Day 3 Auction Saloon Ephemera Saloon Ephemera Lot# 1926 CA , Auburn Auburn Brewing Group c1895 This lot included 3 documents and 1 post card. 1) Billhead from Roll, Kenison & Co. Manufactures of Soda, Seltzer Water, Sarsaparilla and Iron, Orange Cider, to W.A. Freman. It is dated February 1, 1893. The bill totals $14.25. 2) Another billhead Roll, Kenison & Co. to W.A. Freman. It is dated November 1, 1893 for a total of $41.25. 3) A.W. Kenison Co. Wholesale Liquor Dealers. This billhead is dated August 8, 1905 to a W. Freeman. The bill totals $12.85. 4) Lastly there is a post card that features a look down Broad Street looking east. The post card is dated May 17, 1913 from a Tom to a Mrs. Vanina in Sacramento. It measures 5.45” x 3.45.” This lot has some wear, including creases and tears. Est. $100 - 150 FHWAC # 10008 Lot# 1930 CA , Fresno Minnewawa Vineyard Letters 1896 Minnewawa Vineyard was owned for about 35 years by a Dr. Eshelman who also used the land for stockyard from 1890 to 1910. Contains 2 letters from 1896 discussing the topic of cattle, rather than wine. Est. $50 - 150 FHWAC # 209 Lot# 1931 CA , Trinidad Rocco Saloon Letterhead 1918 The Rocco Saloon was owned by Rocco Scapolla and A. Giannini in the seaside city of Trinidad. Great advertising postcard for Italian Swiss Colony. Postally unused. 2) Three RPPCs with three different views: World’s Largest Wine Vat, Vineyard and Winery, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church. Back has written text: “Graystone Winery St Helena Cal Dry Wine Cellar Napa Co.” 2) Great photo of two wine drinkers. Card has bends and soiling on reverse. Postally unused. Est. $70 - 150 FHWAC # 19029 Lot# 1934 CA , Nevada City Nevada City Soda Works Billhead Dated December 18, 1917, this billhead was for an order of some items from the Buffalo Brewing Co. Nevada County served as an agent for the Sacramento based distillery. The piece has little wear, but some creases. Est. $50 - 100 FHWAC # 220 Lot# 1935 CA , Sacramento Ruhstaller’s Gilt Edge Beer Group c1904 This is a lot of 2. Sacramento was for many the place to be for brewing lager at the turn of the 20th Century. The city was in the middle of a golden age of brewing, and businesses within the city supplied the west coast with brew. 1) Statement for balance due, no date. 2) Receipt of payment, dated October 17, 1904. Est. $50 - 150 FHWAC # 214 Lot# 1936 CA , Rancho Cucamonga Virginia Dare Winery Postcard For all the Virginia Dare bottle collectors out there, this is the perfect companion piece for your collection! A RPPC (c,1939-1950) exterior view of the Virginia Dare Winery in Rancho Cucamonga, CA. Postally unused. Originally known as Garrett & Company, the Virginia Dare Winery opened in the 1910s, was a shooting location for the TV show “Combat” in the 1960s, and now serves as an of�ice building complex. Est. $50 - 75 FHWAC # 19020 238 Lot# 1937 CA , Sonoma Korbel Postcard Group Lot of 5. 1) Four early postcards (c. 1905-1920) with three different views: Grape Arbor, Champagne Vaults (duplicate), and Bottling Process. One of the Champagne Vaults has been mailed (1915). All show wear (toning and soiling). 2) Chrome card showing two Korbel bottles on a table with dessert (?). Postally unused. Est. $70 - 150 FHWAC # 19032 Lot# 1938 NV Wine Documents Group This is lot of 2 great pieces perfect for any wine collector. 1) Wine list from the Depot Hotel of Reno, NV June 23, 1881. Dinners had a grand list of wine and liquors to choose from including G.H. Mumm’s Extra Dry, Chateau Larose, Zinfandel and Cogniac. The Depot Hotel was built in 1879 next to the Central Paci�ic rail lines and provided rooms and meals for travelers. 2) Letter about an order from the Houppert Wine Co. to Gold�ield, NV. The letter is dated April 17, 1915. Both items have some wear including creases. Front has drawing of plane �lying over vineyard at night with a spotlight for Gilt Edge Champagne. Card has been mailed. Back of card has some staining and bends. 2) Postcard for the packing house at Beverly Vineyard in Romulus, N.Y. Unused. Est. $75 - 150 FHWAC # 225 Lot# 1941 Jesse Moore Whiskies Letterhead 1897-1904 Lot of 2. 1) Letterhead from T.J.A. Flaw to the State Banks and Trust Co. in Carson City. The letter is dated April 9, 1904. T.J.A. Flaws was a well-known and respected business man during the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. Flaws was a distributor of Jess Moore Whiskies. 2) Billhead from Jesse Moore Hunt Co. Inc.. Moore was another proprietor of Jesse Moore Whiskies. This billhead is dated August 21, 1887 and was sent to an Arthur Crosby in San Rafael. Scharff Distilling 1913-1914 This a lot of 4 pieces, 2 from Rathjen Mercantile Co. and 2 from Scharff Distilling Co. 1) & 2) are small advertising cards from Rathjen Mercantile Co. they were importers of wine and liquor located in San Francisco at 3249 Filmore St. The 2 cards feature 2 young ladies with the months of June and April 1913 underneath. Both cards have little wear. 3) & 4) are billheads from the St. Louis based distillery L&A Scharff Distilling Co. Both billheads have some wear including stains and creases. All these particular cards show the display both with people and without, displaying the $1,000,000.00 in $10,000.00 bills inside the gold horseshoe. All are in excellent condition. This group has multiples of 3, for each of 3 different cards. All are in excellent condition. Est. $50 - 100 FHWAC # 1721 Lot# 1971 NV , Las Vegas Two Fremont Street post cards: One with Cancel 1) Fremont Street toward railroad depot with �ire in background. Cancelled Las Vegas. Ben can hardly wait to leave Vegas. 2) Fremont Street from Depot. Las Vegas Pharmacy printed photo by DeWitt. Est. $50 - 75 FHWAC # 2984 Lot# 1972 NV , Las Vegas Early Las Vegas Street Scenes c1930-1950 This is a lot of 5 RPCs featuring a look back at Fremont Street in the early 1950s. 1) Possibly the oldest post card in the group, it looks to be dated c1930 or earlier. Absent from this street scene are any advertisements of casinos or gaming. Instead, we see storefront signs for ice cream, Western Union, hardware and drug stores. The photograph was taken by Frasher’s Inc. in Pomona, CA. The focus is clear and contrast is medium. The post card has only a few marks, but in overall �ine condition. 2) &3) are views of looking west on Fremont Street. Several signs can be seen in these views including; S.S. Rex Club, Hotel Apache, Boulder Club and the Pioneer Club (long before Vegas Vic!). The post cards were produced by Frashers Fotos and sold by the Desert Souvenir Supply, in Boulder City. Both post cards have sharp focus and medium contrast, although one has slight fading. 4) Looking east on Fremont Street. Signs for the Overland Hotel, Monte Carlo and the Pioneer can be seen. It was produced by Frashers Fotos and has medium contrast and sharp focus. 5) Fremont Street looking west. Signs for businesses including Western Union, dentist and beauty parlors can be seen next to the Boulder Club. There is no photographer identi�ied. There is some wear on the post card, mostly on the bottom half. Est. $200 - 400 FHWAC # 147 Lot# 1973 NV , Las Vegas Early RPC’s of Fremont Street c1920-1930 This is a lot of 3 early real photo post cards of Fremont Street. The photographer is identi�ied as Oakes. Several of the signs of can be seen, including the Overland Hotel, the Sal Sagey Hotel, the Manhattan Café, the Boulder Club and the Apache Hotel. There is very little wear on each of the post cards. The focus is sharp and the contrast is medium. One chrome card of interior section with slot machines, a wheel of fortune, and Old West relics. unused. 2) El Rancho. One chrome card showing interior with slot machines, roulette table, and card table. Postmarked Iowa 1956. Sender says his trip to Vegas is “an experience I shall never forget.” 3) Golden Nugget. Lot of 16. Thirteen linens: six nighttime exteriors, three used, three unused; two daytime exteriors, both unused; and four interiors showing dining room, roulette, main room, and saloon, none used. Three chrome: one nighttime exterior, two interiors of saloon/restaurant. 4) Hotel Flamingo. Two chrome cards of the same interior photo of people gambling on the casino �loor. One has writing and notations from 1959. 5) Hotel Last Frontier. Duplicate unused linen cards of “21 Club” Casino. Shows empty gaming room with slots, card tables, and roulette table. 6) Lady Luck. Two RPPCs (with date of 10-8-76 written in pen on back of both). One shows an elderly man standing in front of a slot machine. Sender notes to his mother that he passes “this old boys place about every 2 months-just a refreshment stand out in the desert-lots of old curios laying around.” Dad Lee operated a trading post along Old Route 40 from the 1920s to the 1930s. The Northern, opened in 1931, was one of the �irst casinos in Nevada licensed for gaming. Run by Felix Turillas Sr. and John Etchebarren in the ground �loor of the Commercial Hotel on Center Street, the building was eventually purchased by Harrah’s in the 1950s. Poker games ran 24 hours a day. 2) Two RPPCs of Club Fortune interior depicting bingo. Card caption reads: “Tango Room Club Fortune Reno Nev.” Both unused. One has damage from tape on reverse. The eagle/ star W. Rogers mark was used by William Rogers between 1825 to 1841 on his coin silver spoons. From 1878 to 1893, after the death of William Sr., it was used by Simpson, Hall, Miller and Company after they signed an agreement with Wm. Rogers Jr. This mark was used again off and on from the late 1800s until at least 1939 by the International Silver Co. The Virginia & Truckee Railroad was chartered 11 February 1869, opened 1 January 1870, and then sold to the Virginia & Truckee Railway on 1 July 1905. An 8” diameter silver tray with an ornate “VT 1936” engraved in the center. Bears a faint “[eagle]Wm Rogers[star]/ 613” hallmark. Includes plate display stand. When built, it was the largest smelting facility in the world. An estimated 100 million tons of arsenic, cadmium, and zinc were released into the air, along with 30,000 tons of lead. During the 1970s, when the smelter was still operating, children living in nearby areas began displaying very high blood lead levels. In 1983, the Bunker hill smelter was added to the National Priorities List by the United States Environmental Protection Agency. According to the consignor, ingot was salvaged from Bunker Hill Mine, after it shut down. Niles Haskell. “Containing the City Record, the Names of All the Citizens, a Business Directory, and an Almanac.” The town of Newburyport became a city in 1851 (four years before this directory). Situated near the mouth of the Merrimack River, it was a �ishing, shipbuilding and shipping center, with an industry in silverware manufacture. The captains of old Newburyport (as elsewhere in Massachusetts) had participated vigorously in the triangular trade, importing West Indian molasses and exporting rum made from it. The distilleries were located around Market Square near the waterfront. Caldwell’s Old Newburyport rum was manufactured locally until well into the 19th-century.
