They are attending an ice festival in their hometown when they hear about a meeting on global warming. Yuna doesn’t want to go, but Yuta persuades her. On their way they meet a family of rabbits who have almost been buried by an avalanche, hungry polar bears who can no longer hunt on the frozen ocean, and a herd of caribou who can’t find the grasses they like to eat. Snow people from all around the world have gathered for the meeting, and although Yuta and Yuna feel shy, they tell the group about the animals they have encountered. "Colder is better," some people say. "Maybe, but what can we do about the heat?" say others. But when shimmering snowflakes begin to fall, all the snow people are filled with joy. They recognize that they have a beautiful world and that it is up to them to save it. This is a picture book that works well as a story and as a vehicle to address the crucial issue of global warming with very young children. It includes facts on the effects of climate change as well as a list of things that even the youngest readers can do to help the situation. ABOUT THE CONTRIBUTOR Masako Yamashita has had a lifelong passion for painting and drawing, and she studied traditional Japanese painting in Kyoto. Her illustrations have won a number of awards and prizes at picture book competitions in Japan. This is her first picture book. October 1, 2012 A Treasury Written and illustrated by Marie-Louise Gay Here at last are all five of Marie-Louise Gay’s beloved Stella picture books bound into one glorious volume. • JUVENILE FICTION / Family / Siblings • 978-1-55498-292-9 • $24.95 • Hardback with printed dust jacket • Ages 2 - 5 • 176 pages, full color • 9" x 9" • For sale with exclusive rights in: CA, US ALSO AVAILABLE Caramba and Henry Marie-Louise Gay $17.95 Marie-Louise Gay published Stella, Star of the Sea more than ten years ago. It was an immediate hit, and since then she has written and illustrated four more books featuring the engaging red-headed heroine, Stella, and her little brother, Sam — Stella, Queen of the Snow; Stella, Fairy of the Forest; Stella, Princess of the Sky and, most recently, When Stella Was Very, Very Small. With gentle humor, freshness, a sense of whimsy and exquisite watercolors, Marie-Louise Gay gives us stories about two young siblings discovering their world. Stella, Star of the Sea: Stella and Sam are spending the day at the sea. Stella has been to the sea before and knows all its secrets, but Sam has many questions and Stella has an answer for them all. The only thing she isn’t sure of, and neither are we, is whether Sam will ever come into the water. Stella, Queen of the Snow: Winter was never so magical as in this marvelous book about Stella and Sam discovering a familiar landscape transformed by a heavy snowfall. Stella delights in showing Sam the many pleasures of a beautiful winter’s day, from skating and sledding to making snow angels in a fluffy, white magical world. Stella, Fairy of the Forest: Little brother Sam wonders whether fairies are invisible. Stella assures him that she has seen hundreds of them and says that if she and Sam venture across the meadow and into the forest, they are likely to find some. But Sam surprises Stella and himself by having a few ideas of his own. Stella, Princess of the Sky: Stella and Sam explore the wonders of the natural world. A vast luminous sky, the sun, the stars and the rising moon form the backdrop for their nocturnal expedition. When Stella Was Very, Very Small: This is the story of a lovely tiny Stella, whose world is full of small adventures and slivers of magic. And she delights in sharing it all with Sam when he comes along. ABOUT THE CONTRIBUTOR Marie-Louise Gay is a world-renowned author and illustrator of children's books. In the end he turns the tables. • JUVENILE FICTION / Imagination & Play • 978-1-55498-295-0 • $18.95 • Hardback with printed dust jacket • Ages 4 - 7 • 48 pages, full color • 10.375" x 7.125" • For sale with exclusive rights in: CA, US ALSO AVAILABLE A Few Blocks Cybèle Young $18.95 It’s time for Ferdie to eat lunch, but he’d much rather find the special part for his fighter ship. When big sister Viola promises to help him, he comes to the table. But he finds broccoli on his plate, and carrots! Ever resourceful and imaginative, Viola convinces Ferdie that dinosaurs ate broccoli to escape their fiercest predators, and that carrots are just like the Orange Power Sticks that aliens eat for super vision. Doesn’t Ferdie want to be just like them? Viola continues to persuade Ferdie to eat up, but when her energy finally flags, it’s Ferdie’s turn to create a wonderful surprise. Just as in A Few Blocks, an ordinary event seen through a child’s eyes becomes an amazing adventure. This time the children switch back and forth between the lunch table and the elaborate fantasy worlds they imagine (shown in Cybèle Young’s intricate paper sculptures, which she has created from paintings of the children’s surroundings). At the end of the story, the world of the imagination and the everyday magically come together, and Viola and Ferdie each enjoy a few bites. ABOUT THE CONTRIBUTOR Cybèle Young is an award-winning artist who exhibits her exquisite paper sculpture (Japanese paper printed with etched copperplates) internationally. To some she was the mother of a mestizo Mexico, while to others she was a traitor to her people. In the early 1500s, Hernán Cortés and his conquistadors defeated the great Aztec Empire, built a new city for colonists from Spain and took control of vast lands stretching from today’s southwestern US down through most of Central America. But many people don’t know that one of the reasons for the success of this conquest was the invaluable help of a beautiful woman, Princess Malinali, known today as La Malinche. She was a Náhuatl princess from the coast lands of Tabasco whose kingdom was at war with the Aztec Empire. Because of her knowledge of Maya and Náhuatl languages, and her rapid acquisition of Spanish, she came to act as an interpreter and advisor to Cortés. She also bore him a child. La Malinche is described here, as she often is in Mexico, as the embodiment of a new culture, one in which the mixing of races, Spanish and Aztec, created a new world. This view is not shared by all Mexicans, however. For some La Malinche is the symbol of a great betrayal that led to the death of millions of her fellow indigenous people. No one disagrees, however, that La Malinche was an extraordinary woman, whose life is fundamental to understanding the history of ancient and modern Mexico. Includes beautiful illustrations by Pablo Serrano, maps, a timeline and further reading. ABOUT THE CONTRIBUTORS Francisco Serrano is a noted Mexican poet who also writes plays, librettos and children’s books and edits literary anthologies. He is the author of The Poet King of Tezcoco (New York Public Library 100 Titles for Reading and Sharing) and Our Lady of Guadalupe (La Virgen de Guadalupe). He lives in Mexico City. Pablo Serrano is a visual artist who studied at UNAM (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México), where he took classes with the painter Luis Nishizawa. He has shown his work in solo and group exhibitions and received an honorable mention in the Aguascalientes 2002 competition for young artists. He has also illustrated The Poet King of Tezcoco. He lives in Mexico City. 7 One Year in Coal Harbour September 1, 2012 Written by Polly Horvath The long-awaited, ever-so-charming follow-up to the Newbery Honor Book Everything on a Waffle! A moving book about promises and the nature of stories. • JUVENILE FICTION / People & Places / Middle East • 978-1-55498-169-4 • $14.95 • Hardback with printed dust jacket • Ages 9+ • 96 pages • 5" x 7.5" • For sale with exclusive rights in: CA US Other Formats EPUB $9.95 978-1-55498-306-3 Trade Paperback $9.95 (US 2014) 978-1-55498-170-0 ALSO AVAILABLE Home Is Beyond the Mountains Celia Barker Lottridge $12.95 CAD/$8.95 US On a train trip with her grandmother, young Banafsheh meets a woman who reminds her of her dead mother. The woman is a teacher and a writer, and she promises she will call Banafsheh and come and tell her stories. Later, the teacher weaves the encounter into a story that she tells to the children in her classroom. The children are entranced by the story and imagine how it will turn out. Surely, they say, the teacher will call the little girl. But the teacher never calls, though Banafsheh waits faithfully by the phone and refuses even to go out to play. Meanwhile, the teacher is disconcerted by her class’s reaction, and she agonizes over how to end her story. As a writer, she feels that the story is more important than anything else, and that the ending must be exciting and eventful, no matter what. Perhaps Banafsheh will even have to become ill and die? In the end, the teacher does visit Banafsheh, but finds that it is too little too late. Banafsheh is very angry with the teacher, and hurt. Finally, the teacher makes the biggest sacrifice she knows — her manuscript — in order to save the friendship. This is a thought-provoking and emotionally powerful novel that raises intriguing and child-friendly questions about how real life and stories are interwoven, who owns stories, and whether they can ever truly disappear. ABOUT THE CONTRIBUTOR Ahmad Akbarpour is a novelist, short-story writer and author of children’s books. He has won the Iranian National Book Award and was selected for the IBBY (International Board on Books for Young People) honor list in 2006. He is the author of the picture book Good Night, Commander, illustrated by Morteza Zahedi. He lives in Shiraz, Iran. 9 Nobody Knows August 1, 2012 Written by Shelley Tanaka Based on a true story, from the award-winning film by Hirokazu Kore-eda, this is a powerfully moving novel about four children who become invisible to almost everyone in their community and manage — for a time — to survive on their own. It’s autumn in Tokyo, and twelve-year-old Akira and his younger siblings, Kyoko, Shige and little Yuki, have just moved into a new apartment with their mother. Akira hopes it’s a new start for all of them, even though the little ones are not allowed to leave the apartment or make any noise, since the landlord doesn’t permit young children in the building. But their mother soon begins to spend more and more time away from the apartment, and then one morning Akira finds an envelope of money and a note. She has gone away with her new boyfriend for a while. • JUVENILE FICTION / Family / Siblings • 978-1-55498-140-3 • $16.95 • Hardback with printed dust jacket • Ages 10+ • 160 pages, b/w photos • 5" x 7.5" • For sale with exclusive rights in: CA, US Other Formats EPUB $9.95 978-1-55498-305-6 Trade paperback $9.95 (US 2014) 978-1-55498-118-2 ALSO AVAILABLE Middle of Nowhere Caroline Adderson $9.95 CAD (US 2013) Akira bravely shoulders the responsibility for the family. He shops and cooks and pays the bills, while Kyoko does the laundry. The children spend their time watching TV, drawing and playing games, wishing they could go to school and have friends like everyone else. Then one morning their mother breezes in with gifts for everyone, but she is soon gone again. Months pass, until one spring day Akira decides they have been prisoners in the apartment long enough. For a brief time the children bask in their freedom. They shop, explore, plant a little balcony garden, have the playground to themselves. Even when the bank account is empty and the utilities are turned off and the children become increasingly ill-kempt, it seems that they have been hiding for nothing. In the bustling big city, nobody notices them. It’s as if nobody knows. But by August the city is sweltering, and the children are too malnourished and exhausted even to go out. Akira is afraid to contact child welfare, remembering the last time the authorities intervened, and the family was split up. Eventually even he can’t hold it together any more, and then one day tragedy strikes... ABOUT THE CONTRIBUTOR Shelley Tanaka is an award-winning author, translator and editor. She has written more than twenty books for children and young adults, winning the Orbis Pictus Award, the Mr. Christie’s Book Award, the Science in Society Book Award and the Information Book Award, and she has twice been nominated for the Deutsche Jugendliteraturpreis. The girl does not respond to questions in any language and remains silent, even when she is threatened, harassed and mistreated over several days. Reunited with her mother and sisters, she has been living in a village where her mother has finally managed to open a school for girls. But even though the Taliban has been driven from the government, the country is still at war, and many continue to view the education and freedom of girls and women with suspicion and fear. As her family settles into the routine of running the school, Parvana, a bit to her surprise, finds herself restless and bored. She even thinks of running away. But when local men threaten the school and her family, she must draw on every ounce of bravery and resilience she possesses to survive the disaster that kills her mother, destroys the school, and puts her own life in jeopardy. Two hundred years after his death, the Shawnee chief Tecumseh is still considered one of the greatest leaders of North America`s First Peoples. This richly illustrated biography tells the story of his remarkable life, culminating in the War of 1812. • JUVENILE NONFICTION / History / Canada / Pre-Confederation • 978-1-55498-123-6 • $19.95 • Hardback with printed dust jacket • Ages 9 - 12 • 56 pages, full color • 8.25" x 10.625" • For sale with exclusive rights in: CA, US Other Formats EPUB, $19.95 978-1-55498-205-9 ALSO AVAILABLE The Red Sash Jean E. Pendziwol Nicolas Debon $18.95 Tecumseh, born in 1768, lived during turbulent times: the thirteen colonies revolted against British rule, becoming the United States in 1776, and settlers had begun to push westward, rapidly encroaching on the traditional lands of the First Peoples. Tecumseh realized that unless the tribes came together to form a great confederacy, they would never be able to hold onto their land. And so he began to travel great distances, encouraging many tribes to join forces with him against the Americans. On June 18, 1812, the US declared war on Great Britain. Tecumseh sided with the British, hoping to create an independent native state north of the Ohio River. He developed a magnetic friendship with Major General Isaac Brock, commander of the British troops in Upper Canada, and together they took Fort Detroit. Tecumseh and Brock agreed that one of the goals of their alliance should be to restore lands that had been taken from native peoples. But shortly afterwards Brock was killed in the Battle of Queenston Heights. Tecumseh rallied those loyal to him and fought on relentlessly, but was killed in the Battle of Moraviantown in 1813. Tecumseh`s dreams were never fulfilled, but he remains a symbol of justice for the First Peoples of North America. The book includes an epilogue, a timeline, a glossary and maps.
