Two Ursuline Sisters and two Associates reflect and share how they relate
the second part of the Toledo Ursulines’ Directional Statement, “a contemplative
presence in an ever changing world” to their everyday lives. The following
two statements reflect an understanding of contemplative presence and prayer.
Welcome
The words “a contemplative
presence,” if edible, would taste
sweet. Adding “in an ever changing
world,” makes them slightly sour.
They are:
• “The ground we occupy
between the virtue we see
to be possible and its actual
flourishing throughout the
land.” (John Mogabgab)
• taking the world we see
with human eyes to prayer
and looking back at it with
God’s eyes
• staying in the middle of
the mess to welcome
those who come seeking
respite from it
• to be, as Angela bids,
piazzas, places of welcome

Contemplative prayer, remaining silently and openly in God’s presence,
“rewires” our brains to think non-dually with compassion, kindness, and a
lack of attachment to the ego’s preferences. In contemplative prayer we move
beyond language to experience God as Mystery. We let go of our need to judge,
defend, or evaluate, plugging into the mind of Christ which welcomes paradox
and knows its true identity in God. During contemplation we come to know
that there is no separation between sacred and secular. All is one with Divine
Reality. Through contemplation we develop the capacity to “witness” our egoic
motivations and bring this knowledge into our day-to-day actions, living with
increased freedom and authenticity through this deep awareness of our self and
God’s Self. Fr. Richard Rohr often says that contemplation is an exercise in
failure. Each time we pray, we come with “beginner’s mind,” true humility, an
openness to not knowing. Even with our best intentions to remain present to
Presence, our habitual patterns of thinking and feeling interrupt and distract.
Yet it is the desire that matters, and through our failing we encounter God’s
grace. Contemplative prayer is a practice for a lifetime, never perfected yet

Contemplative Presence is the practice of “being.” It invites us to be
aware, to notice and to be conscious of the larger world beyond ourselves. It
offers a way of “seeing” beyond the visible, and “listening” beyond the spoken.

Joy in living, God’s gift through the Holy
Spirit, spreads among us through relationships. In
contemplation, I let go of my worries and petitions
and seek God’s love and God’s mind. “How do you
see these people, God? What are your dreams for
them?” Sometimes I sit in conscious contemplation,
stretching my heart to open. When I close the covers of
the devotional book, I try to keep the openness going
so that I move in it, too. I want God to shine through
me when I don’t have the answers for those hurting
and wondering what to think and how to act. When I receive communion, I ask
that Jesus live in me so that God’s will can be done through me. He does, mostly
without my conscious knowledge, but I detect God’s hand in the course of each
day’s unfolding so differently from my plans.

How would I define “Contemplative Presence?” I think of peaceful first of all. And when
I think of peace I think of being at peace within myself, deep in my heart. I am at home with
myself. This does not mean I ignore the evils around me, the violence, the hatred, the prejudice
surrounding us and so forth. Does it mean I do not see all of the joys, amusements that come in
a day, enjoying friends, and taking part in activities I enjoy? I do! I see all of this and react. My
reaction comes from deep within. It starts with a sense of God. Is he rejoicing, amused, sorrowful,
distressed and so forth? Then I respond.
I respond out of my prayer life. I respond out of my reaction to people and our conversations.
I respond out of seeing and hearing the daily news and life around me. I respond knowing my
strengths and weaknesses. Contemplative presence means being alert to life and the love of God.

What is the meaning of contemplative presence in my daily life? As I began to consider this
question, I found myself going back to my early childhood which, I believe, was the beginning of
what became a life-time of developing a practice of recognizing the presence of God in the world
and in my life.
As most children, I eagerly approached the exploration of the huge world outside my family
circle. So many things in nature filled my curiosity with awe and wonder. Thankfully I was taught
by family members and teachers that all the beauties and mysteries of nature were magnificent
gifts lavished upon us by a loving God.
As I grew and developed, my main focus was necessarily expanded and deepened to encompass
my vocation, ministry, experiences, circumstances, and other people. Slowly the holy relationship
I had fostered with nature and the animal world took on new depth where I realized I had grown into a holy relationship with
the author of all creation – the giver of all good gifts.
Now in my later years, I have the luxury of more time to contemplate the one who loves us all. And there are times when
I feel that He contemplates me as well! With all my being I thank Him for His endless contemplative “presents.”

Six years ago while studying to be a Spiritual Director, I had no idea how God was going
to let me use the skills I was developing. One of those skills was learning to be present in the
moment - not an easy skill if we are always looking back or always projecting into the future.
Over time and with plenty of practice, I have come to cherish and realize the importance of being
present. Sometimes that is all we are called to do, is just be present. I have had some wonderful
opportunities, sitting with a dying friend, sitting with family in hospice, helping a family plan
a funeral liturgy or as simple as sitting with a customer. Living a “contemplative presence in
an ever-changing world” is not easy when we are being pulled here and pushed there, but I am
learning that God does not call us to be present because we have special education or skills; rather,
God calls us because He knows our heart.

Celebrating Milestones in Religious Life
Sister Elizabeth Brell
65 Years
Sixty-five years! There were
good ones and bad ones as in
every life. Being a follower of
St. Angela Merici was a good
choice… a woman ahead of her
times. She and her followers
were teachers of young women
at a time when educating women
was not a priority in the 16th
century.
My days through the years
have been as an educator. I taught in the classrooms at St.
Angela Hall, Good Shepherd, St. Charles, OLPH and St.
John’s in Toledo, and St. Rose in Perrysburg. Then I spent
seven years as principal at St. Gerard in Lima. That was
a real challenge – 904 students in two buildings coming
together on one campus after several years. Great faculty,
great parents and children, and a supportive group of
Redemptorist priests. After that, I served as principal at St.
John’s in Toledo and then chairman of the Art Department
at Central Catholic High School in Toledo, followed by five
years as principal at St. John’s, Toledo.
After these 32 years in the education business, I made
the decision to go to school to be a licensed practical nurse
and followed by 14 years at Riverside Hospital in Toledo. I
met new people and it was a real switch, from the 7 a.m. to
5 p.m. school routine to working all three shifts until the last
eight years when I worked the 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. shift with
mothers and babies. I loved the mothers and the babies and
the really great staff nurses!
My interest in art has always been a part of my life,
especially having had the opportunity to spend Saturday
mornings in grades 5 – 8 during the school year at the
Toledo Museum of Art from 9 to 11 a.m. While working at
Riverside, the advantage of senior citizens to take classes at
the University of Toledo was too good to ignore, so pottery
became my way of developing my art skills. What a great
choice – I entered a new atmosphere and met great people!
And now I am living at the Ursuline Center. Keeping
the ambience of the lobby attractive with seasonal flowers
and the chapel reflecting the liturgical season keeps me
challenged and busy.

65 Years
It was the visible joy of
being with one another that first
attracted me to the Ursulines.
Camp Ladyglen was the scene
and the players were the Ursuline
Sisters who relished the time there
with the campers and counselors.
Their cheerful personalities and
the laughter they exhibited were
both a fascination and a drawing
card for many of us. We wanted
to be part of that genuinely happy group and experience the
joy they so wonderfully expressed. After 65 years, I guess
the feeling is the same. It is a delight to be with loving
and happy people. Through teaching in grade schools at
St. Angela Hall, Rosary Cathedral, St. Rose and Lima St.
Gerard, I met more of the same. At St. Ursula as teacher,
assistant principal, principal and president over a span of 28
years, through good times and bad, I found there was always
present the warm-hearted support of my Sisters in religion.
The work I enjoy in the Archives each day, finds me in awe
of the past and grateful for the women who, through their
dedication and love of God, brought us to this point in our
Congregation. God has been good to us and each day brings
us to the reason for our existence: Soli Deo Gloria!

60 Years
Sister Marie Denise Hoffman
(Kathleen Ann) is celebrating 60
years as an Ursuline Sister and
54 years as an elementary school
teacher in the Diocese of Toledo.
My very own primary
education began at St. James
School in grades 1-4 and it
was my pleasure and love to be
taught by the Sisters of Notre Dame. I am ever grateful to
them and since a few of the Notre Dame Sisters now reside

at the Ursuline Center I have the opportunity to
thank them every day for the loving care that
was exhibited to me as a little child. After that I
was educated from fifth grade through college by
the Ursuline Sisters at Mary Manse College and
later received a Masters of the Arts in Religious
Education at Aquinas College in Grand Rapids,
Michigan. The greatest gift was received in my
ministry. I was an only child so teaching was
a blessing of hundreds of sisters and brothers
providing a loving family over the years. Yes I
taught them, but the most wonderful blessing was
that the children taught me. “Love is the key.”
St. Angela has stated, “May the strength and
support of the Holy Spirit be with all of you, that
you may persevere steadfastly and faithfully in the
work that you have undertaken.” I believe that
Christ, St. Angela and the holy Angels walk with
me and with each of us every day.

40 Years
A Grad School mentor from another
community once said to me, “Sandy, if
you ever consider leaving the Ursulines,
think of us.” She was a vocation director.
Having been in that role, among many, I
deeply believe that we each have a spiritual
DNA that matches that of the charism to
which we are drawn. While her invitation
was a compliment, accepting it would not
have worked. I know with every fiber of
my being, that I was then, am now, and always will be Ursuline. The
gifts of my father’s sense of humor and compassion and my mother’s
tenacity and resilience made the perfect home for Angela’s charism to
take root in me. In teaching, health care, spiritual direction, leadership
or outreach to women who work the street, I have always tried to be
that piazza, or place of welcome for others. And that has given me
great joy.
Year of Consecrated Life
In Pope Francis’ Apostolic Letter for the
Year of Consecrated Life, which began on
November 30, 2014 and will close February
2, 2016, men and women who have chosen
to dedicate their lives to God through
consecrated life will celebrate the joys and
blessings of their commitment.
In his letter, Pope Francis mentioned
three aims: to remember the past with
gratitude, to live the present with passion and to embrace the future with hope.
This year is meant to invite all the faithful to celebrate religious life as a gift to the
Church.
On February 8, 2015, many religious communities hosted an Open
House to welcome the public for the opportunity to get to know the
particular community a little better. The Ursulines invited family and
friends to liturgy, lunch and a tour of the Center and Archives. In April
some of the Sisters will join students at St. Ursula Academy in their
Day of Caring by assisting with the yard work at Rahab’s Heart. A few
pictures from the Open House are included here.

Sister Maria Jose Gonzalez
Sister Maria Jose Gonzalez died on November 8, in 2014. She was born Alicia
Gonzalez in Sterling, IL in 1918 to Mary Rogas and Sylvester Gonzalez. She was
the oldest of 15 children. Sister Maria Jose entered the Ursuline Community in
1941 having been influenced by Monsignor Gorman who was a friend of her
family and a teacher at Mary Manse College. Sister served the Community for
more than 65 years as housekeeper and cook in many of the convents, including
the Motherhouse, Tiffin, Nazareth Hall, and St. Ursula Academy as well as at
St. Thomas Aquinas Convent. She enjoyed being with her Sisters in Community
and they enjoyed her and teased her about some of her sayings, such as “...
keeping the door ajug” and wearing ear muffins. She was 96 when she died
having celebrated her birthday on June 26th.

As part of the Year of Consecrated Life being celebrated world-wide, many religious communities opened their
doors and welcomed guests to their Open Houses this past February. The Ursuline Sisters invited family and
friends to liturgy, lunch and a tour of the Center and Archives.
