Fulforth Jubilee Park
Fulforth Jubilee Park is to see yet more development!
Sacriston Parish Council, and County Councillor’s Simon
Wilson and Heather Liddle via their Neighbourhood
Budget are jointly funding a £7,000 project to install two
concrete table tennis tables, and three picnic tables
in the park. These should be in
place for the summer.
“Many thanks to the staff and volunteers from the Fulforth
Centre who made our Golden Wedding celebration on
29th March, such a memorable event.
I would urge people to make use of these wonderful
facilities which have been made available for our use.
The catering arrangement and management of drinks
could not be faulted.
The décor by Event Diva added tremendous style and
gave the hall an appropriate ambience. Arrangements
for all aspects of this event, including the celebratory
cake and suitable disco music were made by the centre
staff and volunteers.
We have an excellent facility here. Call in for a morning
coffee and see for yourself.”

Fulforth Walk
Sacriston Development Group
have undertaken works to try
and encourage use of Fulforth
Dene. The Dene is a beautiful
historic woodland, as was
originally brought into use as
a public amenity by the Miners
Welfare. Phases 1 and 2 are now
complete, and include new tree
and shrub lined access from the welfare park, markers
around the circular route, signage, as well practical
works such as resurfacing and drainage, new kissing
gates and the relaying of a hawthorn hedge. They
hope to undertake further phases of work looking at the
entrance to the welfare park itself, the pond area, areas
relating to the pits, and the importance of the bluebells
in the future phases.
Put this date in your diary and gather together for a Sacriston community day of activities, memories and
fun! There will be fancy dress and photography competitions, a traditional Sports Day and Simply Sport
will organise a local football tournament.
Enjoy a musical extravaganza featuring performances from “Jazz in My Pants” and Spennymoor Junior
Town Band as well as a host of local schools, groups and churches, including excerpts from The Durham
Federation’s “High School Musical.” We will also see the return of Stuart Wright’s fairground organ which
proved so popular last year.
Friday 25th April – Bingo & games Night
Saturday 24th May- St Cuthbert’s Hospice Fundraiser
Friday 27th June – Psychic Night
There will be exhibitions on “Our Local Heroes,” “How We Lived” and “Women’s Roles” and we will look

FLY-TIPPING
Fly-tipping is an issue that blights many areas of County Durham, but
is especially noticeable in rural communities and villages, where it has
an even more detrimental impact on the local amenity and landscape.
Durham County Council take all incidents of Fly-tipping seriously,
and Neighbourhood Wardens will investigate and seek to prosecute
anyone identified as being responsible.
We would call upon the local community to assist in reducing incidents
of fly-tipping, by being observant to any suspect vehicles or persons,
especially in places such as farm tracks or woodland car parks, or
remote locations. If you see any vehicle or person fly-tipping, or suspect
this may be about to take place, please ring either the Police or Council
at the time the incident is occurring.
If you discover any fly-tipping already deposited, please report it to the
Council so that Wardens can investigate. Fly-tipping is a serious issue
that greatly detracts from the pleasantness of the local area, can lead
to other problems such as vermin infestation, or encourage further flytipping itself, and is hugely costly to the Council to deal with. Please
can we ask the local community to be observant to any potential Flytipping, and report any suspicious activity.
Additionally, if you are approached by anyone offering to remove any waste from your yard or garden, please ensure you check
they have a Waste Carrier’s Licence, which is a legal requirement to remove waste, and additionally ask for receipts for anything
taken – legitimate scrap dealers should hold this permit and provide receipts. Otherwise residents themselves can be held liable
for any items later found fly-tipped, as we each have a legal Duty of Care to ensure our waste and rubbish is properly removed
by appropriately licenced scrap-dealers. In doing this, together we can work to make County Durham, and the Sacriston area in
particular, a Better place to live, work, and visit.
You can report fly tippingor any suspicious activity in confidence to your local Councillors for Sacriston, Heather
Liddle 03000 268738 and Simon Wilson 03000 268 792
St Bede’s Primary School
We thought things here at St Bede’s Primary School might have quietened
down in 2014 following a very busy festive time packed with Christmas
Productions, Carol Concerts, Christmas Lunches, Fayres, Pantomimes
and of course Santa Visits. We were wrong though and school life
continues be filled with visitors and trips...
Class 2 were ‘chuffed’ to visit the Head of Steam railway museum in Darlington to consider the life and work of George
Stephenson. They even tried to drive a train! Class 3 visited Fyndoune and took part in a range of sporting activities which
they thoroughly enjoyed. Travelling on the service bus year 5 visited St Leonard’s for a mini retreat looking at the lives of local
saints. As well as our school, our houses (or teams) are named after local saints: Bede, Cuthbert, Hild and Aidan. The day
allowed the children to research their saint in more detail and come back to share this during a liturgy within their own house.
At the end of January we were also fortunate enough to be visited by Vision Skills North East. Paul, Louise, John and guide
dog Daisy brought a variety of items that visually impaired people use to help them carry out every day tasks. We learned lots
of things - from how to move out of the way of people using a cane to how difficult it is to fill a cup with water when you can’t
see the cup, the water or the jug! We were all very impressed that having a visual impairment does not stop people doing very
much at all!
It hasn’t been just the children kept busy either. Parents, parishioners, staff and children joined together for ‘Bede’s Big Quiz’
on a cold evening in February. Altogether there were 8 teams who tried to answer some pretty difficult questions from quiz
master Peter while raising funds for school. It’s a good job we had a break for pizza and bingo in the middle to recharge the
brain cells!
Throughout this our children have all been working hard in class. We are very proud that the hard work of the teachers and
children during PE has been recognised by the achievement of the Bronze Award for School Sport Participation in Games.
Well done everyone!
