25th Annual American Celtic Ball 3
Sir Michael W.J. Smurfit, kbe
International Chairman and Co-Founder
Welcome to the 25th Annual American Celtic Ball, hosted by The Ireland Chamber of
Commerce – United States (ICCUSA).
I would also like to welcome representatives from multitude of governments including the
United States, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Included in this welcome are
the vastly important agencies and companies that serve to steer foreign direct investment and
tourism such as Enterprise Ireland, Covanta Energy, Paccar, Digicel, Aon, Tourism Ireland and
IDA.
I would also like to congratulate the staff of ICCUSA for doing such a wonderful job over the
last 25 years both in the area of developing business relationships between Ireland and the US
but also the expansion of business throughout the international marketplace.
Thank you to Minister Phil Hogan, whom we are honored to welcome as our keynote speaker.
Congratulations to tonight’s honorees on their achievements and contributions to their
communities and being role models for professionals and entrepreneurs in both countries
and now globally. Congratulations to Gary McGann, Mark Pigott, Colm McLoughlin and
Hon. Kingsley Kuku. It gives me a real sense of pride in that we have created a format where
governments, state bodies from both Northern Ireland and Ireland and organizations such as
ICCUSA and other international Chambers are pulling together and creating an environment
and opportunity for organizations and individuals to operate in the most efficient ways across
the island and the Atlantic alike.
At this time, I would like to recognize The ICCUSA Foundation Inc., and its Albert
Schweitzer’s Leadership for Life youth leadership program. You will learn more about this
thoughtful and dynamic program tonight and its recent success during our Fifth Annual
international youth leadership conference in Dublin, Ireland. I would kindly urge you to
consider becoming involved in its ongoing success.
Again, I would like to thank you all for joining us tonight. I am confident that you will enjoy
yourselves and leave with a far greater appreciation of the role that ICCUSA plays in further
strengthening the historic bonds between the United States, the island of Ireland and the
global community.

Dearest Friends and Supporters,
It is my pleasure to welcome you to a truly remarkable evening. With the 25th Annual
American Celtic Ball, the Ireland Chamber of Commerce – USA continues to build
bridges, promote commerce and support world class education programs through our
Albert Schweitzer’s Leadership for Life Foundation. This summer we just concluded
our fifth annual international youth leadership conference at the National University of
Ireland – Maynooth. It was there that 300 young people from fifteen countries; joined
hands, worked hard, shared love and laughter to carry out the legacy of Schweitzer
when he asked so many years ago to, “find someplace to invest your humanity.” As the
International Ambassador for this program, I have seen first-hand over the last five
years just what a difference we are making. I thank you for your continued support.
I congratulate tonight’s honorees on their achievements and contributions to business,
education, philanthropy and the global community. They are a shining example to us
all.
Warm regards,

Keynote Speaker
Phil Hogan
Minister for the Environment, Community
and Local Government
M
inister Phil Hogan is a political leader who has worked for over 21 years serving the
people of Carlow and Kilkenny. A lifetime in politics and a former candidate for the
leadership of Fine Gael, Minister Hogan’s experience is central to delivering the change the
people of Carlow and Kilkenny voted for in the last election. Minister Hogan, with Fine Gael,
is at the centre of setting the path to fixing the wasted mistakes of the past, creating a fairer
Ireland for future generations.
Phil Hogan was appointed Minister for the Environment, Community & Local Government in
March 2011 and has already set about delivering on Fine Gael’s election pledges and the
Programme for Government’s commitments to reshape the way in which we do politics. Minister
Hogan is currently overseeing the introduction of the most significant political reform package
announced in decades. The reform package includes significant restrictions on corporate
donations and a requirement that 30% of all general election candidates are women for parties
wishing to retain full levels of state funding.
Minister Hogan has also announced the establishment of a Constituency Commission with
revised terms of reference which will result in a reduction in the number of TDs. Minister Hogan
is introducing a six month time limit on the holding of bye elections to fill Dáil vacancies which
will ensure that Irish citizens are not left without representation for prolonged periods as has
occurred in the recent past.
As Fine Gael’s Spokesman on Environment, Heritage & Local Government from 2007 to 2011,
Minister Hogan put Local Government Reform at the head of his agenda and will now ensure
that the government follows through on its commitments in this regard. Under Fine Gael’s Local
Government plan, Kilkenny’s Local Authorities and local authorities throughout the country will
become the main driving force in promoting job creation and business development.
Looking after the interests of the people of Kilkenny and Carlow has always been part of Phil’s
priorities. He, along with his team of workers, is always available to contact from his office at the
New Street in Kilkenny to answer any constituents’ queries. Phil also travels throughout Carlow
and Kilkenny holding clinics, attending meetings and serving the entire population.
Throughout his career, Minister Hogan has campaigned for consumer rights including the ‘Give
it Back’Tax campaign where thousands of people benefited from tax-back claims and eventually
culminated in the government establishing the National Consumer Agency. In government,
Minister Hogan continues to champion consumer rights and has announced that he will
strengthen the building control systems which will protect consumers.
Phil Hogan served as Minister for State in Department of Finance in the last Fine Gael
government at a time where job growth was at an all-time high. During his time as Minister,
the Irish economy grew at an annual average rate of 8.7%, peaking at 11.1% in 1997. In that
period the unemployment rate decreased by over 4% and 160,000 new jobs were created across
all the different economic sectors of society. Jobs in construction grew at a steady pace, while
other jobs were created in Manufacturing, Retail and Transport.
Fine Gael’s vision has always been to have steady economic growth evenly distributed through
both the public and private sector. Minister Hogan and Fine Gael will utilise the experience
gained during their previous periods in government to turn Ireland around set the country on
the road to economic recovery.

Ireland Chamber of Commerce - USA
25 Years of business networking throughout the world
T
onight, Ireland Chamber of Commerce-USA (ICCUSA) is
celebrating our 25th Anniversary. For over 25 years ICCUSA
has promoted Trans-Atlantic business development, trade missions,
educational initiatives and philanthropy from the United States to
Ireland while also improving relations and connecting companies
around the world to numerous opportunities. The Chamber and its
entire membership have flourished during this time period and will
continue to play an integral role as the global economy continues to
recovery from financial turmoil several years ago.
The Ireland Chamber was founded back in 1988 by current President and Chief Executive Officer Mr. Maurice Buckley along with
Mr. James Malloy (Jefferson Smurfit Corporation), Sir Michael W.J.
Smurfit, Mr. Donald Brennan (Morgan Stanley) and Mr. John Gallagher. In the early years the Chamber was led by Mr. Pat Keogh
and then succeeded by current President, Mr. Maurice Buckley in
1999. In the beginning and throughout our years as a Chamber our
goal was to create multiple chapters throughout the country, build
a substantial membership of individuals and business executives,
develop a core network of political and corporate decision-makers,
strategically sequence our key networks and directories, establish an
Irish connection between Chambers within the United States and
the Chambers in Ireland, inform our members through professional
newsletters, social media and our website and most importantly host
numerous networking events throughout the globe organized by our
Chamber but also partnering with additional organizations throughout the region.
One of our signature networking attractions for our members during
each calendar year is our American Celtic Ball which is held every
October in New York City at either the world-famous Waldorf Astoria
Grand Ballroom or our recent home the historic Pierre Hotel. For the
past 25 years, the Celtic Ball has been the leading Irish-American
awards banquet attended by thousands of business and government
leaders from around the world. The Celtic Ball has been a perfect
venue to salute the achievements of individuals who have made
significant contributions both personally and professionally to the
aims of ICCUSA but also exhibiting pride in their Irish heritage. The
event has honored numerous individuals for their contributions and
achievements in the world of business, science, finance, diplomacy,
philanthropy, entrepreneurship, education, entertainment including
the arts. As a tribute to our history, we wanted to note three of our
most iconic, significant, prestigious and historic Celtic Ball Gala’s in
our 25 year history.
American Celtic Ball 2001:
A tribute to 9/11
In 2001, ICCUSA hosted our 13th Annual American Celtic Ball
exactly one month after the tragic events of September 11th. As a nation and more important as a city, we were all shaken and saddened
by those terrible events on that given day but as a Chamber and part
of the New York City community, it was our obligation to assist those
efforts and families who needed our assistance in a time of uncertainty and chaos. ICCUSA leadership, along with our three honorees
that evening, the Dublin Chamber of Commerce and the Northern
Ireland Chamber of Commerce and Industry, donated $300,000 to
50 25th Annual American Celtic Ball
the Denis Leary
Foundation. The
proceeds for that
evening went
to the families
of deceased
members of the
NYC Fire and
Police Department who died
while attempting
to rescue victims in the World Trade Center.
For the first time in our history the entire program was adjusted as
a fundraiser to honor and pay tribute to all of the fallen victims in
Washington DC, Pennsylvania and New York City. The 2001 Celtic
Ball was the first event held in the Waldorf Astoria since the attack on
9/11. The recipients that year were: Governor of Bank of Ireland Mr.
Laurence G. Crowley, Chairman of Citizens Bank of Massachusetts,
Mr. Neal F. Finnegan & Capital Partner of Winston & Strawn, Mr.
Thomas A. Reynolds III.
American Celtic Ball 2007:
A tribute to Senator George Mitchell
The 19th Annual American Celtic Ball in 2007 will go down as our
most successful event over our 25 year history. The Grand Ballroom
at the Waldorf Astoria was completely sold out as ICCUSA honored
former Senator George Mitchell for his work and public service in
the United States Senate but in particular his dedication and diplomacy in Northern Ireland as US special envoy assigned by President
Bill Clinton. Under his leadership, Mitchell led a commission that
established the principles on non-violence to which all parties in
Northern Ireland had to adhere by and subsequently chaired the
all-party negotiations which led to the Good Friday Agreement. For
his involvement and service he received a special recognition and
award by the ICCUSA. In addition, we also had an exceptional cast
of recipients that evening as we honored former President & CEO
of Coca-Cola, Mr. E. Neville Isdell, prominent lawyer & partner of
Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, Mr. John William Butler,
President & COO of Cummins, Inc., Mr. Joseph F. Loughery, and our
very own Celtic Ball Master of Ceremonies since 2010, International
Ambassador of the Albert Schweitzer Foundation and Hollywood
actor, Mr. Matt McCoy.
our membership the opportunity to network with “business friends
and associates” during St. Patrick’s Day with a nice Irish pint and
entertainment in the morning. This year over 300 people attended
our event which was hosted by ICCUSA Chairman and 2010 Celtic
Ball recipient, Mr. Brian O’Dwyer. Our speakers for the breakfast this
year included: Taoiseach, Enda Kenny, New York City Mayor, Michael
Bloomberg and New York City Speaker, Christine Quinn.
American Celtic Ball 2012:
A tribute to the Presidential Era of
Mary McAleese - Republic of Ireland
Last year, the Ireland Chamber of Commerce-USA along with our
partners Tourism Ireland hosted the 24th Annual American Celtic
Ball at the historic Pierre Hotel in New York City. The entire evening was an iconic “tribute and thank you” to both President Mary
McAleese and Senator Martin McAleese for their 14 years of public
service to the Republic of Ireland as they received the International
Ellis Island Medals of Honor. The Presidency of Mary McAleese will
forever be associated with the cause of peace, justice, social equality, social inclusion and anti-sectarianism or also known as an era of
“Building Bridges.” Both of them carried out their duties wisely and
independently, motivated only by an abundance of political skill and
judgment. One of their greatest achievements was the groundbreaking and highly successful State visit by Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth
II to the Republic of Ireland in 2011, which was the culmination of
their long and dedicated work for reconciliation between the two
nations. Side by side for 14 years during her Presidency both Mary
and Martin served the Republic of Ireland with grace, dedication,
humility and honor. That evening was a tribute and thank you to an
iconic dynamic duo who will be remembered for a very long time to
come. In addition, the recipients for the 2012 Celtic Ball were: Vice
President of Global Operations EMEA of PayPal, Ms. Louise Phelan,
Senior Advisor for Special Initiatives, Office of the Secretary of
State, Ambassador Elizabeth Frawley Bagley and comedian, Mr. Tom
Dreesen.
ICCUSA presents:
The Albert Schweitzer Leadership
for Life Foundation
Our latest initiative came In 2007 as ICCUSA President & CEO, Mr.
Maurice Buckley announced the establishment of ICCUSA’s new
sister charity the Albert Schweitzer Leadership for Life Foundation
(ASLFL) which firmly established ICCUSA’s role in the education
industry. The ASLFL Foundation was created to develop the next
generation of young leaders by providing leadership development
programs and conferences all across the world but especially in the
United States and Irish markets. Since its inception, the leadership program has been developed by our international partner;
Foroige, accredited by the National University of Ireland-Galway
and endorsed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and
Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to give it the creditability needed
to compete in the global marketplace. Since our first initiatives in
2007, over 3,000 international students have attended our leadership
development program including our highly respected international
youth leadership conference which is held every year at the National University of Ireland-Maynooth just outside Dublin, Ireland.
Each year our conference hosts over 300 students from 15 countries
around the world.
From all of us here at the Ireland Chamber of Commerce – USA from
past and present we hope you have a specular evening and thank
you for a wonderful 25 years!

International Youth Leadership Conference
July 27th - August 3rd 2013
T
he Albert Schweitzer Foundation held its 5th
Annual International Youth Leadership Conference
from July 27th- August 3rd 2013 at the National
University of Ireland-Maynooth just outside Dublin,
Ireland. The Albert Schweitzer Leadership for Life
program is traditionally an eight day education
initiative or conference promoting youth leadership
development, cultural awareness and social
development as our organization trains’ the next
generation of leaders and their promising futures.
This year we were honored to host an international
delegation of over 300 students from 15 countries
including; the United States, Ireland, England,
Northern Ireland, Brazil, Canada, Kenya, Nigeria,
South Korea, India, Palestine, Japan, Dominican
Republic, Lithuania and Russia. Each delegate was
specifically nominated and selected to attend the
conference based on a strict criterion in academics
and community service activities within their own
individual or global communities.
The international experience and conference in Ireland
offers a pioneering approach in youth leadership development by helping young global citizens develop the
skills, vision and confidence to become innovative leaders ready for university institutions and which will ultimately feed the global marketplace. Each delegate was
required to attend thirty hours of classroom activities
throughout the week which focused on improving their
communication skills, public speaking, problem solving,
the art of critical analysis, team building, development of
professional relationships and out-of-the-box thinking
in advanced institutions or corporations. They also had
the opportunity in each session to discuss and debate
matters of global importance including social, economic,
political, environmental and developed a sense or an appreciation of multiculturalism. At the conclusion of the
52 25th Annual American Celtic Ball
conference each delegate was given a graduation certificate from one of our three modules offered at the event
which was developed by our international partnerForoige, endorsed by the United Nations Educational,
Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and
accredited by the National University of Ireland-Galway
when ninety hours of coursework has been completed
along with an course examination.

presenting for the first time our brand NEW Albert
Schweitzer Life-Time Achievement & Leadership for Life
Medals to Mr. Mark Pigott and the Honorable Kingsley
KuKu for their leadership, courage and service to their
individual and international communities.
The Albert Schweitzer Life-Time Achievement &
Leadership for Life Medal was made by Mr. Marc Mellon,
one of America’s foremost sculptors and medalists,
widely known for his bronze portrait bust, reliefs, and
commemorative statues. Most of these works serve
to recognize achievement and have included busts of
President George H. W. Bush, in the collection of the
National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian Institution; Pope
John Paul II, unveiled in St. Peter Square and housed in
the Papal Apartments of the Vatican; and President Lee
Teng-Hui of Taiwan. Mellon’s bronze work also includes
his portrait reliefs and medals which are in a number of
museum collections including the Smithsonian American Art Museum, which has a solid gold strike of the
2009 Official Presidential Inaugural
Medal, featuring
a portrait relief of
Barack Obama.

The relationship between Mr. Mellon and the Ireland
Chamber of Commerce-USA (ICCUSA) including
members of the Albert Schweitzer staff began over
twelve years ago when Mr. Mellon and the ICCUSA
designed and modeled the iconic Sir Michael Smurfit
Business Achievement Award for individuals who flourished in the business community and made significant
achievements or accomplishments in the international
marketplace. Tonight, along with those iconic medals we
are proud to unveil Mr. Marc Mellon’s latest masterwork,
the NEW Albert Schweitzer Life-Time Achievement and

rom the moment you drive down the private lane
to The K Club in Straffan in County Kildare you
are surrounded by beauty; ancient trees stretch their
arms high above you, welcoming you to what truly
is a very special place. At every stop and every turn
your eye is drawn to something new; a little boat
moored on a crystal lake, delicate summer flowers
framed by a white picket fence or old fashioned roses
which fill the air with their sweet summer scent.
Then, as you turn the bend and see Straffan House
(the hotel) on the left you know you have reached
a very special place. But it’s when you step out of
your car and meet the concierge and the reception
team you know what makes The K Club different,
it’s the Céad míle fáilte romhat (one hundred
thousand welcomes) you get and genuine warmth
of the people you meet that make the K Club a really
remarkable place to visit.
F
Dating back to 1832, Ireland’s first AA Five Red Star
Property is the original home of classic Irish hospitality. Straffan House which now forms the main
part of the hotel was built by the Barton family,
who were wine merchants, originally from Donegal but living and working in France. In her current
form, all of the 69 bedrooms

and regular art and history tours

The K Club is home to two Championship Golf
Courses - The Palmer Ryder Cup Course, venue for
the 2006 Ryder Cup, hailed among Europe’s greatest courses, and The Palmer Smurfit Course, host
to the European Open from 1995 to 2007, a challenging links inspired course. The Resort Spa, K Spa
offers a wide variety of treatments for both men
and women. The K Spa is an oasis of tranquility; the
minimalist and contemporary décor sets the scene
for pure indulgence for the mind and body. The
mature estate covers an impressive 550 acres and
also features a stunning Victorian walled garden
and fishing on the River Liffey which runs through
the resort. The resident ghillees offer fly fishing on
the river and horse riding and clay pigeon shooting are also available. A range of award winning
dining facilities are available to choose from and
include both fine dining and informal options. Chef
Finbar Higgins and his team produce award win-
ning food, he modestly describes the style of the
food as “good, honest food” and goes on to say “it’s
all about good produce, well cooked”. The K Club
is very focused on delivering the highest standards
of food and wine and the Resident Sommelier, Lisa
O’Doherty provides diners with expert advice on
wine and also runs regular wine cellar tours and
wine tastings. Conferencing and meeting rooms
are available for business and executive retreats
and facilities include free Wi-fi and onsite technical support as well as a myriad of conferencing and
delegate packages. Families are well catered for and
children will love the kids club which offers arts
and crafts, nature walks and games. Children will
also enjoy using the swimming pool and junior golf
clinics which run during the summer. The K Club
is the ideal venue for business and leisure travelers,
families, weddings and honeymooners, incentive
groups, executive retreats and of course, golfers!
The architecture behind the K Club is owner and
international chairman of ICCUSA, Sir Michael
Smurfit who continues to be a great ambassador for
Irish tourism and hospitality, representing Ireland
with great passion both at home and abroad. He
was the main motivator in delivering the Ryder
Cup to Ireland, an event which was attended by
over 260,000 people and watched by over 1 billion people around the globe. He is also a keen
race goer himself and his own horse, Vintage Crop,
was the very first European horse to win The Melbourne Cup. Indeed, such was his pride in this great
win that the hotel bar is named after this amazing
horse where a replica trophy of the Melbourne Cup
is proudly displayed. On the recent visit of H.M.
Queen Elizabeth II to Ireland, she made a tour to
The National Stud in Tullymore, County Kildare
where she also viewed Vintage Crop among other
great champion and derby winning horses.

The leading networking Organization
Between Ireland and The USA
T
wenty-five years ago, few individuals realized that there was no Chamber
of Commerce representing Ireland in the United States and vice-a-versa to
open the doors for US companies in Ireland. The decision took place to form the
Ireland Chamber of Commerce at a time when Ireland’s unemployment was at
over 20% and was basically an agricultural and tourist driven economy.
Over the last decade that has changed dramatically and the American investment
in Ireland has been one of the driving forces. However, we all realize that by
capitalizing on the most educated young people in Europe, opportunities would
lie ahead. It is interesting to know now that Ireland is the 9th largest customer for
American products and services.
Added to this there are equally the same number of Americans employed in
Irish companies based in America as there are Americans in companies based
in Ireland. We would like to feel that we played some small part in this success
story. Our objectives are:
„„ provide a forum for the development of business relations between Ireland
and the United States
„„ encourage and facilitate a business exchange of information, ideas and
expertise between Ireland and the United States
„„ development of economic, commercial, financial and educational relationships
on both sides of the Atlantic
„„ work closely with Ireland, Chambers Ireland, the US Chamber of Commerce,
Alliance For US India Business and other international chamber of commerces
and governmental organizations to promote trade, visits and conferences
between the United States and Ireland
„„ support The ICCUSA Foundation’s Albert Schweitzer’s Leadership for Life,
