Thomas Milovac Bass, Symphonic Years in FSYO: 2 College: University of North Florida Major: Jazz Bass Amy Likamwa Violin, Symphonic Years in FSYO: 9 College: University of Florida Major: Pre-Professional Biology Amy LiKamWa is a senior at Winter Park High School and also the orchestra president of her school orchestra. Amy began playing the piano when she was 3 years old and the violin when she was 8. Starting as a 4th grader in Overture, she is thankful for all the valuable friends and experiences she has gained through FSYO. She was a participant in All County Orchestra since 6th grade (except in 8th grade when her sister’s wedding and the concert date conflicted.) Her high school years have been incredibly busy with studying in the IB program, playing on the varsity tennis team, teaching Sunday school, leading French Honor Society, drumming a dragonboat team, and playing piano and violin. She plans to continue playing the violin in the symphony orchestra at the University of Florida while majoring in pre-professional biology. She aspires to be a pediatrician. John McHale Bass Trombone, Symphonic Years in FSYO: 1 College: Sante Fe to UF Major: Applied Physiology and Kinesiology I have been playing the trombone for 7 years now and have just recently joined the FSYO. I am an Eagle Scout with my Bronze and Gold Palms. In the past, I have made it into the Florida All State Band and the Seminole County All County Band. I plan on going to Santa Fe and transferring to UF to study medicine and continue my studies on the bass trombone. Thomas has been accepted to the Manhattan School of Music, Berklee College of Music, the New England Conservatory, and the University of North Florida School of Music. He is the originator, leader and arranger for his high school’s first all student led jazz combo, the East Ridge Jazz Combo, which has received numerous superior ratings and awards at various music competitions. He was the only bassist selected for the 2015 All State Jazz Band and the UCF All Star High School Jazztet. He is also president of his high school Tri M Music Society. He has a love of history, art, and literature and will be graduating Summa Cum Laude from East Ridge High School. Juan Morrell Rincon Cello, Symphonic Years in FSYO: 2 College: University of Central Florida Major: Computer Programming The first time I picked up a cello seven years ago, I played so horribly that everyone would tell me to shut up. However, through practice and hard work , and despite not having a private tutor, I managed to audition, and get accepted into FSYO. I’ve also managed to become the primary cellist for my school’s Symphonic and Chamber orchestras. Even though I don’t plan to earn a degree in music yet, it’s not something I’m going to give up. I’ll keep practicing as hard as any professional. Laura Myers Violin, Philharmonia Years in FSYO: 5 College: University of Florida Major: Biology While attending an Orlando Philharmonic Family Series as a kindergartner, Laura tried the “stringed instrument petting zoo” and fell in love with the violin. She started lessons with violin teacher Mary Bos at St. Luke’s School of the Arts and currently studies violin with Mary at her teaching studio. Laura has participated in All County Orchestra during both middle and high school and has received Superior ratings every time she has competed in Solo and Ensemble. She is currently Concert Mistress of the Olympia High School Symphony Orchestra and second chair of the Olympia High School Camerata Orchestra. In addition to her many years of playing the violin, Laura also dances and is a member of National Honor Society, Science National Honor Society, and Rho Kappa History Honor Society. She will be continuing with her music while majoring in Biology at UF. Laura shares her love of music with other family members who are also musicians. She finds great joy in playing music with them and it’s safe to say the house is never quiet when they all get together. Laura would like to thank her private teacher Mary Bos for many years of musical instruction and inspiration. Without her she wouldn’t be where she is today. She would also like to thank Michael Simpson for being not only her school orchestra director, but also her FSYO Conductor this season. Laura has enjoyed being a part of FSYO because it has given her many new experiences and allowed her to develop her musical personality. Laura will cherish all of the memories she has made as a member of FSYO and will carry them with her for the rest of her life. While at Brevard, John studied violin with Atlanta Symphony second violinist (and FSYO alumnus) Jay Christy, and Professor Carolyn Huebl (Vanderbilt University). For two years running, John’s string quartet represented the Brevard high school program for the Shanghai Quartet master class. This past summer, John was one of only two high school students selected to perform for the college master class with Noah Bendix-Balgley, First Concertmaster of the Berlin Philharmonic. In October, John participated in the National Honors Ensemble Orchestra in Nashville, Tennessee. He served as third chair, second violin for the ensemble’s final performance at the Grand Ole Opry under the baton of Maestro Jung Ho. John is proud to have twice been a finalist for the Bach Festival Young Artist Competition and a first prize winner for concerto in Florida regional competition. He is a two-time winner of the FSYO Concerto Competition. In his (practically nonexistent) free time John is an avid bibliophile, saxophonist and Doctor Who fanatic. John will be attending Vanderbilt University in the Fall, planning to doublemajor in Violin Performance and Computer Science. Carlos Huertas Trumpet, Symphonic Years in FSYO: 1 College: Undecided Major: Music Education Carlos started playing trumpet in the 7th grade due to his inability to get good at his art class in 6th grade. So, he tried band and ever since he’s only wanted to get better and always improve. One thing Carlos can say he is decent at is high notes. He’s not quite sure how it happened, maybe when his friend Joey Dies went “a F wow that’s all you got ?” Now he is at the point in trumpet where 90 percent of the time he doesn’t know what note he is playing, stereotypical trumpet playing right there. A lot of the time Carlos is asked “when will you need to play that high?” He responds with “never”. His goal in playing trumpet is to one day be able to play for a movie sound track. “Who wouldn’t want to walk in a movie and remember every moment of the score and hope to god you don’t hear yourself crack a note.” Carlos hopes in life he will be able to make a living while always being able to play trumpet. Joining FSYO gave him a chance to play with the best brass section he’s been apart of every weekend and he will truly miss that and the people he’s meet. He has been a part of the music community since elementary school when he (and all of the other kids) played recorder. He started Clarinet in 6th grade and little did he know that one simple class would grow into something that he wanted to do for the rest of his life. He doubled Clarinet and Saxophone in 8th grade and went on to high school, where he discovered things such as chamber ensembles, jazz band, marching band and started to explore solo repertoire in his private study. IHefell in love with the thought of making beautiful music that can move souls, including his own. From marching in the band of over 150 musicians, to the wind ensemble of 50, the Clarinet Choir of 10, and taking the stage himself performing a plethora of solos - all of these things opened his eyes to explore what the music industry had to offer. That is why he auditioned for the Florida Symphony Youth Orchestra. When the day came to audition for FSYO, he was ecstatic, and even more ecstatic when he found out that he had made the Philharmonia Orchestra. He started private lessons with the Professor of Clarinet at Stetson University, Dr. Lynn Musco. “She opened all the doors that I have in front of me today,” including a “full-ride” scholarship to college. Jaime Van Malleghem Cello, Symphonic Years in FSYO: 1 College: University of Florida Major: Music and Aerospace Engineering Jaime’s involvement with music began in elementary school when she started taking piano lessons, but she stopped soon after playing cello in sixth grade. In seventh grade she started playing viola as well as taking cello lessons, which she’s continued with since. For Jaime’s first three years of high school she spent every day after school at three hour rowing practices and almost every weekend at another practice or a regatta. As she came into her senior year, she decided to leave rowing and commit herself solely to academics and music, although she ended up becoming very involved in clubs at school as well. The first step into her transition away from rowing was auditioning for FSYO in the August wave of auditions. Although she’s always been very involved in music, participating in three years of FSU Summer Music Camps, All-county orchestra, school orchestra, cello lessons and various other groups and concerts, Jaime really wanted something more and for her, the clear thing to do was to audition for FSYO. After she was offered a seat in the cello section, she knew leaving rowing would be a good decision and everything that has followed in rehearsals and concerts has proved nothing but that. This year Jaime graduates in the top 20 of her class and she is excited to be joining the cello studio at the University of Florida and pursuing a double major of Music and Aerospace Engineering. “I am grateful for my opportunity to participate in FSYO. Although I regret that I waited until my senior year to audition, being in FSYO has been an incredible experience and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it. “ The Symphonic Orchestra VIOLIN I Emily Erdman Concertmaster John Horzen Associate Concertmaster Hannah Lindvall Assistant Concertmaster Timothy Vu Anna Horzen Pataraporn “Prayo” Smitasin Evonne Zhu Bryan Fu Kate Goodin Emily Schenck VIOLIN II Julie Di Lecce Principal Jenna Carson Assistant Principal Jenna Chen Caleb Diaz Krystin Harrison Vivek Suri Amy LiKamWa Phil Lee Lily Aydt Gayoung Choi Alexandra Fulbright Marissa Magnelli Saumya Sao VIOLA Alex Koller Principal Molly Pope Assistant Principal Landon Padgett Arielle Fentress Varisa Gumpangkum Sanuki Prematilleke Ted Panos CELLO Jean-Marie Glazer Principal Julie Foroosh Assistant Principal Lili Pope Benjamin Slaby Antoinette Thomas Juan Morrell Rincon Jaime Van Malleghem Corey Hsiao BASS Edwin Rivera Principal Dillon Wilson Thomas Milovac Anna Leedy HARP Sophia Fulbright Principal FLUTE Isabel Aviles Principal 1st Alexander Davadilla Principal 2nd Laz Breunig Asst. 2nd OBOE Kayla Wegner Principal 1st Colton Potter Principal 2nd CLARINET Brandon Stacy Principal 1st Alexander Vaquerizo Principal 2nd Dylan Aguayo 2nd BASSOON Lauryn Sparger Principal Keejin Yoon Principal 2nd HORNS Sloan Stephens Principal Elena Malcolm 2nd Alyssa Pokorny 3rd Tyler Stephens 4th TRUMPET Benjamin Cendan Principal Jacob Bartfield 2nd Carlos Huertas 3rd TROMBONE Samuel George Principal Joey Dies 1st/2nd Sam Dufresne 2nd BASS TROMBONE John McHale Principal TUBA Thomas Sims Principal PERCUSSION Christopher Hightower Matthew Ohrberg Jakob Schoenfield The Symphonic Orchestra is under the direction of Mr. Matthew Davis.
