To open a bank account, you need to bring these documents to the banker: A proof of identity (ID, passport) A proof of residence Checks Checks in France are often used, especially to have a mobile phone or rent an apartment. Your credit card (about 30€ per year) and your checkbook (free) will arrive one week after your account opening. Your code number will be sent in your accommodation address, so be careful about your information. Do not hesitate to give your mobile phone number to your bank in case they need some more information. In case of loss or theft of the credit card or check book, you must immediately stop the card or check book (“faire opposition”) by calling the phone number your bank gave you Travelers Checks Traveler’s checks are NOT easy to cash in France, because you must go to a bank and banking hours are not very practical. You can instead use an international credit card such as Visa or MasterCard. American Express is recognized as well but is far less easily accepted. As well, if your credit card has a pin code, almost all ATMs will allow you to withdraw Euros using these credit cards. But be sure to check with your bank concerning the charges and exchange rate applied when using the card in France in shops AND withdrawing money from ATMs. Other spending During your journey, you will spend a lot of money at your arrival: Your rent (which depends on your Maisel room). Note that you can benefit from the CAF which pays you a part of your rent. Maisel membership cost (around 150€ non-refund) Maisel deposit (arounf 450€) House insurance (around 40€ for one year, please contact school life office) Food Dishes (5 €) Public transport: count 70€/month for unlimited trips with the Imagin’r Card Other: clothes, associations, school stationery… Mobiles The main companies are: SFR, http://www.sfr.fr Orange, www.orange.fr Bouygues Telecom, www.bouyguestelecom.fr The others: Free Mobile, Virgin Mobile, Nrj Mobile, Lebara, Sosh, B&You, Universal Mobile, La Poste mobile- Have a look on Internet for more detailed information. There are three types of mobile subscriptions: Prepaid card: you buy a Sim card and you top up your mobile phone when you don’t have credits anymore. The inconvenient is that the companies don’t offer good deals. Lock subscription: the best for those who want to call in France and also worldwide without paying any extras charges. The company takes the money from your bank account every month. (Need a bank account in France: go on the ). When you leave France, you call to stop the subscription. Normal subscription: if you know that you just call and send SMS/MMS in France, it’s the best choice because it’s cheaper but if you call worldwide, the company is going to take more money in your bank account than the subscription price. (need a bank account in France) What’s on the market? Prepaid card: If you want to call and send SMS in France and worldwide, the best offer is LEBARA MOBILE (you can check the price list according to the country you are calling on the website http://www.lebara.fr/prepaye/tarifs). There is no unlimited SMS or Internet in this prepaid card. You just need to go to the “TABAC” (cigar store) to top up your mobile. Lock subscription: (without engagement, need a bank account in France Normal subscription: (without engagement, need a bank account in France) You can compare prices here http://www.comparatel.fr/cartes-sim-seules.html FRENCH SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING Grande École d’ingénieurs Supervised by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Rouen (CCIR) Member of the French Conference of Management and Engineering Schools (CGE) Member of the French Conference of Directors of Engineering Schools (CDEFI) Fully recognized by the French Government Engineer : a prestigious title in France after 5 years of higher studies Engineering degree signed by the representative of the ministry of higher education and accredited by the commission of engineering titles (CTI) A balanced education in technological skills, humanities and individual development 12 Majors electronic systems of telecommunication communications networks architecture and security information systems engineering engineering of embedded systems automation and industrial robotics electrical engineering and transports mechatronics and electrical engineering energy and sustainable development biomedical engineering business engineer finance engineer Founded in 1901, ESIGELEC has now a long experience in the domains of education, research and development, international and industrial relations. The curriculum includes 8 bilingual technical majors (English-French). The school faculty includes native English-speaking teachers and lecturers. Industry links These links form a crucial part of the curriculum : each student dedicates 200 academic hours in the second and third years of their engineering cycle to projects recommended by companies, giving them the opportunity to work in conditions comparable to those of the industrial world. Each project involves a group of 6 students. Three work placements in France and abroad, prepare engineering undergraduates for their entry into professional life. Representatives of the school’s industrial partners sit on panels that assess results of students’ internships, on the Development Committee and the Board of Governors, teach and lecture, maintain links with school’s graduates and pay compulsory statelevied apprenticeship charge. ESIGELEC leads also development contracts, technological consultancy, in-service training. Internships are done by students (from 4 weeks minimum to 9 months). There are work placements at three levels, as an unskilled worker, a technician and an engineer. There is also the opportunity for the students to do an Intercalary course (sandwich year) : possibility of working a full year between the 2nd and 3rd of the engineering course. Research The Institute for research and development in Electronic and Embedded Systems or IRSEEM meets research requirements of automotive, aeronautical, electronics and telecommunications industries. 3 poles : - Electronics & Systems (electromagnetism, EMC, microwaves), - Automatics & Systems (control and diagnosis), - Instrumentation, Computer Science & Systems (intelligent transport, instrumentation and embedded systems). Capital of Normandy and fifth largest port in France, Rouen is a hub of commerce. It is a city of half a million people. Located 60 kilometers from the English Channel, Rouen played an important part in French and English history. Joan of Arc was burned at the stake there in 1431. Rouen is a town full of monuments and art, and the Museum of Fine Arts has the largest collection of Impressionist art outside Paris. NORMANDY in the west of France and Europe, is a beautiful region, with leading economic sectors such as automobile, aeronautics, telecommunications, information and communication technologies, research and development... ESIGELEC has just moved in 2004 onto a dedicated Science Park which already houses several other higher education institutions (INSA, the University science departments), companies, research centers, as well as large-scale facilities for aeronautics and automotive research. The new site provides 12,000 sq.m of modern architecture for teaching and research activities, including 3 amphitheatres of 120 to 250 seats, 1 amphitheaters of 420 seats, and lecture rooms, research facilities, laboratories, self-service computer equipment, a multimedia language room, and permanent wifi access to Internet... Photothèque de l’Office de Tourisme de Rouen - Photo de L. Lenoir Interview I am, Deepak DANG, indian student in the international field (Engineering Program) in ESIGELEC. The reasons which led me to choose ESIGELEC to continue my studies are numerous and important : first of all, the education is dynamic and opened to the international; dynamic because this school encourages and helps its students to form by the way of several trainings (Format in a company of variable duration between 1 month and 9 months, dependent on the year of studies); and opened to the international because its students are supposed to have an experience at least abroad. Besides, ESIGELEC knows the importance of English in the world of the work and it is for it that its students are also supposed to obtain the TOEIC (Test of International English for Communication) to have their degree. All this is strengthened by the possibility of following a bilingual forming English - French in the specialization. Then, ESIGELEC introduces its students in the world of the work due to the project engineer: a technological project of a high level given by a company and made by 6 students during the 2nd and 3rd year. This project is accompanied with some « mini - projects » made during the 2nd year, in computer, electronic etc. Moreover many people from industrial partners of the school come to teach in some courses and bring their experience and knowledge to the students… Finally, it is necessary as well to say as there is not only work in the life and effectively one can find in ESIGELEC of activities extra school as associations : desk of sports, International Relations, Official reception, etc. which help to enrich our social life.
