G Hondrade, program coordinator of Pagkain Para sa Masa: A
Self-help Household Food Security Program for the Upland and
Internally Displaced Communities in Mindanao and his better half,
Dr Rosa Fe D Hondrade. He also commended the performance of
research for having sourced out external funding support in the
amount of 28 million, which put USM second to UP in terms of
research grants received from external sources.
On resource generation, Pres Derije stressed the need to
strengthen the expansion of oil palm and rubber, particularly in
the main campus, at USM-KCC, USM Buluan Extension Campuses,
and in Malibatuan, Arakan area, to ensure that in the next years
to come, there would be no more tuition fee increase. He also
challenged the production team to set a common direction
towards increasing the income generating projects by planting
all idle areas with vegetables or any other suitable crops.
The other developments he cited were: the completion of the
unfinished auditorium, ICTC Building, and the 2nd and 3rd floors
for Café Martina; and the plan to establish a Student Multipurpose
Building (SMB) as well as the renovation of old building and
construction of new ones to address the need for more classroom
at USM-KCC and USM Buluan Extension Campuses.
Pres Derije humbly admitted that it is not easy to become
president. He recognized and took criticisms as challenges to
uplift the University.
More specifically, Pres Derije shed light on the criticisms and
feedbacks he received on the issue of cutting trees. He explained
that there was the need of cutting those trees for the safety of
students, faculty, and staff in times of bad weather condition, and
for the prevention of hazardous incidents and protection of the
electrical lines. This 1st semester, Pres Derije instructed to replant
new hardwood, rubber, and oil palm trees.
He likewise set the policy “no bottled” water around the
campus in support of the Clean Air Act and Climate Change. He
also promoted USM as a gold and green University. Furthermore,
he set a directive that two-stroke motorcycles shall not be
allowed to enter in the campus as well as the observance of the
no smoking policy within the University premises.
The President also thanked the University Security Forces
for having achieved zero crime rate in the campus, which could
be partially attributed to the good lighting system in both nonacademic and academic areas.
In closing, Pres Derije thanked God/Allah for giving him
strength and inspiration to continue serving the University as
President. He thanked the senior faculty and staff for the wisdom
and for sharing the same purpose of providing quality education,
of implementing relevant R&E, optimizing resources and
generating more income to the university. Inspired to plant a seed
and set a common purpose to follow the vision and mission of the
great founder, Bai Hadja Matabay Plang, he advocated, “Help the
President-Help USM”. mrt

Foundation Anniversary of the Cotabato Province.
This was held at the Pavilion, Provincial Capitol
Compound, Amas, Kidapawan City. One of the
new exciting and more gainful highlights of the
celebration was the week-long “Market Market sa
Kapitolyo” (MMK), which showcased the different
agri-based industries in the Province. This was
participated in by the Micro, Small and Medium
Enterprises dubbed as “MSME Specials”. The activity
was coordinated by the Provincial Government
of Cotabato in partnership with the Department
of Trade and Industry (DTI) and Metro Kidapawan
Chamber of Commerce and Industry Foundation Inc.
(MKCCIFI), which provided the avenue to promote
agri-tourism and new market for producers as well
as to meet and do business with buyers. The MSME

USM DVM program fares well
in the TPAE evaluation
The Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program of the University was evaluated
on 25-26 August 2011 by the Technical Panel for Agriculture Education (TPAE)Veterinary Medicine. The purpose of the evaluation was to determine if the DVM
program of USM complied with the requirements as per CHED Memorandum
Order No. 15, s. 2007. The committee was composed of Dr Romeo S Gundran,
member of the Technical Committee for Veterinary Medicine, who also served
as the chairperson of the evaluators; Dr Ma Elizabeth D Callanta, member of
the PRC Board of Veterinary Medicine; Ms Joycelyn D Canato of the Office of
Programs and Standards of CHED, Diliman, Quezon City; and Ms Teresita B
Español of CHED Region XII.
The areas that were evaluated consisted of the following: program
administration, faculty, curriculum, library, facilities and equipment, admission
and retention, and research and extension. Generally, the College of Veterinary
Medicine got a compliance rating of 91.13%, which was much higher than the
result of the last evaluation. The evaluators were impressed of what the College
had shown them during the ocular inspection and by the evaluation result.
However, there were areas which the program partially complied with, such
as: curriculum, library, facilities and equipment and research. Consequently,
the team strongly recommended immediate attention to, and action on,
the deficiencies on those areas. Specifically, the team recommended the
following: forging of international linkages through research collaborations,
hiring of one additional licensed DVM faculty to satisfy the required number
of full-time faculty, decreasing the number of units of some professional
courses, acquisition of additional books, active subscription to online journals,
operationalizing the x-ray facilities and establishing a large animal surgery
room.
The team reiterated that complete compliance to the requirements of
the said CHED Memorandum Order is mandatory, and that higher education
institutions are given a two-year non-extendable period to comply. ecmolina

USMARC: Going organic on vegetable production
AD Calvo & NE Olero
The demand for organically grown products is increasing all over the country due to the
growing concern for food safety and environmental pollution. Another concern is farm
pollution brought about by the massive use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides which
contaminate our soil and water resources. This further leads to two equally important
concerns: the issue of unsafe water and unsafe farm products. Hence, there is a need for
an alternative system to produce safe and healthy food for the households.
It is for this reason that USMARC researchers undertook various research studies on
organic vegetable production.
• Successive cropping of pechay grown in pots with vermicompost and ordinary garden
soil as medium in different combinations.
Results of the study showed that a combination of 4:1 ratio was considered best ratio
of vermicompost and ordinary garden soil. This favored the growth and development of
pechay and gave higher income of PhP584.05/treatment and high return on investment
(2.81%).
• Growth and yield of cabbage (KK cross) grown in different
organic fertilizer under protective system
Cabbage grown in a medium of
75%
vermicompost and
25%
ordinary garden soil (55 days after
transplanting).
Cabbage grown in a medium of
75% GIDI and 25% ordinary
garden soil (55 days after
transplanting).
Growth of pechay using 8 kg vermicompost + 2 kg
ordinary garden soil (4:1) as medium.
• Yield of Yard Bean (var. ‘Pag-Asa’) as influenced
by different levels of GIDI organic fertilizer
String beans applied
with GIDI organic
fertilizer at the rate
of 400 g/hill gave
an average yield of
286.27/ plant.
• Growth and yield of hot pepper as influenced
by different organic fertilizers.
Cabbage grown in a medium of 75%
guano and 25% ordinary garden soil
(55 days after transplanting).
Cabbage grown in a medium of
50% carabao manure and 50%
pure ordinary garden soil (55
days after transplanting).
Cabbage grown in pure ordinary garden soil
as control (55 days after transplanting).
Hot pepper applied
with vermicompost at
the rate of 300 g/hill
gave an average yield
of 269.12 g/plant (1st
cropping).
Results of the various studies conducted imply that organic
production of vegetables is very feasible not to mention the
health benefits it can provide to the consumers, therefore, it can
provide healthy food for the household.

retirees honored which included three (3) posthumous awards.
Director Lasaga congratulated the awardees and expressed
her great admiration for their productive years in the government
service, which were spent nurturing young minds and ensuring
their future. She added that entering the government service
and staying for more than half of their lives is not easy. Amidst
all difficulties, they still ramained to be true civil servants. “As
Public Servants our brand of power will be molded by what

is fair and just, and it will define us as the catalysts of change,”
she stressed. She added that public institutions, after all, can
be equated to a machine. Each part of a machine, no matter
how small, is important for it to function efficiently. The various
sectors of this University can very well represent the parts of the
machine, unless there is unity and commitment to the mission
and vision of this community, its progress will be snail-paced.
She closed her speech with this message: “Ang serbisyo sibil po
ay ating katuwang sa panahon ng paghamon, we shall then take
the challenge that public service requires, but more than that,
we shall give back the best service that the public deserves.”
