of the fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. While U.S. unemployment is about 4.7%, those vets have a 15.6% jobless rate. Why? Some
employers have illegally fired returning National Guard and Reserve troops, while others are afraid to hire combat vets who may suffer
from post-traumatic stress. At hirevetsfirst.gov vets can find job advice, and employers can post help-wanted ads.
Americans everywhere value the service and sacrifice of our young men and women serving in the conflicts overseas as part of
the global war on terror. The Bath VA Medical Center’s goal is to ensure that every seriously injured or ill serviceman and woman
returning from combat receives priority consideration and world-class service.
Every active-duty service member, Reservist or National Guard member who serves in a theater of combat operations is eligible for
hospital care, medical services, and nursing home care for injuries or illnesses he or she believes is related to combat service for a period
up to five years beginning on the date of discharge or release from service. This five-year eligibility for medical care is available even if
there is insufficient medical evidence available to conclude that the veteran’s illness is the result of combat service. At the end of the fiveyear period, these veterans have the same eligibility for VA medical care as veterans of earlier conflicts.
VA offers a spectrum of health care and benefit programs for veterans of the war on terrorism, including disability compensation,
vocational rehabilitation, prosthetic services, life insurance, pension, education benefits, specially adapted housing and automobile grants,
and survivor and burial benefits. On the front of the VA entrance is a sign that says, “The Price of Freedom is Visible Here.”

The Steuben County Legislature has authorized Tire Amnesty Days for Steuben
County residents.
This offers County residents a way to keep roadsides clean. Also, the threat of West
Nile Virus is minimized from mosquitoes collecting in standing water inside the tires.
Residents of Steuben County may bring a maximum of eight (8) tires per vehicle for
recycling no charge; car and truck tires. More than eight (8) tires per vehicle will be
charged at $2.50 per tire. Large truck tires will be $13 each.
