The purpose of the evaluation was to determine if the DVM program of USM complied with the requirements as per CHED Memorandum Order No. 15, s. 2007. The committee was composed of Dr Romeo S Gundran, member of the Technical Committee for Veterinary Medicine, who also served as the chairperson of the evaluators; Dr Ma Elizabeth D Callanta, member of the PRC Board of Veterinary Medicine; Ms Joycelyn D Canato of the Office of Programs and Standards of CHED, Diliman, Quezon City; and Ms Teresita B Español of CHED Region XII. The areas that were evaluated consisted of the following: program administration, faculty, curriculum, library, facilities and equipment, admission and retention, and research and extension. Generally, the College of Veterinary Medicine got a compliance rating of 91.13%, which was much higher than the result of the last evaluation. The evaluators were impressed of what the College had shown them during the ocular inspection and by the evaluation result. However, there were areas which the program partially complied with, such as: curriculum, library, facilities and equipment and research. Consequently, the team strongly recommended immediate attention to, and action on, the deficiencies on those areas. Specifically, the team recommended the following: forging of international linkages through research collaborations, hiring of one additional licensed DVM faculty to satisfy the required number of full-time faculty, decreasing the number of units of some professional courses, acquisition of additional books, active subscription to online journals, operationalizing the x-ray facilities and establishing a large animal surgery room. The team reiterated that complete compliance to the requirements of the said CHED Memorandum Order is mandatory, and that higher education institutions are given a two-year non-extendable period to comply. ecmolina The evaluators (L-R): Drs Gundran, The evaluators with DR EC Molina and Callanta, Mss Canato, and Español. The visit was made possible through the partnership between the World Cocoa Foundation (WCF) and the USDA, Cocoa Borlaug Fellows Program. His visit was aimed to assist Ms Castillo in planning and developing her ongoing research project on cocoa pod borer and in improving the quality of mass-reared cacao pod borer moths on artificial diet for the Integrated Pest Management of cacao in the Philippines. Several trials were conducted to further improve the research on cocoa pod borer, for a greater chance of success, and eventually, attain a 99.9% eggs adult yield. During his visit, Dr Carpenter met with the USM President, Dr Jesus Antonio G Derije, and the three Vice Presidents, Deans and Directors of the University during his courtesy call at the USM Administration building. Together with the other Cocoa Borlaug Fellows, he also delivered a lecture to the researchers and students of the College of Agriculture of USM. This rare opportunity gave the faculty, researchers and students the opportunity to be updated on researches on cacao and gain new knowledge from other researches conducted by world renowned scientists from other countries. Also, he visited some cacao research sites such as the Cocoa Hybrid Trial under the leadership of Dr Romulo L Cena, where hybrids came from Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, and Indonesia. The trial was part of the on-going project funded by WCF in coordination with Dr Smilja Lambert, manager for sustainable agriculture of Mars Incorporated. Dr Carpenter’s travel in the Philippines included a visit to the Bureau of Agricultural Research (BAR) 7th Agri and Fisheries Techno Forum and Exhibit at Mega Trade Hall 2, SM Mega Mall, Mandaluyong City on August 12, 2011. The exhibit was participated in by different agencies and bureaus, regional field units, and research centers of the Department of Agriculture (DA), the state universities and colleges (SUCs), non-government organizations (NGOs), and the private sector. Moreover, he had the chance to meet Dr Divina M. Amalin, a Balik Scientist Program (BSP) awardee of Dept. of Science Technology, assigned in CocoaPhil. They met before at Homestead, Florida. He also met Ms Digna Sandoval, the focal person for cacao and coffee of the Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Agricultural Research. Towards the end of the visit, he toured around Mars Cocoa Development Center (MCDC) and Golden Sunset Farm (GSF) in Brgy. Malagos, Baguio District in Davao City. The manager, Mr Peter V Cruz, briefed him on the MCDC, and on sustainable agricultural practices for production, efficient and effective post harvest processing methods to consistently produce high quality beans and demonstrated successful cacao marketing for cocoa beans that met the national quality standards. He also visited the large scale post harvest facilities of Mrs Charita Puentespina, GSF proprietor, who shared with him her story on how she got hook into cacao and her recently concluded export market relationship with Armajaro. Dr Carpenter’s last visit was at the Cacao Agri-business Zone Center, one of the centers that the CocoaPhil established under the Cacao Agri-business Zones Development Project funded by the Department of Agriculture-High Value Commercial Crops Program in 2010. The Center, located at Talandang, Tugbok, Davao City showcased its facilities, among which were: the 24tons capacity fermentation boxes, sets of solar dryers and hybrid (artificial and solar) dryers, a central nursery, budwood garden, and a training hall. The center provides farmers access to sustainable cacao production technologies and programs, ready market, and information about domestic and global cacao industry trade and development. During the visit, Dr Carpenter had a taste of Filipino frothy hot chocolate drink made from tablea, a cacao by-product. Meanwhile, Ms Rhodina C Castillo, was elated by the visit of her mentor. USMARC: Going organic on vegetable production AD Calvo & NE Olero The demand for organically grown products is increasing all over the country due to the growing concern for food safety and environmental pollution. Another concern is farm pollution brought about by the massive use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides which contaminate our soil and water resources. This further leads to two equally important concerns: the issue of unsafe water and unsafe farm products. Hence, there is a need for an alternative system to produce safe and healthy food for the households. It is for this reason that USMARC researchers undertook various research studies on organic vegetable production. • Successive cropping of pechay grown in pots with vermicompost and ordinary garden soil as medium in different combinations. Results of the study showed that a combination of 4:1 ratio was considered best ratio of vermicompost and ordinary garden soil. This favored the growth and development of pechay and gave higher income of PhP584.05/treatment and high return on investment (2.81%). • Growth and yield of cabbage (KK cross) grown in different organic fertilizer under protective system Cabbage grown in a medium of 75% vermicompost and 25% ordinary garden soil (55 days after transplanting). Cabbage grown in a medium of 75% GIDI and 25% ordinary garden soil (55 days after transplanting). Growth of pechay using 8 kg vermicompost + 2 kg ordinary garden soil (4:1) as medium. • Yield of Yard Bean (var. ‘Pag-Asa’) as influenced by different levels of GIDI organic fertilizer String beans applied with GIDI organic fertilizer at the rate of 400 g/hill gave an average yield of 286.27/ plant. • Growth and yield of hot pepper as influenced by different organic fertilizers. Cabbage grown in a medium of 75% guano and 25% ordinary garden soil (55 days after transplanting). Cabbage grown in a medium of 50% carabao manure and 50% pure ordinary garden soil (55 days after transplanting). Cabbage grown in pure ordinary garden soil as control (55 days after transplanting). Hot pepper applied with vermicompost at the rate of 300 g/hill gave an average yield of 269.12 g/plant (1st cropping). Results of the various studies conducted imply that organic production of vegetables is very feasible not to mention the health benefits it can provide to the consumers, therefore, it can provide healthy food for the household.
