2015 Report to the Membership
From the Managing Director
It seems at the end of every year, the key measure of EWTA’s success I use for this report focuses on the growing
number of member companies who have chosen to join the association. EWTA’s membership numbers have been
trending upward for the last six years. We broke past the 100-member goal in 2014 with 105 members, reached 110
in 2015, and are on track to gain even more support in 2016.
But the meaning of our growing membership base goes beyond the upward arcing line on a chart. The monetary dues paid by our members enable EWTA to take a meaningful role in supporting industry research; more so
this year than ever before. In 2015, EWTA was able to fund APA-backed research projects totaling $46,000. That’s
$31,000 more than we funded in 2014 and we’re on track to offer similar support in 2016. Our contributions to
these studies — ranging from videography for an advanced wall framing study to the testing of potential offgassing of VOCs by various engineered wood products — help advance the industry, and could not happen without the support of our member companies. I’m proud of our ever-growing association, and you — our members —
should be proud too. Your contributions play a meaningful role in advancing knowledge and building meaningful
business relationships throughout the industry.
As we shift our focus to a new year, I want to extend my thanks to each of you for your strong support of EWTA.

As 2015 drew to a close, the association reported the highest
membership numbers in its history. EWTA member companies reached 110 in 2015, surpassing the membership count
of 105 in 2014. Membership numbers have been climbing
steadily since 2009.
Thirteen new (and returning former) members were added
to the roster this year, while eight left the association, for a net
membership gain of five member companies.
By category, EWTA now has 12 members in the Consulting/Services category, 36 members in the Materials/Supplies
category, and 62 members in the Equipment/Tooling category.

Communications
EWTA launched its Member Logo Program
this year, which members can use to publicize
their affiliation with EWTA through their
electronic or hard copy correspondence and
publications. Five separate logos were created, each which celebrates a membership
milestone. The logos will be released to members upon receipt of 2016 dues. EWTA also
filed the EWTA name with the United States
Patent and Trademark Office.
EWTA’s Supplier Awards program honors
member companies each year for the quality
of their service and products, as determined
by APA member mills. Five EWTA companies were honored this year (see page 11)
during the Chairman’s Dinner at the APA
annual meeting last November. The companies will also be featured prominently in the
spring issue of the Engineered Wood Journal.
EWTA continues to publish its Engineered
Wood Journal on a twice-yearly basis, as well
as its electronic Connections newsletter every
other month. Fall 2015 Journal stories included a 70th anniversary feature on EWTA’s
history, a story on the benefits of thermally

modified wood, and an update on the new Globally Harmonized System of classifying and labeling chemicals. The results of EWTA’s annual
Business Outlook Survey were published in the spring 2015 Journal, continuing a long-standing tradition of gathering and publishing members’
perspectives on the state of the industry.
The print edition of the Journal is distributed free of charge by mail to U.S. and Canadian engineered wood product manufacturers, suppliers, consultants, analysts, academia and other industry stakeholders. Recipients can also elect to receive it via email. Current and past issues are
posted on the EWTA website at www.engineeredwood.org.
The recently redesigned EWTA website continues to serve as a portal for industry and member information with over 21,000 page views in
2015. Recent and past issues of the Engineered Wood Journal magazine and Connections electronic newsletters are available to read online, a
calendar lists all of EWTA’s upcoming deadlines and important dates, and Info Fair information is just a click away. The website also features an
up-to-date membership list with links to member company contacts and web pages.
Other EWTA communications activities include the distribution of APA’s monthly housing starts and quarterly production reports, as well as
the distribution of the spring membership directory.

EWTA’s annual Info Fair supplier
exhibition— the association’s biggest networking event of the year — drew 75 exhibitors this year, with 58 of those exhibitors signing on as event sponsors. Info

Awards Program
EWTA’s Supplier Awards Program is one way EWTA members can gain recognition by APA member firms. Included
in the program are the Supplier of the Year Awards, which
honored five EWTA members this year, and Innovation of
the Year (postponed in 2015; to be held in 2016). All supplier award winners are selected by votes of APA member
representatives.
The Innovation of the Year Award recognizes new products or services offered by EWTA members that have demonstrated a positive impact in the field.
The Supplier of the Year Awards are based on the quality, service and delivery of EWTA member products and
services to APA member companies. Awards are presented
for each of EWTA’s membership categories: Equipment and
Tooling, Materials and Supplies, and Consulting and Services.
Winners of the Supplier of the Year awards were honored
during an awards ceremony at the APA Annual Meeting and
will also be featured prominently in the spring 2016 issue of
the Engineered Wood Journal.

Industry Support
As EWTA’s membership has grown, so has the association’s support of research that helps advance understanding and knowledge in the industry.
In 2015, EWTA was pleased to support four APA projects with budgeted funding totaling $46,000.
n EWTA supported APA’s advanced framing demonstration house project. Funding was used to support production of two videos — an
Advanced Framing Systems video and an I-Joist Framing video — made during the construction of a residence in the Chicago area. The
videos will become part of APA’s market education program.
n EWTA also helped fund operations and research at the hygrothermal research test hut at the APA Tacoma campus. The project monitors
the hygrothermal performance of various insulation materials in wall construction when used in conjunction with wood structural panel
sheathing.
n Additional funding will supplement ongoing APA studies of the
industrial market, allowing the association to update and conduct
more in-depth studies of wood market usage trends in industrial
markets.
n Finally, EWTA contributed to a study of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) from engineered wood products. The funding will
help support an APA study of emissions from structural panels,
glued-laminated timber, I-joists and LVL. The study will provide
useful background on this emerging environmental issue.
EWTA has a history of supporting research projects that benefit APA
and EWTA members — and the engineered wood products industry as
a whole. Over the past 15 years, EWTA’s research funding has totaled
nearly $200,000.
EWTA’s support of APA and industry efforts is scheduled to continue
in 2016, with budgeted funding of $50,000 recommended for five projects benefitting the engineered wood industry.

Budget
EWTA finished 2015 on firm financial footing. Year-end figures confirm
that EWTA had a budget surplus resulting in year-end reserves in excess
of $150,000. The growing reserve allows EWTA even greater flexibility
in financially supporting APA industry research, technical and market
development activities. The upward trend of increasing reserves underscores strong member support leading to financial success of EWTA’s
three main sources of revenue — membership dues, Info Fair and income from Engineered Wood Journal advertising sales.
EWTA’s growing membership base has contributed to financial gains
for the association. Membership dues exceeded expectations; surpassing the original budget amount. Info Fair also contributed significantly
to EWTA’s bottom line with 75 exhibitors (58 of which were sponsors).
Net income from the supplier exhibition was well above the budgeted
amount. The Engineered Wood Journal continues to be published inhouse, resulting in significant financial gains. Advertising in the Journal
remains strong, with increased revenue in 2015 as compared to 2014.
EWTA’s diverse income sources — and the success of these sources —
keep EWTA financially strong.
