical instrument
in school, and, at its highest point, a
smaller number will go on to professional
training. Between ABRSM and the four
Royal Schools of Music with which we
share a symbiotic relationship, this path
can already be witnessed in action.
Many students will begin their journey
by progressing through our Music
Medals and graded exams. Some will
go on to further achievements through
diplomas and attending a conservatoire
for further study, possibly becoming
teachers themselves, and later beginning
new journeys with their own students.
This Annual Review highlights the
achievements of the past year, and
the exemplary work of all ABRSM
staff, examiners, course leaders and
representatives in service and support
of teachers and candidates. ABRSM’s
commitment to excellence, rigorous
standards and openness with all
stakeholders places the organisation
in a strong position from which to further
its involvement with partner organisations,
in order to help shape the future of
music education.

In 2010 the uncertain global environment that has
prevailed for the past two years continued to affect
many countries, not least the UK. Governments have
implemented austerity programmes, often very
severe ones, resulting in major spending cuts. Many
households have also needed to reassess and
reduce their expenditure in a number of areas.
Whilst these are unquestionably tough times, it is
gratifying that many parents are still keen to make
the commitment to their children’s education, evidenced
by the consistent number of candidates taking ABRSM
exams in recent years. This continued dedication to
the value of music learning and achievement translates
into strong numbers of exams and publication sales,
and a record performance that enables us to increase
our support for music education in these challenging
times through our charitable giving.
New directions
In last year’s Annual Review, we looked ahead to Chief
Examiner Clara Taylor’s planned retirement in August.
Very sadly, Clara passed away in July after a prolonged
battle with cancer, the effects of which she kept very
much to herself over the years. In addition to the
devotion she inspired in her colleagues and students,
we know that she touched the lives of a great many
music teachers throughout the world as a result of her
work as a leading public face for ABRSM. Her successor,
John Holmes, has taken up the reins seamlessly,
working tirelessly to ensure the peak operation of
the examiner panels.
By way of further internal changes, we appointed
Rachel Baxter to the position of Human Resources
Director in the summer of 2010, reflecting the
importance we attach to the HR function, and the
significant contribution she has made to strengthen
our HR policies and practices. Our Executive Director:
Finance & Administration, Tim Leates, retired at
the very end of the financial year after more than
12 years’ dedicated service. Tim’s remit included
many responsibilities, including the supervision of our
essential child protection policies. His contributions
over his career with ABRSM have been immense, and
we wish him the happiest of retirements. By the time
you read this, Tim’s successor, Sue Cambridge, will
be well-established in her new role, having joined us
from the Tate group, via the BBC and HSBC.
Over the past year we have further refined ABRSM’s
overall vision and mission, which you will have read on
page 1. In the broadest sense, our vision and mission
set the why, what and how of ABRSM’s activities. The
setting of standards in the highest quality music exams
remains of primary importance. We will maintain the
benchmark standards upon which teachers, students
and other institutions rely, and we are determined to go
further still in supporting teachers and students along
their personal journeys to help them meet those levels
of achievement.
Supporting teachers
Our own relationships – partnerships, even – with music
teachers are of absolute importance to us, particularly
in light of our commitment to the highest standards and
supporting teachers in their work to meet them. I am
particularly pleased that during 2010 we took steps to
broaden these relationships, beyond engaging via highly
important professional development courses and
workshops (reported on pages 12–13), by introducing
new models of support.
The distance-learning course Being an Effective
Teacher – delivered online – combines our support
and expertise to help meet teachers’ needs on what
are very much their own terms. The two ABRSM
Conferences in the UK at the end of last year also
offered something new, responding to teachers’ calls
for one- or two-day events that offered flexibility, choice
and a broad range of topics. We witnessed hundreds
of teachers heading away from these remarkable
events feeling refreshed, energised and inspired.
Long-term partnerships
The longest partnership of all for ABRSM is, of course,
with four Royal Schools of Music in the UK. We are
proud of our integrated relationship with the Royal
Schools of Music, and have been looking for new ways
to reinforce and refocus it, so that together we can do
more for the benefit of the public. Details of ABRSM’s
scholarships, sponsorship and charitable donations,

with the Royal Schools of Music – is what supports
our strength in all other countries.
Future commitments
As mentioned by Stewart Sutherland, Music Medals
continue to be a key entry point for many young learners
in the UK. Now available through schools, a period of
sustained reinvestment has led to a broadening of reach
and a second successive record-breaking year for entry
figures. In the core graded exams business, we have
benefited from continued growth in international
markets, with China the single most important
opportunity that has opened up in living memory. We
are actively working to develop our base in China, with
the three main exam centres up and running and strong
numbers of candidates. Our home market of the UK
remains the key stronghold for our exams, and our
success here – combined with the central relationships
We are devoting particular attention to the way in which
we interact with candidates and teachers at our exams,
with the aim to improve the quality and consistency of
this experience in all instances. We want to do
everything we can to ensure that students remain
engaged with and committed to their music learning,
with new achievements and connections to explore
along their own personal paths.

The worldwide provision of music exams
is ABRSM’s core activity and requires a
considerable network of staff, representatives
and examiners. More than 654,000
candidates were examined by over 660
examiners in 2010. Nearly 300 volunteer
Honorary Local Representatives (HLRs) in the
UK and Ireland, and 230 Representatives
and Contacts throughout the world played
a critical role in overseeing exams locally
last year.
Through our collaborative approach to
syllabus development we seek the views
of a wide range of teachers, examiners
and specialist panels. This ensures that
our syllabuses are relevant and accessible
to all, no matter which teaching and learning
approaches are adopted.

EXAM DELIVERY
Facts and figures
The total number of ABRSM exams taken in 2010 was
654,000, an increase of almost 3% on 2009. This
included over 340,000 candidates in the UK and Ireland,
with nearly 150,000 in the peak summer exam period
alone. We saw particularly notable growth in India,
Indonesia, Kenya, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates
and the United States of America. Our operations in
China also continued their strong growth, with three
exam centres up and running. Our examiners saw
candidates in almost 90 countries, with 424 tours to
those outside the UK and Ireland. We also celebrated
three major anniversaries: 25 years of ABRSM exams
in Oman, 30 in Anguilla, and 60 in Cyprus.
There was pleasing growth for Singing and Guitar
candidate numbers in the UK and Ireland in 2010.
These results follow the launch of new syllabuses
and supporting publications for these subjects in 2009,
along with teacher support seminars in which we
introduced the new requirements. For the second
successive year, our Music Medals assessments
achieved record-breaking candidate numbers, with
more than 9,000 candidates in 2010 taking the grand
total since launch to well past 40,000.

Customer service
Regular e-newsletters for applicants have continued
throughout 2010, sent on a monthly basis to those in
the UK and Ireland, and quarterly in all other countries.
Tens of thousands of applicants receive these regular
updates, which include reminders and items of interest
such as tips for dealing with nerves, a day in the life of
an examiner, a welcome from our new Chief Examiner,
and practical information, such as details of the timescales
for issuing exam results.
Our online exam booking system continued to increase
in significance for applicants in the UK (75% of candidates
were entered online) and Singapore, where all entries
for Practical and Theory graded music exams must now
be made online. Applicants in Hong Kong and Malaysia
also continue to benefit from the streamlined, userfriendly online service we offer. In the UK, we recorded
the record-breaking figure of 82,700 candidates being
registered in the final 24 hours before the online closing
date for summer exams – nearly a threefold increase on
the same date the previous year.
As part of our drive to improve the exam experience
for everyone involved, we held our first ever discussion
focus groups for candidates to find out directly from
them about their experience of ABRSM exams.
ABRSM has always made child protection a priority
issue. Our safeguarding and child protection policy
and procedures – developed in close collaboration
with the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty
to Children (NSPCC) – are published on our website.
In 2010, we entered into a new collaboration with the
Musicians’ Union, NSPCC and Music Leader to develop
a short online training course to support music
teachers by making them aware of their child protection
responsibilities, and directing them to contact the
NSPCC with any concerns about a child.
Examiners, HLRs and Representatives
Our team of examiners was strengthened by the
appointment of 26 new members in 2010. ABRSM
examiners come from every branch of the profession –
performers, teachers, directors, composers and
more – and go through our extremely demanding and
rigorous selection, training and moderation process.
A series of professional development seminars was
held over the course of the year, including new-style
training sessions for existing grade examiners wishing
to diversify and also become Jazz or diploma examiners.
To increase the support on offer to our Representatives
throughout the world, we introduced a new online centre
for their operating guidelines, with the aim of increasing
the level of customer service on offer in all our centres.
These guidelines cover every aspect of a Representative’s
activities, from administering exams to promoting ABRSM.
In addition to this new support mechanism, we held regional
conferences in Barbados and New York. Representatives
were updated with the latest developments, and fed
back valuable information about operations and other
considerations from their own areas. These conferences
are a vital means of enhancing links between staff and
Representatives to ensure the best support for teachers,
students and examiners in our exam centres.
The recruitment process for UK and Ireland Honorary
Local Representatives (HLRs) was reviewed in 2010,
resulting in the introduction of new job descriptions
and application procedures in recognition of the pivotal
importance of this role. Nine HLR seminars were held
around the UK, each expanded to include exam stewards
for the very first time. These seminars focussed on the
exam experience, with exploration of the ways in which
all those involved at local centres can make every
candidate’s exam a positive experience.
Coming through the storm
A number of extraordinary events affected the delivery
of ABRSM exams over the past year. Strikes by the UK’s
national air carrier began in March and continued
throughout the year, affecting the overseas travel plans
for many examiners. The political uprising in Thailand in
April caused the postponement of the exam session until
later in the year.
The volcanic ash cloud in Iceland caused further air
travel disruption in April and May, leaving several
examiners unable to return to the UK and many more
unable to travel to their tours. Floods in Tennessee, USA
in May and the New Zealand earthquake in September
were further natural environmental factors that
disrupted our operations. Late in the year the UK and
Ireland were hit by the largest ‘weather event’ in recent
memory, when significant snowfall and freezing
conditions caused major disruption to exams in one
of the busiest exam weeks.
Throughout each of these circumstances, ABRSM’s
examiners, HLRs, Representatives, stewards and
staff – along with the teachers, parents and candidates
with whom we work – pulled together to deal flexibly
and patiently with many cancelled and rescheduled
exams. Our website, email system and use of social
media allowed us to communicate rapidly and effectively
with all those involved, with safety and security our
primary concerns at all times.

In a year when our attention was shared between core
exam-related publications and several new ventures,
we were delighted to be named Printed Music Publisher
of the Year at the Music Industries Association’s (MIA)
Awards in November 2010. This was the first time
ABRSM had received the MIA’s highest award, and
it was not our only one that night.
Alan Bullard’s Joining the Dots won both the Best
Education Publication and the Innovation in Music
Publishing awards, and our UK & Ireland Sales
Executive, Roger Gale, was awarded the Retailers’
Award for Distinction in Printed Music Publishing.
Recognising ‘the best people, products and companies
in the industry’, the MIA gives awards to manufacturers,
distributors, retailers, publishers and educators across
30 categories.
Normal service
The publishing for which ABRSM is renowned –
supporting the exam syllabuses – was well represented
in 2010. A new Piano syllabus saw the emergence of
Selected Piano Exam Pieces for all eight grades with
recordings on CDs of all the pieces, played by a group
of distinguished players. The other fresh syllabus was
for Organ, and there were significant innovations in the
revised technical requirements (detailed on page 9),
supported by new publications.

• Best Education Publication
• Innovation in Music Publishing
• Retailers’ Award for Distinction

New Specimen Aural Tests books were released in July
2010 to help teachers and students prepare for the
modifications to the aural tests from January 2011.
These new editions included the examiner rubrics to
help candidates and teachers prepare for what they
can expect to hear from an examiner in an exam room.
Other new features were answers to the tests where
appropriate, and CD recordings of all the tests to help
those teachers who might find playing the tests difficult
or might want their students to practise on their own.

Global offering
The first fruits of collaborations with German and
Italian publishing houses were seen in the latter half
of the year. Edition Hinrichsen in Leipzig published
Ausgewählte Prüfungsstücke für Klavier 2011/2012,
Stufe 1–5 (Grades 1–5 of the Selected Piano Exam Pieces
2011 & 2012) to support the development of ABRSM Piano
exams in Germany. Edizioni Curci in Milan published
Teoria Musicale in Practica (Music Theory in Practice) to
encourage theory students in our Italian centres.
Another significant offering was made by the Shanghai
Music Publishing House with their release of the
Chinese-language edition of Barry Cooper’s landmark
edition of Beethoven’s 35 Piano Sonatas.
Applications
The downloading of single tracks from exam syllabus
recordings showed a marked increase in popularity
in 2010. We entered into a new partnership with
PureSolo, whose website now provides backing tracks
for the Flute and Clarinet exam pieces, together with
the solo parts displayed on screen. Users can record
their performances and share with friends, family and
teachers. To complement all our duo recordings, we
launched Speedshifter, a free practice tool that allows
performers to slow down (or speed up!) the piano
accompaniments of their exam pieces.
Distribution
At the very end of 2010, Oxford University Press (OUP),
the sole worldwide sales agent and distributor of
ABRSM publications, moved its UK warehouse and
distribution centre from Corby to a new site in nearby
Kettering. The move was carried out with the usual
OUP efficiency and there was minimal disruption
to the service to ABRSM’s customers.

I thought the books were excellent
in terms of content, layout and
presentation … they are an
incredibly useful tool for ABRSM

‘I have been revelling in
what I have learnt from
my mentor’s wonderful
knowledge on how to
teach piano technique,
and I feel that I have
been fired up musically’
Ken Virgin,
CT ABRSM, UK 2010
This has been a year of sustained growth and innovation
in ABRSM’s work to support teachers’ professional
development. We continue to provide high quality input
in environments conducive to learning to support music
teachers effectively.
An extended family
In February 2010 we launched our brand new and
entirely online course, Being an Effective Teacher, the
first ABRSM course available to teachers throughout
the world. The 66 teachers in the first cohort included
colleagues from Australia, Greece, the UK and more.
From the outset it was clear that this distance-learning
approach was exactly what these teachers wanted.
Far from being remote colleagues, they quickly became
part of ABRSM’s extended family of fellow professionals,
working together to achieve common goals.
Thinking in a different way
In the same month a group of teachers working with
Southend-on-Sea Music Service embarked on a bespoke
version of the Certificate of Teaching (CT ABRSM) course.
For many of them it was a first step into professional
development and – at times – a difficult journey, but
as one teacher, Vic Collins, put it: ‘Each study session
starts you thinking in a different way, and I can see that
it will all be useful in my future work.’
In March 2010 we launched the CT ABRSM Plus
course in Singapore. This enabled us to build on the
established success of the CT ABRSM course by
including preparation for, and admission to, the
Principles of Teaching diploma exam (DipABRSM level).
The majority of 2009–10 CT ABRSM students in the UK
completed their studies in July 2010. Many attended the
annual Award Ceremony at Wigmore Hall, London
where guest speaker John Wallace, Principal of the
Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, reminded
them of the importance of perseverance when developing
skills as teachers and performers.
Focused short courses
The annual South East Asia professional development
programme seminars in 2010 took place in Hong Kong,
Indonesia, Macau, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand.
These seminars – along with their counterparts given
across the UK – introduced the new Piano syllabus
for 2011. The UK seminars were incorporated in
the programme for the inaugural ABRSM weekend
conferences held in Birmingham and Ilkley.
Seminars given in Cyprus, Portugal and the USA were
supported by ABRSM’s Centenary Travel Grant. Topics
included improvisation, teaching and learning, aural
perception and the ever-popular ‘how to get better
marks in your exam’. Our continuing professional
development (CPD) programme in the UK now includes
the topics playing by ear, improvisation and aural
teaching. These CPD short courses are equally popular
with teachers who have completed the CT ABRSM
course (or one of our other courses) as they are with
those new to CPD.

Scholarships
We continue to support young musicians at the beginning
of their professional music careers. We offered a total
of 25 scholarships to junior, undergraduate and
postgraduate students at four Royal Schools of Music
in 2010. The 2010 scholars come from a number of
different countries, including the UK, as well as Brazil,
China, India, Panama, Russia, South Africa, South Korea
and Venezuela. They are now studying a wide range
of subjects: bassoon, cello, clarinet, composition,
conducting, double bass, flute, horn, piano, jazz piano,
trombone, trumpet, violin and voice. These awards
are among the most supportive of those available
to students who wish to study in the UK.

Bursaries and prizes
Our annual Macklin Bursaries helped four ABRSM
scholars - violinists Anisa Arslanagic and Eloisa Fleur
Thom, flautist Benjamin MacDougal and bagpiper
Keith Bowes - to further their studies or launch
professional careers. Hundreds of further prizes
were awarded to candidates who had excelled in their
graded music exams.
Sponsorship
We continued to provide financial support for a number
of music education organisations. Our sponsorship
of the UK branch of the European String Teachers
Association (ESTA) in 2010 funded their two conferences
and summer school for string teachers.
This was the sixteenth year that ABRSM has supported
Music for Youth and its Regional Festival Series,
directing funding towards the development of musical
talent in a variety of age groups, genres and locations.
Our renewed sponsorship of the Federation of Music
Services (FMS) was announced at the FMS Conference
2010 in Belfast, and will support the ongoing promotion
and provision of the 12-month course Rising with the tide:
managing and leading music services in the 21st century.
Launched in 2010, the course aims to support beginning,
developing and established leaders, both individually
and collaboratively, in building professional knowledge
around learning-centred leadership. ABRSM also
continued to provide the FMS with a consultancy
on professional development within music services;
a partnership designed to ensure that the quality of
teaching, learning and musical leadership in the UK
is supported at all levels.
In 2010 we sponsored the Youth Orchestra of the Middle
East, a cultural initiative working across the region that
focuses on developing and nurturing the talent of young
musicians of all nationalities. The orchestra runs oneweek residential courses in Dubai, culminating in
concerts in Abu Dhabi.
ABRSM is the principal sponsor of the regional coaching
programme from Chamber Music New Zealand (CMNZ).
This programme enables CMNZ to send leading ensemble
coaches to work with selected groups throughout New
Zealand who are taking part in the annual New Zealand
Community Trust Chamber Music Contest. In 2010, 45
groups benefited from coaching provided by professional
musicians, many of whom participated in the competition
themselves as children.
‘With the support
of partners such
as ABRSM, ESTA
will be able to
fulfil its mission to
promote excellence
in string teaching’
David Marcou,
Chair of Management Committee, ESTA UK
In addition to sponsorship, we donate thousands of
music books and CDs to schools throughout the world
every year. In 2010, 110 large boxes full of music were
sent to recipients in 16 countries. The music available
varies from year to year, but packages are tailored
wherever possible so that the materials sent match the
needs of particular schools. The donations include
ABRSM publications – out of print volumes, returned or
slightly damaged stock, old exam music, books used in
exhibitions – together with items from ABRSM’s reference
library, which includes a wide range of materials for
many instruments and from many different publishers.
Individuals occasionally request that ABRSM pass on

The RNCM also places great emphasis on its scholarship
scheme, allocating ABRSM donations to their international
scholarship and general endowment schemes, assisting
many international students along with those from the
UK and Europe. ‘Without ABRSM funding we would be
much more limited in what we could do for our students
and their future careers,’ says Linda Merrick, the
college’s Vice-Principal. ‘It doesn’t just add value to
what we do – it’s absolutely vital – and has an enormous
impact on our ability to offer outstanding teaching,
scholarships and access programmes.’
‘Funding such as this
is absolutely vital to the
Royal Schools of Music’
In addition to the extensive range of scholarships,
bursaries, prizes and sponsorships we offer (see pages
14–15 and 25–28), ABRSM makes sizeable charitable
donations that provide essential funding to four Royal
Schools of Music: the Royal Academy of Music (RAM),
the Royal College of Music (RCM), the Royal Northern
College of Music (RNCM) and the Royal Scottish Academy
of Music and Drama (RSAMD) – to be renamed the Royal
Conservatoire of Scotland from September 2011.
These donations are one facet of ABRSM’s symbiotic
relationship with the four Royal Schools of Music, and
are made over and above at least 80 ABRSM scholarships
that are active at any one time. Each of the four Royal
Schools has the freedom and flexibility to utilise the
funding for projects that they consider to be the most
deserving but essentially, it plays a major part in their
core academic delivery.
ABRSM funding is also used in significant outreach
projects up and down the country. At the RNCM, for
example, our support enables outreach projects to be
taken into hospitals, young offender institutions and
deprived schools. The RNCM also runs a scheme that
focuses on student entrepreneurship. Here the college
encourages students to develop their skills in devising,
setting up and publicising individual events, developing
expertise in fields outside of their musical studies which
will be extremely useful to them in the wider world once
their studies are completed.
Aaron Shorr, Head of Keyboard at the RSAMD, also
acknowledges the crucial contribution ABRSM’s support
makes to its activities. ‘It’s enormously important to us,’
he confirms. ‘This funding is essential and enables us
to support many more students.’ ABRSM’s donation is
paid into the RSAMD Trust before being assigned to a
number of initiatives. A significant proportion of this sum
is dedicated to scholarships on an ongoing annual basis
but financial support is provided in a variety of other
areas via the Trust. These range from the recruitment
of international students to learning technology
development and the RSAMD’s Curriculum Reform
Project. In addition, the academy also uses the
donations to obviate student hardship in many of the
same ways in which the RNCM does. Students are
given financial assistance to help with living expenses
or bursaries for instruments with the intention of
supporting major talent.
‘Funding such as this is absolutely vital to any of the Royal
Schools trying to manage within the financial restraints
which are placed on us,’ says Mark Wildman, Head of
Vocal Studies at the RAM. Part of the ABRSM donation
underpins the academy’s bursary scheme particularly
in relation to postgraduate studies but the funding also
extends through the whole range of activities that the
academy undertakes. These activities include outreach
projects and all of its public access offerings – many of
which are open to the public free of charge – including
the masterclass scheme where the expertise of eminent
musicians is shared; the museum, which is open to
students, educational groups, families and members
of the public; and the extensive performance programme
of over 100 events per term, which recently included the
staging of Kommilitonen!, the new opera by Sir Peter Maxwell
Davies that premiered at the academy in March 2011.
17
For the RCM, the ABRSM donation enables it to fulfil its
founding objective: to ensure that no talented young
musician is denied the chance to study at the highest
level for financial reasons alone. ‘The support of ABRSM
makes it possible for the RCM to sustain its world-class
standing by supporting the funding of the highest quality
facilities and services,’ says Kevin Porter, RCM Deputy
Director. To this end the RCM employs the funding
across a wide range of activities, from its ambitious
performance programme to the RCM Sparks outreach
programmes that benefit students in schools and
the wider community. ABRSM’s donation also helps
support the RCM’s acclaimed Woodhouse Professional
Development Centre, a world leader in career development
for students and graduates, plus initiatives to improve
physical and digital access to the college’s important
collections of portraits, instruments, manuscripts and
early printed music. Additionally, with ABRSM assistance,
the RCM is able to provide four new scholarships
(two to UK students and two to international students)
every academic year, thus making a total of 12
ABRSM-assisted scholarships being progressed
through the college at any one time, in addition to
those directly awarded by ABRSM.
The interconnections between ABRSM and the four
Royal Schools of Music means that they inherently
embody a central recommendation set out in the recent
Henley Review (see page 2) – that musical organisations
need to work in partnership with one another to best
support learners along their individual paths. In this way,
the five organisations’ collective offering is far greater
than the sum of its parts, including as it does a
comprehensive programme of exceptional teaching,
professional development, assessment, scholarships,
bursaries, outreach, published resources, exhibitions,
masterclasses and performance programmes.
‘These are unquestionably tough times,’ says ABRSM
Chief Executive, Guy Perricone, ‘and if our charitable
giving had a role to play in the past, it has an increased
importance today. Our relationship with the four Royal
Schools of Music is alive and ever-evolving, and helps
us all to broaden our reach far beyond the UK. We aim
to assist them in their work to create the best-possible
environment not only to nurture the highest musical
talent – regardless of financial circumstance – but
also to share great music-making with as many people
as possible.’

Obituaries
We sadly note the passing
of the following examiners:
James Eastham (1932–2010)
Philip Hamond Moore
(1940–2010)
Clara Taylor (1948–2010)
Clara was appointed Chief
Examiner to ABRSM in 1997,
having been an examiner,
moderator and trainer. During
her time at ABRSM she
visited many countries to give
seminars and workshops
to music teachers. She was
responsible for the selection,
training and moderation of all
ABRSM examiners, as well
as their ongoing professional
development, and led a series
of seminars for the examining
panels each year. She inspired
great devotion from all
examiners and staff through
her musical authority, caring
nature and warm humour.
CT ABRSM
MENTORS
R E P R E S E N TAT I V E S
Every member of our
130-strong mentor
panel is trained to help
teachers fulfil their
ambitions through
continuing professional
development courses.
The following members
of the panel served as
Certificate of Teaching
(CT ABRSM) course
leaders and mentors
for the 2009–2010 oneyear courses and the
2010 fast-track course:
During 2010, over 500 representatives were
involved with the work of ABRSM around the
world. They have an immensely important role
to play: assisting with the local administration
of exams; liaising with teachers, pupils and
parents; and organising a range of activities
including High Scorers’ Concerts and seminars.
