A Message From VSCDA’s President
On October 13, 2012, the VSCDA held its Annual Board Meeting in Sycamore, IL, with
Don Carone once again lending us meeting space and providing refreshments. Special thanks
to Don!
We are pleased to report that we are in an excellent financial situation, all the events
held this year having more than covered their expenses. As you know, we have the benefit of
being a not-for-profit club and, therefore, our financial goal is merely to cover our expenses and
set aside enough to comfortably plan for the next year. This has been accomplished by our club
being run by volunteers, by our event chairs closely watching expenses, and by our entries
having significantly increased over last year. As is evident, the more our members participate,
the more we can keep our entry fees low.
I would like to thank our Event Chairs Bob Shedd, Jeff Janus, Ted and Betsy Sodergren,
Scott Fohrman, and Mike and Deb Korneli for their very hard work in putting on outstanding
events in 2012. I also want to thank all our Board Members and others who gave of their time
and experience helping with Driver’s Committee, Tech, car classification and all the other tasks
required to run this club. Without them we don’t exist. This coming year George Hovsepian will
head up the Driver’s School and Chris McGrath will chair our Grattan event. We look forward to
adding their energy and ideas to VSCDA.
We realize we are involved in a sport that requires significant expense of both money
and time. Therefore, our goal for the club remains the same: to provide the maximum amount
of track time for the least possible cost at events that are fun for the drivers, their crew, and their
families and to do so with the least amount of hassle for the entrant. We are always open to
suggestions as to how to do this better. Remember, the more you participate, the lower we can
keep our entry fees. We look forward to seeing you all in 2013.

VSCDA Board Meeting Summary
The meeting was held October 13, 2012, in Sycamore, IL, starting at 8:00 a.m. In attendance:

Summary:

John Houlton presented VSCDA’s Balance Sheet through 8/31/12. The club has had
another good year, with all our events showing a profit and money in reserve to support
the launch of our 2013 Race Season. Our success can be attributed to:
o
1) strong budget management by our Event Chairs;

o
2) a continuing increase in attendance at our events; and
o
3) the new cars brought to VSCDA through our three race series: VVV Race
Series (led by Frank Newton), Trans Am B-Sedan Race Series (led by Steve
Bonk), and Sprite-Midget Race Series (led by Stan Mason).

GingerMan: Jeff Janus reported that the number of cars for both the Driver’s
School and Race Weekend increased this year. The dates for 2013 are
confirmed for May 2-5, with Jeff, Cathy LaVelle, and Bob Shedd as Race Chairs
and George Hovsepian as head of the Driver’s School. One of the goals for next
year’s school will be to post some of the materials on vscda.org.

Blackhawk: Ted Sodergren reported on another good year of a strong car count
and the successful introduction of a new race—the Dad’s Day Scramble. The
dates for 2013 are confirmed for June 14-16, with Betsy and Ted Sodergren
again as Race Chairs.
o
Grattan: Scott Fohrman reported that the MG weekend with MGVR was
definitely a success, with a significant increase in car count and feedback of
significant fun by our racers. The dates for 2013 are confirmed for August 16-18,
with Chris McGrath as Race Chair.
o
ELVF: Mike Korneli reported that ELVF went very smoothly this year, with some
rain on Friday but beautiful weather for racing on Saturday and Sunday. The
dates for 2013 are confirmed for September 6-8, with Mike continuing as Race
Chair. The two features will be the Triumph Kastner Cup Race and the 50th
Anniversary of the Formula Vee.

The Race Chairs discussed putting in place an improved process for checking wrist
bands, both driver bands and specialty race (e.g., Enduro) bands. Example: A specially
trained worker at the entrance to the grid whose specific job is to check bands.

John Houlton, Chris McGrath, and Scott Fohrman are working on a fourth race series in
2013: the MGB/Triumph Challenge Series.

Annual Meeting & Dinner: This year VSCDA will be combining our event—on February
2—with the Meadowdale International Raceway Preservation Association in Chicago.
George Hovsepian is heading up this event

Three Group Reps were present at the meeting: Marv Primack for Group 1, Frank
Newton for Group 4, and Steve Bonk for Group 8. Marv reported that the number of
members in Group 1 has gone down, and he is renewing efforts to attract new members.
Frank reported that Group 4 continues to grow, particularly the Formula Vees…47
participants in 2012, which is up from 41 in 2011. Steve reported on the continued
growth in the B-Sedans in Group 8.
Marv will be sending an e-mail to our current Group Reps to confirm whether they will be
continuing in 2013. Then, he will ask the 2013 Group Reps to review the descriptions of
their groups—as listed on vscda.org—for possible updates.

Dave Young gave the Tech Report. He feels that Tech went well this year, with
adequate volunteer help. He particularly liked the move of Touring registration at
Blackhawk to just outside the Tech Barn. It allowed him to check the Touring cars and
get them to the driver’s meeting in a timely manner. Dave asked that we included a pit
map with each Tech Form to help find drivers when necessary.

Barb Nevoral gave the Driver’s Committee Report. 2012 Incidents: GingerMan = minor
incidents; Blackhawk = six incidents; Grattan = eight incidents; ELVF = 20 incidents,
which is definitely more than usual but, fortunately, no injuries. Barb noted that the
VSCDA Driver Policy needs to be updated on vscda.org, which she will do before the
2013 season.

Motion Passed: If a driver is involved in an incident with car damage, he/she must see
the Chief Steward and have their car examined by a member of the VSCDA Driver’s
Committee. Failure to have their car examined will result in a suspension from the
driver’s next VSCDA race.

Doug Bruce, head of Car Prep, was unable to attend the meeting but forwarded his
report. Doug noted that receiving race reports a week before an event—thanks to online
e-registration data—made checking car classes easier. One of his priorities this year
has been to organize the years of car prep forms which he was given when he took the
position. When he completes the analysis of the forms, he plans to add more detailed
information to vscda.org.

Kathy Newton reported on the Newsletter. As the result of providing the Newsletter
online, we have been able to greatly increase the visual content, with numerous pictures
in each issue. The Newsletter is one of the top three most-popular sites on vscda.org
(Race Events and Classified Ads the other two). In 2013, we plan to work more closely
with the Race Series leaders and Group Reps for increased coverage of our events and
members.

Betsy Sodergren reported on our website, advertising and regalia.



VSCDA.ORG: We get 3,800-4,000 visitors to our site each month in-season
(March-Oct.) and 2,400-2,600 off-season (Nov.-Feb.). On average, 47% of those
visitors are new to the site, with referrals from other sites (e.g., roadamerica.com,
vintagemotorsport.com) giving us a boost. The visitors average 4.5 minutes
each visit.
o
Advertising: We advertised in Victory Lane and Vintage Motorsport this year.
We also sent press releases on a regular basis to numerous targeted websites
(e.g., apexspeed.com, vintageracerrules.com, varac.ca).
o
Regalia: We re-introduced VSCDA Regalia this year, with Terri Dennehy
(SPECIAL THANKS TO TERRI!) handling sales at our events. We kept to the
basics: t-shirts for men, women and children; caps; denim shirts for men; decals
and patches. Sales went well, and we will be adding a regalia site to vscda.org.
The office report was presented by Laura Hire.

Registration went particularly well this year, with the addition of new processes
and materials developed by Laura as well as training for registration volunteers.
At Grattan, 100+ drivers were registered in one hour!
o
Laura requested that budget be provided to replace the club’s 10-year-old laptop,
which is used in the office and at race events.
Motion passed: The dates for Early Bird Membership Renewal will be December 1 –
January 15. The fees will remain the same: $85/year for Early Bird Membership and
$95/year at full rate.

Motion passed: Required medicals will be valid for two VSCDA race seasons,
specifically to the end- of -year of second season. Also, the current two medical forms
will be combined into a single form.

Motion passed: All registered drivers must pay entry fees in full before being allowed on
the track.

To fulfill driver requests and be more competitive, the club needs to move up its eregistration availability for all 2013 Race Events as well as to have more information on
each Race Event provided earlier for our website, advertising, and other promotion
activities. We will strive to have e-registration available for GingerMan by March 1, for
Blackhawk and Grattan by April 1, and for ELVF by May 1.

Laura asked about fees related to “second driver, same car.” After discussion, a
decision on this topic was tabled for further research.

Laura recommended that we publicize the non-profit organizations which three of our
four events support, such as greater visibility in the promotion of each event and on
vscda.org.

Laura also recommended that we have greater visibility on our website on two topics on
which she often receives questions: 1) Driver Eligibility Requirements and 2) Reserving
Permanent Numbers.

The 2013 VMC Meeting will be held in Chicago.

Vintage Vees Race Series: It was a great season!
For yet another season, the VSCDA Vintage Vees (aka VVV) had a lot of participants and a lot
of fun. Once again, close, friendly racing was the rule of the day. With perennial leader Garrett
VanCamp under the weather, the field was wide open as to who would be the top winner this
year. Besides the four races with VSCDA, we also added two races to the series at Waterford
Hills and Beaver Run.
Our series is all about participation, and you can see from the results that the top five
participated in at least 5 of the 6 races on our schedule. Frank Newton, our series winner this
year, does like to win and has been number one in past seasons. Then again, he doesn’t like
beating Garrett in this fashion. It’s more fun to race with him and we really missed him the last
two races! Also, heady congratulations to the great guy in the #2 spot—Eric Coppock. We’re
chomping at the bit for next season, Garrett’s return, and another spirited VVV points chase.

Sprite-Midget Race Series: End of Season Results and 2013 Plans (Stan Mason)
We were very pleased with the attendance and fun we enjoyed at our inaugural VSCDA SpriteMidget Race Series this year. We enjoyed great wheel-to-wheel racing with 12 to 17 Sprites
and Midgets at each race weekend. The criteria for this race series emulated some of rules
used by VSCDA’s Vintage Formula Vee’s Race Series, allowing durability to play a major part of
points accumulation. A Sprite or Midget Racer needed to attend a minimum of 2 of the 3
designated races at GingerMan, Blackhawk Farms and Grattan. Points were awarded for
Saturday Qualification & Sprint laps completed, not to exceed 8 points and emphasizing
durability. The Sunday Feature Race was the only portion that awarded points for finishing
position within specified classes. We had winners in 5 of the 8 classes we created. Of the 28
racers that attended these three race tracks, 12 qualified for series points by being present for
at least two race venues. The following are the classes and positions of those racers that
qualified per model and engine displacement:
A. Class 2E Bug Eye Sprite 1000cc (1st Don Kelly, 2nd Jeff Carlos, 3rd Stan Mason & 4th
Gary Kropf)
B. Class 2M1 Bug Eye Sprite 1300cc (1st Cana Comer, 2nd Charlie Hall, 3rd Doug Bruce &
4th Mark Cory)
C. Class 2D Sprite Midget Square Body 1300cc (1st Greg Cory & 2nd Jeff Freers)
D. Class 2M1 Sprite Midget Square Body 1300cc (1st John, Salisbury & 2nd Jim Donato)
We had a great time at Grattan with our British Pub Awards and Points Medal Awards
Ceremony. Results helped balance positions, and racers became aware of the importance of
having a reliable car in order to accumulate the most points. We plan to compile the SpriteMidget specifications of various vintage racing groups, so we can fit those cars in our
appropriate classes when they join us. A questionnaire will be e-mailed to all the racers who
participated in 2012. The responses to this questionnaire should allow us to get closer to
having the appropriate race cars in the appropriate groups, with a place for any vintage SpriteMidget to race with us. The 2013 Sprite-Midget Race Series Rules and Regulations can be
found on vscda.org (Group 2, Sprite-Midget Race Series). We welcome your feedback to

2013 Sprite Midget Race Series
Based on the feedback we are receiving from Sprite-Midget Racers in other Vintage Race
Groups, we are anticipating a bigger and better 2013 when the first race of our series kicks off
at GingerMan, May 2-5, then Blackhawk Farms, June 14-16, and the Grattan Grand Finale,
August 16-18. We also plan to provide additional support to any new Sprite-Midget Racers
attending VSCDA’s Driver’s School at our GingerMan Race Weekend.

Trans Am B-Sedan Race Series: Season Summary and Winners (Steve Bonk)
Another great season has ended for the Trans Am B-Sedan Race Series. This year we had a
total of 5 races and a total of 42 different racers involved in our series. Yes, we are definitely
growing! Not everyone could make all the events, but we averaged 15 cars per race. This year
4 out of the 5 races counted towards the championship. The best 4 out of 5 races were picked
for points.
The Trans Am B-Sedan Challenge started at Blackhawk in June. Erik Wood with his Alfa kept
Don Eichelberger at bay while John Connell came in third. We had the lovely Emily Hanson
(Miss Trans Am) come out, take pictures, and hand out T-shirts. The second event was at
Waterford Hills in July. With Joel Hershoren's help, the Trans Am B-Sedan group was able to
have John Morton, Horst Kwech, Tony Adamowicz, and Sylvia Wilkinson (the author of the
Stainless Steel Carrot, the Bible of Trans Am B- Sedan racing) race with us. Melanie Boria, and
Ashley Bennett were our lovely Miss Trans Am ladies.
The third race was at Road America with Midwestern Council. John Saccameno of Checkered
Past Vintage Racing Group was instrumental in getting this race on the Trans Am B-Sedan
calendar. Don Eichelberger took first with his trusty Datsun, John Connell came in second
place in his Datsun, and Dean Champeau came home third in his Datsun.
The fourth stop on the Trans Am schedule was Grattan Raceway, a great small sedan track.
The Trans Am B-Sedan race was dominated my new comer Greg Wold in his Mini Cooper.
Second place went to David Michele in his Alfetta and coming home third was Geoff Harris in
his BMW 2002. The fifth event was at VSCDA's ELVF at Road America. Emily Hanson and
Danielle Yancy were our Miss Trans Am ladies. We had a outstanding race. We weighed the
first three cars after the race to make sure they were legal weight. All the cars came up good on
the weight side. First place went to Bo Lemastus in his Alfa, second place went to Bill Abel in his
Alfa, and Don Eichelberger came in third in his Datsun. Two cars were disqualified for illegal
tires. Yes, a little controversy for the Trans Am B-Sedan fans.
The points chase was very close. Since I was remiss in keeping track all year, nobody really
had a idea who the winner was for the season. But, thanks to better record-keeping by my
brother, Chris, we were able to do the final calculations. Hint: Datsun wins the Trans Am BSedan series again.

Garrett Van Camp, winner of 2012 Dewey Dellinger Award
Garrett Van Camp Receives Dewey Dellinger Award
The Dewey Dellinger Memorial Award is a traveling trophy, awarded each year at Grattan, by a
vote of all Vee drivers, to the person who best represents a love of and dedication to Vintage
Vee Racing.
For the 2012 Race Season, the Vees are proud to present this award to veteran Vee driver
Garrett Van Camp. A long-term instructor in the VSCDA Driver’s School, Garrett is always the
first to share his years of experience with less seasoned drivers. He is also a willing source of
knowledge for car setup and often teaches with a hands-on style. In addition, he has crafted
several unique Vee accessories and tools to help make the cars easier to work on and safer to
drive. His “Golden Toe” setup bar is a perennial favorite at the drawings held at the VVV
trackside get-togethers. When we talk about Garrett being immersed in our sport, we are
barely scratching the surface.
Dewey Dellinger was founder of Victory Lane magazine and a true friend of Vintage Vee racing.
Dewey passed away in 1996 at the age of 47, after a long battle with cancer. Even after leaving
the magazine and giving up his on-track racing activities, Dewey would be at the track
entertaining us as track announcer. His fun-loving spirit is evidenced by his creation of the
Fabulously Fun Fishing Contest at Grattan’s pond and his winning the first Most Outrageous
Bathing Suit trophy at the Grattan pool. In the evenings, you could find Dewey holding court
outside his tiny Air Stream. The conversation often turned to the good old days of racing, or if
you just needed a compassionate listener, Dewey was your man.
With this award to Garrett, we remember and celebrate Dewey’s contributions to, and love of,
vintage racing and his fellow racers. Garrett was not able to join the Vee group at Grattan. He
was later notified of his winning of the award and sent us this kind thank you note:
“When Mike Kitzmiller called to tell me that I had been selected at Grattan to receive the Dewey
Dellinger Vintage Vee Award for 2012, I was both speechless and emotional. To receive the award
once is a great honor and to be selected by my peers a second time is unbelievable. It is wonderful to
be part of the VSCDA Formula Vee family, and I will do my best to honor Dewey in the future. Thank
you and see you at the Winter Party and at GingerMan.”
ELVF and the Fitch Phoenix Award

In 2010 we began to give the “Fitch Phoenix Award” at VSCDA’s ELVF. This year I was
asked what the award was for. I wrote a few brief sentences and e-mailed it off for VSCDA’s
Newsletter. The following morning we received an e-mail from Don Klein of Autoweek telling us
that John Fitch had passed away at 1:20 that morning. Suddenly, the few brief sentences didn’t
seem appropriate.
With John’s passing, the Internet and print have been filled with John’s
accomplishments. His list of racing successes is long and varied: first Sebring win, first SCCA
National Champion, two Elkhart Lake wins with Cunningham, class win for Mercedes at the
Mille Miglia, La Carrera Panamericana and the Le Mans Driver for Mercedes, two class wins at
Sebring for Corvette, and those are just the highlights. What first brought John and me together
was the fact that he won the 1951 Gran Prix of Argentina. Our 1949 XK120 had raced in that
event. My desire to have John sign the leather for the dash started our relationship.
Creating the “Fitch Phoenix” award would be easily understood based on John’s racing
accomplishments alone. But, in my mind, that was only a small part of the reason for honoring
John. The term “gentleman racer” most certainly came to mind to anyone who met John. That
era has passed, along with John. It was how he interacted with his fans and how they
responded to him that impressed me the most. John was amazingly accessible. You could call
him, and he would talk to you for an hour if you wanted. At the end of the conversation, he
would thank you profusely for taking the time out of your day to talk with him. I talked with him
many times and it was always the same.
We went to visit John in Connecticut and
spent the day at Lime Rock Park with him. He
gave me a ride to the track in his one off sports car
creation, the “Phoenix.” At one day shy of 92
years old, he just had to show me how much
power the car had. I admit it did make me a little
nervous. At the track, John was in his element.
We set up a little table by the “Phoenix” to sell his
posters and books. Every fan that stopped by got
a big sincere thank you for taking the time to stop
by. It didn’t make any difference whether they
bought something or just wanted to talk. John
confided in me his frustration with people that

would sign autographs, but you couldn’t read their
signatures. He said it was an honor for someone to ask for your autograph. He knew that they
were going to show it to their friends. He felt it was important they could read it clearly.
John never stopped thinking, forget about his age. He was amazingly sharp. His
problems with the state of Connecticut are well documented. That became a big job for John.
Despite him losing that battle, he found a positive outcome. He was going to take what he had
learned to help other people that were in the same
situation.
John was our guest at the ELVF in 2010 for
the 60th anniversary of racing at Elkhart Lake. We
were scheduled to do a parade lap Friday before
the Enduro. Before the lap he asked me to make
sure that I pointed out which corner was Turn
Twelve. He had designed a moveable armco-style
barrier. Years ago he had presented the idea to
Road America. He explained the process and his
sales pitch. He still felt that Turn Twelve was the
perfect corner to test his design.
I don’t think John ever grasped the concept
of old age. He just kept looking forward. At the age

his win at the 1951 Juan Peron Gran Premio of Argentina.
the one he won the Mille Miglia in. He didn’t
succeed. He told me that he hoped to go back again but not until they could get more
horsepower out of the motor. He wanted to go back only if he had a real chance at breaking a
record. That would have been at 93 years of age. John talked at length about his win in
Argentina. He won with a bent up, discarded Allard of Tommy Cole’s. His standup comedy line
about being kissed by Eva Peron and how she died shortly thereafter was his favorite story. He
played down the Argentina win. He told me; “You know, that wasn’t like a real Gran Prix.” John
was a humble man. He was passionate about racing, cars, challenges, people and living life.
The world is a little poorer with his passing.
So what is the “Fitch Phoenix Award”? VSCDA promotes competitive and friendly
racing. The cars are the stars. The goal is to create fair and friendly race groups. A big part of
that fairness is based on the honor system. That is what the “Vintage Spirit” is all about, and
those qualities were very much a part of John Fitch. His racing successes are well
documented. His 1951 and 1952 wins at Elkhart Lake are part of ELVF’s DNA. John
epitomized the true vintage spirit. Competition is important, but equally important is being
friendly and helpful, with a big focus on fun.
This year’s “Fitch Phoenix Award”
winner is Marv Primack. Marv is a long time
VSCDA member and participant at the
ELVF. Oh yeah, he is also the president of
VSCDA. When you have a racecar with
significant history you can display it or you
can take it out and continue to race it. Marv
has chosen the latter with his MG Lester. It
won at Goodwood before being exported to
the U.S. It then raced at the first-ever Road
America race in 1955. Today it is still being
raced hard in the true vintage spirit.

We launched our first-ever photo contest last year, and, based on popular demand, we are announcing
our second annual contest--the VSCDA 2012 PHOTO CONTEST. What’s the grand prize for the winning
picture? Your picture will be included in VSCDA’s ad in the January 2013 issue of Victory Lane! This is a
full-page ad announcing our 2013 Race Schedule.
So look back over the photos that you’ve taken at the track over the past season. The judges, led by our
creative director Chris Bonk, will be looking for the picture that best captures the Vintage Spirit. It could
be a dramatic shot of two cars dueling down a straight-away or it could be Dad working on the car with
his small son or daughter sitting in the cockpit.
Photo Contest Rules (what few there are):
*The photo must have been taken, and be submitted, by a current VSCDA member.
*Please send the photo in JPEG or TIF format.
*The photo should be e-mailed to [email protected] by midnight, November 30, 2012. Be sure
to include your full name and contact information in your email. Questions also can be sent to this email address.
*All photos will become the property of VSCDA. They will not be used for commercial purposes without
the photographer’s prior permission, such as the winning photo’s inclusion in Victory Lane. However,
some of the photos submitted may be used in the future on vscda.org.
The winner will be announced December 10, 2012, on vscda.org.
