Join the Happy Wanderers, Mid-Florida Milers and Suncoast Sandpipers in a central Florida tradition: Walk Around Florida, a weekend of volkssports, food and camaraderie. Volkssports. The hosts are volkssport clubs whose members earn credit towards distance and event awards. For more information on volkssports, ask at start points or see WalkFlorida.org. However, it’s not necessary to walk for credit. Everyone is welcome! General Policies. Events are held rain or shine! We cannot make refunds. Water will be available at walk starts and checkpoints but Florida in fall can be warm. We recommend carrying water. Pets on a leash are welcome on the walks. Lodging. Event headquarters will be the Barrymore Hotel Tampa Riverwalk, starting point of the Sandpiper’s 5/10/20k Year Round event (YRE). Register for a room by calling the Barrymore, 813-223-1351 and asking for the Walk Around Florida rate of $109. If you would like to reserve online, go to barrymorehotel.com. Choose the check-in date, number of nights, number of adults and children, and click “Book Now” in the upper right-hand corner. Preregistration is required for award, Marathon in Motion, dinner, Sun lunch, and (see Registration Forms and Waiver) and is encouraged for walk events. When you check in at the Barrymore on Fri, Nov 4, you’ll receive an Activity Card showing what you’ve paid for. Please present the card at every event and checkpoint. If not preregistered, you may sign up for all walks on Fri night and receive the Activity Card. On Sat and Sun, Nov 5-6, unregistered participants sign up at walk start locations. Dining. On Fri evening, after enjoying the Tampa YRE, try one of the acclaimed city restaurants, some of which are located on the romantically lit Riverwalk. See pg. 7 for numbers of suggested venues. Since the two Sat walks will run concurrently all day long, no formal lunch is planned. Stop along the walk to enjoy a café in Davis Islands or a cold one at the Hidden Springs Ale Works located near the Tampa Heights 5 & 10k routes. On Fri afternoon, join us at the WAF version of La Floridita, the famous Havana bar frequented by Ernest 2 of Spanish moss, nestled on Hillsborough Bay. In addition to shady streets lined with lovely homes, the route’s highlights are the MacDill Trail, a Tampa Greenway, and Ballast Point Park and Pier with views of the downtown skyline. Taking the Riverwalk southwards on a 5/11k route, we head to Bayshore Blvd., claimed to be the world’s longest continuous sidewalk, along the sparkling Tampa Bay. Reaching the bridge to Davis Islands, the 5k wends its way through the city back to the start while the 11k will head to the islands. In the 1920s, Tampa native D. P. Davis planned a resort community with three hotels, nine-hole golf course, airport, and swimming pool. Many of the original Mediterranean-style structures still stand and have received national Historic Designation. Walk is rated 2B. Wheel chair users can do 5K with modifications; strollers can do both with modifications. The 10k route begins & ends on the newest portion of the Riverwalk which is finished up to Water Works Park, home to Princess Ulele. Tampa Heights was Tampa’s first suburb, established in the 1880s and was home to the city’s first judges, doctors, business owners & other civic leaders. Highlights include historic structures, beautiful river views, & the Ulele Restaurant. The 5k travels through the city’s new Perry Harvey Park which commemorates the area’s history as “the scrub,” the cultural and business hub of the AfricanAmerican community. Starting in Gadsden Park, Sunday’s walk takes participants into Ballast Point neighborhoods, canopied by mature oak trees full 6 Hemingway. We’ll serve the original formula daiquiri the author enjoyed so much. Look for a notice at registration on where we’ll set up the bar. On Sat., it’s off to a Cuban themed dinner inside the hotel. The buffet will feature Cuban roasted pork and chicken Espanol, with a variety of Latin American sides. On Sun, we will celebrate 40 years of American volkssporting with a picnic lunch at the Ballast Point Walk, site of the first Sandpiper walk held in 1984. Planned are grilled bratwurst, chips, salads & a sweet. Fees. Each walk costs $3. The special award is a cigar box decorated with a facsimile of an original cigar box label for $3 (does not include credit). We’re planning only an additional 5 boxes for day of event sale. Please note: WAF 26 Marathon rules limit you to 25k a day towards your MiM ribbon. Ribbons will be awarded at the Sunday bratwurst lunch. If you don’t preregister, ribbons are not guaranteed.
