We also have a selection of items from more obscure sports treats for collectors of tiddlywinks, fen skating, stoolball and longball literature (c'mon we know you're out there). PATRICK DIVORTY ON FOOTBALL Subtitled "Being evidence given before the Royal Commissioin appointed to enquire into the value of Football as a factor making for International Peace and the Abolition of Armaments". Divorty was an Irish Glaswegian comic and, in this rare little book, he communicates his views on football. The book was published by the G & J. MacLachlan and the book also served as a promotional tool for their drinks business. Contains ten very nice colour lithograph illustrations. Paperback. 8vo. 49pp. Small chips to paper wrapper. Bookplate to inside of front cover and from the collection of Robin Marlar (Sussex cricketer), with his small bookplate slipped in. Very scarce. Date 1959 £100.00 37233 COPA DO MUNDO 1950 World Cup tournament brochure, in Spanish, issued by Esso. It is regarded as the main publication, as there was no official guide produced. Paperback. 17.5 x 12.5 cm. 44pp. Pictorial covers, with extensive light foxing. Further foxing to some internal pages. Generally a very good copy of a rare brochure. Date Publisher Author 1950 Esso (STANDARD OIL COMPANY OF BRAZIL) £1,200.00 36155 HENRY BLOFELD SCORES A CENTURY AT LORD'S, AGED 16 - COMBINED SERVICES V PUBLIC SCHOOLS 1956 CRICKET SCORECARD Official scorecard for the match played at Lord's on August 8-9, 1956. Blofeld came in at number 8 and scored 104 out of a total of 214 against some experienced bowlers, including Leary, Shirreff and Subba Row. An impressive performance, albeit in a losing cause. Part-printed. Blofeld's score has been written in ink. Very good. Date 1956 £38.00 37340 THE "SPORTING" ENGLISH? A COMMENTARY BY "MAN IN THE STREET" An Australian rant against the perceived unsportsmanlike behaviour of Jardine's Bodyline team in the infamous 1932-33 Ashes series. The author, thought to be W.R. Staton, rants unrelentingly, believing that "Australia has always been the target for criticism - very often unjust criticism - from English visitors, big men and peering littlenesses alike". 8vo. 90pp. Pictorial boards, general spotting and boards a little warped. ARSENAL V WIGAN ATHLETIC 2006 (LAST GAME AT HIGHBURY) FOOTBALL PROGRAMME - LEATHERBOUND Limited edition matchday programme for Arsenal's last match at Highbury, against Wigan on May 7th, 2006. The programme is bound in red leather with all titles in gilt to front. All page edges are also gilt. Comes with a small poster of Highbury slipped in and a separate publication called "A-Z of Highbury", which was presented with the programme. The programme is signed to the front cover by Peter Hill-Wood, Chairman of the club, and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity (#868), which is also signed by Hill-Wood. Fine condition. Date Publisher Author £200.00 36385 1958 New York: Vantage Press Irene WARD NORSEN AUSTRALIA 1930 - ENTERTAINMENT ABOARD SS "ORFORD" Programme for the Orford Racing Club's Indian Ocean Meeting held on board the Orient Line's SS "Orford" on March 28 1930 and attended by the Australian cricketers who were travelling to England. Ten players are listed as race stewards on the front cover, including Bradman, while Vic Richardson and Ted a'Beckett are down as owner's of horses running in the fifth race. A most unusual and charming item from the Australian tour of UK in 1930. 16.5 x 10cm. Single folding card. The race winners have been written in in pencil on the back of the card. Very good. His experiences of golf in the year 2000 include driverless golf carts, watching the game by using a series of giant mirrors suspended around the course and clubs that automatically keep the player's score. Date 1908 £220.00 36165 ROCHDALE V NORWICH CITY 1962 (LEAGUE CUP FINAL, 1ST LEG) FOOTBALL PROGRAMME Official programme for the first leg of the 1961-62 League Cup Final between Rochdale and Norwich City, played at Spotland on April 26th, 1962. Norwich won the match 3-0 and secured the trophy in the second leg a few days later. 14 x 10.5cm. Very good condition. This is one of the most sought-after post-war football programmes. Date 1962 £1,150.00 37115 LANCASHIRE V LEICESTERSHIRE 1963 CRICKET SCORECARD (FIRST EVER "LIST A" CRICKET MATCH AND FIRST IN GILLETTE CUP) Official scorecard for the match played at Old Trafford on May 1st, 1963. This was the first ever match in the Gillette Cup, being a preliminary round match, won comfortably by Lancashire. It was also the very first "List A" cricket match. Peter Marner was the first player to ever score a "List A" century and Brian Statham the first to take 5 wickets. An historic scorecard. Fully printed. Very good condition. Date 1963 £65.00 37337 CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY V BATH ROUND TABLE 1959 TIDDLYWINKS WORLD TITLE PROGRAMME Programme for that never-to-be-forgotten match at The Regency Ballroom Bath, 19th June 1959, the elimination match for the Tiddlywinks world title. 4pp. A few folds and creases but a fantastically rare item from the golden age of British tiddlywinks! Date 1959 £24.00 50209 CHAPMAN & LARWOOD (ENGLAND) 1928 - GOING OUT TO BAT AT SYDNEY Original b/w Press photo of APF Chapman (20) and H Larwood (43) walking out to continue piling up runs after Hammond's mighty 251 in England's then world record total of 636 against Australia at Sydney in the Second Test, Dec 14-20, 1928. England won by 8 wickets as captain Chapman retained the Ashes decisively 4-1. Larwood took 18 wickets in the series, a precursor to his destructive (and controversial) 33 wickets in 1932/33. 26 x 20.5cm. White borders. Light creasing to edges. Press and ink markings to reverse. Good. Date 1928 £325.00 2261 WALES V FRANCE 1968 SIGNED DINNER MENU (FIRST FRENCH GRAND SLAM) Menu card, in the shape of a rugby ball, for a dinner held in honour of the French rugby team after the match played on March 23rd, 1968. France won the match 149, to secure their first ever Grand Slam. Signed on the back cover and inside by at least 33 players and guests. These include Welsh players Gerald Davies, Bennett, Dawes, Taylor, O'Shea, Lloyd, Gray, Richards, Rees, John, Raybould, Morris, Thomas, Jones, Baxter and Grahame Hodgson. Also signed by Dave Nash (coach), Alun Thomas and Cliff Jones. French autographs include Campaes, Claude Dourthe and Jean Prat (coach). There are many unidentified autographs, some of which are undoubtedly of the French team. The card has a couple of grubby marks, but is generally in very good condition. Date 1968 £160.00 37222 THE STANDARD STOOLBALL RULES C. 1920 Small booklet containing the rules of Stoolball, as proposed and passed at a meeting held at Glynde by a committee representing the Stoolball Clubs in the County of Sussex. All committee members are listed. Published by Lloyd & Son of Lewes, a general sports outfitters who were best known as gun manufacturers. 12 x 8cm. Paperback. These rules have been drawn up by the Birmingham Gymnasts Club. There is no date given but it would seem to be from the 1940s or early 1950s. Paperback. 11 x 7cm. 8pp. Owner's name to front cover. Date 1890s £28.00 36718 NOTTINGHAM FOREST 1977-78 (CHAMPIONSHIP SEASON) BOUND SET OF PROGRAMMES - MULTI-SIGNED A bound set of programmes for all Nottingham Forest home matches in the League, FA Cup and League Cup in 1977-78. Forest, under Brian Clough, confounded all the critics to win the League Championship and the League Cup just a year after being promoted. Also included is the Forest Year Book for 1977-78, the final of the Notts. F.A. County Cup (against Notts County) and the Brian Clough and Peter Taylor Testimonial match against Derby County. The programmes are extensively signed throughout, always neatly in ink and across pen or photographic portraits. Autographs include Clough (twice), Robertson (x6), Bowyer (x2), Lloyd (x3), Woodcock (x3), Elliott (x3), Anderson (x3), Birtles (x2), Shilton (x3), Gemmill (x3), Needham (x4), Burns (x4), Woods (x5), O'Hare (x3), Barrett (x4), Clark (x2), McGovern (x2), O'Neill (x4), Sutton, Burke, Haslegrave, Peter Taylor, Jimmy Gordon (x5) and O'Kane (x2),. The programmes are bound in red cloth boards with gilt titles to spine. There is some wear to the covers, especially to the head and tail of spine. All programmes are in very good condition. Date 1948 £635.00 2325 MODERN RUGBY FOOTBALL - NEW ZEALAND METHODS An instructional for the beginner, player and spectator. Baskerville was a Rugby Union player before organising the ground-breaking Rugby League tour to Great Britain in 1907-08, which continued in Australia. Baskerville died from pneumonia while in Australia in 1908. 8vo. 128pp. Illustrated red boards, rubbed to head of spne and a little faded to edges. Previous owner's name to front endpaper. The author was a former Irish international who also played for Blackheath and the Barbarians. First edition. Small 8vo. 135pp. Frontispiece of Dan Drysdale, the famous Scottish full-back + 5 plates. Original blue boards, in very good condition. This copy belonged to the author and has been used by him to make notes for the second edition. Ink amendments have been made in particular to the title-page and introduction, which the author has initialled. There are a few pencil annotations later in the book, but it is largely untouched. Signed to the front pastedown by 12 Yorkshire players from 1935, signed to the front endpaper by 11 Kent players from the same season, and signed to the centre team photograph by the full Lancashire team from 1934 (County Champions). The Yorkshire autographs include Sellers, Sutcliffe, Leyland, Verity, Wood, Hutton, Macaulay, Fisher, Smailes, Barber, Mitchell and Bowes. Kent include Woolley, Chapman, Todd, Freeman, Fagg, Ames, Wright, Lewis, Valentine, Hamilton and Watt. The Lancashire team was Washbrook, Hopwood, Iddon, Booth, Pollard, Parkinson, Oldfield, Paynter, Tyldesley, Eckersley, Lister and Duckworth. Walter Hagen was the winner. This programme was for the Thursday (May 9th). Contains the Official Programme Pairings for the final 2 rounds played on Friday 10th May. Programme - covers lightly rubbed and a little grubby. Staples rusting. Very good. Pairings sheet - single folded sheet with results from the first two rounds and final pairings printed and the scores and total from the last two rounds added neatly in pencil. Some closed tears and foxing, but still good. Date 1929 £1,200.00 36473 THE EVOLUTION OF TRACK AND FIELD PERFORMANCES THROUGHOUT THE WORLD (1924-1960) A remarkable statistical work which includes the progressive records of all the major Athletic disciplines (track and field) in over 40 countries from 1924 to 1960. For example, I now know that in 1935 Mr. Calistrat extended the Romanian triple-jump record to 13.66m. He continued to improve on this year-on-year until the late 1940s. English language. Date Publisher Author £70.00 36779 1960 Rome: "La Fiaccola" Luigi MENGONI (compiler) BARBARIANS V NEW ZEALAND 1973 (THE FAMOUS MATCH) Official programme for the match at Cardiff Arms Park, 27th January 1973. This was Image the most famous of all Barbarians games against the touring sides. In what was seen as a rematch between the All Blacks and the 1971 British Lions, Gareth Edwards scored one of the most famous tries of all time in the first few minutes of the game. The rest of the game lived up to the start and it was crowned by an equally brilliant try from J.P.R. Williams in the second half. Barbarians won a famous victory 23-11. A very good copy. The last chapter covers the Company of Golfers (founded 1754) and the famous course at St Andrews, also the construction of golf balls, for which St Andrews was a pioneering centre. The first edition was published in 1807 by Peter Hill of Edinburgh. Third edition, revised. Small 8vo. xii + pp264 + [4] 3 plates. Rebound in brown boards with gilt title to spine and new endpapers. James GRIERSON £450.00 36456 ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL One of the very earliest books on Association Football. It is essentially an instructional book, with notes on how to play the game , positions and the rules of the game. Goodall played, most notably, for Preston North End, Derby County and England. He was also Watford's first manager and a first-class cricketer for Derbyshire. This book was first published in 1898 - this a second impression fom 1902. Small 8vo. 108pp + adverts. Kenneth Hunt played for Wolverhampton Wanderers, scoring in the 1908 FA Cup Final and played twice for England.
