Corrections system. Statistics on individual facilities are located in Chapter 5. Additional
information on offenders in correctional facilities, under electronic monitoring, housed in
community residential centers (CRC) and those on probation and probation are located in
separate chapters.

Older
The median age of the offender population is 35.13 and the mean age is 37.87. Alaska’s 2010
median age reported by the US Census is 33.8. Over the last few years, the offender
population’s median and mean ages have increased. In 2011, the total offender population’s
median age was 34.88 and mean age was 37.12

This chapter provides summary demographic data on offenders housed in Alaska’s Institutional
facilities.

The State of Alaska operates 12 correctional institutes throughout the state. This chapter is a
snapshot of offenders incarcerated in Alaska and entered in the ACOMS database on June 30,
2014. Alaska’s institutions are diverse and hold convicted offenders, non-criminal mental health
holds, and individuals awaiting trial as well as a number of offenders held or convicted of
federal crimes.
This chapter includes general information across institutions.

to back to Alaska. However, there is still a small population held outside of Alaska in other
states or in federal institutions.

The mean age of offenders in institutions is 37.42. The median age is 34.53. The mean and
median ages have increased over the past four years. In 2011 the mean age of the institutional
population was 34.40 and the mean age was 36.72.

years. In 2011 the median age was 34.88 and the mean age was 36.35.
