A Guide To Bidding at Horse Auctions
By Cathy Jennings - Flashpoint Bloodstock, LLC
You want
to buy a
horse. You’ve
decided
you can get
the
most
“bang
for
your buck”
by
buying
at auction.
Y o u ‘ v e
chosen
a
reputable auction company with a
proven track record. You’ve carefully
shopped.
You’ve found a horse (or preferably
two, in case the first one goes beyond
your budget) that will suit you. You have
talked to the sellers and are comfortable
with your choice(s). You have read the
conditions of sale and are satisfied that
you can comply with them.
Now comes the part that can be fun,
nerve wracking, or both! Bidding on the
horse!
Auctions are designed to be fast
paced and adrenaline inducing. You
have the auctioneer’s chant, the ring
men’s shouting and the gavel pounding.
Things are happening very quickly. It is
important to understand the process,
so you don’t get too caught up in the
moment and spend more than you
originally intended, or get confused and
frustrated. You need to have a plan.
Determine the price you are willing to
pay. You probably had a pretty good idea
what your budget would allow before
coming to the auction. Sticking to that
budget can be hard to do. If you have
been searching for that perfect horse
for months and months, and, all of a
sudden, here he is, chances are he is
the perfect horse for someone else at
the sale as well, and you might have to
stretch to get him. If that is the case, do
not let a few hundred dollars stand in the
way of you and your dream horse. If you
are looking for something less exacting,
perhaps, several other horses might fill
the bill for you, then you can afford to
stick to your budget. If you don’t get the
first one, another one will come along.
Listen to the Auctioneer. Well before
your potential purchases come into the
ring, you should sit and listen to the
auctioneer’s chant. Sit through several
horses until you can understand what
he is saying, and tell where the bid IS,
and what he is asking FOR. Then, when
4
Bidding to Win
it comes your turn, you won’t lose your
place, and not know how much you are
bidding. Different auctioneers have
different styles. They also sell out in
different ways. Some give “fair warning”
and some just “hammer down” sold!
You need to know this, so your horse
isn’t sold before you have a chance for
a final bid.
Decide WHERE you are going to bid.
Are you going to be out front? Are you
going to be behind the box? There are
pros and cons to both places. Out front,
you can see more of what is going on,
and who you are bidding against. The
downside to that is that the one who
is bidding against you can see YOU. It
is very easy to get into a battle of egos
and spend too much for a horse. Also,
very seldom will you bid directly to the
auctioneer. More likely, you will be bidding
to a ring man. Sit down several horses
before the one you want, and establish
contact with him. It is sometimes good
to alert him when the horse you are
interested in comes into the ring, so he
can be watching for your bid.
Listen to the announcements when
your horse comes into the ring. All
announcements take precedence over
what is written in the catalog. If the
announcer calls the horse a cribber,
and you didn’t hear it, even if it wasn’t in
the catalog, and you are the buyer, it is
still your horse. It is your responsibility to
listen to those announcements!
Do not wait too long to bid. If you do,
you might end up losing the horse. Let
the ring man know you are interested,
then wait a bit. You can usually tell when
the auctioneer is getting close to the
reserve, as the bidding is sometimes
fairly fast up until that point. It will then
slow down a little and that is when you
should start bidding. The exceptions to
that would be the horses that sell with
no reserve, or the horses that are so
popular that they fly past their reserve
with many people bidding on them.
If you are interested in one of those
horses, you’d better be bidding from the
beginning.
Know the psychological barriers.
What is this? There are psychological
barriers that buyers unconsciously set
for themselves not to go beyond. You
might have set your budget at $5000.
The person bidding against you might
also have a $5000.00 budget. So,
whoever gets there first, wins, right? If
the bidding is going something like this….
“$4600, I have 46, 46 do I hear $4800,
I have $4600 do I hear $4800, I have
$4800, 48, 48, do I hear $5000??, 5,
5, I have $48, do I hear $5000?” So,
if you have the bid at $4600, and the
auctioneer is asking for an advance,
he first might ask for the $5000. The
other bidder probably won’t want to do
that, unless he is really aggressive, and
wants to try to scare you off. $5000 is
one of those psychological barriers. So
is $5,500. So is $6,000. All increments
of $500.00 are barriers. If you have
the bid at $4600 and the other bidder
advances it to $4800, that’s great,
because you can be the first to $5000.
The worst thing you can do at this point
is go to $4900, thinking you’re going to
save a hundred dollars. That will leave
the door open for him to get to $5000
first.
But, what if he gets to $5000 first?
Do you abandon your budget? Do you
concede defeat and move on to another
horse? This is where it’s good to know
about these barriers. If he gets there
first, sometimes all it takes at that
point is for you to bid $5100.00. Now
you’re beyond his budget, and he has
to make a decision to keep bidding or
stop. Many times, that shuts the door
and you will have your horse. If it doesn’t,
then you will have a decision to make. Is
this horse worth the extra few hundred
dollars? Have I spent enough time and
gas money looking for a horse just
like this? How much more money am
I going to spend trying to find another
one? These are questions only you can
answer.
Be subtle in your bidding. If possible,
only let the ring man know you are
bidding. This will keep the other bidders
guessing who they are bidding against.
People like to know this. If they can’t see
who they are bidding against, they are
much more likely to stop bidding. When
you win the last bid, stay seated…..
until someone comes to you with your
buyer’s contract.
Usually it will require your drivers
license information, and your signature,
and it will have the hip number of your
purchase on it, and a copy for you to
give to the cashier. Then, settle for
your purchase, go see your new horse
and congratulate yourself on a job well
done! Hopefully you have bought a new
partner that will bring you pleasure for
years to come.

Buyer’s Responsibility - Some Helpful Hints
• The Seller has a responsibility to announce defects, that they know
of, in their ponies, particularly those that may affect the soundness
of the pony for the purpose they are advertised for. What is a
defect to one person, may not be a defect to another.
• The Buyer has a responsibility to examine a pony carefully before
they bid on it. If you have any particular concerns about conformation faults or defects, size, attitude, stall manners, riding ability
or anything else, check it out BEFORE you bid. If you buy a pony
on impulse, without shopping it before you bid, you may expect
to find some surprises. In that case you still own the pony. The
seller is not responsible for you if you don’t shop the pony. Once
you bid on a pony, you are indicating you have shopped enough
to satisfy yourself and no one else is responsible.
Some suggestions:
• READ THE CONDITIONS OF SALE in the catalog. If you have
questions, please call the sale management.
• CALL OUR OFFICE FOR PHONE NUMBERS OF SELLERS TO
GET MORE INFORMATION BEFORE THE SALE. When you
have selected some prospects in your catalog, call the sellers
before the sale and ask about the pony. It will save time.
• CHECK THE REPOSITORY - Certain Veterinary information
for Ponies may be available in the Repository, located in
the Auction Office. Information not specified in the SEVENTEENTH CONDITION contained in the Repository may not be
announced. It is the sole responsibility of Buyers to exam the
Repository information PRIOR TO BIDDING. A Pony can not
be rejected, nor the sale of the Pony be altered, for information that is contained in the Repository.
• Make a list, written or mental, of the things that are important to
you in a pony. Think about the good characteristics you want
and also think about the vices, habits or characteristics you do
not want in a pony. Consider what negative characteristics you
can put up with if a pony can serve your primary purpose well.
Go through this checklist for each pony you shop. Ask questions
and make sure you get the answers. Do this BEFORE you bid,
because after you buy a pony you cannot change your mind if you
don’t like the pony.
• What is the purpose for your new pony? - Show, recreational
riding, racing, breeding, etc. Look for a pony that is bred for or
trained for the type of use you need.
• Conformation - Examine the pony carefully for conformation
defects that may affect your use of the pony. Remember, the
“perfect” pony has never been found. Decide what characteristics are important to your purpose and make sure these suit you.
There are some areas where you may accept some deviations
from ideal conformation, if they don’t cause a problem for you.
• Appearance - A pretty pony will always get your attention. We
tend to fall in love with a pony because of eye appeal, then hope
it will suit our purpose. Be sure to look past pretty and see if the
pony really suits. Try not to let color be your only criteria. If you
want to show or breed for the color breeds, it will be important.
The more specific your desire for a certain color, the harder it is to
find the right pony for the purpose.
• Soundness - Examine the pony carefully for any blemishes that
may cause soundness problems. Watch the pony move and
watch for lameness. Check the ponies eyes for obvious defects.
Try to notice if the breathing sounds normal. If you see something
that concerns you, either mark this pony off your list or get a veterinarian to examine the pony before you bid on it.
• Stable Manners - If this is an important issue for you, then make
sure you go to see the pony in the stall. Ask the seller questions
about how the pony is in the stall or in the pasture, alone or with
other ponies, how is it to groom, shoe, clip, load, haul or anything
else that concerns you. Also ask about cribbing or weaving. To
some buyers these items may not be as important as winning in
the show ring. To others, this area may be the most important
characteristic to consider.
• Veterinary examination - Before you buy a pony, you may have a
veterinarian examine it in any way you want and the seller will allow. In most cases, a general examination by a veterinarian will do
quite well. This would involve a visual examination for defects,
watching the pony move, possibly flexion tests and hoof testers
and checking the eyes, wind and heart. Some buyers have made
arrangments with the seller and a veterinarian to meet early at the
sale grounds and allow time for an extensive prepurchase exam,
including radiographs. Other buyers have contacted sellers to get
a veterinarian to examine the pony before it comes to the sale.
REMEMBER, AFTER you purchase a pony the veterinary examination allowed by the Sale conditions is very limited.
• Drugs and medication - We feel this is not as much of a problem
as some people suspect. If you are concerned about a pony being
drugged to mask a soundness or performance problem, we can
suggest a way to check that, if a problem actually arises. You
may have the veterinarian draw a blood sample at the sale, at
a small cost, and hold it pending the need to run a drug screen.
Check with the veterinarian to determine the price of a blood
screen. If after a week you have not experienced problems that
could have been masked by drugs, the veterinarian can discard
the blood. If you have a problem that you suspect was masked by
drugs, and you had a sample drawn at the sale, contact the sale
management immediately and the account will be held for review.
We do not condone use of drugs to misrepresent a pony. If the
presence of a drug is found that masked a problem, the seller will
get the pony back, if you have notified us in time. Please bear in
mind that because you might not get along with your new pony,
doesn’t mean the pony was drugged. Most ponies need to adjust
to new owners and places, and owners need to adjust to the pony.
• Riding ponies - Watch the preview at the sale. If you are looking
for a riding pony make sure the owner’s statement in the catalog
says the pony is broke to ride, see it ride or better yet, ride it. If
you want a pony for children or beginners, make sure the owner’s
statement in the catalog mentions the pony has experience with
this type of rider and have the rider try the pony. If you are looking
for a show pony, watch the preview to see it in a show ring situation and talk to the seller about maintenance and preparation.
• Insurance - Flashpoint Bloodstock, LLC recommends that the
buyer obtain Full Mortality Insurance on ponies immediately after
purchase, however, this decision and risk rest solely with the buyer.
• WHAT TO DO IF SOMETHING ABOUT THE PONY WORRIES
YOU. - If you see or hear something about a pony that really
worries or bothers you, and you can’t get the answers or information to make you feel comfortable, then “Do Not Buy The Pony.” If
there are some things about the pony that make you really want
it any way, talk to the Sale Manager. If you then don’t have your
answers, pass on that pony. There will always be other ponies
available.
• LISTEN FOR ANNOUNCEMENTS like selling “breeding sound
only” or “As Is” which mean the pony may not be sound to ride.
• YOUR PROTECTION IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY. Please
examine ponies carefully before you bid and listen carefully to
announcements made while the pony is in the Sale ring.
IT IS THE AUCTIONEERS JOB TO HELP DETERMINE THE PRICE. IT IS YOUR JOB TO DECIDE WHICH PONY TO BID ON.
CONDITIONS OF SALE
FIRST - Ponies are offered for sale according to the laws of the State of KENTUCKY. The highest bidder will be the Buyer.
Immediately after the pony is designated as sold, the bidder recognized as the Buyer by the auctioneer will be presented with a
Buyer’s Agreement. The Buyer’s Agreement will show the Hip number, name of the pony, and the selling price. The Buyer must
immediately and legibly complete the required information and sign this agreement. The Buyer shall present picture identification
(such as a driver’s license) to confirm information to auction staff at time of signing. Presentation of the Buyer’s Agreement to
anyone other than the bidder recognized by the auctioneer will not entitle that person to right, title, or ownership of the pony. If
any dispute arises between two or more bidders, the pony in dispute shall immediately be put up again for advance bids. If there
be no advance the pony shall go to the person from whom the auctioneer recognized the last bid. The auctioneer will decline any
bids made by parties who have defaulted in former purchases or by persons who in his judgment, are not responsible bidders.
Rights of consignors to bid are reserved unless otherwise announced. Consignors may authorize auctioneer, or others, to bid on their
behalf.

FIFTEENTH - THE BUYER HAS THE RESPONSIBILITY TO EXAMINE PONIES BEFORE BIDDING. Veterinary assistance is available. Please contact the Flashpoint Bloodstock, LLC office.
SIXTEENTH - Repository - Certain Veterinary information for Ponies may be available in the Repository, located in the Auction
Office. Information not specified in the SEVENTEENTH CONDITION contained in the Repository may not be announced. It is the
sole responsibility of Buyers to exam the Repository information PRIOR TO BIDDING. A Pony can not be rejected, nor the sale
of the Pony be altered, for information that is contained in the Repository.
SEVENTEENTH - The consignor has the responsibility to notify the sales management in writing prior to the sale of any unsoundness of any nature known to him and they will be announced at time of sale. The consignor also has the responsibility to notify the
sales management in writing prior to the sale of the fact that the pony is a CRIBBER, a WEAVER, UNSOUND OF EYES or WIND,
PARROT MOUTH for mares and stallions only, a CRYPTORCHID, MONORCHID or RIDGLING, has been NERVED, has FOUNDERED prior to the sale, has a LAMENESS DUE TO a navicular disorder, osteoarthritis of a joint or other bone abnormality or
neurological disorder including, but not limited to, EPM or wobbles. Mares and stallions will be exempt from the lameness provision
as stated above if they are represented only as breeding animals. If a buyer discovers such a condition in the pony which was not
stated to the sales management by the consignor, as required and specified above, and NOT stated in the catalog or announced
at the time of the sale, and the pony had such a condition at the time of sale, the buyer may have grounds to reject the pony. The
buyer must deliver to Flashpoint Bloodstock, LLC a WRITTEN STATEMENT FROM A QUALIFIED VETERINARIAN within five (5)
days of the date of the sale establishing the existence of the condition, IN DETAIL. The veterinarian’s statement shall include a description of the procedures performed during the examination, the results which caused the veterinarian to diagnose the condition,
and state how it was determined that the condition existed prior to the sale. If the evidence is conclusive, the consignor agrees to
accept the return of the pony and hereby authorizes Flashpoint Bloodstock, LLC to refund the purchase price. If the veterinarian’s
statement is inconclusive or is not complete with the information required above, Flashpoint Bloodstock, LLC may disallow the
claim and pay the consignor. In the event that a consignor does not agree with the buyer’s veterinarian’s statement, Flashpoint
Bloodstock, LLC may hold funds until buyer and consignor resolve the matter in accordance with Condition Sixteenth.
EIGHTEENTH - Disputed Condition - If the consignor disputes the diagnosis by the buyer’s veterinarian for conditions stated in
Condition Fifteenth above, that were not stated in the catalog or announced before the pony was sold, then Flashpoint Bloodstock,
LLC may appoint an equine veterinarian of its choice to determine the condition of the pony. The examination of the appointed
veterinarian shall be limited to the disputed condition. The appointed veterinarian may inspect the pony and may apply such diagnostic testing and procedures as deemed to be appropriate. The appointed veterinarian may also confer with the consignor and
the buyer and the buyer’s veterinarian, and may review available veterinary medical history including conferring with prior veterinarians having knowledge of the pony, and may review the report and supporting information supplied by the buyer’s veterinarian.
The decision of the appointed veterinarian shall be final in all respects and Flashpoint Bloodstock, LLC shall allow or disallow the
rejection of the pony by the buyer consistent with the opinion of the appointed veterinarian. The buyer has the duty to present the
pony for examination with the appointed veterinarian in cooperation with the veterinarian’s schedule and has the duty to provide
board, necessary farrier and veterinary care, and transportation until the dispute is resolved. The appointed veterinarian shall
be within a reasonable proximity to the buyer. If rejection by the buyer is allowed by Flashpoint Bloodstock, LLC, the consignor
shall pay the cost of services of the appointed veterinarian and the buyer may recover from consignor any direct costs as stated in
Condition Eighteenth. Risk of loss passes back to consignor immediately upon notice of decision by Flashpoint Bloodstock, LLC
to allow rejection by the buyer and consignor shall immediately make arrangements to take possession of the pony.
NINETEENTH- The consignor has agreed not to give the pony any drugs to alter soundness or attitude, unless it is disclosed by
a statement in the catalog or announcement prior to the pony being sold. If within five (5) days of the sale, the buyer finds the
pony to be unsound for the advertised purpose or makes a claim of misrepresentation of attitude by the consignor and a blood test
proves positive for a drug that could mask such a problem, the pony can be rejected by the buyer. For a claim to be valid under
this Condition the blood sample must be drawn by the sale veterinarian within 12 hours of the start of the Sale and before the pony
leaves the sale grounds. Notification of a claim by the buyer under this Condition must be made to Flashpoint Bloodstock, LLC
within five (5) days of the date of the sale, by a written statement from a qualified equine veterinarian explaining the diagnosis of
any unsoundness or explaining the behavior problem. The funds for the pony will be held pending the results of the blood screen.
TWENTIETH- In the event a pony is returned to the consignor in accordance with the conditions Fourteenth, Fifteenth, Sixteenth, or
Seventeenth, the consignor agrees to pay all reasonable costs involved with the sale and return of the pony, including transportation, board and appropriate sale fees. In the event of legal action over a pony sold in this auction which involves Flashpoint Bloodstock, LLC, the Buyer and Seller, jointly and severally, agree to pay all costs incurred by Flashpoint Bloodstock, LLC, including
reasonable attorney’s fees.
TWENTY-FIRST- The AGE and pedigree given in the catalog for ponies selling without registration papers is only approximate and
not guaranteed.
TWENTY-SECOND - IN SITUATIONS OTHER THAN THOSE SPECIFIED IN CONDITIONS FIFTEENTH and SEVENTEENTH,
THERE IS NO GUARANTEE OF SOUNDNESS OTHER THAN THOSE MADE SPECIFICALLY BY THE CONSIGNOR.

pony. He has modeled, hacked, and jumped at HITS Saugerties,
ribboning in every class of the Eaton and Berube Children’s Hunter
Pony Finals 2014. He has earned many Champion blue ribbons in the
Children’s Division at “AA” and 4 star rated USEF competitions in New
England (2014, 2013). He is tremendous in jumper classes, ribboning
at 2’3”, along with ribbons in the hunter and equitation rings. Further
he has been a joy on foxhunts, great on trails, and galloping in the
fields. Silverwing is a wonderful boy to have around the barn and at
shows; he trailers well and catches everyone’s eye. Silverwing has led
young riders from Short Stirrup through the Children’s Division but
now, sadly outgrown by his owners, is looking for a wonderful new

Smallwood Celebrity is a VPBA 4 year old large pony out of Maple
Side Wish List. Lilly is nicely started under saddle and jumping small
fences quietly. She is progressing wonderfully in a professional
program with juniors and amatuers in the tack. Lilly has a beautiful trot,
huge step, and a phenomenal "10" jump. She models well and is very
correct with no blemishes. Lilly clips, loads, cross ties easily and has a
fantastic temperment. This wonderful pony could easily be finished by
a junior with a trainer. Jump, model, hack... Lilly truly will be a top
contender in the pony hunters. X-rays Available.

"Misty" is what they call a triple threat in the pony hunter world. She is
a "10" mover and jumper and will win the model. She has been
showing in the regular small pony hunters and is 100% honest in the
ring. We have also used her in our riding school and she is an
awesome pony to hack out cross country. She is very sweet natured
and will make a wonderful partner for the serious competitor. Misty is
UTD on all vaccines and is a pleasure to own, she clips, trailers ,
stands perfectly for farrier and small children can easily handle her on
their own. If I had a rider I would never let her out of my barn. I know I
will see her in the winners circle for years to come!

Farnley Spring Line is a top of the line small pony division prospect for
your consideration. She has showed locally and will be ready to step
into the greens in 2016! Spring is very brave, and has an incredible
style across the top of the jump. She is schooling 2' courses at home,
and while her lead change is not yet automatic for a small child, it is
easily manufactured by a "children's pony" caliber pony rider. Spring is
hacked regularly by my 8yo daughter, and jumps cross rails and small
verticals amiably with her. As she is a very big bodied small, she will
suit several riders, and can accommodate an older or taller child
wishing to do the greens @ Pony Finals 2016. As an added bonus,
she is a very good mover and should get a hack prize in most
company and is quite correct and will model! Please contact us for
more information!

Just back from lease. 9yr Black Cross Welsh Gelding. Levi has
successfully shown in both the Children's ponies and equitation
divisions. Spent last winter in Florida, many Champions and Reserves.
Still eligible Green. Levi has a huge step and consistently jumps in
great form. He is very brave, would make a great Derby mount.
Recently placed 4th out of 12 in his first Derby with 10yr rider. Loads,
clips, great for vet and farrier. 100% sound no maintenance required.
Levi would make a great mount for a child looking to cross enter into
any discipline.

iBet "Spiffy" is currently competing in the medium greens, and several
times in the mediums with great success. He easily qualified for pony
finals 2015 in the medium greens. He is good model, hack, and jump
prize. Spiffy is an easy prep at the horse shows. He is an angel to
handle in the barn, and a pleasure to have around. He is even
uncomplicated enough for a short stirrup rider. You can't go wrong
having this pony in your barn!

Esme has the potential to be a top of the line regular small pony. She
has been the easiest pony to bring along and has been awesome to
introduce to the show ring. She has a "10" jump and an automatic lead
change. Her willing temperament shows in everything that you ask of
her from clipping, trailering to her first time in the ring. She jumped
around like shes been doing it for years. Her barn manners are
impeccable and can be led, tacked up and trail ridden by novice riders.
I think this one will be famous!

uncomplicated, and a SUPER jumper with an auto lead change. Has
shown a handful of times this year in both the greens and the
children's pony- will sell with the possibility of reinstating his green for
2016. Will make up to be a TOP children's pony. Super rhythm to the
jumps- all of the kids favorite to ride. Will continue to horse show in a
professional program until the sale- updates forthcoming.

Millpond Precisely, aka Fajita, is a beautiful small pony. She was
purchased from a breeding program as a summer sale project pony for
my daughter, and thus has been primarily brought along by an 8 year
old in a professional program. She is quiet on the ground and to ride,
very snuggly and LOVES kids!, is a BEAUTIFUL mover, and is
showing great style over fences. Currently WTC quietly under tack,
cantering small single jumps, and trotting in and cantering out of lines.
Fajita has a great canter rhythm, and has a great natural lead change!
She will continue her education by attending some horse shows
between now and the sale!! We will keep everyone updated on her
progress! Though she was purchased with the intent that she become
a kids WT, x-rails, SS type of pony - she continues to impress us with
her great quality canter and lopey step. It appears as though she may
be a quality children's pony contender as she gets more miles! In
addition to being a great asset to any show barn's program, Fajita is
sired by JLA Sir William and has had 2 foals and could also retire to a
breeding program sometime down the road! Please inquire for more
info if needed!
