dear friends,
Thank you for joining us for Opera Atelier’s production of Lully's masterpiece, Persée.
We count it a great privilege to be able to interpret this masterwork for a third time in our careers. The
fact that this production — finally complete in all of its details — will tour to the Royal Opera House of
Versailles following our Toronto run is a source of great pride and joy for all of us.
We do not, however, wish the excitement of Persée to detract from the importance of our upcoming
2014-15 season. At Opera Atelier we have never produced an opera which we do not believe in
profoundly — from both a musical and dramatic point of view. Consequently, we have agonized for many
years over what would be the ideal major Handel opera to add to Opera Atelier’s repertoire. For our
2014-15 season, we have at last unanimously decided upon Alcina — Handel's ravishing magic opera,
which is a showcase for all we hold most important in Opera production. Alcina will be coupled with our
own edition of the Berlioz version of Gluck's Orpheus and Eurydice.
Both of these operas explore states of enchantment while blurring the lines between reality and dreams.
Taken together, they are certain to provide you with a deeply satisfying season of magic and wonder.
Please join us.

Message from the executive director
This is an extraordinarily exciting time for Opera Atelier. We are about
to embark on a return tour to the Palace of Versailles. Next season we
are realizing our dream of mounting our first full-scale Handel opera, the
magnificent Alcina. Next year we will be bringing OA’s signature style to
the stage of the La Scala Opera House in Milan. And we continue to offer
our loyal and growing Toronto audiences exquisite period opera and ballet,
which is on display today in our landmark production of this long-forgotten
Baroque masterpiece.
Many people have helped us on this incredible journey; without them, we
could not have realized this ambitious dream. There are too many to name in this limited space, but
I would like to extend a particular thank-you to the City of Toronto, the Ontario Ministry of Tourism,
Culture & Sport, and the Canada Council for the Arts for their support of our upcoming tour to
Versailles, France.
I also want to take this opportunity to tell you about a few changes that we have made to our
performance schedule in our upcoming 2014-2015 season, in the hope of offering our patrons
more convenient and flexible opportunities to join us at the theatre. We will continue to present six
performances of each of our two operas, but those performances will be spread out over a slightly longer
timeframe. Our opening night will fall on a Thursday rather than Saturday, and our closing Saturday
evening performance will now be a late matinée to allow patrons to enjoy a lovely dinner out on the town
following the performance. Please visit our customer service desk in the lobby for more information and
to subscribe to our upcoming season.
Thank you for being with us today. I hope to see you again in the fall!

Message from the chair
Artist Biogr aphies
When I joined the Board of Directors of Opera Atelier twelve years ago,
I had a very introductory understanding of 17th and 18th century French
Baroque opera in all of its dimensions. Since that time, I have been
privileged to witness the dynamic growth of this talented company and
the tremendous success it has enjoyed over the years. From performing
in the Walker Court at the Art Gallery of Ontario in those earlier days to
performing on the beautiful stage of the Royal Opera House at Versailles
in 2012 and again this year, it has been a remarkable journey for our artists
and supporters alike.
I want to thank you, our core audience here in Toronto, for the enthusiasm and support you have shown
us over the years. You have inspired us to new levels of achievement and have been the important
foundation for our continuing success.
I have found my involvement with Opera Atelier to be a personally enriching experience and I invite any of
you who might wish to volunteer with us to let me know. I may be reached at [email protected].
I can assure you that your involvement will be much appreciated and very rewarding in a great many ways.
Thank you again for being with us today and I hope that you enjoy the performance.

Choreogr apher
Jeannette Lajeunesse Zingg
Canadian choreographer Jeannette Lajeunesse Zingg has performed and
choreographed internationally for more than two decades. She received her training
in London, Copenhagen and Paris. She credits her teachers with instilling in her
a love and respect for the history of classical ballet. Through her most important
teacher/mentors — John Marshall and Florentina Lojekova — she can trace a direct line to such dance
luminaries as Idzikowski, Fokine, Espinoza, Perrot and Vestris.
As a young dancer, she relocated to Paris where she undertook in-depth studies of Baroque dancing
from original source material. These studies were supplemented by intensive training in North America
by Wendy Hilton and Sandra Caverly — experts in Baroque dancing and Bournonville technique
respectively. Since then, Ms Zingg has choreographed and performed in more than 70 productions for
Opera Atelier, which she founded in 1985 with her partner, Marshall Pynkoski.
Opera Atelier productions have been performed in Versailles, at the BBC Proms, Houston Grand Opera
and the Glimmerglass Festival. Opera Atelier has also introduced period productions of Mozart to
audiences in Japan, Singapore and Korea.
Ms Zingg has received numerous awards including the prestigious Toronto Arts Award, the Opera
Canada Ruby Award for outstanding achievement in the field of opera in Canada in addition to having
been named by TIME Magazine as one of Canada’s most influential artists in the field of Classical music.
She has collaborated with conductors Marc Minkowski, Christopher Hogwood, Andrew Parrott, David
Fallis and Stefano Montanari and choreographed for dancers from the National Ballet of Canada, The
Scapino Ballet, The Dutch National Ballet and Opera Atelier. She has also choreographed and performed
in numerous film projects including Rhombus Media’s “Master Peter’s Puppet Show”, “Romeos
and Juliets” and “The Sorceress” opposite Dame Kiri te Kanawa. In the summer of 2013, Ms Zingg
choreographed dances for Mozart's Lucio Silla for the Salzburg Festival. In 2015 Ms. Zingg makes her
choreographic debut at La Scala, Milan.

Director’s Notes
PERSÉE – SYNOPSIS
I first encountered Lully’s Persée while Jeannette Lajeunesse
Zingg and I were teaching at the Centre de Music Baroque de
Versailles, under the direction of Conductor Marc Minkowski.
ACT I: The Palace of King Céphée and
Queen Cassiope of Ethiopia
While choosing repertoire for our company
of young singers, Maestro Minkowski had the
inspired idea of introducing me to Act III of Lully’s
Persée — the Medusa Scene — in the hope that
I might find it stageable. I gladly accepted the
challenge, expecting the scene in question to be
highly dramatic, violent — even terrifying.
Imagine my shock and eventual delight, when
I realized the Medusa scene was comic —
hilariously so — and acted as a brilliant foil to the
scenes of heroism and self-sacrifice with which
Persée is rife. We subsequently presented an
informal staging of the Medusa scene in the Salon
d’Hercules with Mr. Minkowski conducting his
superb orchestra, Les Musiciens de Louvre. The
response was overwhelming.
Unbeknownst to me, Martine Tridde (Head
of Group Corporate Philanthropy BNP Paribas
Foundation) was in attendance. Thanks
to Madame Tridde’s genuine interest and
enthusiasm, BNP Paribas became a major sponsor
of Opera Atelier, generously supporting our
productions in Toronto, and facilitating our earliest
international touring.
In the year 2000, Opera Atelier chose to produce
Persée in its entirety as the company’s Millennium
Project, with Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra, under
the baton of Hervé Niquet. Having commissioned
our own performing edition of the 17th century
manuscript, Persée has since become a signature
piece for our company.
For me, Persée represents everything that is
best about 17th century French music theatre.
Persée excels on every level — as a singing
event, an orchestral event, a dance event, an
acting, literary, and visual event, of exceptional
richness and variety. It has been a great privilege
for Jeannette and me to have the opportunity
to explore this masterpiece for a third time in
our careers. I trust you will find the joy and
commitment of our cast and orchestra infectious
as we chart the career of “le glorieux heros, qui
nous donne un heureux repos.”
King Céphée expresses the terror his people
feel for the snake-haired Méduse: anyone
that looks on her turns to stone. The goddess
Juno has sent Méduse to punish Queen
Cassiope for her insolence in comparing
her own beauty to that of the goddess.
To appease Juno, Cassiope has prepared
a demonstration of dancing, fencing and
sacrifices in her honour.
We learn that Mérope, the queen’s sister,
secretly loves Persée. However, Persée
loves and is loved by Andromède, the king's
daughter. Andromède is betrothed to Phinée,
her uncle, who suspects that she loves another.
Juno rejects the sacrifices made in her honour
and messengers arrive with the terrible news
that Méduse has taken more victims.
ACT II: The Palace Gardens
Céphée announces that Persée will fight
Méduse; if successful, he is to have
Andromède as his own. Phinée is outraged.
Andromède and Mérope confess their mutual
love for Persée and pray for his safe return.
Persée learns that Andromède loves only him.
Mercure assures Persée of the assistance of
all the gods (except Juno). A troupe of Cyclops
brings Persée a sword forged by Vulcan,
Warrior Nymphs bring Pallas's diamond
shield, and Fiery Spirits present him with the
helmet of Pluto.
INTERMISSION
ACT III: The dwelling of the Gorgons
Once a beautiful woman renowned for her
gorgeous hair, the snake-haired Méduse
describes her terrible fate at the hands of
the jealous goddess Pallas Athena. Mercure
casts a sleeping spell over Méduse and the
Gorgons. Using Athena's shield as a mirror
to avoid gazing on Méduse, Persée beheads
her. Using Pluto's helmet to make himself
invisible, Persée flees the wrath of the
remaining Gorgons, carrying Méduse's head.
ACT IV: A rocky seacoast in Ethiopia
Amidst victory celebrations, the sailor
Idas enters to announce that the furious
Juno, along with Neptune, is determined
to sacrifice Andromède to a sea monster.
Phinée admits that he would rather see her
dead than in the arms of his rival. Before the
despairing eyes of the king, the Tritons chain
Andromède to a rock. At the last moment,
Persée flies toward the approaching
monster and kills it. The storm ends and the
Ethiopians celebrate victory.
ACT II: A reception room prepared
for the wedding of Persée and
Andromède
A devastated Mérope longs for death, and
is convinced by Phinée to take revenge on
Persée. As the High Priest begins the wedding
ceremony, however, Mérope repents of her
treachery and warns Persée that Phinée's
assassins are approaching. In the ensuing
battle, Mérope is struck by an arrow and
killed. With Juno protecting Phinée, it seems
that he will win; however, Persée uses the
Gorgon's head to turn his enemy to stone.
Venus descends from the heavens and
announces that Juno is appeased and they
can now live in peace. All of the Ethiopians
celebrate the return of harmony embodied in
the union of Persée and Andromède.

Set Design Notes
Choreogr apher’s Notes
Persée, by Jean-Baptiste Lully (performed for the first time in 1682 in Paris) contains as much dance music
as singing. Dancers are actual characters in the opera, representing the courtiers in some sections, and
mythological characters in others. Cyclops, Tritons, Fiery Spirits, and various other creatures are given
beautiful ballet music in which to make their appearances. The ballet enhances the opera both visually and
dramatically. Dances include Minuets, Gigues, Bourrées, Passacailles, and many others. French Baroque
dance forms have been choreographed specifically for this production of Persée. Choreography is based on
historical dances notated by the dancing masters of the Academy of Louis XIV.
The Baroque era saw the real flowering of dancing, both social and theatrical, because Louis XIV of France
was a talented dancer himself and the greatest patron of this art in history. By his orders, an Academy of
Music and Dance was established during the 1660s. The techniques taught at the school were drawn from
two sources. The first was the “noble” style, which had evolved in the ballroom as a highly developed form
seriously studied on a daily basis by aristocratic society. The second basis for Baroque dance technique
was the acrobatic style of the fairground performers who were popular in theatres throughout Europe.
Louis XIV’s Academy began to produce professional dancers who were able to display great virtuosity.
Dances of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries have been recorded in detail in a form of dance
notation as well as in many pictures and precise verbal descriptions. Theatrical dancing was included in
almost every entertainment — many Baroque operas contain as much dance music as vocal music. JeanBaptiste Lully, and Jean-Baptiste Poquelin Molière had both danced with Louis XIV in court entertainments
during the King’s youth. Lully later became court composer and Molière a great comic playwright.
Together, these two invented the “comèdie-ballet” in which singing, dancing and acting were integrated in
a single performance, much like the modern day musical.
In 1682, long before the construction of a permanent theatre at Versailles, composer Jean-Baptiste Lully,
librettist Philippe Quinault and designer Jean Bérain mounted Persée on the stage of the Palais-Royale in
Paris. Its success was so great and its position in the repertoire so assured that in 1770 almost 100 years
later it was chosen as the entertainment celebrating the inauguration of the newly built Opéra Royal and
the marriage of the future Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette .
– Jeannette Lajeunesse Zingg
“Like so much in this opera, its dance sequences offered a convincing and enthralling view
of Baroque style.”
– Fred Cohn, Opera News
No doubt a great part of its original success was due to Jean Bérain, the King’s chosen designer and
guiding force behind the Menus-Plaisir du Roi — the office that supervised the creation of all spectacles
at court. Bérain’s designs incorporating colourful arabesques and grotesques combine fantasy and
majesty in a sophisticated style that has come to be associated with the reign of Louis XIV.
Persée was devised as an allegory of the power and prestige of Louis XIV and as such its production
values would have reflected the splendour of a court that was unrivalled for its taste and opulence. It
is a mythologically based opera that demands the complete spectrum of baroque stagecraft including
ingenious machinery, ornately painted trompe l’oeil scenery, pasteboard monsters and a cast of
supernatural characters dressed in glittering costumes.
Opera Atelier first produced Persée on a modest budget in 2000. My designs of forced-perspective
scenery, two flying machines, three gorgons, and a sea monster (accompanied by mermaids, tritons and
several dolphins) took their inspiration from the artistry of Monsieur Bérain. For our second mounting in
2004 I added more painted scenery in the form of a formal garden scene in Act One and a cloudscape
for the descent of Venus. Finally this season I have been able to complete my vision with the addition of a
majestic audience hall for the court of the King of Ethiopia, a grotto for Medusa, a fierce seascape for the
sea monster and an ornate framework of 17th century tapestry designs that encloses the stage.
It was true in the 1770 and it’s true today — though rarely performed Persée is an opera that deserves
to be seen again and again. Our love for this masterpiece grows each time we approach it and it is with
great pride that we prepare to bring our completed version of Lully’s triumph back to its rightful home at
the Opéra Royal at Versailles.
– Ger ard Gauci

Oper a Atelier Education and Outreach
For over 25 years, Opera Atelier has
demonstrated its commitment to artist
and youth training, which has grown
to include all aspects of performance.
The School of Atelier Ballet (SAB) offers classes
led by professional dancers in a caring, creative
atmosphere year-round, six days a week.
Instruction in ballet, modern dance and historical
dance is affordable and enjoyable for both aspiring
professionals and recreational dancers. SAB also
provides an intensive summer program in which
students study various forms of dance. Students
from the SAB also participate in various outreach
performances throughout the year across the
city of Toronto through the Dance Through Time
program, which traces the history of dance from
the Renaissance right through to the Romantic era
(15th to 19th centuries), and provides educational
and entertaining commentary that puts each
dance in a historical context.
Opera Atelier’s Making of an Opera (MOAO) has
influenced hundreds of teachers and thousands
of students across the GTA over the last 15 years.
Aimed primarily towards high school students,
workshops and demonstrations include historical
perspectives, set and costume design, wigs and
makeup, careers in the arts, music, dance and
stage fighting. This informative and hands-on
learning experience culminates in attendance at
the dress rehearsal performance.
