ear parents and friends,
Cardinal Newman suggested in his great
work ‘the Idea of a University’ that no
amount of planning or organising can create
a genius loci - a kind of soul in a place - that can
provide an environment in which learning
takes place almost naturally. To achieve a genius
loci that helps boys to love God, their school,
each other and their Masters is not the work
of planning, but of people. (Though planning,
people tell me, is important too ... )
A great deal of love from a great many people has been put into the College over the last
six years, and particularly this last term. We
have had a few surprises, but it has been a
happy, peaceful and loving term.
So, at the end of 2008, I need to thank you
all for all your support, love and prayer
throughout the year. We thank especially our
new Chaplain, Father Talbot, who has been
welcomed enthusiastically by all and has
already made his mark on the College.
It has been a busy term too: photographic
society, debates, quizz nights, five (yes, five!)
theatrical presentations, choir engagements
inside and outside the College, a rugby match,
won comfortably 80-30 ... We have all been
working, playing and praying hard. Christmas
holidays will be very welcome.
I shall let your boys explain what all the
photos mean. They say a picture is worth a
thousand words. God bless you all!
Merry Christmas, and a blessed 2009.
F. D. McDermott,
