Castrol Edge and Classic Cover Insurance Ltd NZHRA 50th Anniversary Dinner. Past and present members of the New Zealand Hot Rod Association reunited together for the Castrol Edge and Classic Cover Insurance Ltd NZHRA 50th Anniversary Black Tie Dinner at Te Papa, on the evening of Saturday 19th November 2011. Each guest received NZHRA mementoes and were the first recipients of the 80 page NZHRA Hot Rodding Memory book. The tables were surrounded by 12 foot high canvas prints of never before seen art work, drawn back in the 60’s by Rob Campbell - thanks to the efforts of John Pavlovich and the Scroungers - four cars were on display, including the CenturyYuasa 2011 NZHRA Hot Rod Lottery 1926 Ford Roadster. A photo slide show of the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and the new millennium courtesy of Paul Grace flashed across the screen as guests dined on the five course meal. MC Mike Currie from the Radio Hauraki Road Train entertained the crowd and introduced special guests including Bill Mudgway (instigator of the NZHRA back in 1961) and the first recipients of the NZHRA RSH Awards. A huge thank you to our Sponsors of the evening Castrol Edge and Classic Cover Insurance Ltd, and all the wonderful people who made the NZHRA 50th Anniversary Dinner something special. Photos from the evening can be found on our website www.hotrod.org.nz The winning Lottery ticket for the CenturyYuasa 2011 NZHRA Hot Rod Lottery was #17000 William “Bill” Thompson from Thames. Bill was delivered the Roadster at 1pm on the 30th November at the Corogate Cafe, SH25, Waitakaruru, Hauraki Plains. The first recipients of the RSH Awards are as follows: Media Category Rob Campbell Commercial/Supply & Manufacture Category Pete Osborne Graeme Berry Garth Hogan Barry Livermore Ralph Wright and Daryl Gates The RSH Award is an Honour Roll about people who have put hot rodding on the map for New Zealand. NZHRA Clubs are asked to put forward nominations for the Classes every five years. There are three classes for the awards, these are: Commercial Supply Manufacture Those who have put Hot Rodding on the map in New Zealand through their supply, manufacture or have commercial involvement in hot rodding. Media Those who have put Hot Rodding on the map in New Zealand through media publications or support in the media. The first presentations will be awarded at the Castrol Edge & Classic Cover Insurance Ltd NZHRA 50th Anniversary Dinner. Every five years there will be up to five people placed on the list. It is a little something for our Hot Rodding kids, here is an email we received the other day.... “Just a great big thank you for brightening up my sons day. I signed him up as a NZHRA Junior after being at the Port Road Drags and he received his membership today. The biggest smile came across his face once he opened it and then started screaming ‘Mum, Mum look what I got from those cool car men.’ Now he wants me to get a ‘cool car.’ I think its a wonderful idea having this for the kids. We’ll definitely be looking out for upcoming events in our area”. Voluntary Category Ralph Wright Tony Johnson Brian Ward Errol Uttinger Elaine Uttinger In 1974, I (Steve Day), bought my Custom Line and Bruce Robertson had a 56 Ranch Wagon, Clyde Robertson had a 1955 Ranch Wagon, Paul Enright had a Spinner, Ian hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh had a 1958 Gold Flash, Chris Hall had a Twin Spinner, John Ruesink had a 1957 Ford, Peter Ferris had a 55 Cusso, Dennis Maxted had a MK 1 Cortina - then his 1956 Chevy later. Any way we all knocked about together for some time, as most of us had known each other from school and parties that you just turned up at. We heard about rod clubs and decided to join just to not be a gang. We had our first meeting at a house First recipients of the RSH Awards, from left: Ralph Wright, Graeme Berry, Garth Hogan, Pete Osborne, Paul Grace (accepting on behalf of Rob Campbell), Errol Uttinger, Brian Ward, Elaine Uttinger, Tony Johnson. Absent Rob Campbell and Barry Livermore. NZHRA ON THE WEB http://www.hotrod.org.nz We had to change our name from Blenheim Custom Car and V8 Club as they didn’t like it and Bruce came up with Sun Valley Roadsters (we never had a roadster for years). We then had a big bust up losing 15 members, but the Club carried on and on and on. Initially we had our meetings at members houses, few story’s there, then they were held in an old shop. Club members have come and gone over the years (no one has changed the world) and some great cars have come and gone. The club has had heaps of rod runs and lots of South Islanders would have a story - free top shelf (Jugs of it!), people found in strange places the next morning, great bands like Tom Sharplin and the Cadillac’s (who?). The club assisted Nelson with the running of the driving events at the first Nationals they held. Then they have run their very own hugely successful runs including the 2010 Nationals . Over the years people have left the area only to return and re-join the club and that combined with the surge of interest in cars and the availability of American imports has seen a real boost to the club membership levels and interest . Plus we are easier to entertain now. Steve Day - (I think Ian Deboo would be the next longest member in the Club). Club history, Event history, tid bits and more! Register your kids today via the website or send Bobbie@hotrod. org.nz an email - with your child’s name, postal address, contact phone number and birth date. Every two months our Junior Members receive a newsletter filled with jokes, Membership is open to kids under the age puzzles, interesting facts and more! of 16 and NZ residents. Before most people now in the Club were born... in North Street that Chris Hall was renting. All the above people were there. Bonny Stanley (later to marry Paul Enright) took minutes . Dennis was in touch with the Nelson Club so we loaded into Johns 57 and Peter Ferris 55 and went to a meeting in Nelson. There was Peter Ferris, Dennis Maxted, Bruce Robertson, John Ruesink and myself, we all looked younger then (Ian Jones and Bevan Bennett were there too, that I remember). Dennis got a copy of the Constitution and set things going. http://www.facebook.com/pages/NZ-Hot-Rod-AssociationInc/199810803376806 NZHRA OFFICE - Open 9am - 5pm Monday to Friday Postal Address PO Box 454, Tauranga 3140 Phone 07 575 7606 * Fax: 07 575 7454 * Web: www.hotrod.org.nz * Email: [email protected] 30 $ + $5 courier The 80 page full colour Book of NZHRA Hot Rodding Memories has been made possible thanks to the photos, articles and stories shared by the following people Bill Mudgway, Roger Sharpe, Wayne Sharpe, Ralph Wright, Rhys Rogers, Chris Harris, David Mead, Errol and Elaine Uttinger, Ian McNeill, Peter “Woody” Woodhouse, Paul Servantie, Val Mollet, Alan Hughes, Kimmbo McKenzie, Julie Bennett, Peter “Buck” Rodgers, Sharon Paki, Darlene and Richard Lang, Geoff Sadler, Neil Arden and Kevin Saunders, Greg Stokes, Robyn Watkins, Mark Downey, Graham and June Weeks, Brian and Lynley Ward, Alan Hughes, Paul Bouman, Peter Addis, John Burndred, Wayne Holmberg, Jane Jolly, Steve Hill, Steve Day, Peter Amon, Noddy Watts, Justin Hansen, Sue Kincaid, Jo Henderson, Bobbie Kincaid, the Executive of the NZHRA and those behind the scenes who would rather not be mentioned.
