Villas at Five Ponds Executive Board
OUTSIDE PAINTING SCHEDULE
As a reminder the “outside homes” painting project was scheduled
to begin the week of June 20th, weather permitting. This project
will last about 6 weeks. For the few who wanted to pay an additional fee and have the color of their door changed, if your name was
not been received by the property manager by June 13th, your door
will be painted the same color it is currently.
For those who have made the request to the property manager—their door will not be painted until the end of the community
project.
DAMAGES
The Board certainly recognizes that the great majority of the residents act properly in the community.
Unfortunately, we continue to experience undesirable issues
caused by a few.
• An unreported broken fill pipe at the indoor pool;
• An unreported broken microphone in the ballroom;
• An unreported street light that was “hit” on Fairway Drive.
Unfortunately, these types of occurrences require outlays of
community funds to resolve them, ultimately these costs are funded
by all residents.
DRIVEWAY COATING
Once all driveways that were not done are completed in the fall of
2015 are seal coated, the vendor will re-stencil our clubhouse parking lot, an e-mail notice will be sent to insure all cars are off the lot
for that one day and night.
The next thing that will be addressed is the places where extra
dark filling was used to seal cracks, both in the driveways and streets
that have “opened up” they will be re-sealed, under warranty work.
All driveways and streets will then be examined for “new major
cracks.” Once we understand what the cost of sealing new/additional cracks will be, the Board will make a decision whether to move
forward on having them sealed.

SHOWTIME
n Ron
Dorfman
ON WEDNESDAY, June 15th, Judy and Michael Muldawer of
Albuquerque, NM entertained a packed Villas at Five Ponds
Ballroom with their Tin Pan Alley Tales & Tunes.
The show started with a 15 minute video of vintage Muppet
performances of Tin Pan Alley favorites from the 70s. It was interesting seeing the ageless Miss Piggy singing with long gone celebrities
like Danny Kaye. The Muppet fountain of youth and energy is timeless—we should all weather so well.
Unfortunate glitches in our new sound system did not deter
Judy and Michael. They played ukulele and guitar while reprising
many of the familier melodies and commenting on the history for
an enjoyable afternoon.
Many thanks to Len Jaffee and Reeva Eisenberg for volunteering
to arrange for the Muldawers and host this event. Their efforts were
most appreciated!

games last year. “I was calm, I was focused, I
was locked in,” James said. Cleveland did it after a coaching change with Tyron Lue taking
over in January for the fired Davis Blatt. “We
made history tonight,” Lue said for Cleveland
Ohio, “we’re coming back baby.”
Kyrie Irving scored 26 points to cap his
brilliant finals, including a three pointer over
Curry with 53 seconds left. Curry sat briefly on
the bench to take in the scene after the Warriors
made their last basket with 4:39 left. “It hurts
man,” Curry said. “Just proud of every single
guy that stepped foot on the floor for our team
this year, hopefully we’ll have many more opportunities to fight for the Championship and
be on this stage because this is what it’s all
about. Green had 32 points 15 rebounds and
9 assists, but the Warriors record setting season ended without the prize this close knit.“
Strength in numbers he knew and cared about
from way back in the beginning through their
record 24-0 start as coach of the year Steve Kerr
was out, Curry’s second regular season wins to
break the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls mark.
As Cleveland celebrated in the trophy
ceremony, Green returned to the floor to congratulate the Cav’s. He stopped by the winning
locker room, too, and Warriors G.M. brought
in the cut nets. Golden State might always be
remembered as one of the best teams ever that
doesn’t close it out, and Green is taking deal of
the blame after he sat out game 5 on Monday
night suspended for flagrant fouls.
The Cavs started off with elimination twice
to force a game 7 at Orade Arena, where the
Warriors went up 2.0 with a pair of lopsided
wins to start the series. Cleveland also became
the fourth team to win an NBA game 7 on the
road. Curry, who said before hand he would
need the best game of his career—scored
17 points on 6 for 19 shooting while Splash
Brother Klay Thompson added 14 points, while
making 6 of 17 shots. “I didn’t do enough to
bring my team wins, Curry said. It will haunt
me for a while.”
Continues on page14
Photos: Ron Dorfman
FOR THOSE OF YOU that watched the 7th
game of the NBA finals, you saw the one of the
greatest games ever played. The tension was
from start to finish seeing the most gifted and
amazing players that I have ever seen!
Both teams had the purest swishing 3
pointers of all time. There is no doubt that
Stephen Curry (no. 30) is the best and purest
shooter of all time. And the Cleveland Cavaliers
deserve a lot of credit coming back from a 3-1
deficit. A feat never done in the NBA finals ever,
ever, ever! Yet the Cavs won 4 straight.
An interesting fact is that more money
was bet on Sunday’s game 7 between the Cavs
and Warriors than any other NBA game ever,
according to William Hill’s Nevada sports book,
it took 3 times more bets and 3 times the handle on game 7 than any other regular season
game. The West gate Las Vegas Super book said
game 7 also was a record for its shop with more
than a million dollars already bet 3 hours before tip off. The size of the bets was also higher
than normal with some six figure bets reported.
Note! Drake, the rap entertainer lost a record
$60,000. LeBron James cradled the shiny gold
trophy and struggled to sum up what might be
the sweetest championship yet, the one he is
so proudly bringing home to his native northeast Ohio just as he promised to do when he
returned to the Cavaliers two summers ago.
Later, “flanked by his three children on
Father’s Day, a cigar between his lips and winning net as a necklace with the lingering stench
of Champagne, James began to understand the
magnitude of his accomplishment for Cleveland
after a half century wait.” “I’m coming home
with what I said I was going to do,” he said,
adding, “I can’t wait to get off the plane, hold
that trophy up and see all the fans at the terminal.” James and his relentless—never count
them out—Cavs pulled off an impossible NBA
Finals comeback, and Cleveland is title town
again at last. James delivered on a vow to his
home state and brought the Cavs back from
the brink as they became the first team to rally
from a 3-1 finals deficit, beating the defending champion Golden State Warriors 93-89 on
Sunday night to end a 52 year major sports
championship drought in Cleveland. I’ve never
seen a man in my life tell an entire state: “Get
on my back, I got you. Get on my back and I’m
going to carry you. I don’t care if we fail, I’m
going to wake up the next morning and I’m
going to start working out and prepare for next
year,” Richard Jefferson said. ”He was like, I’m
going to come back home because I promised
them that I would do something.” And he carried us the whole way.”
In a testy series of blowouts the winner
take all Game 7 provided the thrilling finale
with James as the MVP disarming two time
reigning MVP Stephen Curry and his record
setting Warriors. The native of Akron rattled
off moments from the lengthy list of Cleveland
sports heartbreak and said what it meant for
him personally bring the Cleveland Cavs their
first championship. Playing his sixth straight finals, James almost single-handedly carried the
Cavs back into the series and finished with 27
points, 11 assists and 11 rebounds as the Cavs
gave their city its first major sports winner since
the Browns won the NFL title in 1964. He also
had 3 blocked shots and two steals, overcoming five turnovers.
An emotional James fell to the floor when
this one ended with a second win in a week
on Golden State’s imposing floor, surrounded
by his teammates. Only moments earlier, he
went down in pain 10.6 seconds left after being
fouled by Draymond Green while going for a
dunk, then came back out to make the second
of two free throws.
After four successful seasons in Miami and
two titles with the Heat, James came back to
the Cavs in hope of winning the title for this
franchise and Championship starved city so
coveted. It took a second try against Golden
State after Cleveland lost to the Warriors in six

EVENT CENTER n Ron Dorfman
LUTHER WOODS is
a privately owned and

WE WERE LOOKING for an early light dinner before a show and found Social
Still—a five minute drive from the Sands Casino Event Center in Bethlehem.
The restaurant/bar has plenty of parking—but the lot signage is
misdirected and confusing. The interior of this converted bank building
features a massive modern “still” (of course) and a huge open bank vault.
The hard and high surfaces—typical in a bank—are upholstered with sound
baffles to diminish the echo. It’s visually bright, clean and interesting with a
large bar and mixed high and low wood tables.
The wait staff and management were cordial and helpful, but the food
was disappointing. An á la carte spaghetti with shrimp bowl ($18) was dry
and tasteless. Additional garlic butter sauce didn’t help the lack of seasoning.
Bread for the pasta dish? None available except for stale wafers salvaged from
an onion soup base. The onion soup (the only soup offered) was good, in a
small crock, but with more “bread wafers” than onions. Artificial sweetener
for coffee? Not available. My “special” burger was topped with the thinnest
veneer of Boursin cheese. It was described as “on a brioche.” Not so, it had a
rather ordinary bun (remember, no bread available.) My error in choice.
Oh yeah, the drinkers seemed happier.

BE A PART of the 2016 Craft Show Committee. Lots of support is
required to ensure an effective show. Not only on the day of the
show which is obvious, but much help is required behind the scenes
months before the event.
Some areas in which you can help & special jobs I need to plan
in advance are as follows:
Publicity: Emailing publicity notices via internet; distributing flyers;
and if everyone gets a gift card/certificate from a favorite store,
business, restaurant that would be tremendous. If you own or work
for a business, please offer to donate gift cards for the Grand Raffles.
• Desperately needed! If you are computer “savvy”, that would be
great. Publicity via the internet is “key” in spreading the word
about the show.

• Banker for the Day—keeping track of the monies and details on

AS THE SAYING GOES “Nothing stays the same forever.”
There are not enough words to thank Sandi for what
she has done over the past 10 years. No one realizes how
much work went into the preparation for the Mah Jong

Whenever there was work to be done on any committee,
we could always count on Sandi to pitch in and help.
Nothing was ever too much. Thank you for everything.

each and every function ran smoothly. What a great job
she did on the Fashion Show at Spring Mill along with her
committee. And it went on without a hitch. Nothing I asked
her to do was too much. Thank you for everything, you will
also be missed.
Everyone serving on the Social Committee works
extremely hard. Some people tend to forget that we are all
volunteers. We try our best to bring activities and events
to this community that are interesting and fun. We always
need and welcome new workers and members of the
community support us.
Happy July 4th!

At the June Bingo, Barbara Kains announced that
evening was the last Bingo she would run. Barbara has been
in charge of the Bingo for about 8 years, and now she is
retiring.
The preparation for this event is always a lot of work.
The shopping for the food, ordering donuts, and the setting
up. I can’t begin to thank her enough for a job extremely
well done. We will miss you!
Let me also thank all of those who have worked with
her. Liz Lazenka and Bev Kelly who worked in the kitchen
cooking, Sandy Rubin for collecting the money for food
purchased, Reba Grossman for signing the players in.
Also, Maxine Dubin, Selma Fisher, Wendy Petchon, and
Peter Kains, and Rich Gittis for being the banker. If I have
left anyone out I am sorry.
There is a Bingo scheduled for November. We need
someone to step up and take charge. Barbara will be happy
to show you how and what has to be done.
I am sorry to say that Sandi Spivack and Aileen Salus
have resigned as Co-Chairs of the Ways and Means
Committee.

THANKS AGAIN to my Five Ponds’ neighbors and friends for your cards,
telephone calls and assorted goodies following my recent hip replacement
surgery. Your thoughtfulness and kindness are sincerely appreciated.
~Barry Ackerman
I WOULD LIKE TO THANK my wonderful friends and neighbors for their
many cards and phone calls and visits during my recovery from knee
surgery. It is really great living in this community, where so many people
are concerned with their neighbors welfare.
~Fred Gold
THANK YOU so much for your
many kindnesses on the passing
of my mother. The phone calls,
cards, donations and meals did
much to help my family and me at
a difficult time. What a consolation it has been to live amongst
such caring people.
My mother, Rose Rubin, lived
to the age of 106. She lived alone
in her own home until she was
100, then moved to an apartment at Sunrise and ultimately to
assisted living there. She still got
around on a walker and was lucky
Rose Rubin & daughter,
Bev Samson.
enough to maintain a sharp mind
until the very end. She also tried
to retain as much independence as she could and controlled how she
lived and how she died. She was a wonderful cook and baker, continuing to do this until she was 100 years old.
As we live and age in our wonderful community, we should remember how important it is to stay as active mentally and physically as we
can, and to do what we love. Our community offers us many opportunities to do this My mother’s legacy of independence inspires me, and I
hope it may inspire you as well.
Again, my thanks for your kindness and concern during a difficult
time for my family. Warmest wishes,
~Beverly Samson
MEN’S CLUB n Berny Dubin
MEN, we invite you to join our club. The cost is exorbitant but, I think you
may be able to handle it, our due is only $0.00.
We just had Chris Wheeler as a dinner speaker at Lambert’s and the cost
was only $32 for salad, bread, coffee and soda a choice of three different
meals, cake and ice cream. Everyone who was there really enjoyed it.
I would say that a community that has about 200 men and only have
37 men signed up to have dinner with the men of our community does not
say a lot for the men who live here. This is an active over fiftyfive community.
Why don’t you participate?
Call me, Berny Dubin 215-674-5916, so I can put you on the e-mail list.

NBA—Continued from page 8
President Obama, an avid Basketball fan, returned to Washington aboard
Air Force One late Sunday as the game entered it’s final tense minutes. He
watched until the end and did not come down the stairs until moments
after the Cavs win. He was so taken aback. This time it will be Cleveland
hosting the Victory parade. A year ago at home, the Cavs had to watch
Golden State win its first title in 40 years.
“Now we have our own parade,” said Irving.” And we’ll celebrate in
Cleveland. Cavaliers James missed scoring 30 points for the first time in
his last 5 game 7’s. The Warriors and the Cavs faced off in their 13th finals
game in 2 seasons matching the highest total in NBA history. Warriors
Golden State played their first finals game 7 in franchise history. Not since
the Oakland Athletics won the World Series in 1974 has a Bay Area team
won a Championship at its home venue.

OH WHAT ANOTHER great evening for our Cooking Club! Barry
Sexton of Opinionated Pallet, accomplished chef, food stylist

savored, During the evening he graciously provided us with clever
tips that we can incorporate in our own recipes. The evening was
