very Thursday when the
Katy Rotary Club holds its
lunch meeting, attorney
avid Frishman gives his fellow members an update on the
Rotary's PolioPlus program, a
global initiative to eradicate polio through the mass vaccination
of children.
When he s nished, Frishman
always asks, "How close are we to
eradicating polio from the face
of the earth?"
"This close," comes the reply,
as Rotarians place their thumbs
and inde

leaving an inch or so between
them.
Rotary took up the cause back
in 1979 with it launched a polio
vaccination program for children
in the Philippines. Since then,
through its PolioPlus program,
Rotarians have contributed more
than $1.3 billion and countless
volunteer hours to immunize
more than 2.5 billion children
against polio in 122 countries.
In 1988, the Glo al Polio Eradication Initiative was esta lished,

he Rotary Club's 2015 Wild
West Brewfest smashed attendance and fundraising records as more than 6,000
guests helped the club push past
the $113,000 mark in net proceeds.
On Thursday, Aug. 27, at their
weekly luncheon meeting, Katy
Rotarians will be handing out
checks to the various nonprofits and community projects the
club supports.
"We took a risk by moving to
Katy Mills, but we believe that
this move paid off in spades for
us and for our recipients," said
Katy Rotarian David Loesch,
chairman of the Wild West Brewfest.
Attendance at the annual
event that celebrates the craft
beer industry almost doubled
this year. A total of 3,314 guests
made it to the 2014 event; this
year's attendance total was more
than 6,000.
“At the end of each event, we
survey our guests; overwhelmingly, the number one thing that
came back as positive was the
new space and the awesome selection of beer,” he said.
Loesch explained that the
Wild West Brewfest is one of the
only events in the Houston area
that is staffed completely by volunteers and has no management
fee involved.
''Our volunteers are passion-

MANY PROJECTS FUNDED
Loesch indicated that thanks
to the generous support of the
Brewfest's many sponsors, and
the tireless efforts of the Rotary
Club of Katy, the following projects are among those that will be
funded:
• Katy IS Fine Arts, 10,000.
This donation gives young students the opportunity to participate in band or orchestra who
otherwise could not afford to do
so.
''We want to support these
young Texans who have the desire and passion and display the
strong desire to study and excel,''
said Loesch.
This will be the fourth year
the Katy Rotary has donated to
the KIS
ne arts program. To
date, the donations have topped
$22,000.
• FFA Future Farmers of America), $16,000. This donation
helps kids who — for economic
reasons — might be excluded
from raising a project.
In addition, a portion of this
money will go towards the “Barn
Sale to assist students who do
not make the auction and, unfortunately, get minimal dollars
for their animals.
It is our o ective to help
change the 'minimal dollar' component to help offset the cost of
raising the project," explained
Loesch.

he City of Katy will soon
begin the expansion of
Morton Road from Katy
Hockley Cut-Off westward to
Pitts Road, according to City
Administrator Byron Hebert.
''The drainage study is complete and we're now in the design phase," Hebert told the
Katy Times.
Hebert said this project has
been in the city’s comprehensive plan — as well as Harris
County and Waller County
thoroughfare maps — for many
years and will be essential to alleviating future mobility and
drainage issues.

• The Shaw Center, 5,000.
The center provides young students the opportunity to collaborate with mentors and professionals to gain experience in
the areas of science, technology,
engineering, the arts, and mathematics.
• Future usiness eaders Conference, $2000. This donation
boosts a program that offers students the opportunity to attend
a conference and listen to guest
speakers such as Payton Manning, Warren Buffett, and Bill
Gates and many more. The program is designed to give all students an idea what it takes to be
successful in business world.
“We are excited to offer this
to students that show a desire to
attend, but cannot, due to economic reasons, said oesch.
• Katy Special odeo, 2000.
According to oesch, this donation gives special-needs children

The club's donation helps pay
the $30 fee for those students
who otherwise could not take
part because of economic reason.
• Children of the ump- icaragua, $3,000. This program
assists the young people of icaragua to learn how to support
their families.
''Unfortunately, this is a very
poor country where four million people live on less than $1
a day, there is one doctor for every 2,700 people and only half of
the population has access to the

''This is a great ongoing program that touches the lives of
many children, said oesch.

2014, a reduction of more than
99 percent since the 1980s,
when the world saw about

This year, said Frishman,
only 34 cases have been reported worldwide, with 28 coming
from Pakistan and six from Afghanistan. o cases have een
reported this year in igeria,
which was once considered to
be the gateway to polio.
However, the polio cases represented by the remaining one

poor public infrastructure,
armed conflict and cultural
barriers. Until polio is completely eradicated, all countries
remain at risk of outbreaks.

GETTING CHILDREN TO BRUSH
FFER
What’s the best way to get kids to brush?
Make it fun! If you are enthusiastic about brushing your teeth, your
children will also be enthusiastic. Children want to do the things
their parents do. If your children see you brushing your teeth and
displaying good dental habits, they will follow. Look around for creative ways to engage your children in brushing their teeth. If you
make it seem as if brushing is a fun thing to do, your children will
think so too!
Let your children brush your teeth. Then let them brush their own
teeth. You can also include a doll in this exercise. Follow up by
brushing their teeth correctly. Begin to take your children to the
dentist at an early age. Ask your dentist if you have any questions
about your child’s teeth.

The Harris County Office of
Homeland Security & Emergency Management (HCOHSEM)
has unveiled the third generation of its Regional Joint Information Center website, www.
readyharris.org.
The website, which was officially launched in 2011, serves
as the primary online emergency
information site for the county’s
more than 4.4 million residents.
This updated version improves
functionality and provides an
optimal viewing experience for
mobile devices.
“Communication with the
public is critical to our successful response to any disaster,”
said Harris County Judge Ed Emmett. ”Residents expect timely
information whether they are at
home or on the go. The improvements made to the website make
it easier for residents to get the
information they need, when
they need it.”
Completed in time for the
2015 hurricane season, the revamped website incorporates
responsive display technology.

To bring search engine optimization (SEO) within the
grasp of businesses of all sizes,
Hyperlinks Media has launched
the SEO Center, a Katy-based
digital library that contains information on internet marketing in all its facets.
The SEO Center provides
tips, strategies, analytical data,
videos, blog posts, and news,
completely free of charge. In
addition, the Center offers
members the unique ability to
visit and collaborate in person,
making it the first of its kind.
At the SEO Center’s location
near the Houston area, members can discuss their website’s
search engine rankings and
discover strategies for improvement, a distinction that sets
this asset apart from other SEO
resources.
Through these visits, members can receive experienced
guidance and advice regarding multiple aspects of their
marketing efforts. As a collective effort to provide the most
comprehensive SEO data, others are welcome to share their
research and ideas through the
SEO Center as well.
These efforts are intended to
give businesses free resources
to clear up the intimidating
world of SEO and online marketing.
Charles Mazzini, CEO of SEO
company Hyperlinks Media
explained, “With so much unreliable SEO information out
there, we built the SEO Center
to be a trusted source of quality
information, where businesses
can learn the facts of SEO and
how it can help them.”
While the SEO Center is
rooted within the Houston
area, members are invited to
join from anywhere in the US
and any industry.
The SEO Center can be found

clinic expands to Austin
Stone Creek Psychotherapy
and Wellness Inc., founded
more than 10 years ago in the
Katy/West Houston area, is excited to announce its expansion with the opening of their
new office in Austin on June 1.
The University of Houston
recently selected Stone Creek as
one of the Cougar 100 of 2014,
an honor awarded to fastestgrowing businesses owned and
led by UH Alumni.
Stone Creek Psychotherapy,
which has had tremendous
success and rapid growth, provides a wide variety of services
including individual and group
therapy, couple and marital
counseling, family therapy,
child and adolescent therapy,
ADHD assessments and therapy, and neurotherapy.
Under the direction of Stone
Creek owners Katy residents
Dianne Appolito, LCSW, and
Dana Debes, LCSW, the new expansion boasts an equally wide
range of services. UH Alumni
Sarah Osmer, LPC, has recently
been promoted to Program Director for the Austin location.
Appolito believes the growth
will be especially beneficial to
students attending university
in Austin or San Marcos.
“One of the reasons we’re so
excited is because we have so
many students from the Katy/
West Houston and surrounding
area that are attending universities in the central Texas region,” Appolito said.
“This gives us the opportunity to bridge our services and
provide continuity of care as
our clients transition into college,” she added.

org is a one-stop shop for the region during disasters.
“Harris County is a national
model for emergency preparedness and response,” added Emmett. “Coordination with our
partners to provide timely, accurate and life-saving information
during emergencies is a key element of that success.”
A soft launch of the website occurred in May, allowing
county responders to use www.
readyharris.org during the recent flooding event that affected
thousands. In addition to posting safety information, road closures and weather alerts, county
officials used the website to gather information on the number of
homes and businesses affected
by the floods. This allowed for a
better and timelier response, and
easier sharing of information
with residents.

Katyite publishes book for parents
of children who have special needs
Robyn (Rebecca Hall), Simon (Justin Bateman) and Gordo (Joel Edgerto) head up the cast of 'The Gift,"
playing this weekend at Alamo Drafthouse Cinema.
Twisted thriller is creepy so
unwrap 'The Gift' with care
This weekend, THE GIFT
opens at the Alamo Drafthouse
Cinema-Mason PARK. The film
is the directorial debut of actor
Joel Edgerton.
Best known for films such as
WARRIOR, THE GREAT GATSBY and EXODUS: GODS AND
KINGS, Edgerton has knocked a
home-run with his first featurelength film behind the camera.
In THE GIFT, Edgerton plays
Gordo, a mysterious man who
reenters the life of his old classmate Simon (Jason Bateman)
when they run into each other
at the mall. Gordo pushes and
shoves his way into Simon’s life
— dropping by unannounced
as his home to drop off small
gifts or help Simon’s wife (Rebecca Hall) with chores.
As Robyn, Hall suspects Gordo and Simon are hiding something about their shared past.
The paranoia and doubt begin
to unravel Simon and Robyn’s
marriage. But what if Robyn
isn’t
needlessly
paranoid?
What if Gordo and Simon are
hiding something — perhaps
even something deadly?
THE GIFT is a slow-burn
thriller in the style of the great
South Korean revenge dramas
such as OLDBOY. It’s a particularly nasty film that is told with
such care and dedication to the
story that audiences won’t help
but find themselves sucked into
the story’s dark descent into
oblivion.
A movie with twists and
turns such as THE GIFTS’ will
often lead audiences to madly
try and guess at the ending —
hoping to take a peek at the
darkness that awaits them. THE
GIFT, though, contains darkness all but unguessable.
If you are a fan of twisted
horror made for adults; if you’re
tired of the same old slasher
films that get shoved into theaters ad nauseam — don’t miss
your chance to catch THE GIFT
when it opens in theaters this
weekend.
The film will play at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema — Mason Park and Vintage Park and
trust me when I say that a cinema that serves beer is your best
choice for this film. You’ll need
the alcohol to numb the dread
this movie will elicit.

Parenting a child with special
needs can be a lonely journey, so
finding support is crucial for selfcare and resilience.
Rev. Dr. Lorna Bradley of
Katy, an ordained deacon in the
United Methodist Church and
parent of an adult son on the
autism spectrum, saw a need for
emotional and spiritual support
of parents raising children with
special needs.
She wrote Special Needs Parenting: From Coping to Thriving to
equip parents with tools to cope
with common challenges, helping them build personal and family resilience. This book includes
discussion questions in each
chapter and is suitable for small
groups or individual readers.
“Something special happens
when you're in a small group
with others who understand the
journey you're on. When you're
parenting a child with special
needs, even if you're in the room
with parents of neuro-typical
children, you can feel incredibly
isolated,'' said Bradley, a Fellow
at the Hope and Healing Institute in Houston.
''The things they talk about
are different. Their struggles and
victories are so different from
Dr. Lorna Bradley
ours. When you're part of a small
group with other parents of children with special needs, even if
the diagnoses are different, you
find mutual understanding,”
said Bradley.
Special Needs Parenting is a book
written specifically for parents
like herself who are raising children with special needs. It gives
parents the tools to help them
cope with the spiritual and emotional challenges that come with
parenting a child with special
needs. Many may feel that they
don’t have time to read a book,
but Bradley strongly encourages
parents of special needs children
to take the time to equip themselves to better handle the stresses that come their way.
“How we fuel ourselves when
things go well helps prepare us
for when things aren't going
well. Take care of yourself the
best you can — your emotional
health and your spiritual health,
so that when you are parenting
kids with special needs you are
the most resilient person you
can be,” she said.
Special Needs Parenting is available for purchase through Amazon and Huff Publishing Associates. Learn more about Rev. Dr.
Lorna Bradley on her website:

Katy Contemporary Arts Museum
taking part in Houston Art Fair
Artists of all mediums have
helped create a collaborative
piece for this year’s Houston
Fine Art Fair, taking place Sept.
9-12. An opportunity presented
by the Katy Contemporary Arts
Museum (KCAM) titled ''Pieces
of Texas Project'' helped blend
the creativity of artists in greater
Houston area.
KCAM sought to bring artists from all backgrounds, ability, age, and mediums together
to take part in this eco-friendly
art collaboration representative
of Houston — a place known
for its urban sprawl, unparalleled innovation and the largest
number of artists in the state.
The artistic theme of ''Pieces
of Texas'' is centered around repurposing and revitalizing. Local artists and architects were
asked to jointly"make something'' from discarded wood,
plastic and metal, which will
then become part of the permanent KCAM collection.
The selected pieces have been
delivered to KCAM and the assembly of the sculpture project
is under way.
''The Pieces of Texas resembles
Houston, the most diverse city
in the country where nothing is impossible and distances
are measured in hours…”, said
KCAM Museum Director and
Curator Ana Villaronga-Roman.
“The arts in the city and in
the “burbs” are alive and here is
the proof! Artists living in Katy,
Cypress, West Houston, Sugar
Land along with the greater
Houston metropolitan area are
now engaged and getting involved due to the partnership
between KCAM and the Houston Fine Art Fair,'' added Villaronga-Roman.
After the debut of the ‘Pieces
Of Texas Project’ at the Houston
Fine Art Fair, a tour is in place
for the prodigious sculpture
starting at LaCenterra in Cinco
Ranch, No Label Brewery, and
other Katy locations yet to be
announced. The final stop will
be at the Katy Contemporary
Art Museum.

Tompkins gets jump on football drills
Serving as the news source for the Greater Katy Area since 1913
Tompkins suffered through
a 0-10 season last year in the
Falcons' first year at the varsity
level of football.
With that year of experience
under their belt, Tompkins is
more than ready for its second
season in District 19-6A and is
ready to claim that first football
win in the school's history.
The Tompkins Falcons did
not hold spring football drills
this year.
“We didn’t do it because of
the numbers,” said Tompkins
Head Football Coach Tony Tademy.
Last year the Falcons in their
first year of varsity football
only had 33 players. Many of
them played both offense and

“We didn’t feel like it was
really conducive to do spring
football this year. Because we
didn’t do spring football we get
an extra week of practice this
fall,” Tademy said.
Tompkins hit the football
field Monday, Aug. 3 and will
not be in pads until Friday, Aug.
7 but the early week of training
is just what Tademey hopes it
will bring to the program.
“I’m excited about this coming year; our coaches and kids
are excited," Tademy said. "It’s a

The kids have worked hard in
their off-season. We are looking

FALL 2015
Three Katy players were
named to the Touchdown Club
of Houston's UIL High School
All-Greater Houston Preseason
Team recently.
Seniors Kyle Porter, Paddy
Fisher and Collin Wilder were
all selected to the team which
projects the area's top football
talent coming into the upcoming 2015 season.
The trio will be honored at
the Touchdown Club's Touchdowner of the Year Dinner Aug.
12 at the J.W. Marriott in Houston.
This year, former Houston
ISD athletic director Joe Tusa
will be honored with the Touchdowner of the Year award.
Porter is expected to shoulder the majority of the rushing
load for Katy this year as the

In Fisher and Wilder, Katy
has two main cogs of its defensive side of the ball, which is
expected to be very tough this
coming season.

All online classes are taught
by Katy ISD teachers who hold
Texas certification for their
courses, as well as a Virtual In-
structor's Certification through
Texas A&M.
KVS courses offered for the
2015-2016 school year are:
