Park in Ballast Point (start time is
Eastern Standard Time).
WAF 26. Join the Happy Wanderers, Mid-Florida Milers and Suncoast Sandpipers in a central Florida tradition: Walk Around Florida, a weekend of
volkssports, food and camaraderie.
Volkssports. The hosts are volkssport clubs whose members earn credit towards distance and event awards. For
more information on volkssports, ask at start points or see
WalkFlorida.org. However, it’s not necessary to walk for
credit. Everyone is welcome!
General Policies. Events are held rain or shine! We cannot make refunds. Water will be available at walk starts and checkpoints but Florida in fall can be warm.
We recommend carrying water. Pets on a leash are welcome on the walks.
Lodging. Event headquarters will be the Barrymore Hotel Tampa Riverwalk,
starting point of the Sandpiper’s 5/10/20k Year Round event (YRE). Register
for a room by calling the Barrymore, 813-223-1351 and asking for the Walk
Around Florida rate of $109. If you would like to reserve online, go to barrymorehotel.com. Choose the check-in date, number of nights, number of adults
and children, and click “Book Now” in the upper right-hand corner. Click on
“Enter your access or promotional code and select “Group Code.” Enter the
code SUNC and click “Update.” Located on the Hillsborough River, the hotel
provides a restaurant, pool, and fitness area and offers free shuttle to Ybor
City and other attractions within 2 miles. Pets are permitted with an additional
charge; call the Barrymore for details.
FVA Meeting. Meeting will be 2 p.m., Sun, Nov 6, in the multipurpose room of the
Jan Kaminis Platt Regional Library, 3910 Manhattan Ave., Tampa. Contact Wilma
Shively at [email protected]/910-273-8257 for more information.

checkpoint. If not preregistered, you may sign up for all walks on Fri night and receive the Activity Card. On Sat and Sun, Nov 5-6, unregistered participants sign up
at walk start locations.
Dining. On Fri evening, after enjoying the Tampa YRE, try one of the acclaimed
city restaurants, some of which are located on the romantically lit Riverwalk. See
pg. 7 for numbers of suggested venues. Since the two Sat walks will run concurrently all day long, no formal lunch is planned. Stop along the walk to enjoy a café in Davis Islands or a cold one at the Hidden Springs Ale Works located
near the Tampa Heights 5 & 10k routes. On Fri afternoon, join us at the
WAF version of La Floridita, the famous Havana bar frequented by Ernest

Bayshore Blvd./Davis Islands, Nov 5. Taking the Riverwalk
southwards on a 5/11k route, we head to Bayshore Blvd.,
claimed to be the world’s longest continuous sidewalk,
along the sparkling Tampa Bay. Reaching the bridge to Davis Islands, the 5k wends its way through the city back to
the start while the 11k will head to the islands. In the 1920s,
Tampa native D. P. Davis planned a resort community with
three hotels, nine-hole golf course, airport, and swimming
pool. Many of the original Mediterranean-style structures
still stand and have received national Historic Designation. Walk is rated 2B.

Heights was Tampa’s first suburb, established in the
1880s and was home to the city’s first judges, doctors,
business owners & other civic leaders. Highlights include
historic structures, beautiful river views, & the Ulele Restaurant. The 5k travels through the city’s new Perry Harvey Park which commemorates the area’s history as “the
scrub,” the cultural and business hub of the AfricanAmerican community. Walk is rated 1A, suitable for wheelchairs & strollers.
