Sandip Agarwalla, Ave. Chair TRF Support November 2012 “November is The Rotary Foundation Month” Different Strokes!! Dear Champions, October can easily be termed as the busiest month – about 20 OCVs and about 20 different appearances in seminars, ICFs, meetings etc. Many times, I was simply unable to comprehend whether it was a day event or a night event, whether I was going to an event or coming from an event, or whether I was going to my home to rest or whether I was leaving my home to go to the event early in the morning! Busy as a B, and what a Big B it was! But I enjoyed every minute of it! Meeting various Rotarians and making new friends, seeing new ideas in projects and seminars and getting surprised and happy – at the same time! What an application of four “M”s – Mind, Matter, Money and Men (and women)! This is the reason District 3140 is the best District in the World! Let me just name some of the events that I was part of! Service 12 project of cataract surgeries opening at TRIDENT, Youth Carnival by Mumbai South, Bombay Hills South's 20,000 Eye Examinations at Trombay and Deonar, Butterfly Nature Trail by Rotary and BNHS, New Generation Conference – Naya Zamana, an outstanding and never-before ICF (Mahaparivartan) on Service Projects by one of the most committed Rotarian Purushottam Agwan and led as usual by that great PDG Dr. Ulhas Kolhatkar, Inauguration of Cataract Surgeries at BHAKTIVEDANTA, two powerful ICFs on Vocational Service – a) North and Central at Amulakh High School (wonderfully led by PDG Madhukar Deodhar and Convenor Rajan Raghunath) and South and West (equally adeptly led by PDG Dr. Anupam Desai and Convenor Vivek Prabhu); RYPEN at Powai by Dist Secretary Gool, Values and Ethics Seminar (again adeptly led by PDG Dr. Madhukar Bhide and Convenor Virendra Widge), a “short notice” District Dandiya by “Rotawest” (Prez Bharat Dhruv, Mudrak and others), ICF on Club Administration (again led well by PDG Madhukar Deodhar and Convenor Prithpal Singh Bhatia) and, finally, on 31st October, a proud inauguration of “Unplugged” a path breaking VTT project led by that passionate and committed Rotarian Yogesh Zaveri and RC Mumbai Ghatkopar! What a breathless array of events! In between, there were two press conferences – one in Thane (organized by Prez Madhu) and one in Press Club at VT (organized by Padmakar); a very important meeting with PDG Arvind Phukan of WASRAG for that massive “Watershed Development Project” at Jawhar (if you were to be given details of the working of this project, I am sure you will be flabbergasted at the scope and 360 degrees planning – kudos to Purushottam Agwan and his team); start of our prestigious Maternal Mortality Reduction project at Mokhada through the first Medical Camp with the help of Govt of Maharashtra, RI District 3140, Indian Medical Association, Gynecological association, Pragati Pratishthan and Organization of Pharmaceutical Producers of India (Director Vivek Padgaonkar of OPPI – another meticulous individual and a great addition to the team) and a graceful function by RC Bombay West to felicitate Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia for “Living Legend Award”. We were honoured by the presence of RID Shekhar Mehta who inaugurated the first Pediatric Heart Surgery of a prestigious Service 12 project “Touching Little Hearts”. The kick-starting of “Global Thane Festival” – a humongous Service 12 project by ARCOT and by inaugurating “Prabhakarpant Panshikar Natyaspardha”, a Lavni competition (a folk dance) etc. added to a busy but a memorable month! A great moment was meeting another living legend Kapil Dev – the first “World Champion” for India who instilled pride in our heart! The evening with him in Delhi also saw “Bloomberg TV” taking our interviews which will be displayed as small bytes for a month, where Kapil extolled the virtues of Service 12, Rotary in Mumbai and appealed to the audience to support Pediatric Heart surgeries and cataract surgeries! What a proud experience, thanks to Rtn Suresh Babu! On top of that, we have now finalized the “First Ever” international picnic/tour to Vietnam in 3rd week of February! We are indeed passing through some exciting times – full of service and fellowship! Well, my cup of happiness has filled to the brim! Let me hope that your cup also will be filled likewise!! Jai Rotary! In fact, Jai Happy Rotary!! [e@. ueervee ueeskeÀjme Happy Diwali 11 November 2012 My Rotary Moment Our Club – RC of New Bombay Seaside, in the year 1995 adopted an adivasi hamlet of few huts on a hill top just 6 kms from Nerul Township, on the New Bombay-Uran road. This was on the request of the Cidco Social Service officer, Mrs Rema Dikshit, who informed us that this adivasi community have being living there for more than 2 decades in very poor conditions, in spite of huge townships coming up around them in New Bombay. We took care of them by regular medical checkups, clothing, hygiene, providing ration and celebrating diwali and other festivals with them. During monsoon when their huts would leak we provided them with tarpaulin. We organized ration cards for them, so as they can ration at cheap cost. Through some government scheme they were able to make their small houses. But there was no electricity, water, or education for the children. Over the years we could provide them with a common water tap and electricity to each hut. All this really improved their living conditions. But the most important of all – education, was not available to them. As these children would not be easily accepted in the local village Zilla Parishad School, our club started teaching classes for all children with the help of two social workers at their hamlet. After about 1 and 1/2 yrs, on requesting and following up with the school authorities, at our adopted vahal Zilla Parishad school, which was just about ½ km, we could get admission in the next academic year for most of these adivasi children. I very clearly remember their first day at school, 15th june 2002, when the first batch of children, in school uniforms with their school bags, walked to the school with their parents. This was the most memorable day in my life, as I had always dreamt and worked to get formal education for them at a regular school. Since then all children from this adivasi hamlet go to the school. This year, the first batch of 4 students would appear for 10th standard exams. - Rtn Anil Govindani. District Secretary 12-13. “November is The Rotary Foundation Month” November 2012 “PIECE of MIND” “Peace - A Choice” Since I have started writing about peace, I have started thinking about human nature. There are people like Mother Teresa and there are some like Saddam Hussein. Why such a difference? The only answer that comes to my mind is the choice one makes. Nature gives us ample opportunities, how we use them makes us good or bad human being. This is a true story told by a father during fund raising for physically and mentally handicapped children.” Shay, who was physically and mentally handicapped, once was walking in a park with his father. They walked past some boys whom Shay knew, were playing baseball. Shay asked, “Do you think they'll let me play?” Shay's father knew that most of the boys would not want someone like Shay on their team, but the father also understood that if his son were allowed to play, it would give him a much-needed sense of belonging and some confidence to be accepted by others in spite of his handicaps. Shay's father approached one of the boys on the field and asked (not expecting much) if Shay could play. The boy looked around for guidance and said, “We're losing by six runs and the game is in the eighth inning. I guess he can be on our team and we'll try to put him in to bat in the ninth inning.” Shay struggled over to the team's bench and, with a broad smile, put on a team shirt. His father watched with a small tear in his eye and warmth in his heart. The boys saw the father's joy at his son being accepted. In the bottom of the eighth inning, Shay's team scored a few runs but was still behind by three. In the top of the ninth inning, Shay put on a glove and played in the right field. Even though no hits came his way, he was obviously ecstatic just to be in the game and on the field, grinning from ear to ear as his father waved to him from the stands. In the bottom of the ninth inning, Shay's team scored again. Now, with two outs and the bases loaded, the potential winning run was on base and Shay was scheduled to be next at bat. At this juncture, do they let Shay bat and give away their chance to win the game? Surprisingly, Shay was given the bat. Everyone knew that a hit was all but impossible because Shay didn't even know how to hold the bat properly, much less connect with the ball. However, as Shay stepped up to the plate, the pitcher, recognizing that the other team was putting winning aside for this moment in Shay's life, moved in a few steps to lob the ball in softly so Shay could at least make contact. The first pitch came and Shay swung clumsily and missed. The pitcher again took a few steps forward to toss the ball softly towards Shay. As the pitch came in, Shay swung at the ball and hit a slow ground ball right back to the pitcher. The game would now be over. The pitcher picked up the soft grounder and could have easily thrown the ball to the first baseman. Shay would have been out and that would have been the end of the game. Instead, the pitcher threw the ball right over the first baseman's head, out of reach of all team mates. Everyone from the stands and both teams started yelling, “Shay, run to first! Run to first!” Never in his life had Shay ever run that far, but he made it to first base. He scampered down the baseline, wide-eyed and startled. Everyone yelled, “Run to second, run to second!” Catching his breath, Shay awkwardly ran towards second, gleaming and struggling to make it to the base. By the time Shay rounded towards second base, the right fielder had the ball, the smallest guy on their team who now had his first chance to be the hero for his team. He could have thrown the ball to the second-baseman for the tag, but he understood the pitcher's intentions so he, too, intentionally threw the ball high and far over the third-baseman's head. Shay ran towards third base deliriously as the runners ahead of him circled the bases toward home. All were screaming, “Shay, Shay, Shay, all the Way Shay” Shay reached third base because the opposing shortstop ran to help him by turning him in the direction of third base, and shouted, “Run to third! Shay, run to third!” As Shay rounded third, the boys from both teams, and the spectators, were on their feet screaming, “Shay, run home! Run home!” Shay ran to home, stepped on the plate, and was cheered as the hero who hit the grand slam and won the game for his team. “That day,” said the father softly with tears now rolling down his face, “the boys from both teams helped bring a piece of true love and humanity into this world.” Shay didn't make it to another summer. He died that winter, having never forgotten being the hero and making his father so happy, and coming home and seeing his mother tearfully embrace her little hero of the day! . “I believe that when a child like Shay, physically and mentally handicapped, comes into the world, an opportunity to realize true human nature presents itself, and it comes in the way other people treat that child.” We all have thousands of opportunities every single day to make a difference. So many seemingly trivial interactions between two people present us with a choice: Do we pass along a little spark of love and humanity or do we pass up those opportunities? Friends, every society is judged by how it treats its least fortunate.
