Largest education provider in
South East Melbourne
OUR HISTORY
Chisholm has a long history of providing quality
education. Our story starts in the early 20th century,
when technical colleges were established in both
Frankston and Dandenong, and through the 50s
and 60s other technical colleges were set up
in the region.
In 1998, three TAFE institutes in the South East of
Melbourne were merged into a single entity, creating
one of the largest TAFE institutions in the state.
Named in honour of the Australian humanitarian
pioneer Caroline Chisholm, her example of
community betterment and practical education
has inspired our commitment to providing useful,
industry-relevant education and training that
provides clear pathways to further opportunities.

from Chisholm in the
last 10 years
Chisholm currently offers over 250 nationally
recognised qualifications that can lead into
guaranteed pathways for those wanting to continue
their education to graduate and post-graduate study.
As one of the largest providers of vocational
education and training (VET) in Victoria, we have
emerged as the premier VET and tertiary provider
in the region. We continue to work hard to
ensure that all our graduates are job-ready with
the appropriate skills, knowledge and insight into

WE’RE ON
THE CUTTING EDGE
The reason so many students and employers turn to us for their education and training is our strong
commitment to providing a curriculum that is relevant to established industry, as well as providing
quality training to emerging business sectors.
From traditional trades and apprenticeships to advanced manufacturing and health, we are constantly
adjusting what we offer to match the current and future needs of industry. When you finish a qualification with
us, you’ll be familiar with the very latest developments in that sector.
We continually update our approach to learning, with innovations such as the Berwick TEC,
which allows young adults to tailor their VCAL experience, earn a pre-apprenticeship or an apprenticeship,
as well as providing flexible online options that allow students to learn from home if they want to.

PATHWAYS
Many of our diplomas and advanced diplomas provide a guaranteed pathway into a bachelor degree through
Chisholm or one of our partner universities, with a credit transfer for the study you’ve completed.
The pathways are available in a variety of career fields, from art and business to building, health and computing.
In some cases, you can benefit by earning two qualifications in the time it would normally take to complete one.
This can save you time, money and give you opportunities to work while you study. Even if you choose to
take a break, you can return and continue on your study pathway with us.
For the latest pathways information, find your course on our website and click

FLEXIBLE LEARNING
Flexible learning is offered for some of our courses.
This is a combination of on-campus study with some modules delivered online.
Your study doesn’t have to follow a single path either. For example, if you’ve completed a Certificate IV
qualification on campus and want to study further, you can study your Diploma online, while you work.
This means you can customise your learning method to fit in with your needs and availability.
You can also study part-time taking on fewer subjects. This can be really helpful if you have regular work,
family or personal commitments but still want to achieve your study goals.
This flexibility helps you get the most out of your time with us, and means that we can give you
the skills and training you need, in a way that works best for you.

SHORT COURSES
Chisholm provides a wide variety of short
courses that can help you expand your
abilities and qualifications in specialised
areas. Discover our range of short courses at
chisholm.edu.au/shortcourses
Did you know that you can include vocational
education and training (VET) programs as part of
your senior school studies? These programs may
count towards your VCE and ATAR score, or your
VCAL. Successful completion of a VETiS program
provides you with two qualifications; your VCE or
VCAL certificate plus an industry certificate.

PRE-APPRENTICESHIPS
A pre-apprenticeship is a certificate course
that enables you to experience what it’s like to
work in a trade, before you make a commitment
to an apprenticeship. If you do continue to a
full apprenticeship, you’ll be better equipped
and might even be able to shorten the study
component of your apprenticeship by having
the subjects you’ve already completed
recognised.
APPRENTICESHIPS AND
TRAINEESHIPS
Apprenticeships and traineeships combine
training with full-time or part-time work, so
you can learn on the job, get the necessary
class time and get paid for the work you do in
the field too. We work closely with industry,
community and government to develop
programs that meet workplace needs. The
best thing about our apprenticeships and
traineeships is that you can go to any company
in the sector and be confident you can handle
whatever they throw at you.
CERTIFICATES
Our certificate courses can be used to start on
a career pathway, gain an entry-level position
or round out your current qualifications. The
syllabus is created with a great deal of industry
consultation and the units are relevant and
immediately useable in the workforce. So
whether you’re just starting or already well
along the way to having the career you want,
one of our certificate courses could be just
what you need to make it happen.
DIPLOMAS
These courses will extend your skills and
knowledge across a broad range of technical
and/or management functions. In many cases,
your diploma can be credited towards the first
year of a university degree, which means you’ll
complete your degree sooner. Diploma courses
dig a little deeper into what the industry requires,
and can give you that extra bit of knowledge you
need to make an impact in the industry you are
moving into. VET FEE-HELP is available for our
diploma courses.
ADVANCED DIPLOMAS
This higher level qualification will provide you with
advanced skills and an in-depth knowledge about
your chosen field. In many cases your advanced
diploma can be credited towards the first year
of a university degree. VET FEE-HELP is
available for our advanced diploma courses.
DEGREES
We offer three specialist degrees developed
at Chisholm to specifically meet the demands
of industry. We also partner with universities
to deliver their programs on-site at Chisholm.
You can study a La Trobe University Accounting,
Early Learning or IT degree at Chisholm or a
Bachelor of Early Childhood Education from
Deakin University. Turn over to find out more
about these exciting programs.
GRADUATE CERTIFICATES
These post-graduate qualifications, just like our
degrees, have been developed with industry
to complement existing knowledge. They are
suited to diploma or degree graduates from
other disciplines, or people with relevant industry
experience who are looking to broaden their skills.
For the latest information, visit chisholm.edu.au or call 1300 244 746

Front-end developer
A front-end developer

intuitively and quickly.
With e-commerce and
online businesses rapidly
changing, front-end
developers are in very
high demand.
Everyone’s circumstances are different, and this can
affect how much you will pay.
The maximum cost of our courses are listed on the
course information pages, but it’s a good idea to
check our website for up to the moment information,
as the price can change as resources, funding and
expenses are altered. Go to chisholm.edu.au for the
latest information.
Fees listed on our website are for:
• Students who are eligible for Victorian and
Australian Government subsidised training.
• Students who are eligible for concession rates
on Victorian and Australian Government
subsidised training.
• Students who are required to pay the full fees
for tuition and other costs.
Annual course costs include:
• A tuition fee (for course delivery).
• A student services and amenities fee
(for services and facilities).
• An ancillary fee (for computer use).
• A materials fee (for resources and equipment).
Some courses use more resources than others, and
the cost may reflect this. These fees must be paid on
the day of enrolment, although you may be eligible
for assistance with your tuition fees that can defer the
payment through a government subsidised loan.

FEE PAYMENT OPTIONS
There are several ways you can pay for your fees. Many people prefer to pay over time
or at a later date instead of in one lump sum. There are a few government loan options
available to eligible students too, so you can study now, and repay later.
VET-FEE HELP
Financial assistance
Study now and pay later with VET-FEE HELP – a
loan scheme that assists eligible students to pay
for their Vocational Education and Training (VET)
tuition fees when studying for a diploma or advanced
diploma. Students studying Graduate Certificates
are also eligible for VET FEE-HELP if they are
either Australian Citizens or hold a Permanent
Humanitarian Visa and they are studying the
Graduate Certificate as a Fee-For-Service Student.
If you hold a Health Care Card, Pensioner
Concession Card, Veterans’ Gold Card, or are the
dependent of a spouse or parents who hold one, you
are eligible for a tuition fee concession. This applies
to all courses except diplomas and above.
FEE-HELP
FEE-HELP is a government loan scheme that helps
eligible students to pay for their tuition fees when
studying for a bachelor degree. You don’t have to
repay the loan to the Australian Taxation Office
until your income is above the minimum repayment
threshold for compulsory repayment, although you
can make voluntary repayments at any time.
Payment plans
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders
Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders
are eligible for a concession on tuition and student
services and amenities fees for any level course.
Victorian Training Guarantee eligibility criteria
The Victorian Training Guarantee (VTG) is a
government subsidy that makes training more
affordable. You could be eligible for a governmentsubsidised training place, depending on your age,
educational history, and citizenship or residency
status. If you meet the eligibility criteria, the Victorian
and Commonwealth Governments will subsidise your
training, greatly reducing what you will need to pay.
Payment plans are available for courses at
Certificate II, III and IV level. You can spread your
tuition costs over the year by making part payments
via direct debit on a weekly, fortnightly or monthly
basis. We work in partnership with Debit Success, the
largest direct debit provider in Australasia, to set up a
payment plan that works for you.
Conservation, Parks
and Wildlife workers
Managing parks and
wildlife areas takes
experience. You can work
towards this fulfilling role
with a qualification in
conservation and land
management. Make a

SCHOLARSHIPS
CAROLINE CHISHOLM
EDUCATION FOUNDATION
The Caroline Chisholm Education Foundation is an independent charitable trust, initiated and supported
by Chisholm. The Foundation provides an annual scholarship that can be awarded to eligible
students suffering financial hardship.
More than 150 students are supported with grants ranging from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand,
depending on circumstance and the area of study.
HOW TO APPLY
Applications open in early January, and a selection committee will make a decision within three
weeks of receiving an application. It is a competitive funding process and funds are limited, so there can
only be a limited number of scholarships awarded every year. The scholarship program is customised
to meet the specific needs of individual students.
Scholarship funding is intended to cover tuition fees, materials fees and other specialist needs if
funding permits. For more information on the application process, or to donate, contact

MEET BROCK, A CAROLINE CHISHOLM
FOUNDATION SUCCESS STORY
Brock left school halfway through year 11 to travel around the country on his own.
This meant periods of homelessness, isolation and an uncertain future.
He had always enjoyed the outdoors, having grown up near Wyangala state park in central NSW, but did
not realise that it could become a career until he was in his twenties. The youth of his hometown had poor
employment opportunities, and depression had become a real problem. Brock wanted to help provide a solution
to this by taking people into the outdoors and help them reconnect with nature, and themselves.
“I wanted to make a difference, but I didn’t have the qualifications. I couldn’t afford the course when I found it,
and I couldn’t find it when I could afford it. I learned through friends that the course was offered at Chisholm,
and at a cheaper cost than I’d seen previously, so I moved down to Melbourne and applied.
I didn’t get in initially, but I kept applying and contacted the Caroline Chisholm Education Foundation.
I was determined to make it in, and this year, I did.”
The Caroline Chisholm Foundation has helped Brock realise his dream of making a career out of
outdoor education, and given him a chance to make a real difference in his community by helping him with
the costs of his dual Certificate IV in Guiding/Certificate IV in Outdoor Recreation qualification.
“I’m really thankful to the Caroline Chisholm Education Foundation. They understood how passionate
I was about this, and have supported me in making my dreams a reality.”
Brock is now studying a Diploma of Outdoor Recreation, with the support of a CCEF scholarship.

BERWICK TEC
Berwick Technical Education Centre (TEC) is a unique
learning environment, designed exclusively for young
adults under 20, who want to gain a qualification that
will lead them to a job or further study, outside of the
traditional secondary school system.
Berwick TEC offers young adults a way to work
through Year 11 and 12 VCAL, and study towards an
industry qualification in a way that promotes handson learning and developing industry-specific skills,
mixing regular class room learning with practical
skills training outside of the classroom.
This helps you get a qualification in your future
career quicker, as well as creating opportunities for
an apprenticeship, head directly into the workforce
or move onto achieving a higher qualification with a
pathway through to a Chisholm certificate or diploma.
Feel safe and supported
Most important is the commitment at Berwick TEC to
provide you with a safe environment where you can
discover and develop your talent.
There’s plenty of support including a dedicated youth
worker and supportive teachers.
Everyone is valued and respected as an individual.
Accelerate your learning with the
latest technology
Technology is everywhere at Berwick TEC. It becomes
a natural part of all you do and the way you interact.
You focus on core skills with your teacher and the
technology helps to accelerate and make your
learning more enjoyable.
Berwick TEC has interactive whiteboards and wireless
laptop computers for student use in all classrooms.
There are a couple of options if you want to study with
Berwick TEC. You can choose to do VCAL or a preapprenticeship course depending on what career you
are looking to move into.
VCAL courses
VCAL is the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning.
It’s a way for students to do industry-specific training
as part of a Year 11 (VCAL Intermediate) or Year 12
(VCAL Senior) secondary certificate. Like the Victorian
Certificate of Education (VCE), VCAL is an accredited
senior secondary certificate but is more ‘hands-on’.
If you prefer to learn by doing things, rather than
reading from a text book, this approach can really
help you succeed in Year 11 and 12.
Industry skills training is completed over a full year
of study and is combined with core studies in
numeracy, literacy, personal development skills and
practical work-related skills. At Berwick TEC, most
VCAL courses include a full industry certificate as
part of VCAL.
Some of the industries we collaborate with are Building
and Construction, Plumbing, Electrical, Landscaping,
Art and Design, Hair and Beauty, Health, Community
Services and Sport and Recreation.
Pre-apprenticeship courses
The TEC offers you the opportunity to move straight
into a full time, stand-alone pre-apprenticeship
(without VCAL).
A pre-apprenticeship prepares you to become an
apprentice or trainee and helps you develop the
entry level skills to get a job. Students do not need an
employer to do a pre-apprenticeship.
Successful completion of a relevant pre-apprenticeship
will reduce the term of an apprenticeship or
traineeship. What’s more, employers looking to take
on an apprentice often look favourably on students
who have already completed a pre-apprenticeship.
These courses are all full time and are completed
over 8 to 10 weeks depending on the course.
All pre-apprenticeship courses at the Berwick TEC
are run in our unique building site area that simulates
a real, modern work site where different trades learn
their skills alongside each other and often work on
common projects. Industry standard Work Health and
Safety (WHS) requirements are practised on site. The
TEC is often involved with community projects that
allow students to gain experience on a ‘live’ work site.

ARTS
Robyn Rich
Courses: Diploma of Visual
Arts, Advanced Diploma of
Creative Product Design,
Graduate Certificate of
Public Art.
Robyn used the skills and
experience she learned while
at Chisholm to follow her
dream of forging a career as
a professional artist.
“I had some health issues
before I started at Chisholm.
I wouldn’t leave the house
often because of that. I got to
a point where I just had to do
something, so I began looking
at art classes as a way to
break out of that.”
“I’ve always enjoyed drawing,
and worked doing colour
design in the textile industry,
but I wanted to learn other
2017 Course Guide
forms of art, other ways to
express myself.”
Robyn dreamed of being an
artist since she was a child,
but thought it was always out
of reach. She had used her
art to express herself, but her
studies helped her develop
the skills and confidence
to put more of her personal
expression into her art.
“I had never painted with oils
before starting with Chisholm,
but now it’s my favourite
medium. I was expecting
to be shown how to do the
practical skills, but I was
grateful that instead, they
took us on our own journey to
discover our own style. The
teaching staff were amazing,
and very supportive.”
Robyn has since had many
exhibitions, both as a solo
artist and as part of a group.
“The teachers at Chisholm
have a good reputation in the
Art world, so when I would go
to a gallery, the people there
would know that I’ve been
taught well.”
Though an accomplished
artist, Robyn still spends her
time refining her skills, and
developing as an artist. Her
goal is to put more of her own
message into her art, so that
it can speak to others.

AUTOMOTIVE
Emma Harwood
Course: Certificate III
Light Vehicle Mechanical
Technology
Finding an apprenticeship
via Chisholm, Emma was able
to easily apply her skills on
the job.
Constantly working on
improving her own car Emma
Harwood wanted to secure an
apprenticeship just to be able
to be around cars and work
on them. Finding it hard to get
one without any qualification,
she signed up for the
Certificate II in Automotive
Service Technology at
Chisholm and continued to
look for work opportunities.
2017 Course Guide
“I started the course because
I wanted to find work and
as soon as I signed up
with MyJobs, I landed an
apprenticeship at NGP
Melbourne. My teachers
at Chisholm and the staff
of MyJobs were brilliant in
getting me a placement and
now, instead of looking for
work I’m working for one of
the largest dealerships in
the country. It’s exciting to
work on high end cars like
Mercedes Benz.”
Emma is confident in her
day-to-day work, and
attributes her familiarity in
the workshop to the practical
experience provided at the
Chisholm automotive facility.
“When I started working,
I already knew most of what
an apprentice needed to
know. I could identify tools
and their uses which is an
area most apprentices have
trouble with, but I was well
prepared to work and didn’t
need any hand holding.”
Emma continues to further her
education in the industry with
her latest course Certificate III
in Light Vehicle Mechanical
Technology, which she
studies while working at NGP.

BUILDING TRADES
Danielle
Kazi-Shedden
Course: Certificater III
Shopfitting
A career was born out of
a hobby for award winning
student and apprentice
Danielle.
Danielle started out young
working on fitting caravans
but knew that she wanted
to do more. A trial in a
shopfitting workshop made
her realise that it was her
calling and she hasn’t looked
back since.
“I enrolled at Chisholm
to study Certificate III in
Shopfitting while I worked as
an apprentice and what kept
me motivated at Chisholm
were the teaching methods
2017 Course Guide
and the workshop facilities
available. The teachers
were incredibly supportive
and inspired me to become
who I am.”
“Being able to do what I love
for a job means a lot to me. I
wake up in the morning and
actually get excited about
what I have to do each day.
What I love most about
shopfitting is the variety of
materials and designs that I
get to work with.”
“The challenges I faced
during my journey included
being a female in an industry
dominated by males, but I
was determined to be even
better than them and the
awards I won have proven
that I can be. My advice
to anyone who is second
guessing themselves about
joining a non-traditional
industry is to just do it. Try
it out and work hard, get
qualified. If I can do it so
can you.”
Danielle continues to work
as an apprentice at a large
shopfitting company and
will continue her studies
at Chisholm. She plans to
qualify in different areas
of building and project
management, which
she believes will set the
foundation for running her
on own business in the
near future.

BUSINESS
Rodney Renzella
Course: Diploma of Work
Health & Safety
Personal experience
with compromised work
place safety lead Rodney
towards an alternate career.
Having worked in the
automotive industry for a few
decades Rodney Renzella
still remembers his mum’s
advice about taking care of
himself because nobody else
will. Throughout his career
he experienced this first hand
at work places that did not
give due importance to the
safety and health of their
employees, but it wasn’t until
he started suffering from
work-related health issues
that he felt the need for a
career change.
2017 Course Guide
“I wanted to explore my
options and an area that I had
become very interested in
was occupational health and
safety. I attended a career
expo to find a suitable course,
and I was wary of private
institutions offering all kinds
of courses, but I was happy
to choose Chisholm because
it was a name I had known
and trusted.”
“The teachers at Chisholm
were well qualified and
some were from the OHS
inspection industry itself.
They were knowledgeable,
supportive and gave us a lot
of confidence. I had never
been a good student even
back in high school and to
come back into a classroom
was difficult at first, but the
environment was so positive
and focused I found myself
committing to the course like I
never thought possible.”
Rodney has just completed
his Diploma of Work Health
& Safety and plans to study
for his Advanced Diploma
of Work Health & Safety
and also the Certificate IV in
Training and Assessment to
broaden his career options.
He will be transitioning to a
career in workplace health
and safety in 2016.

COMMUNITY SERVICES & HEALTH
Bianca Dyer
Course: Diploma of
Community Services
(Alcohol and Other Drugs)
The desire to help people and
change lives is not just about
a career choice for Bianca, it’s
simply how she was raised.
Travel enthusiast and animal
lover Bianca Dyer credits
the compassion shown by
her parents to people in
need as the inspiration that
made community service a
part of her life from a young
age. Having volunteered for
several community service
and animal welfare projects
in and out of Australia, a
career in community services
was an easy choice to make.
During her teen years
she watched friends and
2017 Course Guide
schoolmates lose themselves
to drug and alcohol abuse in
an effort to fit in but with the
strong influence of her father
she stayed out of trouble
and always wondered how
she could help others who
didn’t have the same support
she enjoyed. Her personal
experience with people
having drug and alcohol
problems motivated her
further to choose community
services as a path to really
make a difference and
change lives.
“I enrolled at Chisholm for
my Diploma of Community
Services but I was nervous
because I had been out of
school for over 10 years
and getting back into a
study routine was daunting,
but after starting my
course at Chisholm I found
the coursework to be so
interesting and the teachers
extremely helpful, soon I
was on a roll!”
“Moving on to my work
placement I found real life
situations to be drastically
different to classroom
learnings but Chisholm had
prepared me so well, I felt
equipped to handle anything.
The role playing activities in
class especially helped.”
Bianca was nominated for
Most Outstanding Student of
the Year 2015 and has just
completed her Diploma of
Community Services.

COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY
Sam Moriarty
Course: Diploma of
Software Development
Builder turned software
developer, Sam finds his
new career to be far more
intellectually stimulating
and satisfying.
Working in the building
industry straight out of school,
Sam Moriarty always thought
he would be better at a job
that required brain power.
Computers had always held
a special appeal although
he had not quite followed
that path.
“I wanted to be able to
think and not just do. So I
searched online specifically
2017 Course Guide
for computer and software
related courses and found
one at Chisholm that suited
my requirements. When
I started my Diploma of
Software Development I
found the teachers to be my
greatest source of inspiration
and encouragement. I also
made great friends who I keep
in touch with constantly out of
Chisholm too.”
“It was challenging for me
because my background was
in building and construction
and I didn’t know anything
about software but the
teachers at Chisholm made
me feel welcome and they
went above and beyond their
scope to provide guidance
and study materials. Some
teachers were even able
to draw analogies from the
building industry to explain
things to me.”
Having secured a job in
software development
recently, Sam is confident
that the skills he learned at
Chisholm will enable him to
succeed in his brand new
career. He is also currently
enrolled in the Bachelor of
Information Technology at the
La Trobe University and has
had his pathway fast tracked
by transferring credits from his
course at Chisholm.

in this industry.”
“It’s also a good feeling
knowing that I will enjoy what
I do and that I will not get
bored. I love listening to the

apply my skills to provide a
design solution.”

EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION
Hannah Spratt
Course: Diploma of
Early Childhood Education
& Care
Hannah had an interrupted
year 11, which meant she
got a lower than expected
ATAR. Hannah didn’t let this
discourage her though, and
has set about making her
dreams of being an Early
Childhood Educator a reality.
“I’ve wanted to teach children
since I was little, but after
getting a low ATAR, I couldn’t
get into uni. I think it worked
out OK though, because the
teaching style at Chisholm
suited me really well.”

Certificate III
Hannah seized her chance
with Chisholm, and with the
support of her family, threw
herself into her studies.
“I’ve always loved children.
They’re so innocent, and have
so much potential. They could
be anything one day, and I
love knowing that I can help
make that happen.”
“My parents always
encouraged me to work hard,
so I did. I’ve spent lots of time
studying, which is easy when
you enjoy it. All my hard work
has helped me keep a High
Distinction average. I had an
alarm on my phone that went
off at 7am every day. It said
‘Wake up if you want to be a
teacher’. I still have that.”
Hannah has had four job
placements while studying,
gaining valuable experience
and exposure to the industry.
The last one resulted in
Hannah getting a job.
“I literally walked out of class
and into a job. Chisholm
has been great for me. The
teachers care and inspired me
every day.”
Hannah has wanted to
become an early childhood
teacher since she was a
child herself.

EMPLOYMENT PREPARATION
& FOUNDATION
Amanda Cormick
Course: Certificate III
in General Education
for Adults
A General Education
qualification paved the
way for Amanda Cormick
to reinvent herself through
further study.
Having dropped out of
school before completing
Year 12, Amanda’s life
was all about her children.
As a single mother of
four, she understood she
needed to rebuild her
life - but didn’t know how.
Guided by Centrelink, she
came to Chisholm feeling
apprehensive and prepared
to give up if it got too stressful.
2017 Course Guide
Suffering from anxiety
and panic attacks, she
worried about being in a
classroom and interacting
with other adults.
“For so long I had only known
my children and their world
that I had forgotten how to
talk to adults and I hated
high school, so coming back
into a learning environment
was terrifying for me. I was
used to teachers putting me
down and telling me I couldn’t
accomplish anything.”
“But when I came to Chisholm
I experienced the warmest
and most understanding
teachers who took the time
to find out about me, my
strengths, weaknesses
and my fears.”
“They were willing to work
with me at my pace and
gave me all the support I
needed. After I finished my
Certificate III in General Adult
Education I wanted to keep
studying because I could see

ENGINEERING & ELECTRONICS
Jamie Marshall
Course: Diploma of
Engineering Technology
A love of all things
mechanical defined a career
in Mechatronics for Jamie.
“I used to take apart toys
to study their circuits and
I just wanted to learn how
everything worked.”
“The apprenticeship program
I was in recommended the
course at Chisholm and I
2017 Course Guide
knew that I would need
a qualification to progress
in this industry. Enrolling
at Chisholm opened up
pathways I had not yet
discovered and I embraced the
learning environment easily.”
“I studied and worked as an
apprentice simultaneously
and the impact it had on my
work was clearly visible. I was
able to apply what I learned
in class while I was at work.
At Chisholm I even got the
opportunity to work in an
actual mechatronics facility.”
Jamie plans to use the
credits that he has earned at
Chisholm from his Diploma
of Engineering to fast track
a university degree in
engineering in 2016.

HAIR, BEAUTY & MAKE-UP
Sarah Simpson
Course: Certificate
III in Hairdressing –
Apprenticeship
From cutting her parents hair
as an eight year old, through
to creating her own hair
and fashion blogs, Sarah is
passionate about a career in
the hair and beauty industry.
“I moved to Brisbane straight
out of high school, but I came
back to be with family. Being
a couple of years older has
really helped though. It did
take a little while to get back
into studying again, but
with the self-paced learning
that we do, it comes very
naturally.”
“I’ve always loved fashion.
The way styles can change,
shift and come back. You can
get inspired by things and
combine them to create a
whole new look. That’s why I
love hairdressing, it’s all about
fashion and style, and gives
people confidence.”
Self-paced learning is an
approach that gives students
structure and guidance,
but lets them practice and
hone their skills at their own
speed. It has proven to be
very successful with many
students in the Hair and
Beauty learning area.
Since she was a small child,
Sarah had always dreamed of
becoming a hairdresser.
2017 Course Guide
Sarah started her
apprenticeship in a local
salon after moving back to
Melbourne from Brisbane.
“The teachers are really
great. If I have a question, or
need help, they’re always
willing to show me how to do
something – even if it’s after
class, they’re happy to hang
around. All the students help
each other too. I’ve made
some great friends, and we
all help each other learn and
get better.”
With the skills she has gained,
Sarah hopes to one day have
her own salon, as well as
make a name for herself as a
hair, style and fashion blogger
on social media.

HORTICULTURE & LANDSCAPING
Nicholas Swinton
Course: Certificate IV in
Conservation and Land
Management
Nicholas’s passion for the
environment and protecting
endangered animals led him
to a career in conservation.
Based in Zimbabwe while
in the army, Nicholas was
recruited to train AntiPoaching forces to track
down poachers. This
effort took his love of the
environment to another level
by showing him how much he
could do to protect it.
Back in Australia he decided
to formally study the subject
of his passion and when he
2017 Course Guide
searched online he found
exactly what he was looking
for at Chisholm.
“I thought I knew a lot about
the environment but when
I started studying for my
Certificate IV in Conservation
& Land Management at
Chisholm I found out just
how much more there was
to learn. Suddenly I was
learning the science of it all
and I loved it. The learning
environment at Chisholm
was genuinely supportive
and I was surrounded by a
group of people who were
equally passionate about the
same things I was, and these
factors contributed to making
me feel more welcome in a
classroom.”
“I’m really proud of myself
for committing to study
and completing my course
successfully. There is more
meaning to my volunteer
work now and I actually
know what I’m talking about
when I’m in the field. I’m also
closer to my dream of going
back to Africa to protect
endangered animals like
the African Black Rhino.”
Nicholas continues to
volunteer his services for
environmental projects while
he prepares for a long-term
career in conservation.

Joseph found that rebuilding

and now that I’m working, I
realise how well Chisholm
has prepared me because
the real kitchens have the
same environment as the
kitchen at Chisholm.”
An ardent fan of AFL and
Melbourne food culture,
Joseph is proud of the
opportunities he has had to
work in prestigious kitchens
such as the MCG and the
Emirates Lounge.
“Some days when I walk out
of the MCG after work I look
back and have to tell myself
‘you work there!’ because I
can’t believe it myself yet.”
“I have won the International
Student of the Year Award
at Chisholm and also been
nominated as a finalist at the
2015 Victorian International
Education Awards. It makes
me very proud because I
never imagined that I would
be here and achieve all this.”
Joseph continues to study for
a Diploma of Leadership &
Management at Chisholm in
a bid to gain comprehensive
learning and qualifications to
build a foundation for starting
his own business someday.

MASSAGE & MYOTHERAPY
Kathleen
Strachan
Course: Diploma
of Remedial Massage
Kathleen is a returning
student to Chisholm, having
used her initial diploma as
a way to get into a teaching
degree, and now she is back
at Chisholm, adding to her
skill set.
“I got my diploma, and
used that as a pathway to a
teaching degree, and I like
teaching, but I always wanted
a career in massage. I feel
like I can really help people.
I’ve wanted to do a massage
course since I was little.”
Enthusiasm has always
been a key trait for Kathleen,
so when she realised that

“I really like the way the
teachers at Chisholm
approach the subject. It’s very
hands on. While I’ve learned
a lot about anatomy, things
like where muscles attach
and how they move, and
the actual clinics are a great
experience.”
“I also work with a local
football team as a massage
therapist. I do rubs, massage,
and general muscle recovery.
It’s great working with them,
even though I have made a
few cry.”
The student clinic at Chisholm
Frankston campus is where
Kathleen and other students
can get in the practice of
working with real clients,
while teaching staff are
nearby to help.“There are
already a few regulars,
people that come in for

SPORT, RECREATION & FITNESS
Brock Flanagan
Course: Certificate IV in
Guiding/Certificate IV in
Outdoor Recreation
Brock grew up in a small town
in central NSW. The only
occupation options he knew
of were farmer, military and
police, but he’s now started
a new career path to help
himself, and his community.
He always enjoyed the
outdoors, spending a lot of
time exposed to the wonders
of nature and survivalism
through friends, family and
local Aboriginal elders, but
didn’t realise that he could
make a career out of this.
“When I turned 14 I was first
made aware that the outdoors
could be a career path, and I
could teach others and expose
them to it as well.”
2017 Course Guide
Brock travelled around the
country, gaining valuable
life experience, and making
many personal discoveries.
During this time he was often
without a home, and rarely
had much money. Eventually
returning home, Brock saw a
chance to make a difference
with the younger generation
in his home town. With youth
unemployment, depression
and boredom causing
significant problems in the
community, Brock wanted
to help create a solution by
taking his own experiences
and sharing them with others.
“I wanted to make a
difference, but I didn’t have
the qualifications. I couldn’t
afford the course when I
found it, and I couldn’t find
it when I could afford it. I
learned through friends
that the course was offered
at Chisholm, and at a
cheaper cost than I’d seen
previously, so I moved down
to Melbourne and applied. I
didn’t get in initially, but I
kept applying and contacted
the Caroline Chisholm
Education Foundation.
I was determined to make
it in, and this year, I did.”
Brock has a goal of
establishing a camp in the
Wyangala state park with an
emphasis on adult education
and survivalism. The skills
he’s learning in his course are
helping to make it happen.

VCAL & VCE
Sarah
Whatmough
11 12
Course: VCE
Sarah struggled at high
school, but she was
determined to get her VCE,
so studying through Chisholm
was a perfect opportunity.
“Dropping VCE wasn’t an
option I even considered,
I was very set on finishing
year 12. Chisholm offered
me a great solution to
my struggles. Chisholm has
given me the opportunity
to choose the subjects that
I wanted to do, made more
time to prepare for tests, and
made the whole VCE process
a lot simpler, allowing me to
excel and have the time and
energy to achieve my goals.”
2017 Course Guide
Switching to Chisholm
has helped Sarah go from
a constant struggle with
school, to winning awards for
consistent effort, as well as
given her the skills she needs
to plan for future success.
“I have learnt so much and I
have made lifelong friends,
learnt respect, organisational
skills and developed a large
amount of independence.”
Chisholm’s greater focus
on self-paced learning,
and teaching staff willing
to spend more time
explaining the key points
of the lessons, has been a
particular help for Sarah.
“The independence and
environment is totally
different from high school.
There is a lot of freedom at
Chisholm and the teachers
are trying to benefit you.
They have completely altered
my perception of the teacherstudent relationship as
students are treated as adults
and as equals.”
Sarah has enjoyed her
studies at Chisholm, and now
sees many opportunities for
further study, and working
towards employment in
her chosen fields of health
promotion or psychology.
