GATE 3 - Global Alliance for Transformational Entertainment
Founder’s Letter
Welcome to GATE 3 and GATE Transformational Story Conference 2013.
In the year since GATE 2, there have been many exciting developments at GATE, some of which you will hear about
during the programs.
I am especially pleased to announce that we received our 501(c)3 accreditation which enables us to accept tax-deductible donations and grants us other benefits that will catalyze the development of our global work. Also, we will receive the
Producers Guild of America “Visionary Award” this coming April, a milestone in our quest to bring the GATE vision / mission to
the professional entertainment community and beyond.
In the field of aeronautics, as a pilot, we use the phrase, “time of useful consciousness” to
describe the period of time from the interruption of the oxygen supply to the time when useful function
is lost, and the individual is no longer capable of taking proper corrective and protective action.
We live now in a window of time where we can still take protective and corrective action to
positively impact our environment and our human consciousness. However, that time is limited so,
as pilots in our individual and collective journeys, we are now in a global time of useful consciousness.
Why does GATE do the work it is doing?
GATE’s efforts in support of our threefold mission – education, connection and collaboration and advocacy -- can be
seen as offering impetus to the kinds of protective and corrective action that content creators can provide to the world’s mass audiences through their various creative expressions.
As GATE moves forward this year and we embark on a new voyage of focusing on development and creating a deeper
organizational foundation and stability, I take delight and inspiration in the words of Buckminster Fuller: “You never change
things by fighting existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete.”
And, in the words of Keith Richards, “...and anyway, if you don’t make bold moves, you don’t get f***ing anywhere.
You’ve got to push the limits.”
In this regard, I hope that the programs and initiatives offered by GATE now, and in the future, will help bring about a
new understanding and experience in the entertainment, media and arts communities that help everyone express their full creative potential in facilitating personal, social and global transformation. Let us all recall that seminal line from the movie, MindWalk, “Healing the Universe is an Inside Job.” May we all practice it and live it fully.
I welcome your support of GATE, in all forms, to help us continue our work and fulfill our vision: “Transforming the
World by Transforming Entertainment and Media.”
Thank you for being here and creating and sharing in the potent energy of transformation.

The GATE Story
In 1979 the seeds of GATE were humbly sown when a small committed group
of actors, musicians, writers, business professionals and others joined together to
teach meditation to members of the entertainment and media communities.
Reception was abundantly positive, but it was just a niche group then.
However, in these past 30+ years a remarkable sea change has occurred.
The growth of awareness has been dramatic. Interest in spirituality, healing,
peace, ecological issues and other progressive concerns and affinity values has
mushroomed exponentially. As R. Buckminster Fuller said, “Humanity is in
‘final exam’ as to whether or not it qualifies for continuance in Universe.”
Today, more people than ever realize the actuality of this proclamation.
GATE was formally inaugurated on June 4, 2009, at the Zanuck Theater
on the Fox Studios lot in Los Angeles. About 500 people from the entertainment,
media and body/mind/spirit communities attended the event.
Interest was unprecedented, and demand for seats far exceeded
capacity: 1500 people were turned away.
Hosted by GATE founder /chairman John Raatz and
honorary founder/actor /activist Jim Carrey, a keynote talk by honorary
founder/author/spiritual leader Eckhart Tolle galvanized the group.
Presentations were made by industry professionals from film, television,
music, and publishing. Melissa Etheridge and Donovan provided musical
entertainment. Presenters and audience members alike enthusiastically
endorsed and applauded the birth of the GATE movement, recognizing the
role that entertainment and media plays in projecting our reality, and
supporting the transformation of these industries in order to make
those projections more positive and life enhancing.
The threefold mission of the Global Alliance for Transformational Entertainment
seeks to empower entertainment and media professionals and companies to
produce and distribute content that inspires new awareness-based worldviews
for global audiences by providing:
1. Education – Resources and guidance supporting members’ personal, inner education
thereby assisting them in deepening their fundamental connection with themselves which, once
achieved, results in the desire to express that essential sense of self and personal transformation
in and through their work. Issues education:
support to bring to awareness responsibility for
the ideas, issues and events that are shaping the
world we live in – for both “good and ill.” And
mentorship -- giving back and supporting the
next generation of industry professionals.
2. Connection & Collaboration – Resources
and services to help members in the entertainment and media businesses, who are living a
transformational lifestyle, to connect with their
like-spirited peers. GATE offerings will encourage collaboration to create content that expresses
transformational intentions and values.
3. Advocacy (Trade and Public) – Within the
trade, support to help the larger media and entertainment communities understand transformation and its importance in a cultural and
global context, and to help them become comfortable with the reality of transformation. In the
public arena, to help legitimize the genre of
transformational entertainment and of transformational content in the media.
What is GATE?
