Firefighters understand the dangers of heat and flame better
than anyone, and yet many of them are not as protected as
they could—and should—be.
Firefighter turnout gear is designed to protect the wearer against
flames, sparks and embers. But what about the station wear
underneath the turnout gear? Among the many perfect fuels
for fire are 100-percent cotton and poly-cotton, and that’s
exactly what many firefighters are wearing on the job.
The truth is that 100-percent cotton clothes become completely
consumed by flames, and poly-cotton garments are worse—they
burn and then melt, greatly multiplying the devastating effects
