Chapter 1 Overview 1.1 About ADSL Asymmetry Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) technology provides high-speed data access across common phone lines (copper wires) by making use of previously unused frequency bandwidth above the voice band. ADSL signal uses different frequency from the voice signal. ADSL service is able to coexist with your telephone service on the same line. ADSL is asymmetric in the sense that it provides higher data rate in the downstream (receive) direction than in the upstream (transmit) direction. Asymmetric operation is ideal for home and small office use where files and information are downloaded more frequently than uploaded. 1.2 Features The MT810 has the following features: z USB interface, Plug-and-Play z Bus-powered, external power supply is not required z Compatible with T1.413, G.dmt, G.lite and multimode z Adjusts speed automatically z Supports UBR/VBR/CBR ATM z Provides DSL downstream data rates up to 8 Mbps, and upstream rates up to 1024 Kbps z Supports Windows, Macintosh, and Linux z Windows or Macintosh GUI management z Power consumption: less than 2W 1-1 User Manual SmartAX MT810 ADSL CPE Chapter 1 Overview z Operating Environment: 0 OC~+50 OC z Weight: 100g 1.3 Protocols z Complies with T1.413, G.dmt (G.992.1), G.lite (G.992.2) z Complies with RFC1483, RFC2364(PPPoA), RFC2516(PPPoE) z Complies with USB1.1 1.4 Cautions 1) Do not connect the ADSL to the telephone line directly; it is recommended to connect it to the splitter’s “MODEM” port. 2) Make sure the adapter does not have capacitances, diodes and so on. 3) The MT810 is only for indoor use. 4) Always keep the MT810 dry. 5) Keep away from high power consuming machine; avoid electromagnetic interference and heat. 6) This product has been designed to comply with the requirements on environmental protection. The Configuration page appears with Encapsulation Type Bridged LLC SNAP. The VPI and VCI options control the path of the ATM packets that are sent by the modem. The value that you choose for Encapsulation Type will determine whether your modem is exposed to the operating system as a network-type device or as a modem-type device. The choices that begin with PPP will cause the operating system to view your 2-60 User Manual SmartAX MT810 ADSL CPE Chapter 2 Installation and Configure modem as a modem-type device, and the remaining options will cause the operating system to view your modem as an Ethernet-type device. 3) Click the Bridged LLC SNAP menu. If you change any settings on the Configuration page of the Huawei Monitor, you must Save Changes. Then close the Huawei Monitor, unplug the USB cable from your modem, and then re-plug the USB cable into the modem; otherwise, the new settings will not take. 2-61 User Manual SmartAX MT810 ADSL CPE Chapter 2 Installation and Configure 2.5 TCP/IP and Internet Access 2.5.1 TCP/IP Setup 1) Go to the Control Panels submenu of the Apple menu. Select and click TCP/IP in the menu via pull-down menu below. 2) Select and click ADSL USB Modem1 for Ethernet Mode, or select and click PPP for Modem Mode in the Connect via menu via pull-down below. 3) Select Configure: Using DHCP Server from the drop-down menu. Most ADSL providers will offer Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) as their IP Address. DHCP will automatically set up the proper numbers when your connection is established (as shown in the Ethernet Mode window above). 2-62 User Manual SmartAX MT810 ADSL CPE Chapter 2 Installation and Configure You should choose Using DHCP Server if you do not see an IP Address in the numbering format: 192.168.1.2. They do not appear in the example above. 4) Select Configure: Manually and then enter the provider’s numbers in the appropriate locations. Sometimes we need to configure IP address manually to connect to the ISP. In that case, select Configure: Manually from the drop-down menu. 5) Select Using DHCP Server. If you have chosen PPP to be your TCP/IP connection tool, you have the same choices as if you had chosen Ethernet plus an option called Using PPP Server. Your ADSL service provider determines the choice. 2-63 User Manual SmartAX MT810 ADSL CPE 6) Chapter 2 Installation and Configure Select Using PPP Server. When your modem is configured for Ethernet mode, the Macintosh Operating System actually views your ADSL modem as if it were a regular Ethernet network adapter, which is the easiest type of configuration to use. Unfortunately, most ADSL providers do not support this type of connection. If your ADSL service provider does not support Ethernet mode and you are connecting to the ADSL provider via PPP protocol, you must continue on to the REMOTE ACCESS section below. 2.5.2 Internet Connect When the Macintosh operating system is configured for Modem mode, it actually views your ADSL modem as a ‘regular’ analog modem. It does not affect the performance of your high-speed Internet connection; however, it does affect the way you configure the operating system to complete the connection. Because the operating system views that you have a ‘regular’ modem attached to your computer, you must configure the Apple Remote Access Dialer application to connect to the Internet. 1) Click the Remote Access icon at your Control Panels menu. 2) Click the Options button to change the Remote Access options. 3) Click the Protocol tab and make sure that the Protocol options are configured as shown below. 2-64 User Manual SmartAX MT810 ADSL CPE 4) Chapter 2 Installation and Configure Click OK to save the options and return to the main Dialer Setup page. 5) Select the Remote Access menu. 6) Select and click Modem. 7) Select your ADSL modem instead of an analog modem that may be either built-in or connect to your Macintosh computer. z Select ADI PPPoX Device in the Connect Via pull-down menu. z Select Null Modem 115200 in the Modem pull-down menu. 2-65 User Manual SmartAX MT810 ADSL CPE 8) Chapter 2 Installation and Configure Click the small square in the upper-left corner to return to the Remote Access setup window. 9) Enter your username and password as provided by your ADSL provider. Enter a 1 in the phone number box. (The driver does not number, but the dialer needs to see a phone number there in order for the dialing process to work really dial a phone.) 2-66 User Manual SmartAX MT810 ADSL CPE Chapter 2 Installation and Configure 10) Once you have verified that all of the information is correct, click the square in the upper-left corner to save the configuration and close the window. 2.6 Software Uninstallation Remove the USB ADSL Modem software drivers by taking the following steps: 1) Double-click the Huawei USB ADSL Classic icon in the package file. 2) The rest process of installation is similar to that under Macintosh OS X, refer to parts 2.6 Software Uninstall in OS X as before. For Linux OS 2.1 Hardware Installation The hardware installation of the MT810 under Linux OS is the same as that under Windows OS. 2.2 Software Installation This document intends to outline the steps required to install the Linux driver for USB ADSL modems. The driver is compatible with most of the Linux distributions such as RedHat, SuSE, and Mandrake. The installation is script based and therefore, is not limited to different Linux distribution packaging methods. The installation package consists of the following directories: 2-67 User Manual SmartAX MT810 ADSL CPE z ADI_DRIVER z ADI_PPPOA z ADI_PPPOE Chapter 2 Installation and Configure For each Linux distribution, there is an installation script. The installation scripts are located in the ADI_DRIVER directory. Each script has two input arguments, one is the full path of the driver installation directory (or “. /” if you already changed the directory to that location), and the other is the directory name of the kernel source code located in the “/usr/src/” directory. (For example, in RedHat 8.0 the directory name of the kernel source code is “linux-2.4.18-14”). The following is the synopsis of the Installation scripts: 1) ./Install distribution “driver_installation_directory” “kernelSource_dirName”. 2) For instance, if you want to install the driver in SuSE version 8.0, and the current directory is ADI_DRIVER, the following is the command:./Install_SUSE8.1 ./ linux-2.4.19.SuSE Note: To determine the current kernel version, you can run “uname –a”. This name is usually the same as that of kernel source code directory; you have to go to /usr/src/ to confirm this. (For example, in SuSE 8.1 uname returns 2.4.19-4GB while the actual directory name in /usr/src/ is linux-2.4.19.SuSE). 2-68 User Manual SmartAX MT810 ADSL CPE Chapter 2 Installation and Configure 2.2.1 Pre-installation notes 1) Install the kernel source prior to the driver installation. Kernel source code is located in “/usr/src/” directory. Refer to your Linux distribution manual for instructions on installing the kernel source code. 2) You should login as root. 3) Make sure the modem is not connected to the USB cable. You should plug in the modem when the installation is successfully completed. 2.2.2 Installation steps 1) Insert the attached installation disk into your CD-ROM, and there are three files in the /mnt/cdrom/Drivers/Linux directory: ADI_DRIVER, ADI_PPPOA, and ADI_PPPOE. 2) Change the directory to. …/Drivers/Linux /ADI_DRIVER 3) Run the installation scripts, To install the driver in SuSE version 8.0, run the command /Install_SUSE8.1 ./ linux-2.4.20-8 4) Plug in the modem when the message appears at the end of the installation, prompting “ADI USB ADSL driver installed successfully” . 2.3 Installation Confirmation When the installation is completed, the following directories are created: I. /usr/ADI_USB/ADI_LINUX. This directory contains the following files/directory: 1) gostatic 2-69 User Manual SmartAX MT810 ADSL CPE Chapter 2 Installation and Configure This script is used to assign a static IP address. z Synopsis: ./gostatic ADIModem ip-address subnet-mask. z Example: ./gostatic ADIModem 10.10.10.10 255.255.255.0. 2) godhcp This scrip is used to obtain a dynamic ip-address through DHCP. Synopsis: ./godhcp ADIModem. 3) ifcfgeth This is the driver interface configuration. 4) stopip This script brings down the network driver. Synopsis: ./stopip ADIModem. 5) . ADI_SRC directory This directory contains the driver source code and other necessary files. II. /etc/analog This directory contains the driver configuration files and firmware codes: z adiusbadsl.conf z This is the driver configuration file. By editing this file you can configure the driver (For example settings VPI/VCI, ENCAPSULATION, ADSL standard, and so on.). z You can also choose to use a CMV file to configure the modem during the boot time (Set LineType to 10). 2-70 User Manual SmartAX MT810 ADSL CPE z Chapter 2 Installation and Configure CMVei.txt It is the CMV file for ISDN Modems. z CMVep.txt z CMV file for POTS Modems. z Rtbldei0.bnm, Rtbldei1.bnm, Rtbldei2.bnm, Rtbldei3.bnm, Rtbldei4.bnm (ISDN firmware code). z Rtbldep0.bnm, Rtbldep1.bnm, Rtbldep2.bnm, Rtbldep3.bnm, Rtbldep4.bnm (POTS firmware code). 2.4 Internet Access 2.4.1 Bridge Mode LLC (LAN) configuration To configure the modem in the bridge mode do as follows first: 1) Run “ifconfig –a”. Make sure the ADIModem interface is reported by ifconfig. 2) Edit /etc/analog/adiusbadsl.conf z Set VPI and VCI. Values are in HEX; defaults are 00000000 and 00000020 respectively. (Note: do not use 0x in front of the numbers). z Set Encapsulation to 1 (Bridge Mode). z Set LineType to 10 (If you want to use the default CMV file). Now you can get an IP address through DHCP or set a static IP address running the stopip script: 1) Bridge mode using static IP Address: z Change the directory to /usr/ADI_USB/ADI_LINUX. z Run “./gostatic ADIModem ip-address subnet-mask”. z Run ifconfig again to confirm the IP Address assignment. z Ping the CO/ browse the WEB. 2-71 User Manual SmartAX MT810 ADSL CPE Chapter 2 Installation and Configure 2) Bridge mode using DHCP: z Change the directory to /usr/ADI_USB/ADI_LINUX. z Edit ifcfgeth and set the following: DEVICE = ADIModem BOOTPROTO = DHCP (GATEWAY = gateway IP address. NETMASK = 255.255.255.0 3) Run “./godhcp ADIModem”. 4) Run ifconfig again to confirm the IP Address assignment. 5) Ping the CO/ browse the WEB. Note: You need to run one of the above scripts (gostatic or godhcp) whenever you unplug/plug- in the USB cable. 2.4.2 Routed Mode configuration Follow these steps to configure static IP Address in routed mode: 1) Run “ifconfig –a”. Make sure the ADIModem interface is reported by ifconfig. 2) Edit /etc/analog/adiusbadsl.conf. z Set VPI and VCI. Values are in HEX; defaults are 00000000 and 00000020 respectively. (Note: do not use 0x in front of the numbers) 2-72 User Manual SmartAX MT810 ADSL CPE z Chapter 2 Installation and Configure Set Encapsulation to 3 (for routed LLC) or 4 (for routed VC). z Set LineType to 10 (this will use the default CMV file). 3) Change the directory to /usr/ADI_USB/ADI_LINUX. 4) Run “ifconfig –a”. Make sure the ADIModem interface is reported by ifconfig. 5) Run “./gostatic ADIModem ip-address subnet-mask”. 6) Run ifconfig again to confirm the IP Address assignment. 7) Edit “resolv.conf” in /etc/ directory; add your DNS [nameserver 64.5.221.13]. 8) Add the default gateway (such as 192.168.50.100) to the routing table. 9) Now you are ready to browse the WEB. 2.4.3 PPPoX configuration The main alternative to the bridge mode/DHCP explained above is PPPoX, which is one of the PPPoE (PPP over Ethernet) or PPPoA (PPP over ATM designed specifically for DSL). PPPoX is similar to the old dial-up method. A routable IP-address is returned after center office (CO) authentication. User needs to have a user name and password. (Note that no actual dialing takes place.) I. PPPoE configuration Follow these steps to configure the modem: 1) Install the LAN driver (refer to the bridge mode configuration) Make sure Encapsulation in “/etc/analog/adiusbadsl.conf ” is set to 1(Bridge LLC) or 2(Bridge VC). 2-73 User Manual SmartAX MT810 ADSL CPE 2) Chapter 2 Installation and Configure Locate the directory to /mnt/cdrom/Drivers/Linux/ADI_PPPOE. 3) Run “rpm –Uvh PPPOE_351.rpm”(if you use Redhat9.0 or above, you can skip it.) 4) Run “adsl-setup”, and go to the properties and setup the following: z Enter your PPPoE username: For example, [[email protected]] z Default eth0: ADIMODEM z Enter the demand value(default no) (can be blank) z Enter the DNS information here: server z Enter your PPPoE password: XXX z Re-enter your PPPoE password: XXX z Choose a type of firewall(0-2): 0 z Accept those settings and adjust configuration files (y/n)?: Y 5) Now you are ready to dial and get connected. z Run “adsl-start”. z When the message “…connected” appears, it indicates the connection is built successfully. z Run “adsl-status” to check the ADSL status. 6) Run the command “adsl-stop” to disconnect form the server. 2-74 User Manual SmartAX MT810 ADSL CPE Chapter 2 Installation and Configure Note: If you using mandrake 9.0 you might get a message saying “Error Starting connection: /usr/sbin/adsl-start line 1:/usr/bin/id: No such file or directory adsl-start you must be root to run this script”. In this case, copy the ‘id’ file from ‘/bin/ to /usr/bin/’ (For example, “cp /bin/id /usr/bin/”). II. PPPoA configuration The PPPoA driver should be installed after LAN driver installation. Follow the steps below to configure the modem for PPPoA: 1) Install the LAN Driver (don’t plug in modem). 2) Install PPPoA driver. The installation package can be found under “…/ADI_PPPOA”, which also includes the installation script “PPP_INSTALL”. To execute the script run “./PPP_INSTALL /pppoa-installation-directory” (don’t plug in the modem). 3) Change the driver encapsulation to PPPoA(VC). Edit z “usr/ADI_USB/ADI_LINUX/ADI_SRC/OTHER/” “adiusbadsl.conf” in two locations: and “/etc/analog”. z Set Encapsulation to 6 (for PPPOA_VC). 4) Set the User and Password. Modify the following files with the provided username and password: z “options”(This file will contain your user) z “pap-secrets”(This file will password) 2-75 contain your user and User Manual SmartAX MT810 ADSL CPE Chapter 2 Installation and Configure z “chap-secerts” (This file will contain your user password) 5) The above files can be found in the following locations (make sure to modify the files in both locations: unplug and plug in the modem) z “/etc/ppp/” z “usr/ADI_USB/ADI_PPPOA/PPP_CONF” 6) Execute “ADI_PPP_Go” to connect/dial to the server. The script can be found in “usr/ADI_USB/ADI_PPPOA/PPP_SCRIPTS”. While you are connected, a virtual interface (ppp0) will be created. This interface will contain your IP address. Note: To disconnect from the server, run the “ADI_PPP_Stop” script. It can be found in the same directory. 2.5 Software Uninstallation 1) Change the directory to /mnt/cdrom/Drivers/Linux/ADI_DRIVER 2) Run “Uninstall” file. 3) Confirm that the file: /usr/ADI_USB/ADI_LINUX, or /etc/analog have been deleted. 2-76 User Manual SmartAX MT810 ADSL CPE Chapter 3 Questions & Answers Chapter 3 Questions & Answers Question 1: When connecting to Wide Area Network (WAN), the message appears that PVC connections failed, why? Answer: 1) Check the connections between ADSL modem and telephone line. 2) If you ensure the connection has no problem, proceed to check the VPI and VCI Parameters. Change these settings if they are inconsistent with the information your DSL service provider provides. Question2: Compare with using ADSL modem independently, why I have slower speed while using modem and phone at same time? Answer: To separate the data signal and voice analog signal, a splitter is necessary. It has three ports: PHONE, LINE, MODEM. Make sure the connection is correct. Question 3: Why sometimes the access speed is not faster than dial-up modem? Answer: There are several reasons: 1) If you visit in oversea website, your speed will be limited by the export bandwidth and the configurations on the server side. 2) ADSL modem is multimode, that is, it automatically determines the type of modem at the central office and configures itself accordingly. Once the correct mode is 3-1 User Manual SmartAX MT810 ADSL CPE Chapter 3 Questions & Answers determined, the modem automatically determines the optimal data rate for the line. It depends on the type of modem at the central office and the loop condition. Question 4: Why browsing web page is slow after ADSL and Enternet300 have been installed? (Only for Windows OS) Answer: This is because Internet connection wizard points to a wrong connection. Enternet300 uses Local Area Network virtual dial-up, but the IE default is using normal dial-up when browsing a web site. IE will seek the dial-up interface first, and then seek proxy in Local Area Network (LAN). Lastly point to Enternet300 interface, which would make it slow. You need to run the Internet connect wizard to point to LAN mode and disable the proxy so as to solve the problem. 3-2
